From the Principal Trinity Catholic College Lismore the Lantern No. 1 Week Three Term One Tuesday, 9th February, 2016 Dear Parents/Carers, “Here we are again, happy as can be, All good friends and jolly good company.” Although these words were written as lyrics for a song by Raymond Wallace in 1931, they do resonate some relevance as we say, “Welcome to the New School Year!” We do hope that all members of our school community return happy and eager to resume old friendships and be introduced to new ones. It is our sincerest hope that all students, as they gather to commence the new school year, will regard their opportunity for education as a privilege rather than an obligation and so embrace this new school year with enthusiasm, determination and a positive mind set. The great St Thomas Aquinas made the comment that, “Whatever is received is received according to the mode of its receiver”. Again, we hope that all students return in goodwill and with an attitude to do the best they can for themselves and for their fellow students. In a sense, our school has a double staff; the staff that performs within the school and that very important “staff” that performs within the home. Your child’s education can be greatly enhanced by your involvement at home, in particular, but also through involvement in school activities. It is parents’ enthusiasm, support and involvement that will inspire children to do their best. Children frequently adopt attitudes and opinions held by the adults they look up to; and enthusiasm for learning is no exception. If children sense that parents consider their education to be a high priority, they are likely to view it in a more positive manner themselves. Positive reinforcement will help children to adopt a more enthusiastic attitude towards their learning processes. When the Gospels described Jesus’ Baptism, they told how the heavens opened and God’s voice was heard to say, “This is the blessed one in whom I take delight”. It seems that for the rest of His life, Jesus was always in some way conscious of His Father’s words. His actions were always positive and supportive of others and His words were always gentle, encouraging and forgiving. As we all teach in Jesus’ name, we all have Him as a wonderful example from whom to draw inspiration and confidence as we, the staff at school and the “staff” at home, work together to create the best possible learning environment for all the students in our school. Once again, “Welcome everyone, to the New School Year!” WELCOME TO OUR NEW YEAR 7’S On Friday, 29th January almost 200 excited and no doubt a little nervous Year 7’s began their first day. My thanks in particular to Mrs Sharyn Gill-Andrews and the Year 7 Tutor teachers for all their efforts in making our Year 7’s welcome and soothing any worries. WELCOME TO OUR NEW STAFF MEMBERS We also have a number of new staff commencing with or recommencing with us in 2016. I would like to personally welcome our new staff members: Mrs Serena Rose Head of HSIE and teaching Economics, Legal Studies, Geography and Studies of Religion Miss Pauline Leeson Careers Adviser Ms Cheryl Rawson Teaching Economics, Business Studies, Studies of Religion and History Ms Elizabeth McInerney Teaching Tech Mandatory, Food Tech and Textiles

Assistant Principal - Senior School

Welcome back to all our families for another wonderful year

I sincerely thank all those parentscarers who have ensured that your young person was ready to begin another scholastic year Concerning a hardcopy planner it will be a bit challenging for those students who relied on a hardcopy planner but with the introduction of Lighthouse I feel confident that we can support your daughters and sons to achieve the best they can Every senior student received a booklet called lsquoSenior Planner Note section lsquo to assist our students with the notification of many varied aspects of school life Please ask to actually see it I would ask that they carry this booklet in their protective case of their MacBook which is a compulsory item More information will follow over the Term on the lsquohow torsquo for parents to stay in tune with the learning of their senior student

The planner has been replaced by the introduction of our Lighthouse portal This learning platform will allow our students and families to centralize information that will be a support to our teaching and learning The Learning Curve program continues and can be accessed on the front page of Lighthouse The Tutors Heads of House and I intend to assist your sonsdaughters to take full advantage of this material this year As a parentcarer can I ask that you regularly check the Lighthouse portal to ensure that you are in the loop of all that is happening for your sondaughter You will receive information about upcoming tasks and also notification of work not completed It will help with your questions that we should ask like lsquowhat assessment task is coming up and do you need any help with it todayrsquo I know the response you will get might not be helpful but we are all part of this endeavour

YEAR 12 2016Year 12 students have entered their second Term of the HSC year - a time of consolidation and serious effort prior to the Mid Course Exams later this Term Miss Leeson our new Careers Adviser has organised a Careers evening and talk from the Board of Studies on 24th February commencing at 5pm in the TSC All parentscarers of our senior students are invited to attend as this will be one opportunity to consider the whereto from here for the Graduating class of 2016

Year 12 students have been issued (via email) with another permission request form concerning Wednesday afternoons This is to be completed by all Year 12 students as circumstances might have changed and choices might differ from Term 4 last year Included in the handout is our required information that all senior students need to complete if they intend to drive to and from the College Without this form completed and recorded by us your sondaughter does not have our permission to be driving by car to the College Please assist us by completing this asap and returning it to the SMS office even though you might have already completed it

