Research Isometric TransducerThis Isometric Transducer approaches the ideal of measuring isometriccontraction force without motion. It is available with three different forceranges. Each Transducer has an X10 range selector switch providingtwo ranges.

This Transducer measures force by measuring the change in capacitanceof a stiff beam between two plates. Beam deflection is measured inmicrons.

Two models are now available. The only difference between the models isthe length and diameter of the mounting rod. Model 1 has a 12.7mm ODby 51mm long mounting rod. Model 2 has a 9.5 mm OD by 91.4mm longmounting rod.

Our Research Isometric Force Transducers supplyexcitation voltage to a self-contained transducer andconvert the pico-farad changes of capacitance intohigh level DC voltages using a patented electroniccircuit (U.S. Patent #4,142,144). This circuit isextremely sensitive and stable, producing up to 5VDC for direct connection to Standard SignalConditioners, Data Acquisition Systems, ModularUniversal Oscillographs, Student Oscillographs,Flatbed Strip Chart Servo Recorders, and X-Y Plotters.

All transducers have a small external transducerelement hard-wired to a small amplifier. This

amplifier is hard-wired to a wall type transformer. Thetransformer reduces line voltage to 12 VDC and isboth UL- and CSA-listed. For 230 VAC, 50 Hzoperation the transformer is VDE-listed. TheseTransducers are factory-calibrated to deliver 5 VDCfor full rated load and are still linear for 100%overload (4 VDC). They have offset (tare) controls.

The Transducer amplifier has a 3-digit backlit LCDdisplay that shows the output voltage. A standard BNCoutput connector is located at the rear of the amplifier. These amplifiers can be stacked for multiple use.

HA-HSE Isometric Force Transducer F30The HA-HSE F30 is a sensitive, reliable and rugged isometric force transducersuitable for use with very small muscle/tissue specimens. The ultra-low verticaldisplacement of the transducer means that true isometric measurements canbe made. The low seismic sensitivity of the HA-HSE F30 minimizes theinfluence of environmental vibrations on the force recordings which result invery stable baselines. The design of the unit (no internal wires suspending thetransducer head) means that this transducer will stand up to years of use. Thisis a full resistance bridge transducer which can be connected to the HA-HSETAM-A and TAM-D strain gauge amplifiers, see page I36. Connectors are alsoavailable for Harvard Apparatus Ltd., Grass and Gould strain gauge amplifiers.

TRI Series Force Transducers (isometric) measure the force of contractionof isolated tissues under conditions of constant force. IsometricTransducers are classically used in Organ Bath experiments with muscleswith short/rapid contractions such as tracheal muscle, atrium, papillarymuscle, aortic rings, veins or other vessel rings.

The Transducers are equipped with a special system allowing an easy andrapid fixation of the thread that tightens upper side of the tissue in anorgan bath. TRI Series Transducers are appropriate for various load rangesfrom simple applications to those requiring detection of very small forces.

Harvard Apparatus Ltd. IsometricTransducersIsometric muscle contraction is defined as force with zero motion. HarvardApparatus Isometric Transducers achieve this condition by means of thinfilmed, bonded strain gauges and substantial beams. The strain gauge has four-wireclosed Wheatstone bridges for long term stability and sensitivity. The stiffnessof the transducer and stem prevents unwanted displacement.

To operate, these Isometric Transducers require power from the amplifier/signalconditioner to which they are connected. They are available in five force rangesand are supplied with an amplifier/signal conditioner specific, 1.8 m (6 ft) Cable. These Cables are also available separately allowing the Transducer to connectedto a different amplifier/signal conditioner simply by switching the Cable.

    Transducer Model B40

B40 Advanced Research Isotonic LeverTransducerThis system is designed to transduce displacements during contractions andmovements into proportional electric currents. The amount of force requiredto operate the system is exceedingly small, providing ideal isotonicmeasurement conditions for physiological and pharmacological research. Thisarrangement of a lever transducer with any bridge system (DC measuringbridge or TAM plug-in module of our PLUGSYS, see page I36) is particularlywell suited to isotonic measurements in smooth muscle preparations inisolated organ and tissue baths. Values are transmitted as a result ofmovements of a permanent magnet within field plates.

The instrument is calibrated by locking the end of the lever into the calibrationstops on the frame. These stops represent full deflections of ±10 and ±20 mm.If the organ preparation is attached to hole no. 10, this is equivalent to a

movement of ±20 mm (= 40 mm total), reducing for each lower hole used. Theunit can be interfaced with almost any type of AC or DC bridge.

There are 3 calibration steps on the frame: ±22 mm, 0 and –22 mm at adistance of 100 mm from the pivot measured at the arch. The calibrationamplitude is reduced at the various holes as shown below.

Battery-Powered Teaching IsotonicTransducerThis Battery-Powered Teaching Isotonic Transducer has an output shaft locatedin precision bearings, which carries a lever 90 mm (3.5 in) long. This lever isnotched on its top surface and pierced with eight holes on either side of thelever point on a 5 mm pitch from the fulcrum. These piercings are forattachment of the preparation.

TRO Isotonic Research TransducerThe TRO Isotonic Transducer measures displacements with pre-adjustedloads (position transducer).

Isotonic transducers are classically used for measuring the contractionamplitude of isolated muscles in Organ Bath studies, i.e. the changesin tissue length observed under a constant load. These transducers arepreferably used with smooth muscle preparations characterized byrelatively slow contractions (ileum, vas deferens, lung strips, esophagus, urinary bladder, etc.).

    Isotonic Research Transducer

Harvard Apparatus Teaching IsotonicTransducersThis Harvard Apparatus Teaching Isotonic Transducer is exceptionallysensitive and stable, requiring a minimum of force to produce asubstantial electrical signal. It uses precision ball bearings and agraduated optical density vane that moves between an infrared sourceand a sensor.

The notched, pierced input lever is 90 mm (3-1/2 in) long for easyconnection to muscle tissue. A spring and anchor post are supplied forconverting the unit into a Transducer capable of recording frog/heartmuscle tension for auxotonic applications.

This Transducer has a 2 m (6.6 ft) shielded integral cable which terminatesin a specific connector for use with one of the amplifiers/signalconditioners below.

Force Calibration WeightsThese NEWTON style calibration weights are precision weights use tocalibrate force transducers. The weights are made from polished brassand have an integral hook. They are supplied in a wooden storage case. They are calibrated in Newtons at the standard acceleration of gravitygn = 9.80665 m/s2. Nine weights are supplied. Class of accuracy M1.

Gram Calibration WeightsThese gram calibration weights are precision weights use to calibratepreload on force transducers. The weights are made from polished brass. They are supplied in a wooden storage case with a pair of handlingforceps and a cleaning brush. Nine weights are supplied. The 0.1, 0.2 and0.5 gram size weights are flat metal pieces. The larger size weights havean integral hook. Class of accuracy M1 after OIML*.
