From a routine Tuesday morning working at the radio station, doing the news, sports and listening to the calls from a lot of disgruntled folks discussing a recently proposed local property tax increase, all was lost in the news that came across our TV at just a few minutes before 9 AM CT in Ashland, AL. The horror of a terrible accident soon gave way to the unbelievable feeling of concern as it became increasingly evident that on a number of fronts our nation had been attacked. It would unfold during the day that it was extremists from a strange religion we knew very little about that had carried out the attacks. I, along with millions across our country and around the world tried to wrap our minds around why something like this would be done? How could it happen? As I struggled to wander through the day and wonder what changes this day would bring to our country and my family, I decided that I would attend a gospel meeting in Ohatchee, AL that night just as I had planned. I was determined through the day that one of the things these cowardly murderers was not going to steal from me and my family was our ability to live a normal and blessed life. As Jamie and I rode to the church building that night it was unusually quiet as we listened to the radio and were encouraged by the stories of folks found alive and saddened by the staggering numbers of the dead estimated to be lost in this horrific day. As we arrived at the church building there were the usual greetings and, of course, the conversation turned quickly to the events of the day. As the service time neared, the preacher and elders asked a number of local preachers to lead prayers. The gospel meeting was going to be a prayer service that night which I thought was extremely appropriate. As a group of preachers and elders met in a classroom, Wayne began making assignments on different topics to pray for during the service. The topics included the usual things, our country, the families of the victims, the rescue workers , and then he looked at me and said, “Don, please lead a prayer for the families of the men who did this and our enemies.” I was taken back by this request. Obviously I have read Jesus’ admonitions to pray for our enemies but never before had it been so real. Here just 10 hours after this cowardly event, I was asked to pray for our enemies. After each person would pray, Wayne would tell what the next prayer would be concerning. He introduced me and as I began to try and pray emotions overwhelmed me. After a few seconds, that seemed forever, I regained most of my composure and offered a prayer, interrupted often by tears, for our enemies. It truly was the toughest public prayer I have ever led but in the years since, it has helped me to grow. As I reflect back on it, I realized that there is much more to our relationship with God, and others, besides what is going on at the time. God truly does see the big picture and the hope of redemption for the whole world including the families of those who killed so many on that horrible day. It truly was a unique learning experience for me. I Love and Appreciate You! A Chance to Help Last week a young preacher in his late 20’s with a wife and two children was struck by a bus on his motorcycle while returning home from preaching. He has worked with us in our Philip-pines work without pay. He has serious head injuries and his expenses are currently over $4000 after insurance. If you would like to help with this you can give it to Don Walker and he will send it October 1.

Trenton Ladies’ Day Our Ladies’ Day with Cindy Colley will be September 24, 2016. It will be a great day of growing in God’s Word and in our relationships with each other. Mark your calendar for all ladies from high school age and up! There is a sign up sheet to help bring food for this great event. It is on the bulletin board in the lobby.

Why Aren’t You More Involved? If you look at the calendar for each month for the activities for the congregation here, there is something for just about every age group, every month that is an activity besides our worship and Bible studies. Certainly being part of our weekly worship and Bible studies are an important indicator of your love and faithfulness to God. He also intends for us to be a family and that involves more than just being in the group worship and Bible studies. There are great people in this family of believers and if you are not taking advantage of the opportuni-ties to fellowship with them outside of worship , you are missing out on a wonderful part of this life for you and chance to encourage others!
