sions, crashes and other such destructionin his 2003-16 Discovery Channel series“MythBusters,” it was clear that this isa man firmly in touch with his inner 12-year-old boy.Which makes him the perfect choice to
guide a cast of similarly minded younginventors, builders and robotics whizzesthrough the process of testing popularmyths in “MythBusters Jr.”Premiering Wednesday, Jan. 2, on Sci-
ence Channel, the new hourlong seriessees Savage joined by six of the bright-est minds ages 12-15 as they show offtheir ingenuity in designing, building,fabricating and testing. In 10 episodes,the group will determine whether it’spossible to make things like a jet packfrom a fire extinguisher or functioningcar tires from duct tape.“It’s not a show about teaching these
guys how to do stuff. It’s not a kidsshow,” Savage explained to a recentgathering of journalists in Beverly Hills,Calif. “These are the new ‘MythBusters’and I’m their camp counselor and theiradviser and sometimes their test subject.But the moment I heard that phrase,
putting blocks on your shoe, to see if Can-nan can reach the pedals.”Needless to say, some things pass and
others fail -- sometimes spectacularly.“This is the best part about making the
show,” Savage says, “is that, you know,we’re filming all these pieces, the camera,we’re building, we have one week tomake every single episode, it’s reallytight, and then when big things fall on bigthings, the pure delight on their faces isjust they can’t hide it. It’s like that’s whywe’re doing this.”

NEIL CARROLLRecently, Bayonne lost one of its greatest political figures, Neil
Carroll, who passed away at the age of 91. Neil had a remark-able career, having held positions at all levels of governmentfrom Hudson County to the staffs of four members of the U.S.House of Representatives.Throughout the course of his years in government, Neil helped
thousands of people. As the Chief of Staff for Congressmen NeilGallagher, Dominick Daniels, Joe LeFante, and Frank Guarini,Neil was often the person that Hudson County residents turnedto for help from the federal government. Decades later, peoplewere still thanking him for arranging for veterans’ healthcare,finding their loved ones places in hospitals, and obtaining otherbenefits for them. Neil always remembered where he was from,and that government had to work for ordinary people. In 2016, Neil was recognized for his public service when a sec-
tion of Gregg-Bayonne County Park was named after him. Atthe ceremony for that honor, Congressman Neil Gallagher re-called that, in 1962, Neil Carroll and his family kept apart twofemale members of the Kennedy family who couldn’t stand eachother. Both women wanted to speak at a Gallagher campaignevent without seeing each other. Neil made sure that the
Kennedy women got the arrangements thatthey wanted. That was just a small sample ofthe smart staff work that Neil did over hislong and varied career. Neil’s family values service to the people of
Bayonne. His father, Cornelius, began hispolice career as a patrolman and rose to therank of Chief. Neil’s son, Neil, Jr. is an attor-ney for the County of Hudson. Neil’s daugh-ter, Patty Carroll Smith, is a counselor for theBayonne Board of Education. Neil’s son-in-law, Mark Smith,was my predecessor as Mayor. The family is grateful that Neillived to see his grandson, Neil Carroll III, assume the office ofFirst Ward Council Member last month. Interestingly, grandfa-ther Neil did not win that Council seat himself when he was acandidate in 1962. Although Neil Carroll did serve one term inelected office as a Hudson County Freeholder, it was in ap-pointed positions where Neil found his greatest opportunities forservice.On behalf of the City of Bayonne, I would like to offer our
condolences to the Carroll family. May Neil be long remem-bered for all that he did for the people of our community.
