7:30 a.m.

Jeremiah 8:18–22 (nrsV) 18My joy is gone, grief is upon me, my heart is sick. 19Hark, the cry of my poor people from far and wide in the land: “Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King not in her?” (“Why have they provoked me to anger with their images, with their foreign idols?”) 0“The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” 1For the hurt of my poor people I am hurt, I mourn, and dismay has taken hold of me. Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of my poor people not been restored?

11:00 a.m. luke 19:1–10 (nrsV) 1He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. 5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” 6So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. 7All who

saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.” 8Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” 9Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

6:00 p.m.

mattheW 1:1–17 (nrsV) 1An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron,

and Hezron the father of Aram, 4 and Aram the father of Aminadab, and Aminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6and Jesse the father of King David. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7and Solomon

the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, 8and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 1And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Salathiel, and Salathiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim,

and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. 17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen

generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.

So much happens in the religious world these days that Sightings must be selective in what it accents. For example, this week I’ll pass up comment on the hokey “Tomb of the Cozy Jesus Family”

on TV and the multi-page treatments of The Secret, a huge best-seller. They both went into my file politely named by a former editor “Bouille Chitte.” On the whole, Sightings prefers to look past the big headlines and see evidences of multi-form religious influences.

Here is this week’s, from the New York Times: “Sri Lankan Government Finds Ally in Buddhist Monks,” by Somini Sengupta. It’s not as up-close, intimate, or sexy as the “tomb” or the “secret” stories, or a hundred other flashy items — but given the

duration of bloody troubles in the island nation of Sri Lanka and the religious identifications of the fighting parties, it’s worth our attention.

Full-scale war has broken out there again, where 00,000 civilians have become refugees and 1,300 civilians were killed last year, with the Nordic peace-keepers among them being

disdained and defied. Why is this interesting?

Here’s why: In a world where we are trained to see that killing in the name of faith, or faith-plus-nation (or tribe), is something that the “wicked and evil Islamofascists” or militant Hindus in India do, it is worth observing that the religious ties in Sri Lanka are a)Christian and b)Buddhist. The Buddhist monks in the Jathika Hela Urumaya or National Heritage Party have gained nine seats in Parliament. “Ethnic

Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism” is the pulse and motor of this governmental party.

Fighting for autonomy are the separatists, the Tamil minority, also not so nice — and mostly Hindu and Christian. The Buddhist monks see foreign influence on this front. The Venerable Athuraliye Rathana, who leads the National Heritage Party, says, “We have been not just preaching. We have been fighting.”

Are the Buddhist clerics gun-firers and polluters of politics? Their leader shrugged off the question: “Was Mahatma Gandhi polluted?” Most monks keep their distance from the war, but, writes Sengupta, “there is nothing in Buddhist doctrine that prohibits or frowns on activism in earthly matters.” “How those faiths and ethnic groups live together ... is at the heart of the brutal civil war that has raged since 1983,” with monks in the vanguard. Monks have stood by their kings and fought holy wars for centuries.

To the point: Sometimes Native Americans (in North and South America) get portrayed as peace-loving people in tune with Nature and Spirit, while Westerners are seen as killers. A close-up look counters such oversimplified

claims of peace, as more archaeological and further recent evidence of violence elsewhere are revealed. And we often get challenged when talking about belligerency and lethality in religion: Make an exception with Buddhism, it is said, which is always peaceful.

Not so. While Buddhists like these monks do not wake up in the morning and look for who to kill “for Buddha” or Buddhist culture, they do connect their faith and philosophy to national and other causes — just as

Muslims currently specialize in doing, and as Christians often have.

In this game of war-like versus peace-like religions and faith communities, one sadly has to note that it’s a level playing field, and at different times different gods and theologies get invoked to justify killing.

I wonder what time it is. We seem to be living in a time where every second is accounted

for. There does not appear to be any free time anymore. There appears to be no time to sit on the porch and rock as my grandmother used to do. There appears to be no time to drive the speed limit since if you do, there is going to be an accident. There appears to be little time left to get our acts in order to stop us from killing this planet. There also appears to be little time left to save our children from gun violence.

Every day, eight children die from gunfire in the richest nation in the world. Maybe it’s time to save our children.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that ,87 children died from gunfire in our nation in 003. That is one child every three hours, eight per day

and fifty-four every week. Regrettably, 810 died from a gun-related incident of suicide. Suicide. Is this world so bad that all hope is being lost? Maybe it’s time to save our children.

Eighty-nine percent of the gun-related deaths were boys. Forty-one percent of these deaths were African American. The firearm death rate for African American males from ages 15–19 is more than four times that of White males the same age. Maybe it’s time to save our children.

