Believe it or not there are some important news stories out there. Even issues of faith besides terrorists and religious extremists. But you wouldn’t know it by watching the cable news channels. Of course there are tragedies all over the country that do warrant attention but many look at the news and see no hope. As Christians we need to remind ourselves and each other that there is still hope and joy! Even though we have an oil pipeline being built in our backyard that will eventually be completed, I think those who protest it have brought me to an understanding of larger picture. We forget that we are really stewards of the land, Gods creation. For some the issue is cultural, the pipeline endan- gers Native American burial grounds in the Dakotas. I’m not sure I would want to disturb a ceme- tery where my family is buried. For others it ’s the issue of “imminent domain” where our demo- cratic government may demand land for such use. While the peaceful protests may not fix or even stop the construction or end violence certainly it does bring all those issues to light. Certainly it seems as though we are very polarized as a country. UMW NEWS Congratulations to new and continuing Board Members for 2017. We look forward to a great year. Just three more months are left in 2016, but busy months for home, family, UMW and church. UMW Executive Board meets on Monday, October 3rd (11:00 a.m. in Conference Room). If you have a matter or concern you want UMW to consider, please let anyone on the board know (list of UMW officers is on the UMW bulletin board in the narthex). We will discuss possible ideas for increasing the budget support for UMW for this year, yet, and next year and possible increased ministry ideas/needs, programs for 2017. If you have idea s please, come and share them with us. Suggestions are always welcome.
Rummage Sale (Fellowship Hall) room set up starts on Tues., Oct. 4 and 5. Rummage Sale merchandise set up is Wed. and Thurs., the 5th and 6th. If you want to donate more items and treats for the bakery table now is the time. Remember, there will be an area set apart for Christmas items and decorations as well. The more we share of our-selves and from our homes, the more we may receive for UMW mission and for the support of Trinity’s ministry/programs. The budget for both are in need of your help. The items you share make for more room at home, are gifts for others and are transformed into funds that will also help others. The Rummage Sale itself is Thurs., Oct. 6th, 3:00-6:00 pm, Friday the 7th, 9:00 am-5:00 pm, and Saturday the 8th, 8:00 am to 10:00am. Please say, “Yes” to help when Martha Kirchner calls or you may call her.
October 8th is also the Annual UMW Conference Meeting for Iowa meeting in Decorah. If you are interested in attending and want to meet and hear our new bishop for the Iowa Conference speak, let Carol know by Oct. 3rd. (It will be a long drive with an early departure for a same day round trip). The meeting should end by 3 or 4 pm..
Our October local unit meeting at Trinity is on Wed., the 19th at 9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. Helen Ackerson will present the program on the new Reading Program books for 2017. We will also discuss the kits for the Ingathering and ask for volunteers to help take them Sat., Nov. 5th to Mt. Pleasant, IA Wesleyan campus as well as decide de-parture time and activities found at the Ingathering. While we decided to make health kits, along with the general church membership this year, school kits (like all of the various kits) continue to be needed throughout the world. UMW still has a lot of upholstery material with which to make the school bags (in the Conference Room, near the files) for those who want to make them as contributions to the Ingathering. You can find sheets giving listings of contents for these kits and others pegged to the UMW Board in the church narthex. The completed kits (or items for the kits put into sealed baggies) will need to be put into the “Ingathering boxes” in the Conference Room by Sun., Oct. the 30th at the latest to allow time for the necessary book work, etc. to be done prior to transporting them on Nov. 5th. Thank you for whatever help you will give towards making this year’s Ingathering such a success.