YEAR 11 2016I welcome Year 11 to the senior curriculum and the commencement of their HSC journey I trust that you are settling into the increased expectations of your teachers and that you are already putting in place the right supports to stay on top of your studies Please know that if you are a bit overwhelmed this is perfectly natural at this point just keep putting one foot in front of the other at this stage

Year 11 are expected to be at school each and every Wednesday afternoon or at TAFE First Term this year I will be working with Year 11 study teachers to support the introduction of the Lighthouse portal to all Year 11 We will also review study skills and assist them in the creation of study timetables This way we should have an easier transition from a hardcopy planner to using their MacBooks in the most effective manner

YEAR 10 2016A warm welcome to Year 10 students into the Senior School For parents please now be aware that your son or daughter is in Year 10 your contact has changed from Mr Loadsman to myself There are a number of subtle changes between the Middle School and Senior School one key difference is that every lunch time Year 10 are expected to come to SMS for lunch not remain on the Middle School site I know many of them are looking forward to receiving their MacBooks on Tuesday 9th February can I remind families that a protective carry case is a compulsory accessory for the MacBook to be purchased by the family All MacBooks will be issued with a clear protective cover which is not to be removed If a student does remove the plastic cover and breaks the tabs there will be a replacement cost of $70

PRESENTATION - UNIFORMFinally an area that causes the most indirect negative moments at school and that is how a student presents themself Our uniform when worn correctly is very presentable and really sets a standard that others admire In my mind how a student presents themself reflects the level of pride they have in who they are it is one external measure that I use to gauge how someone is travelling At the end of Term 3 all senior students were sent a letter about the uniform and how a number of students needed to smarten up their presentation Can I ask that parentscarers assist us in this process to ensure that school shoes are black conventional leather lace up school shoes that boys shirts are long enough to tuck in that a belt is on the shorts and that the socks can stay up to their knees For our girls hair is to be tied back their tunics are at the middle of their knees and jewellery is inline with the expectations All of this information is available online from the College website but if in doubt please contact your Head of House or myself

Together in Education Mrs Karen Davies

Assistant Principal - Middle School

A very warm welcome to new and continuing families at Trinity It has been great to see so many happy faces and hear lsquohellosrsquo in the yard as we pass by People are excited about starting another year and that includes the staff Hopefully we can all carry that excitement and enthusiasm well into the months ahead There are a couple of matters that I draw to your attention at this stage of the year

PLANNERSThis year College Planners have been provided for Years 7-9 students only Students in senior school will be utilising computers for their organisational needs Parents of students in the younger years should take a couple of moments to look through the Planner as I am positive that there is much information which can assist you in the process of your childrsquos education The Planner is a major component of our Pastoral Care program and will be used by tutors in our Tutor group and pastoral periods Parents are asked to enter signatures in respective weeks and use the Planner as a method of communicating with teachers

STUDENT ATTENDANCEIt is most important that students attend school each school day unless a very good reason exists (eg sickness) for them to be absent Please donrsquot allow students to stay at home because a friend is visiting you are going on a shopping trip itrsquos the childrsquos birthday itrsquos the childrsquos parentrsquos birthday and so on Absences often create gaps in the sequencing of lessons that often are not recovered If your child had excessive days absent from school last year please set a goal for a vastly improved rate of attendance for them

Should your child be absent then the reason for the absence should be conveyed to the College by either a reply to the SMS alert sent to the families of absent students the absence email address the absence telephone line or the paper slips available in the Planners

ICTAll students at Trinity will have access to the College ICT resources Being a user also implies that students and their parents are familiar with the conditions of use You are referred to the College Internet site and under the student services tab you will find our ICT guidelines These will be unpacked for our junior students in the coming weeks The guidelines indicate what is appropriate what is not appropriate and procedures to follow in such instances

BE YOUR BESTLast year we had thousands of tokens submitted highlighting areas in which the majority of our students were being their best This program will operate again this year and the focus for the first two weeks is on Being Respectful Teachers have been asked to limit the distribution of these tokens to about 4 per class taught per cycle so if your child comes home with news that heshe was given a token then it is a big deal Students deposit their tokens in their House box and then will be in contention for winning vouchers (two draws per House each term) culminating in the draw for 5 iPads on the last day of the school year

Congratulations to the winners of our 2015 iPad draw

YEAR 12 ANCIENT HISTORY

Year 12 Ancient History has been studying the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii as part of the HSC course and they were looking at the impact of the economy on the town As part of the study we look at bakeries or pistrina Over 30 have been found in Pompeii alone and 85 carbonised loaves of bread found in the ovens of some bakeries To get an idea of the diet and economy of the Ancient Romans the students found a bread recipe and were keen to try and make Pompeian bread so they spent a lesson in the kitchen recreating the loaves Some loaves were more successful than others but all had fun and were impressed with the results of their labours

