Right class of EFA members, just a couple of notices:1. Karen needs an ‘understudy’ forthe Thumpers Secretary of theMeeting. During 2014 & 2015Karen will not be able to carry outthe Thumpers Secretary of theMeeting duties due to work/studycommitments during this time sowe need somebody to take over fora couple of years. Please, PLEASEcontact Ted and make your inter-ests known - ‘first come first served’or will it be as is usual ‘who canhold their breath the longest beforesomebody else puts their name for-ward.’

    2. You may be aware the club havebeen invited to join the Pre-65 Mo-torcross Club to have a stand withthem at the Copdock MotorcycleShow on October 6th. But it clasheswith our Wrabness Trial. So if youare adverse to a bit of mud andwould like free entry to the showand help with the EFA display con-tact Don Daly or Ted so that ticketscan be aquired for you. Even a newclub gazebo has(?) been procured.

    3. The Wrabness Trial. Kevin needssome help. As far as I’m aware hehas not been able to get a Secre-tary of the Meeting yet - If you holdyour breath on this one it’s going toget cancelled as neither Kevin norMick will be around to bale youout! This also means Chris Byford-Smith and team (does Chris have ateam?) are going to need some helpin setting the trial out. You knowwhat to do - contact details forKevin are inside the front page ofthe T&T.

That’s all this month. You can goout and play once you’ve finishedyour work.

PEDRO’S PATTERAugust 10th Raydon charitytrial 3rd leg, report nextmonth as l have mislaid results!(Slacking Pedro, results available24/7 on the website - too busyswaning around abroad? Thereagain looking at my performancemaybe you did the right thing Ed.) Cousins Stephen Webb &Gary Eaves invaded France toride the international Aberceytwo day trial 24-25 August. TheEFA support group comprisingtheir respective ladies, Traceyand Jim Woodmason and yourstruly. 200 entry from Germany,Belgium, Sweden, England,Wales, Jersey and host nation.Several local and national pastpresent champions riding a greatselection of pre-65, pre-70 plustwin shocks. The lads on their TY175 & Fantic 240 respectively setoff in damp conditions to do the12 mile 18 section lap when wemet up with them 2hrs laterGary clean Stephen 8 still smil-ing, long natural sections inwoodland which housed old lime-stone pits which the organisershad made good use of. Supportgroup then moved to the 'pipeline'a rocky path up a considerableincline which one didn't shut offon!! The experts who set off firstmade it as experts should thenthe 'blue routers' some exertingconsiderable effort, particularlythe Belgiums encouraged by

their very vocal supporters ,greatatmosphere ,everyone very friend-ly, we witnessed some very wor-thy rides the boys both did it instyle and pressed on to completethe day after overcoming a cou-ple of hiccups but within timelimit. Results showed Gary 2ndin class Stephen midfield . Thatevening we all sat down In largemarquee for a prolonged mealwith musi c from a great group Ithough they were 'rolling stones'ho, ho! Good though and thevino flowed and some beer! The'guvnor' Joel Corroyorganiser, rider, PR man and allround sociable man visited allthe tables speaking to all, thisman has the biggest motorcycleoutlet in possibly all of Francemodern ( all major agencies) tri-als, enduros.., m/x. plus, plusabsolute jaw dropping collectionof competition machinery span-ning 70 yrs fantastic, all housedin clean well presented areas to-gether with necessary workshop .A 65 yr old workaholic who beenthere for 38 yrs a privilege tohave met him!! Sunday we wentstraight back to 'pipeline' whichnow had another similar sectionalongside Jim and self estab-lished ourselves twixt the two inour comfy Webb supplied deckchairs and proceeded to enjoythe action, after overnight rain itwas more difficult. faced with lap and half, 27 sec-tions. They arrived in good spir-its and got stuck in, Gary founda hole that wasn't there yester-day and eventually 'baled out' abike length from ends card mut-tering I should have dabbed, right in front of his supporters.Stephen had a spirited attemptgetting 2/3 up before Yam andhe ran out of puff. On the 'new'section Gary got it right, Stephen3 and away they went to experi-ence silencer displacement, si-lencer catching fire 'big' smokescreen!, running out of fuel, (ohdear) they finished in time verytired but elated at approx. 4-30.Stephen had never previous expe-rienced 'scrambling' (as he calledit) twixt sections, he had the restof week to recover holidaying inthe area. With the punch cardsystem operating results wereavailable for 6-30 award ceremo-ny conducted by who else butJoel alongside was lady repre-sentative of the cancer fund towhich entry monies were direct-ed, Joel obviously excelled him-self producing much acclaimfrom those understandingFrench, we all joined in the partygoodwill and drunk some more!!A 1-2-3 podium had to be mount-ed and Gary took his third inclass to some acclaim ,the awardbeing a laser cut mild steel bendwhich he would appreciate ad-vice on its best use,but it'll notbe forgotten after a lot of plan-ning & scheming, the winner be-

