Introduction to Training for Success

Training for Success

Training for Success (TfS)is designed as a non- employed route for young people in the 16 and17 year old age group(up to 22 yrs for those who require additional support and 24 yrs for those in care) to undertake vocational work-based education and training and progress to higher level training, further education and/or employment.

Under Training for Success your GCSE results will determine the level at which you join. Training for Success Level 2 vocational work-based programmes are open to young people who have achieved a minimum of 4 GCSE’s grade D – G inclusive of English and Maths at least Grade F or equivalent (except for specific entrance criteria for plumbing) . Training for Success Level 1 vocational work-based programmes is to those young people who have not met the minimum GCSE entry criteria for Level 2. Earn while you learnAll Training for Success trainees automatically qualify for a non means tested Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) of £40 per week. If your parent(s)/guardian(s) receive Income Support, means tested Job Seeker’s Allowance or Housing Benefit, that benefit will not be affected by the EMA.

If you are entitled to one of these benefits in your own right, that benefit will not be affected either. Your parent(s)/guardian(s) will also be entitled to receive Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit provided all other conditions for receipt of the benefits are met.

In addition, travel, lodging and childcare allowances may be paid depending on individual circumstances.

You can join this Training forSuccess strand if:• You have achieved at least

one formal qualification your achievements do not amount to a full level 1 qualification. Note: A full level 1 qualification is defined as 5 GCSEs grades D-G, or an NVQ level 1, or an equivalent qualification; or

• you have a full level 1 qualification but does not meet the entry requirements in English and Mathematics (or equivalent) for Training for Success level 2 as detailed below.

If you have achieved a full Level 1 qualification but do not have the requirements in Englishor Mathematics to enter the level2 provision, then you work towards achieving your Essential Skills. Once you have achieved your Essential Skills, then you are then moved into the level 2 provision.

Course OverviewThe Level 2 Diploma in Joinery balances theory with hands-on experience. You will learn how to set up and use a circular saw, manufacture routine joinery products, and carry out different hand and power tool techniques. You will learn about health and safety, timber technology and timber ironmongery. You will also be taught how to handle equipment and materials safely and correctly.

Level 2 in Engineering

Course OverviewThe Level 2 Diploma in Engineering balances theory with some great hands-on experience. You will learn how to work safely and effectively, how to interpret engineering information such as 3D drawings and how to use maths to solve different engineering problems.

By the end of the course, you will have developed a sound understanding of different mechanical and electrical components, and will be able to identify the properties and characteristics of a range of materials. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to demonstrate your new skills such as fabrication and welding, electronics, AutoCAD techniques .

Applied electrical and mechanical science for engineering Gives learners an opportunity to investigate many electrical and mechanical units such as charge, current, voltage, resistance and power; mass, weight, force, density, velocity and acceleration.

Using computer aided drawing techniques in engineering The learner will be provided with an introduction to CAD and enable them to produce engineering drawings to given industrial standards.

Selecting and using secondary machining techniques to remove material This unit introduces the learner to secondary machining techniques, focussing on the traditional techniques of turning, milling, drilling and grinding.

Operation and maintenance of electrical systems and components The learners will be introduced to the function and operation of a variety of electronic systems, circuits and their associated components.

Fabrication techniques and sheet metal work This unit gives the learner with no previous experience of fabrication or sheet metal work an opportunity to work with the principles, materials and processes used in industry.

Electrical Construction This unit will introduce learners to the skills and related theory required when selecting electronic components and constructing simple circuits when working as an electronics technician.

The practical skills development units: • MMA Welding • MIG welding• Bench Fitting• Sheet metal

MMA Welding Also known as stick or arc welding, this is the more traditional type of welding where consumable welding rods are used. Although less used than MIG these days MMA is still very useful for heavy sections and particularly outdoors welding jobs. Trainees will be taught to weld butt, overlap, fillet, corner and Tee joints and to make parts comprising a variety of these methods.

MIG Welding Also known as continuous wire welding, is the most popular form of welding in industry nowadays. The filler wire is held on a reel inside the welding machine and fed out when a trigger is pressed. It is considered by some to be easier to learn and it is possible to produce quality welds quickly as there is no need to stop and replace rods. Trainees will be taught to weld butt, overlap, fillet, corner and Tee joints and to make parts comprising a variety of these methods.

Bench Fitting This unit allows the trainee to develop skills in the basic hand tools used in the engineering workshop – pillar drill, hacksaw, files etc. The trainees make a series of parts, which fit together, using these tools with each part being increasingly challenging. Parts made typically include a G-clamp and interlocking plates.

Sheet Metal In this unit trainees learn the basic skills needed to make parts and assemblies from sheet metal, mostly in mild steel and aluminium. The basics of folding and box-making are covered first which include joining methods such as riveting and spot welding, then trainees progress to making complete products such as toolboxes, letter boxes and eventually onto ventilation ducting/chimneys.



Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles

Course OverviewThe course allows the trainee to gain a broad range of knowledge and experience vehicle maintenance and repair and helps prepare for a career as a skilled vehicle technician.