KEOKUK CHIEFS FOOTBALL TEAM Trinity UMC will be hosting the Keokuk Chiefs Football Team dinner on Thursday, Oct. 13th at 5 pm.. UMW READERS
Keokuk Trinity again had the most UMW “readers” in 2015-2016. The following reported on reading 5-20 books, from the lists of the last five years: Carol Nelson, Bev Merritt, Ila McRobert, Nancy Martin, Nadine Lindner, Martha Kirchner, Aletta Hardin, Janet Dinkel and Helen Ackerson. Five new books from the 2017 reading list are on the library cart. REMEMBER DIPPY - easy read fun book about an autistic boy and his cousin who is supposed to be watching over him and learns so much! BOUNDLESS - what other global expressions of faith teach us about following Jesus! FAITH ED. - Teaching about other religions in school in an age of intolerance. JOURNEY WITH J.W. - ac-tivities for elementary school children to learn about John Wesley and early Methodist history and THE AGE OF DIGNITY - Preparing for the Elder Boom in changing America. The next UMW program will be on the reading program and variety of books available to help us grow in our “concept of mission”. Books count that have been on the lists in the past six years! FROM THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT: Sunday, September 11th was the beginning of the 2016-17 Sunday School year - we soared into flight with en-thusiasm and excitement! The children had fun releasing many colored balloons to heaven!!! This year we want to have a Children’s Christmas Program. Christmas is only three months away!! The program will be the Sunday before Christmas at the 10:15 a.m. worship service. More information will be coming but if you are a parent of a child, please mark your calendar! We want as many children to be involved as possible. Christmas is a time of celebrating the birth of our dear savior. Keep the good or gently used books coming in. We have received over 1000 however we made a pledge to hand out 1500!! Janice Lindner, Education Chairperson From Your Outreach Committee… Thank you to all who continue to help with the meals being prepared on the 4th Thursday of each month at God’s Way. We will also be serving the Loaves and Fishes meal at First Lutheran Church on Thursday, September 29. We are expecting to serve 50 people and will have several carry outs. As the demand for these meals increase so does the need to provide more food and workers at each of these events. If you haven’t participated in this ministry of our church in the past, this would be a good time to think about what you could do to help. We will need three 9x13 pans of scalloped potatoes w/ham, three green bean casseroles, four dozen dinner rolls and six people to help serve for the October 27th meal at God’s Way. Please let Sally Tedrow or a member of the Outreach Committee know if you could help. We will be helping at God’s Way to fill Thanksgiving food boxes and also preparing the dressing for the community Thanksgiving meal. Stay tuned for more information on this in the November Trends. A Letter from Debbie Thank You! I can never begin to thank each of you enough for leading me back to the road of my Faith Journey. I can only promise you that I will “pay it forward” to others. Trinity holds a great bond within its Congregation. All churches deal with issues in their Congregation, and there will always be food times and difficult times. You may not understand all actions and decisions within the Church, but with God’s love, Trinity will no doubt continue to be a giving Church filled with great love. is here, and I count it a privilege to be presiding and leading each one of them. For me, preparation for this season included working on the Gospel of Luke for a Bible Study that would offer a foundation for a disciple-ship pathway. I have been thinking about Luke’s version of the great commission located in Luke 24:46-49. “He said to them, ‘This is what is written: the Christ will suf-fer and rise from the dead on the third day, and a change of heart and life for the forgiveness of sins must be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jeru-salem. You are witnesses of these things. Look,
all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are wit-nesses of these things. Look, I’m sending to you what my Father promised, but you are to stay in the city un-til you have been furnished with heavenly pow-er.’” (Common English Bible) Every disciple is a witness equipped with this heavenly power. I am convinced that the church is a community of faithful witnesses whose very lives are evidence of God’s forgiving love, evidence of Christ’s transform-ing love, and evidence of The Holy Spirit’s empower-ing fruit-bearing life of faith. Witnesses are guided, empowered, and equipped by God’s Spirit to testify, tell, and/or point to the message of salvation. Witnesses preach the good news of God’s saving grace in Christ Jesus and today is the Lord’s Day. We are forgiven. The Lord reigns, and God’s Spirit has started the work of changing us. The church as a community of witnesses is still God’s strategy for the invitation of individuals to come to the crucified and risen Christ, to live faith in the company of others, to embrace the ways of Jesus, and to enjoy the benefits and blessings of being made perfect into the likeness of Christ. The church as a community of witnesses is still God’s strategy for the pouring of blessings into all creation. The Anointed One who was sent out sends out witnesses to the world. And Jesus showed us how to be present attentively and compas-sionately in the lives of the poor, the broken hearted, the sick, the blind, the prisoners, and the oppressed. I am offering myself to anyone who would like to com-mit to learn and account with each other how to meet people at the point of need as a discipleship pathway, bearing witness to the good news of Jesus and the pro-claimed reign of the Lord.