ing a former French aceStephen finished 108th overallso we bought him a beer! A ex -EFA member Hamish Eady nowlong time resident in France wasin the winning French team Fan-tic mounted still very capabledespite only ridden twice thisyear. We all enjoyed the weekendI would thoroughly recommendWoodmason tours who got methere by car-train-taxi -train -car,another experience! The Ibis ho-tel in Vesoul was good, overall alack of ice-cream. Among thedifferent machinery were a '47 &'49 French Terrot's (350cc) a200cc 1960's Zundapp, a luvelyspecial Briggs & Stratton indus-trial engined I guess 300cc Arielreplica frame ,AMC gearbox,BSA tank, Ceriani forks, light-weight wheels, this was well rid-den by a former German sidecarMX rider. A non 500T Nortonwas the result of 3yrs labours bya German whose wife is a stylistand contributed to frame designand the 'other bits' well executed, pleasant people as were mostothers at the party .

Well back to reality, pleasesupport the ACTC trial & Tim'stours, and our stand at Copdockand smile! Oh! Ask Tracey aboutToyota Yaris hybrid cars, wellmaybe not!!

THE EFA STAND AT THE LANGFORD,MUSEUM OF POWER BIKE SHOW

  • 12

So there you are,out walkingthe dog or sinking a swift halfin the pub garden on a Sundayafternoon when you hear it, un-mistakable, not a harsh soundmore of a purr really, you look upto locate it, you notice everyoneelse looking up too (even the dog!)then you see it, she comes intoview that distinctive shape, trulybeautiful, sleek and elegant (un-like the old battleaxe behind thebar) louder and louder, perfectpitch on the V Twelve Merlin, twocannons and the Red White andBlue roundells, then after a fewseconds she`s gone, back home, probably been to an air show orsomething, thrilling the next gen-eration who will grow up on talesof The Battle of Britain and theheroic pilots, briefly your caughtup in the moment, the sound, shape and speed of such an iconicaircraft transports you back to atime when Great Britain lived itsfinest hour! you feel it causingthrough your veins a pride a pas-sion an unshakeable belief,Churchills speech still evokes 70odd years later!. Cause it was the poor old Hur-ricane that done all the donkeywork, more than a match for anyStuka, took on all the Bombersand a few 109s to boot! still a love-ly plane but not in the sameleague as the Spit, more AustinA40 than Jaguar Etype. But thissmall small historic fact has beenquietly filed away so that the Spit

can take full adulation, does itmatter? no not really, its synony-mous now, it is The "Spitfire" theperfect name.I think to evoke such a passion forwhat are after all inanimate ob-jects there are key factors-firstlyit has to make a noise and notjust any noise, the right noise!.Now when I left school in the early1980s every young lads dream-sorry every young lads otherdream was to own a YamahaFS1E, not to get to work on or in-deed do a bit of shopping for mum,oh no, firstly the handlebarswould be dropped then the ex-haust limiter would be dispensedwith, then a paint job and lastlyMartins older brother Terry (whoworked in a garage) would comeround and for 20 quid or so tunethe eyeballs out of it and guaran-tee 85 miles an hour! Then youwere ready, ready to join The

