Attracting teams of four players from all over the country, this prestigious invita-tion-only event comprises three matches a day on each of the three days. Run from 25 to 27 July this year, the players experi-enced unusually fine weather right in the middle of winter and were treated to perfect greens which allowed for tough competitive matches.

The first round was an open draw, with the subsequent eight rounds being on a strength versus strength basis. Major sponsors this year were Mesco Engineer-ing and Aweh-Sport whose contribution towards the cash prizes for the winning teams was greatly appreciated.

A range of other product donations en-sured that there were good prizes with a total value of more than R30 000 to com-pete for both on and off the green, much to the delight of the entrants.

To quote one winner of the daily lucky draw as he received his prize of a beautiful trolley bag and shoe voucher, total value more than R4 000: “Not a bad return for a R10 investment!” Mossel Bay Bowls Club again lived up to its reputation as “the friendly club” by ensuring that the entrants were kept enter-tained and well fed throughout the tournament. Every day players were treated to a welcoming cup of coffee with home-baked rusks to start the day; tea and designer sandwiches after the first match; scrumptious hot lunch after the second match; and to top it off, a 5-star dinner.

All in all a devastating combination for anyone on a stringent diet! A major tour-nament such as this requires excellent planning, solid team work, dependable (and transparent) scoring systems, well-maintained greens and supportive sponsors.

Convenor Hennie Coetzer and his team

All pics: On the left, Owen Calverley. President of Mossel Bay Bowling Club, and on

the right, Fritz Louw founder of the original Mossel Bay Classic Tournament.

pulled out all the stops this year, present-ing visiting players with a well-run, slick and enjoyable tournament – a good example of how a Classic should be run. Previously a men-only event, 2019 saw the tournament being redesigned as an “open” event, comprising teams of any combi-nation of men and ladies. This welcome change was widely applauded by both the male and female bowlers, as wives could now also participate in the tournament.

An extract from the president’s welcome message to the teams: “Hierdie jaar is bes-lis 'n mylpaal vir die Mosselbaai Classic. On day three the leader board is split into two sections, with the top half continuing on to compete for the cup, while the lower half compete for the plate. This allows for fierce competition right up until the last end of the last game as a last minute desperate draw shot can suddenly cause an unexpected upset. As the saying goes: “It ain’t over until the last bowl stops!”

The club was honoured this year to have the original tournament founder Fritz Louw present to hand over the prizes after the tournament.

The club president wishes to thank the following sponsors for their support with prizes: Tyremart, Stars Restaurant, ATKV, Mosselbaai Apteek, M de Wet Promosies,

RNA, Drakes Pride, Aero Bowls, Pro Bowls and Henselite. A special and final thank you to al l club members and employees who worked hard for months to prepare for this fantastic event. Well done to all of you!

NEWSFROM OUTENIQUA“Outeniqua has had a very busy quar-ter. We started off with our new fund raiser – the Durban July Frog Racing – an iniative by Lourens Roos which was a great success. Club members made the most delicious Beef and Chicken Potjie.

“We then held a fund raiser for our Under 30 Club members who will be representing Eden at the Under 30 tournament. This was in the form of a Music festival – Tribute to the Stars where Michael Lindt, Janine Fourie, Hanna Lee Khoury and Anton Bouwer performed. What a great evening of music and great steak. “Outeniqua has done some improve-ments at the Club for the comfort of the members and visitors. We have extended the roof on the stoep to give us more under roof seating, added 18 x 8 benches - made by the Club mem-bers and are in the process of adding new seating with usb ports for specta-tors to charge their phones while en-joying bowls along the greens. All this was done to cater for the 3rd green and to have enough seating for fundraisers and business leagues. “Outeniqua is also in the process of investigating the viability of a 6 rink indoor bowling rink. At this stage it looks very promising.”

Spring is just around the corner and many of our members, who are away on holiday escaping the winter chills, will soon be returning, to fill our Greens again!

“ Prof Stadler.

What is Z Squad exactly? The idea is to create a pool of seriously competi-tive and skilled players in each district from which the national selectors can invite players to national camps to be considered for the national squad. The goals, in Bowls South Africa’s own words:

To develop voluntary and iden-tify (NOT SELECTED) players with potential, who COMMIT to regular participation of a coherent National programme as a feeder for National Squads.

CLEARING UP Z SQUAD CONFUSION Provide an accessible long term player development programme (LTPD) for talented, committed players – a pathway to reach their potential. For data to be maintained in annual cycles running from 1 June to 31 May. The programme is administered by the National Standing Committee for Coach-ing (NSCC) on behalf of the National Academy (NA).

Who may participate in Z Squad?Any player in pursuit of high-performance goals must be part of this programme.

ONLY players on the Nationally collated list will be considered by the National Selectors, as their STARTING POINT of data-analysis for selection purposes.

The oldest bowling club in the world still operating is the Southampton Old Bowling Green right by the docks in England. The Hospital of "God's House" was founded in 1185 for pilgrims

who were going either to the shrine of St Swithun at Winchester or to Canterbury; until 2011, the gateway housed the museum of archaeology.

The green adjoining the God's House Hospital had been established during the reign of Richard I the Lionheart for the recreational use of the Warden, and was first used for a game of bowls in 1299. The club that plays there now is believed to have been established in the

17th century because of the history of a competition known as the "Knighthood. It is the only club known that has a "Master" in charge, a title carried forward from the earliest of days.
