Yichang lies in the middle of China. Both the first dam of the Changjiang River --Ge Zhou Ba Project and the heaviest power station –The Three Gorges hydropower station are in Yichang. Yichang is a tourism and leisure city of the richest vigor of middle area of the Changjiang River. The traffic is very convenient in Yichang. The city develops along the Changjiang River with freeways linking with Beijing, Shanghai and other cities.

Yi-Huang (Yichang to Huangshi) Freeway extends to the Three Gorges Dam, National Highway 318 traverses the whole area. Jiao-liu (Jiaozuo to Liuzhou) Railway meets at Yidu of Yichang. Riverine railway and Shanghai-Rong (Shanghai to Chengdu) expressway cross the city center from east to west .
