“ Bmc insurance… for me it’s the only choice.”SirChrisBonington

the British mountaineering council (Bmc) is delighted to offer you an exceptional range of travel and activity insurance for cover around the globe. whether you are a hill walker, adventure traveller, climber or mountaineer you can benefit from a specialist policy developed by one of our active experts.

The BMC is regulated and authorised by the Financial Services Authority (FSA), so providing you with greater reassurance of our service, finance and competence standards. You can find out more about our service standards on page 10.

Be aware that many low cost policies can threaten the security of the market with cheap premiums equalling low service levels, strict policy wording, high excesses and low understanding of medical and rescue cover in the outdoors.

By purchasing BMC travel insurance you will benefit twice. In addition to receiving excellent insurance cover any surpluses are reinvested to support the BMC’s vital access and conservation work and other important work programs including safety, training and technical investigation of equipment failure.

have a good trip!

can YOu taKe Out Bmc traVel insurance? In order to be eligible for BMC travel insurance you must:

• Have a permanent home address in the UK, and not be living or working abroad.

• Have not yet departed from the UK (unless you are renewing a BMC policy).

• Not be travelling to a country against the advice of the Foreign Office.

• Be a current BMC/MCofS/MI member (or member of an affiliated club) or planning to become a member as part of your travel insurance application.

• Have read and can confirm the statements in the MedicalDeclaration:

Bmc travel insurance policies contain health restrictions. it’s very important that you check if you can take out Bmc travel insurance, and what pre-existing medical conditions are covered under our policies.

In order to take out BMC Travel Insurance, you must be able to confirm the following statements:

a All persons to be insured live in the UK, are registered with a GP, and are fit to participate in the sports and activities they wish to cover.

B No person to be insured has been diagnosed with a terminal condition.

c I understand that if anyone travelling has a mental or nervous disorder (including anxiety, stress or depression) then I can buy a policy, but there is no cover for any claims linked to this condition.

If you can’t confirm statementsa, B, and c then you cannot buy BMC Travel Insurance.

medical cOnditiOnsFor full cover you must be able to confirm the following statements for you, and anyone else to be insured:

1 No person has ever had a heart condition or heart-related condition, high blood pressure or a stroke.

2 No person has had treatment for any form of cancer in the last five years.

3 No person has been prescribed any medication in the last 12 months for any long term or ongoing medical condition other than the allowed conditions (see below).

4 No person has any long term or ongoing medical conditions which require regular review, other than the allowed conditions (see below).

5 No person is waiting for medical investigation, referral, treatment or results.

If you cannot confirm these statements you will still be able to buy BMC Travel Insurance but your policy will only cover you for the allowed conditions (see below).

For any medical conditions that are not mentioned in the allowed conditions, there will be no cover for any costs incurred due to that condition. This means any costs, or increase in costs, that have to be paid because of the condition (whether these costs are directly related to the condition or not). For example, if you had an existing lung problem and got a chest infection on holiday, you might be more ill, and take longer to get better, than someone without an existing lung problem. If this happened, the most BMC Travel Insurance would pay would be for the reasonable costs of treatment that someone without a lung condition might have to pay.

please note: You need to be able to confirm the above statements before you book any holiday. if you can’t, or if there is a change in the “declared medical conditions” detailed below, you must contact us immediately.

please read this carefullY and rememBer the fOllOwing:

1 declaratiOn This insurance policy contains a declaration which is set out

overleaf. You must tell us about anything we have asked in the declaration which may affect this insurance policy.

2 limit Of cOVer each section of the personal insurance cover shows the most

you can claim, but other limits may apply. For example, under Baggage, the overall limit is £2,000 but there is a limit of £350 for any single item and a total limit of £350 for all valuables. We will work out how much we will pay you for baggage claims based on the value of the items at the time of the loss, not the cost of replacing them.

3 lOOKing after YOur BelOngings Many claims for loss or theft are caused by people being

careless with their belongings. If you do not take good care of your belongings, it can be upsetting and inconvenient for you and we may not pay your claim.

4 premium refund You can cancel this policy within 14 days from the date you

receive the policy wording and policy schedule by contacting the BMC. We will then refund your premium in full. No refund of premium is available after the 14 day period.

5 eXcesses We will take an excess off each claim you make under certain

sections of this insurance. The amount you will have to pay towards a claim is shown under each section. If we agree to a medical expenses claim which has been reduced by your using an european Health Insurance Card (eHIC) form or private health insurance, the section excess will not apply.

6 maKing a claim To help us deal with your claim quickly and efficiently, please

read the claims procedure. This explains what documents you will need to support a claim and when you will need this kind of proof. You must collect some of the proof you need, for example a police report, while you are on your trip. For all claims, claims queries and requests for claim forms please contact BMC travel Insurance Claims on +44 (0) 1293 726 434. The phone lines are open 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday.

7 preparing fOr YOur trip Before engaging in sports or leisure activities, you should

ensure that all reasonable local safety advice has been obtained and is followed. This includes obtaining details of all the local emergency rescue services such as mountain rescue and taking such details with you.

8 getting help Emergency Assistance

It is your responsibility to prepare and initiate communication with local emergency services, such as mountain rescue. As soon as this help has been arranged and if appropriate, you may then wish to notify ACe Assistance, so they can be ready to get involved once you have been taken to the nearest appropriate medical facility.

ACE Assistance 24/7 If you simply need medical treatment abroad or mountain rescue

have brought you down to a local hospital, getting the right medical care can present difficulties. BMC Travel policies have access to the 24/7 365 ACe Assistance service. Your case will be managed by a major assistance company who will have multi-lingual staff and medical expertise to coordinate your care and if necessary your repatriation.

More details on the assistance service are given on your rescue Card and ultimately in the “Medical Assistance and referral Services” section of the policy wording.

The contract will be subject to english law unless otherwise agreed. Please ensure you read your insurance policy carefully. Failure to comply with the terms and conditions of the policy may result in cover being restricted. Specimen policies setting out in full all terms, conditions and exclusions may be obtained from the BMC.