What is the eSmart Digital Licence

The eSmart Digital Licence is an online challenge which uses quizzes videos and games to prepare Australian children (aged ten and over) to be smart safe and responsible digital citizens

The Digital Licence consists of eight learning modules which evaluate comprehension of key technology and cybersafety topics and equip children with the knowledge and skills they require to learn play and socialise online Each module takes approximately 15 minutes to complete

In addition to teaching core digital skills the Digital Licence will promote conversations about online safety between young people and their parents carers and teachers

Why was it created

Over the past two decades our lives have been transformed by a digital revolution Children are the greatest beneficiaries of this digital era The age at which they first engage with technology is dropping steadily and the time and range of activities they conduct online is increasing with the proliferation of smart phones

While there are many benefits to engaging online children are also vulnerable to risks such as cyberbullying sexting privacy breaches identity theft and exposure to inappropriate content

In order to keep young people safe online it is important to equip them with the skills to identify and manage online risks Parents also play a very important role ndash almost nine in ten 10-11 year olds say parents are their first port of call when they have an online safety issue However many parents feel ill-equipped to fulfil this role and most parents report needing support to help them advise their children on online safety

The most effective way to upskill parents is experiential learning and intergenerational conversations It is therefore important that parents have conversations with their children about whatrsquos going on in their online world The Digital Licence will help parents to start these conversations with their children

We recommend that every parent encourages their child to complete the Digital Licence before purchasing a smartphone tablet or other digital device for their child

How do I get an eSmart Digital Licence

The Digital Licence will be made available to every grade 6 student in Australia in 2015 ndash almost 300000 children ndash thanks to a grant of over $12 million from Google The free licences will be accessed by grade 6 teachers from the Digital Licence website wwwdigitallicencecomau

Parents and teachers of students from other year levels can also purchase a Digital Licence at wwwdigitallicencecomau

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation aims to provide scholarships to as many disadvantaged and vulnerable children as possible

wwwtwittercomeSmart_AMF

About eSmart eSmart an initiative of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation uses a cultural change approach to improve cybersafety and reduce cyberbullying

eSmart is based on the premise that real behavioural and cultural change requires systemic long-term multifaceted interventions aimed at creating positive respectful and inclusive cultures which reduce bullying and cyberbullying and increase online safety

There are two components to eSmart - the first provides a prevention and risk management framework to Australian schools and libraries to help them better integrate cybersafety practices and promote the safe use of online technology The second the eSmart Digital Licence is a practical tool to help schools libraries and the whole community educate Australian children about being safe online

Our goal is to create an eSmart Australia

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is a national charity protecting children from violence and creating behavioural change in the community to reduce bullying and cyberbullying

The Foundation was set up in memory of Alannah and Madeline Mikac aged six and three who were tragically killed with their mother and 32 others at Port Arthur Tasmania on 28 April 1996

Careers News

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself My name is Miss Pauline Leeson and I will be undertaking the role of Careers Advisor at Trinity Catholic College Lismore throughout 2016 I will be replacing Mr Geoff Bermingham who as many of you would be aware is on Long Service Leave for the year Most of my time will be spent working with Years 10 11 and 12 in relation to their careers and future education and work options

My first task for the year is to ensure that all Year 10 students are organised for their Work Experience Program which will take place in the last week of this term from 4th - 8th April All students were given all the appropriate paperwork late last year and should be well on the way to arranging where they are going to do their Work Experience We have had a meeting with all Year 10 students this week and replaced any lost or missing forms and have reminded them that these forms all need to be returned to the Careers Office by Friday 4th March

So I would urge parents of Year 10 students to be discussing this with your children providing encouragement and support to ensure that these arrangements are made and the forms are returned to me by 4th March

Secondly I need to ask senior students and their parents to save a date On 24th February there will be a Careers Information Evening held at Trinity commencing with a Mini Careers Expo at 500pm followed by presentations by representatives of several universities and concluding with information about HSC requirements More information has been provided in this issue by Mrs Nicolas and a letter outlining the evening in more detail will be sent to students in the near future

I look forward to working with the students at Trinity throughout the year and am only too happy to offer my assistance and guidance where I can

Mrs Victoria Nicolas

Director of Curriculum

The Chaimongkol family became Australian Citizens

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation aims to provide scholarships to as many disadvantaged and vulnerable children as possible

wwwfacebookcomAlannahandMadeline

wwwtwittercomeSmart_AMF

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation aims to provide scholarships to as many disadvantaged and vulnerable children as possible

wwwfacebookcomAlannahandMadeline

wwwtwittercomeSmart_AMF
