From the Principal Trinity Catholic College Lismore the Lantern No. 10 Week Ten Term Two Wednesday, 29th June, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians, Each of us has had an experience when the power has failed and we are left in darkness. What was familiar and assuring to us is no longer visible and trickles of fear and apprehension course through our body. What a relief when a match is struck and our familiar surrounds come back to comfort us. Likewise, if we are out and have to walk through an area that is poorly lit, we might feel frightened and less hopeful about our safety till we reach where it is well lit. It could be that we experience a young friend or family member of ours getting “off track” in life. It might appear to us that they are simply being defiant, whereas, they might be struggling with self-confidence and a lack of hope about their ability to cope with life as we wish it to be. The following verse titled, “The Light upon the Sea”, uses the sea as an image of life: “There was a time it seemed as though My life was tossing to and fro And I, left with nowhere to go, Was subject to the sea. But there, ahead, a beam of light Peered through the darkness of the night And granted me clearer light That I might be set free. I steered a course towards the land To find a refuge on the sand And maybe touch the gentle hand That guided me along. And when I reached the coast that night, Upon a hill a shining light Was tended by a welcome sight, My friends had led me home.” Robert Bise. There is nothing more certain in life than that young people will forever appreciate “the gentle hand that guided me along” and for us to be “a shining light” that is always there for them. As Christian we, likewise, need our guiding light and when Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life,” John 8:12 He was offering Himself as our guiding light. The Catholic Catechism tells us that, “The light of Jesus illumines the eyes of our heart and teaches us to see everything in the light of His truth and compassion.” No. 2715. The challenge for adults is to somehow be the shining light on the hill for young people when it comes to living Christian values such as truthfulness and compassion, love and forgiveness, patience and gentleness. In as much as God the Father revealed Himself to us through Jesus, so we can reveal Jesus to others by the words and actions of our lives. START OF TERM 3 A reminder that Term 3 commences on Tuesday with the Monday being a staff day. STAFF DAY – FIRST DAY TERM 4 At the last meeting the College Council endorsed my request for an additional staff day. This will take place on the first day of Term 4 (Monday 10th October). The purpose of this day is to allow the various departments to work on curriculum mapping to ensure as smooth as possible between the various year levels and between the Middle and Senior Campuses.

the Lantern No. 10 Week Ten Term Two

Wednesday, 29th June, 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Each of us has had an experience when the power has failed and we are left in darkness.

The following verse titled, “The Light upon the Sea”, uses the sea as an image of life:

“There was a time it seemed as though My life was tossing to and froAnd I, left with nowhere to go, Was subject to the sea.But there, ahead, a beam of lightPeered through the darkness of the night

And granted me clearer lightThat I might be set free.I steered a course towards the land To find a refuge on the sand

And maybe touch the gentle hand That guided me along. And when I reached the coast that night, Upon a hill a shining lightWas tended by a welcome sight,My friends had led me home.” Robert Bise.

START OF TERM 3A reminder that Term 3 commences on Tuesday with the Monday being a staff day.

STAFF DAY – FIRST DAY TERM 4At the last meeting the College Council endorsed my request for an additional staff day. This will take place on the first day of Term 4 (Monday 10th October). PEER SUPPORTFriday 24th of June marked the beginning of the Peer Support program at Trinity. Our Year 7 cohort met in small groups with two Year 10 Peer Leaders to begin working through a range of activities that focus on resilience. The Year 10 students were very keen to establish a rapport with those Year 7 students they will be working with over eight sessions through Term 3 and into Term 4. These sessions will allow students the opportunity to acknowledge their strengths and achievements; identify people who support them; and learn how to view challenges as an opportunity for growth. In addition to these small group sessions the Year 7 tutors will engage with each group and assist in debriefing the Year 7 students and reinforcing the main points of focus for each session during the fortnight between meetings. The Year 10 leaders will also undertake a process of briefing and debriefing, pre and post each meeting, to assist them in their role as Peer Leaders and group facilitators. The photos below show some of the groups ‘in action’ during their first time together.

TRIVIA NIGHTSCongratulations to the junior students who participated in the recent Junior Trivia night held at the College. It was great to see the high level of involvement and student participation on the evening.

COLLEGE PHOTOSAs you would be aware there was a need to postpone the College photos which were scheduled for earlier this Term. The new dates for College photos are Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st of August. Please note that students will be reissued with new photo envelopes early next term. To avoid any confusion on the day it is requested that students dispose of the previously issued envelopes and utilise the one which will be issued during week one Term 3.