The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) notes that:

“The number of children and teens killed by gun violence in 003 alone exceeds the number of American fighting men and women killed in hostile action in Iraq from 003 to April 006.” Our children are at war in our own homeland. Maybe it’s time to save our children.

So what can be done? CDF has come up with an eight-point plan to help keep our children safer from gun violence.

Support common sense gun safety measures. Call your respective member of Congress and express your views on the need for legislative action on gun measures protecting our babies.

Remove guns from your home. No gun lock or hiding place is effective enough.

Foster a climate of nonviolent conflict-resolution in your home, children’s school, congregation and community. War and violence is not the answer.

Monitor the television programs your children watch; monitor how they use the Internet; and refuse to buy violent video games.

Focus public attention on child gun deaths. Talk about this crisis in church; lift up the names of children in the community killed by gun violence; write the editor and, above all, talk with your children.

1.

5.

Engage in child watch visitation programs. Do something. There are 4–5 nonfatal firearm injuries for every gun-related death.

Provide children positive alternatives to the streets so they can feel safe and protected. If we do not provide alternatives, the gangs will.

Organize a ceasefire initiative in your community.

These eight steps are a great beginning. Maybe if we slow down a little, we can find the time to save our children. Maybe there is time to save our babies.

THIRD SUNDAy IN LENT

WHEN GOD ENTERS OUR PICTUREclose-up or panoramic view

When people say, “Look at the big picture,” usually, this is good advice. A narrow focus can cut out some of the surroundings

that give meaning to what we have placed at the center. Looking only at the forehead of a batter in a baseball game, you might see only some perspiration. Widen the focus and you see clear eyes, looking out intensely, enabling the batter to respond appropriately to whatever may be thrown in his direction. Open to the whole field and you may feel the excitement of a championship game and a close contest.

The greater the extent to which we can see life as a whole, the more easily we can find God’s place in it. As we mature and go through life’s variety of experiences, many people come to see God as the One who makes sense out of it all. We do well to have our lens open to all that life brings, the bitter and the good. Seeing the full picture, we can identify what things have lasting worth. For example, we should not limit ourselves to the dilemma of why bad things sometimes happen to good people. We need to see also how dedicated people, inspired and strengthened by their faith, have acted in ways that restore goodness and hope.

On the other side of the issue, though, looking only at the big picture can make us miss some of life’s intricate beauties. A garden may be impressive, but how wonderful it is to see one flower, with all of its depth and details! God’s providence can be found in a glimmer of hope that lifts our spirits in a time of discouragement. God’s love can be felt in a tender touch or a gentle word spoken by a friend. God can be found in both large and small. What we need to do is to look carefully and see where God is at work.

the results of a redeemed life

THE GIVING ATTITUDE

“Bill, what can I do with a couple like the Willie Weekenders? All they think of are their travels and pleasures,” said Pastor Don.

“I suggest that we wait until they are ready to listen,” advised old Bill. “Hopefully, there will come a day when they feel the need for a more substantial life. We must be ready then to talk to them.”

“To tell them to look to God,” said the Pastor.

“And to surrender themselves to Christ,” counseled Bill. “From that beginning, by careful coaching, we must bring them to giving generously of their time, talents and money. We must remember that it takes time to change a lifestyle.”

“I feel a special call to save their souls, lest they suffer in the hereafter,” declared Don.

“I’m more interested in what GIVING can do to the remainder of the Weekenders,” remarked Don. “Do you know? I suspect that the reward Saint Paul promised the Corinthians in II Corinthians 9:8,” continued Bill, “was this very upward- and outward-looking attitude.”

“You don’t have to wait for the End. I am, right now, Resurrection and Life. The one who believes in me, even though he or she dies, will live. And everyone who lives believing in me does not ultimately die at all. Do you believe this?” (John 11:5–6, The Message)

9Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, 10thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And this is what some of you used to be. But you were washed, you

were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. —1 Corinthians 6:9–11

.“There are different ways of serving, but the same lord is served.”1 corinthians 12:5 (Tev)

chUrch information

JanuaryIsaiah 40:1-2 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.

FebruaryIsaiah 40:4–5 4 “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

MarchIsaiah 40:11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

AprilIsaiah 40:18 To whom, then, will you compare God? What image will you compare him to?

May Isaiah 40:21 Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

JuneIsaiah 40:25 “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.

JulyIsaiah 40:26 Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

AugustIsaiah 40:27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God”?

SeptemberIsaiah 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

OctoberIsaiah 40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

NovemberIsaiah 40:30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;

DecemberIsaiah 40:31 But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

RestorationA God of My heartfelt hope for the congregation in the year 2007 is that each member

will fully embrace what it means to be loved by a God who restores. God is a God of redemption and not a God of condemnation.

Isaiah 40 (NIV)
