Clarkson College ATA: Italy Day 1: Sunday, May 2 Depart Our adventure begins as we depart on a transatlantic flight to Roma, the capital of Italy. IF1 Day 2: Monday, May 3 Rome2 Upon arrival, we meet our local guide and take a bus tour to Rome’s historic city center. After lunch on our own near Trevi Fountain, we enjoy a walking tour of the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. We end our day with a visit inside the Colosseum, once the center of ancient Rome. Day 3: Tuesday, May 4 Rome This morning we visit the Vatican City State and St. Peter’s Basilica, home of the Roman Catholic Church and the largest building in Christianity. Our walking tour also includes a visit to the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. This afternoon we drive to the ancient harbor city of Rome, Ostia Antica. We spend time exploring the beautifully preserved ruins nestled in the meadows between the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea. B3 Day 4: Wednesday, May 5 Rome The entire day is free to learn and explore on our own. B Day 5: Thursday, May 6 Siena After breakfast we head north into the Tuscan hills and the medieval city of Siena. On the way, we stop a family fattoria (farm) to sample local wines and share lunch together. We meet our local guide upon arrival in Siena and together explore sunken Piazza del Campo and the Duomo, perhaps the finest Gothic cathedral in Italy. B, L4 Day 6: Friday, May 7 Siena Today Clarkson College students visit a local hospital to learn about its different units as well as the Italian health care system. B Day 7: Saturday, May 8 Siena The entire day is free to learn and explore on our own. B Day 8: Sunday, May 9 Florence After breakfast we bid arrivederci to Siena and continue our journey to Firenze, cradle of the Italian Renaissance and the “heart of Italy.” On the way, we stop to visit the Florence American Cemetery and reflect upon the graves of thousands of GI’s who died fighting their way “up the boot” of Italy in 1944. After lunch on our own, we meet our local guide for a walking tour of the

city, beginning at Santa Croce Church, a Franciscan minor basilica where Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and Galileo are buried. After our visit inside, we continue walking to Piazza Della Signoria, Florence’s famous Duomo and Baptistry, and Piazza di San Lorenzo before checking into our home for the next four nights. B Day 9: Monday, May 10 Florence After breakfast we drive through the Tuscan hills to view the 12th-century Leaning Tower of Pisa and then to nearby Lucca, an ancient Etruscan town surrounded by massive red brick walls. We share lunch together at a local restaurant before our local guide walks us through this historic city. We learn about the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, an oval Roman amphitheater; the cathedral (duomo) dedicated to San Martino; and the Romanesque-Gothic Guinigi Tower. With 130 stairs to the top, the torre offers not only fantastic views but also a closer look at the oak tree growing out of its top. We then enjoy some free time in Lucca before returning to Florence. B, L Day 10: Tuesday, May 11 Florence Our entire morning is devoted to Florence’s two main attractions: Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze, which holds Michelangelo’s David; and the magnificent Uffizi Gallery, which boasts the greatest collection of Italian paintings anywhere. Local guides accompany us for our visit to the Accademia, after which we enter the Uffizi Gallery. There, we learn at our own pace with audio-guides. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. B Day 11: Wednesday, May 12 Florence The entire day is free to learn and explore on our own. B Day 12: Thursday, May 13 Return Our unforgettable learning adventure concludes today as we depart for our flight back home. B