BRAINSTORM PRODUCTIONThis Friday, Year 9 will be attending workshop with Brainstorm Productions titled “Sticks and Stones” which focusses on Bullying and Resilience issues. All year groups attend a topic specific workshop each year at Trinity. Please see the attachment to learn more about these workshops.

YEAR 11 CHEMISTRY students (photos right) prepare for the big SCU Titration Challenge. They had an adventurous day, explored life at university and tested their titration skill against 20 other local teams. We await results . Thanks to Mrs Parker and Mr Kubils for organising the teams.

PRELIMINARY BIOLOGY students (photos left)busily classifying the 1.7 million species here on earth. They used their powers of observation, created dichotomous keys and drew scientific

diagrams of the various plant and animal specimens.

As a busy Term closes I would like to thank both students and Science staff for their hard work and dedication.

Enjoy a well deserved winter break . Mrs Sheila Martineau - Head of Science

WINTER SLEEP OUT 2016It was the night of 24th June, and with weather predictions showing a minimum temperature of 3˚C, and winds that were colder than ice, 150 students, ranging from Year 7 to Year 12, slept on the cold, hard concrete of SMS site. The night was filled with games, pres-entations, and a very filling dinner of rice, all in order to raise money and awareness for the thousands of homeless Australians that live on the streets every night. $450 was raised in total, for the St. Vin-cent De Paul Winter Appeal. Along with this donation, bags of warm clothes were donated by students as well as hygiene packs compris-ing of toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, shampoo and conditioner.

Even though it was very, very cold, everyone that came along enjoyed themselves. We would like to thank Mrs Axman who was a major contributor to the night, the staff that stayed and battled the cold, the 6 Sleep Out Committee Members (Scout Wallen, Shelby Glavocih, Billy Bird, Kaleb Auld, Tara Cocciola and Joey McCalman) and finally, the students who came and gave up their Friday night. Without your attitude and enthusiasm, it would not have been a successful event. We both hope that next year is bigger, better and warmer!!!

Students studying HSIE subjects have been very busy this Semester with a range of excursions taking place across the faculty. The Modern History group are also on their way to Vietnam as part of their studies on Indochina during the July holidays. Years 11 and 12 Legal Studies have been to the Lismore Courthouse to watch both local and district court cases this Semester. Year 10 Commerce and Year 12 Legal Studies had a presentation by the NSW Student Liaison Officer from Legal aid.

HSC BUSINESS STUDIES students have participated in a HSC study day which revised the course.

The annual YEAR 7 HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY EXCURSIONS enjoyed good weather on their day in Ballina and at Flat Rock.

YEAR 7 HISTORY students practised the basic skills of History including the use of primary and secondary sources to inform historical knowledge. The excursion, which supported this learning was to the Alstonville Cemetery, Ballina Maritime Museum and the Ballina Pioneer Cemetery.

“We visited Alstonville Cemetery, Ballina Maritime Museum and the Ballina Pioneer Cemetery. We arrived at the Alstonville Cemetery and looked around. We filled out a work sheet about some of the headstones and learnt lots about the place and the people who contributed to the area. We then went to the maritime museum. We looked around and were given a tour of all the old marine artefacts. Finally, we headed to the Ballina Pioneer Cemetery, did some (etchings) colouring in of the headstones and learnt about the pioneers of Ballina. We enjoyed visiting the Maritime museum the most because it was interesting and fun as well as informative.

By Eliotte Walford-Smith & Tess Edwards - Year 7

In YEAR 7 GEOGRAPHY students practise Geographical research and learn about the coastal ecosystem. At Flat Rock students learn about the vegetation, and conduct surveys of the area.

The Year 9 Excursions were early in Term 2 and linked the learning for the Semester to real world examples with an emphasis on building skills and developing primary and secondary research skills.

In YEAR 9 HISTORY students learn about the movement of people within Australia and our local area as well as the World Wars. The Lismore Museum and memorial park are excellent resources which provide students with detailed knowledge about the relevance of both of these topics to this region.

On Monday 2nd May Year 9 History went on excursion to Lismore Memorial Baths and Regional Museum. I found that this excursion was very educational and beneficial. I was able to find out about both Lismore’s heritage and past. As I looked upon the several monuments of our past and of the wars that many great soldiers fought in, I realised how important it is that young people learn about the great people that have gone before us. I was able to marvel at the monuments remembering the battle of Tobruk, Vietnam, World War I, World War II, the tank of the Australian Military and the anchor of the Australian Navy. In the museum we were able to not only look at items from the wars but also items from when Lismore was first established and our past. I definitely enjoyed this excursion.

