Welcome to the TriBranch Symposium 2018 Roll with the Tides: Adapting to Change

Welcome to the 2018 TriBranch Symposium hosted this year by the NJ AALAS Branch with help from DVB and Metro NY AALAS Branches. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes for many months before the meeting - so we would like to

take a minute to thank all those who have donated their time to make this meeting a success. We are changing things a bit for this year’s meeting. Presentations will be Monday and Tuesday. There will be

two social events, one Monday evening sponsored by our Vendors and another one Tuesday evening highlighting the Poster awards, ScanVenger Hunt winners and Silent Auction. Then we will end the meeting offering AALAS certification exams on Wednesday. You will find more information throughout the Preliminary Program regarding the AREA program, our new ScanVenger hunt, Silent Auction, and lots more. For complete current information – please visit our website: www.tribranch.org Another big change this year is one registration fee reduced to $50 regardless of your organizational role and

how long you plan on attending. Please join us as we “Roll with the Tides” in the ever changing world of Laboratory Animal Science.

Ann Tourigny Turner, PhD, FASAE, CAE, Executive Director AALAS and the AALAS Foundation will present Monday June 11 - “Ready for More”

Jennifer C. Smith, DVM, DACLAM, Director, Bioresources Department at Henry Ford Health System and 2018 AALAS President, will present Monday, June 11 “Motivational Management in the Laboratory Animal Industry ” and Tuesday, June 12 - “General Anesthesia/Analgesia in the Lab Animal Industry- Trends, Best Practices from Human Medicine”

Keynote Speaker - Greg Vicino Associate Curator of Animal Welfare and Elephants San Diego Zoo Global

From Prevention of Cruelty to Optimizing Welfare: Opportunities to Thrive

Historically, animal welfare was evaluated in terms of negative states (e.g., hunger or thirst) as evidenced by the five freedoms. As the field continues to expand in both technique (e.g., technological advances, multimodal assessment tools, etc.) and understanding, many of the traditional frameworks no longer provide the detail and direction to take full advantage of our shared knowledge. As we shift our methods to examine positive states of welfare (e.g., behavioral diversity) in addition to negative measures we also find that our focus must be detailed enough to account for the interplay between the two. If we are to consider an animal’s welfare on a continuum from poor to thriving, we are pressed to develop a lens with which we can assess opportunities for animals (inputs) and evaluate the subsequent impacts (outcomes). The concept of assessing welfare framed by providing animals with ‘opportunities to thrive’ allows us to adapt to the changing needs of animals within a specific context.

2018 ScanVenger Fun Fair

2018 Animal Research Education & Awareness (AREA) Program

We are happy to announce the 2018 AREA program at TriBranch!

This program introduces the fields of laboratory animal science and biomedical research to students and their teachers. It has been made possible by support from the 2018 TriBranch Committee, Delaware Valley AALAS, New Jersey Branch AALAS, the Metro New York AALAS, NJABR, PSBR, AMP and participating exhibitors. Special thanks to the AALAS Foundation for providing guidance and materials needed to bring this program to TriBranch and to Pfizer for a grant supporting part of this program.

Students will be exploring the Exhibit Hall during the afternoon of Tuesday, June 12, 2018. We are soliciting volunteer support to mentor and chaperone our visiting students during the ScanVenger Hunt activity in the Exhibit Hall.

Please consider sponsoring the AREA program in 2018! More information about this program and how to participate can be found at http:// psbr.org/programs-18/area-program

The Jon Githens Memorial Golf Outing

Monday Roundtable, Workshop, and Review Session

Please join us for the following Monday Morning Sessions: 1. Enrichment “Roundtable” – (10:00-11:30 AM) This will be a casual and open discussion on various enrichment topics - including but not limited to:

Aquatic environmental enrichmentSocial housing of instrumented species

Post op enrichment for rodentsEnrichment for exotic species

Novel ideas for enrichment

The session will also be a venue for sharing success stories as well as failures.

Facilitators: Mikele Simkins, Crystal Johnson This session is open to all attendees and is relevant to everyone who works in a vivarium!

2. Due Diligence Auditing Workshop – (10:00 – 12:00 noon)

$25 - lunch included & pre-registration required

Due Diligence Auditing is a critical process in ensuring animal welfare at institutions conducting 3rd party studies, as well as the quality of animal models and materials supplied by vendors servicing the Laboratory Animal Community. This 2 hour workshop, which will be a forum for sharing of best practices and approaches for audit/compliance programs, covers key aspects of conducting due diligence audits at such facilities. This session is geared towards Laboratory Animal Industry staff at all levels who may participate in the auditing process.

Topics include:Pre-Audit Preparation

Audit Conduct & Follow-up Auditing Scenarios - What Would You Do?

This highly interactive session will provide mock scenarios and walk the audience through an audit. Be ready to participate!

3. AALAS Certification Exam Review – (10:00 – 12:00 noon) pre-registration required

There will be an AALAS Certification Review for the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician and the Laboratory Animal Technician exams on Monday from 10 am - 12 pm. Pre-registration is required for the exam. You must register with National AALAS by May 4 to be able to take the exam at TriBranch. the exam will be given on Wednesday following the TriBranch meeting.
