Fearisreally,whatIdiscoveredisallnegativeemotionsisrootedinfear,whetherit'sanger,jealousy,insecurity,greed,guilt,shame,anyofthatstuff,thesourceemotionisfear.Thensimilarly,allpositiveemotionsarerootedintrust,theyhaveconfidence,grace,

gratitude,humility,confidence,andcourageandallthatstuffcomesoutoftrust.WhenIbrokeitdowntojustthosetwofundamentalkindofforcesactingonthesourceofourflow,itmadeitsomuchsimplerformetoworkwithitandseehowIcouldtransformthesefear-basedemotionsintotrustandopenuporflow.

RavéMehta: Youtrust,okay,hereisaspectrumtotrust,itstartswith,andthesamewithfear,fearstatswithdoubt,leadstoskepticism,andultimatelyitleadstofear,andthenfearparalyzesyou.Theoppositeistrust,itstartswithhopeanditmovesupthescaleuntilyouhavefulltrustinessentiallytheuniverse,you'replaceinit,alltheeventshappeningaroundyou.Youhaveasenseofcomfortthateverythingisworkinginyourfavorandyoumaynotknowalltheanswersorwhy,butyouhavethatsenseoftrustandthat's...Whenyou'reinthatstateofultimatetrust,that'swhenyou'retappedintoultimateflowandweseethat.Weseethatlikewhenwe'rereallypresent,you'reinastateoftrust.

RavéMehta: Whenyoumoveawayfrombeingpresent,youallowfeartocomein,allthewhat-ifquestions.Themorefurtheryou'reoutinthefuture,themoreroomforfeartoenter.BeingpresentisjustoneofthethreepillarsoffearthatIkindofcameupwithorthatIdiscoveredovertime.Fearisalwaysbasedinthefuture,whatifthishappens?Whatifthathappens?Manytimesit'sstimulatedbythepastandthenweexperienceitinthepresent.However,whenyou'reverypresentthere'snoroomforfear.That'swhenyou're

inastateoftrustbecauseyou'reinflow,you'recompletelyinthemoment.Youhavetobetrusting.

DaveAsprey: Whenyou'reinthemomentyoucan'tbeafraid?

RavéMehta: No,there'snoroomforfear.

DaveAsprey: Exactly.

RavéMehta: Right.

DaveAsprey: Itotallygetthat.

RavéMehta: Thesecondpillaroffearis,thefirstistime,thesecondisattachment.Therearetwotypesofattachment.FirstIwaskindoflike,"Oh,maybeweshouldn'thaveattachments."ThenovertimeIrealized,"No,there'snothingwrongwithattachment.It'sthenatureofhowweareattachedtotheseobjectsorsubjectsofourattachment,"andtherearetwotypes.

Oneisarigidattachment,somethingthatkindoflikeasteelbeamconnectingyoutotheobjectofyourattachment,andthere'salmosttheseuniversalforcesactingonyouthat'screatingstress.Ifthere'senoughstressandoppositedirectionsinthatbeamthat'sconnectingyouto,snapsandyoujustslingshotawayfromeachother.Thewholeexperienceismiserablebecausethere'sstressthewholetime.

TheothertypeofattachmentiswhatIcallgravitationalororbitalattachment.That'swhenthere'snothingholdingyouinplace,it'sjustyourowngravityandthegravityofwhateveritisthattheobjectofyourattachmentthat'skeepingyouguyswithineachother'sforceorfield.Whenalltheseuniversalforcespushonyou,youjustrotatearoundeachotherbutthere'snostressinthesystem.Asdynamicschangeyoucannaturallygravitateawayfromeachotherorclosertogether,butonceagain,it'snatural,there'snostressinthesystem.

ChangingfromarigidattachmenttoanorbitalattachmentwasanotherpillaroffearthatIfoundwouldbreakdownfear.Thedifferencebetweenthetwoiswhenyou'reinarigidattachmentsituation,youarefocusedontheattachmentandwhereitshouldbe.You'retryingtocontrolit.Whereinagravitationalattachment,you'reactuallyfocusedonyourselfinbecomingabetterpersonorgrowingineveryaspect,andthat'sattractingtherightthingsintoyourspaceandpushingthewrongthingsaway.It'sjustaslightshiftinmindset,insteadoffocusingonsomethingelse,focusingonyourself,andtheneverythingcorrectsitself.

Thenthethirdisaveryspecifictypeofattachment,it'sanattachmenttoaspecificoutcome,wecallthatanexpectation.Whenyouhaveanexpectation...Ithinkaboutexpectationas,ifyouachieveanexpectationthere'snorealgloryorjoybecauseyouexpectedit,butifyoudon't,thenthere'sallthesedismayanddisappointmentanddemoralizationthattakesplacethatbringsyourflowstatedown.

However,whatIfoundifwechangeourexpectationstopreferencesandleavingthefinaloutcomeofhowthatintentionisserved,thatwhenyouachieveitthenthere'sthisgreatjoyandelationthattakesplace,andwhenyoudon'tyoustillleaveitopenforotherwaysthatthat'sinitialintentionbeingsatisfied.

Goingback,there'snoproblemwithhavinggoals.It'sjustattachingacertain,veryspecificformandoutcometothatgoalmaynotnecessarilybethebestinterestofyourintentionofwhyyousetthegoalinthefirstplace.Changingtheexpectationtopreference,becauseexpectationsisverytiedtoform,preferencesistiedtotheintention.Justasubtleshiftinmindsetopensitup.Itturnsout,anyoneofthesethreepillars,time,attachmentandexpectation,ifyouknockanyoneofthosethreedownthenfearjustgoesaway.Becauseallofthemhavetobeactiveforfeartoexist.

DaveAsprey: Now,I'lltakearidiculousexamplehere.IreallywanttounderstandfearandIthinkalotofpeoplelisteningtothis,everyoneknowsthatfearplaysaroleintheirlife.Everyonewantstohavecontrolovertheirfear,andyou'rewritingabookabouthowtohackfear.I'mgoingtogodeeponthisandyoucantellmeifI’mbeingridiculous,I'mokaywiththat.

Nowhehadabullyinschoolandthisbullyisafemalebutshe'slikeheavierwoman,biggergirl,andshe'sbullyinghimandhisfriendsandwhatnot.Hehadsomuchconfidencetothatpointthatheactuallywenttothebullyandtoldher,"Heylook,thereasonyoudon'thaveanyfriendsisbecauseyou'resomeantoeverybodyandifyouweren'tsomeantoeverybodythenyouwouldhavemorefriends.Infact,Iwanttobeyourfriendbutyoudon'tletmebeyourfriendbecauseyou'resomean."

Thiswholefearjourney,expeditionI'vebeenchasingforthelast,overadecadenow,allI'vereallydoneisputmyselfintostatesthatwhereIfeltlikeI'llbeconfrontingfearforme.ObservemyemotionsasI'mconfrontingitandthenasI'mnotconfrontingit.LookattheDeltathedifferencebetweenthetwoandseewhatischangingandthenfindingthepatternbetweenthat.That'showIunraveledalotofthesethingsthatI'mwritingaboutnow.It'sreallypointingoutthedifferences.Ifsomeonecan't,exactly,they'renotequippedortrainedtoidentifythoseinternallythenit'sjustpointingit,pointingthemtolookthere.Thentheystartlearningreallyfastandonceagain,oncetheystartfiguringhowtonoticethedifferencesandemotionalthoughtstatestheycouldlearnanythingatthatpoint.