"Fizzy Gang", these would meet upin a high street near you everySaturday and like a plague of lo-custs would circuit said highstreet in search of admiring glanc-es, what they actually got was anaudience of "old gal`s" trapzingalong with there pull baskets, there other halfs mopping along-side and PC Plod waiting for themat the other end! All by this timewith their fingers in their ears andmouthing obscenities!. Not for me though, never inter-ested, not even for a second, yousee by this time I had already

    ACHTUNG….…SPITFIRE

been initiated! I had stared intothe vortex and seen space andtime! in other words been presentat the birth of another MK V111Velo after one of its rebuilds, sincethe age of about seven the ritualbegan, the old man up-front and18 stone of uncle Richie and 5stone of me at the rear, thenheaved back on compression andon command "push like bloodyhell" (this was mans work!) thewhole of our street was about toexperience what it was like duringthe blitz and what an experience itwas, hard to describe a noise inwriting, to say that whilst pushingthe first Per Doomph then a sec-ond, a third and Dad shouting

"keep pushing" then ohthen......"Life", still pushing meand uncle Richie (beetroot facedby now) and muttering "thankxxxx for that" would collapse in aheap in the road, just as Dadwould ballerina style swiftly anddeftly swing his leg over and openher up! Then, once the rest ofSouth Drive had picked them-selves up of the floor and madethere way into their front gardensto see what was going on, wewould all be treated to the orches-tral throng of the big 500 cammyvelo. The sound would reverberatebetween the houses, me and uncleRichie whilst recuperating by theside of the road would then get tobreath in natures own alixa, agreat lung full of "R" nothingsmells like the "R" not even thescent of a beautiful women or aroast beef dinner! Uncle Richiewould then hold the throttle

whilst Dad tinkered away beneath, then back on the throttle one lastblast and silence. "Sound alrightto you Rich?" "yer Don, soundslovely", one or two of the neigh-bours would come over to have alook, one or two of the neighbourswould cancel there ear syringeappointment booked for the com-ing week!. So you can understand mycomplete lack of interest in anyJapanese whizz bang fart contrap-tion. In later life I see the beautyin a painting or sculpture but canthelp thinking that if that "mecca-no" like thing they built next tothe Olympics or the Mona Lisahad a "press here" button on theside mine and many othersinterests would have rocketed! Shape and design are inexora-bly linked, in my own line of worka gate or grille has to serve pur-pose but that doesn't mean it can-not be beautiful the use of a curverather than a straight line cantransform, with bikes and carsthere have been some hideousdesigns that have somehow madeit to production. I mean to draw aVolkswagen Beetle is one thing butto actually make it! (incidentallyone of the best sellers of all time.} As is often said if somethinglooks right then it probably isright, take the Mini for example, simplicity in design, a box on fourwheels but add a curve here andthere and you`ve a car that signi-fies the whole of the 1960s, funfashion and frivolity! On the bikeside of things I can only cast abiased eye at a big single, framed

  • 14

in Reynolds tube A La G50 orManx they just are the best look-ing motorcycles, purposeful bydesign. Whether it be Spitfire, Hurri-cane, Manx or Mini they all haveto serve purpose and of course do,untouchable in there day, its afine line between design and func-tion but get it right and you`ve awinner! There's probably somescientific formula for working outsuch a thing (golden triangle orlaw of nature) but nine times outof ten its just stumbled across, atweek here and there and you`vegot an iconic product. On the mud plugging side tosee a 500 union jacked Enfield upto its axles in mud, ploughingthrough a section is an iconicsite! Rather than watch a Scorpa

or Yamaha hop and skip bird likearound a section I prefer to seeFull Steam Ahead, Valve BouncingThumper Action! Not just singles Iand many others have particularlyenjoyed the throaty roar of GordonBlackburns Triumph! Pitch perfectand spot on. For me its like Shepherds pieover Pasta, real ale over lager,Brown sauce over Red and I sup-pose I`ll always look up when Ihear the purr of a Merlin overhead, stare at the sleek lines of an EType and smile at an Enfield onfull chat blasting through sectionEight!