If you are a new or existing employee who has moved into a new or changed job role and need to learn new skills then ApprenticeshipsNI could be the right choice for you.

The opportunity to work and earn, develop and learn and gain nationally recognised industry qualifications is what ApprenticeshipsNI are all about.

For those aged under 25 years the Department for Employment and Learning undertakes to pay the full costs of the ‘off-the-job’ training included in the ApprenticeshipsNI framework for the duration of the apprenticeship and contribute 50% of funding for those aged 25 years and over. The employer can also receive incentive payments at the completion of each apprenticeship. The overall funding is determined

by the complexity and level of the apprenticeship framework followed. Employer incentive payments can range from £250 to £1,500.

Once you sign up to ApprenticeshipsNI you will begin training for the qualifications necessary for your career and to meet your employers needs. Once you complete your apprenticeship you will have formal qualifications that are recognised by employers worldwide.

How long does the training take? ApprenticeshipsNI unlike traditional apprenticeships are not time served but offer training that is flexible and designed around the needs of the apprentice and the employer. NVQ Level 2 up to 130 weeks & NVQLevel 3 up to 130 weeks.

ApprenticeshipsNI is a Northern Ireland work – based programme funded by the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) and part financed by the European Union Social Fund. It is available to bothexisting and newly recruited PAID employees aged 16 plus. At NRC apprenticeships at Level 2 and/or Level 3 are offered in a diverse range of vocational areas.





Your eligibility for ApprenticeshipsNI training • are open to those who have

reached the minimum school leaving age, and who meet the entry requirements set out by the sector and DEL.

• are a series of planned on-and off -the-job training and development activities;

• lead to an externally accredited VCQ/VRQs;

• build upon the basic general competences such as the Essential Skills of Application of Number, Communications and ICT, the latter, where appropriate to the Apprenticeship Framework;

• are industry-driven and designed to be relevant to the needs of each occupational sector; and

• enable apprentices to acquire high level technical, administrative and first-line management skills. You can enter ApprenticeshipsNI programmes on progression from Training for Success, or as a direct entrant. To be eligible to enter ApprenticeshipsNI programmes Level 2/Level 3 Apprenticeship provision, an unemployed person must:

• have attained the minimum school leaving age of 16.

• be about to take up permanent paid employment with a Northern Ireland-based company and be contracted to work a minimum of 21 hours per week (including day release/off- the-job training) with one employer;

• have the potential to successfully complete all the requirements of the appropriate Level 2/Level 3 Apprenticeship Framework;

• meet any health requirements (eg. colour vision) specific to the occupation of their choice;

• have achieved any necessary entry academic qualifications (eg. GCSE) determined by the relevant sector for the apprenticeship and approved by the Department for Employment and Learning; and

• pass any entry tests specified by the relevant sector/employer and approved by the Department for Employment and Learning. In addition if you are an existing employer you must:

• be in permanent remunerative employment with a Northern Ireland-based company from day one of the apprenticeship;

• be contracted to work a minimum of 21 hours per week (including day release/off-the-job training) with one employer; and

• meet all the other eligibility criteria as set out above.

Previous Qualifications Level 2/ Level 3A person who has previously achieved a recognised vocational qualification at Level 2 / Level 3 or equivalent can only undertake a level 2 / level 3 apprenticeship which is both unrelated to their qualification and classified as a priority skill area under ApprenticeshipsNI, subject to satisfying eligibility criteria stated above. Graduates are eligible to enter ApprenticeshipsNI provision. However, NRC and the employer must be satisfied that an apprenticeship is an appropriate career path for the graduate to take. A graduate is defined as a person who has obtained a Degree, a Higher National Diploma, a Diploma in Higher Education, or an equivalent qualification awarded by a recognised university or other Institute of Higher or Further Education. Certain entrance criteria is required for vocation areas such as plumbing and electrical installation

• In addition you will be required to read and extract information from drawings and specifications, conform to general workplace safety guidelines, security and waste management controls.

At Level 3 you will learn how to construct complex masonry structures such as arches, chimneys, fireplaces decorative features and curved walling.

Tips on how to secure an apprenticeship or work placement

Gaining an apprenticeship is one of the best career moves that you can make. You will gain valuable skills and qualifications, and get paid while you are training. But you cannot start your apprenticeship unless you have secured a suitable full-time employer.

You may face similar challenges in gaining a work placement for your Training for Success vocational programme and to make things easier a few useful tips to assist you in your quest for an apprenticeship or work placement are as follows:

• Consider working with a suitable employer over the summer months to give you a better insight into the industry in which you are thinking of a career.

• Remember to check that you are adequately covered by the employer’s insurance, and that you have also received suitable Health & Safety training.

• Get on the phone, e-mail or arrange to meet with as many local companies/employers as you can and remember to have an updated curriculum vitae ready to hand over, post, or e-mail to employers.

• Contact your local Careers Service, school careers teacher to get useful information on your chosen career as well as help in preparing your CV.

Education SupportThe Northern Regional College aims to enable people with a medical condition, learning difficulties and/or disabilities to access, participate and progress within and from learning programmes, through the establishment of appropriate support mechanisms.