By Narika Snape - Year 9

YEAR 9 HISTORY also had the once in a lifetime opportunity during Term 2 to hear a presentation by Mr Dennis Davis, an original ‘Rat of Tobruk’. Mr Davis spoke to the whole of Year 9 on the day he attended the Anzac Day Ceremony. His stories were insightful and engaging and gave a sense of the enormity and the realities of war. He is genuinely a living treasure.

On Wednesday 22nd June Year 9 photography had the privilege to visit the Lismore Regional Gallery to view a 30-year retrospective of Australia’s most well known band and musician photographer, Tony Mott. The education officer, Claudie Frock was there to tell us some inside stories from her experiences with Tony Mott when he came to the Lismore Regional Gallery to give a talk. The exhibition, “What a Life!” was filled with beautiful photographs from sincere portraits to powerful, live shots of rock and roll bands and legends like David Bowie, Mick Jagger, AC/DC and many more. Visiting this exhibition was a perfect way to end off this term for Year 9 photography.

Damien McDonald - Year 9 Photography

Photos - Nick McLaren - Year 9 Photography

Listening to the World War 2 veteran gave us an insight into what it was like to go to war. It informed us of the challenges soldiers faced in their daily lives. Fighting diseases, hunger, thirst, grief and homesickness were among the many factors. It was very interesting and you found yourself being absorbed into his experiences and left overwhelmingly appreciative of the sacrifices young men and women made to leave home and fight for the free country we live in today.

Tayla Sattler - Year 9

The YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY excursion was to Byron Bay as part of the students’ studies in local communities and coastal management. Students reflected on their excursion to Byron.

‘I really enjoyed the excursion to Byron Bay. I enjoyed talking to the local residents and walking through the town’

‘It was a fun day and an interesting excursion experience’

‘The experience was good and I learnt some new things such as how much the weather can affect shops in Byron Bay’

‘We had to go to Byron Bay on an excursion to research human expansion and how it affects natural processes. The best part was where we got to walk around Byron Bay and survey people’

Mrs Kenyon MemorialOn Thurday 23rd June, Mrs Brown and Sister Mary invited past St Joseph’s students to a Memorial in the Ministry Centre for Mrs Lyn Kenyon, a long term teacher at St Joseph’s Alstonville. The news came as a shock to hear the passing of a teacher that was known and loved by all. In the Ministry Centre we shared happy memories that we had from the years that Mrs Kenyon had taught us. We shared prayers with one another for Mrs Kenyon and her family at this time. We had the chance to write down the feelings and memories that we had shared with Mrs Kenyon. In cards we past these onto the family and lit candle to symbolise our hope that Mrs Kenyon now has eternal life in the hands of God.

We all hope that her family may find peace and will one day find happiness again.

TRIBUTE TO MRS GLORIA MORTIMERMrs Gloria Mortimer born 11.11.1927, ex- Staff member of Trinity, completed her earthly life on 23rd May 2016. Gloria was farewelled from St Carthage’s Cathedral Lismore on Thursday 26th May.Gloria and husband Ken had celebrated 68 years of marriage and her Funeral Mass reflected that long and faithful commitment. Son Ken and daughter, the late Petria McOmish, Gloria’s children and their partners, her grandchildren and great grandchildren,

and a number of fostered children, were all very special to her. Special mention was made in the eulogy of how happy and proud Gloria was to be a teacher at St Mary’s/Trinity over those thirty years. As well as a teacher of Sewing/Textiles and Design, Gloria was famous for her sporting pursuits and involvement. As a seamstress, Gloria was always involved in costume for the many musicals performed by students of St Mary’s and Woodlawn College.Gloria was fondly known as ‘Mort’ and was remembered by many for her love of young people, especially those who may not have had the same opportunities as others. There are still a number of teachers, some themselves students of hers, who remember Gloria fondly from her days at the College. At her funeral, Gloria’s grand-daughter Cassandra spoke of Gloria’s immense love for those in her care and how she loved nothing more than seeing her beloved hockey team take home the wins!Gloria was involved in supporting hockey and netball in the wider community until recent years.A special Memorial Service was held shortly after Gloria’s death at Mortimer Oval in Lismore, the ‘home ground’ of Lismore Swans Football Team, with many local identities paying their respects. The page from the 1993 Trinity Year Book (next page) sums up 30 years of service at St Mary’s/Trinity by Gloria.Vale Gloria and we remember with love and gratitude, your contribu-tion to the College from 1963 – 1993.Rest in Peace Gloria.
