True Christian Christmas

Christmas isn't showy gifts Or glittering decoration;

It's honoring our Savior, Jesus Christ In humble adoration.

It's serving those less fortunate, Meeting their needs before our own; It's making sure at Christmas time

That no one is alone.

It's taking what we would have spent On things that no one needs, And using it to help someone With service and good deeds.

Our Savior showed us how to live With charity, faith, and service.

It makes the holidays a joy, More peaceful, and less nervous.

So let's remember Christmas is About our Savior's birth;

That's the way to happiness, The way to peace on earth.

You have your elf on the shelf, but where will you put Jesus this year?

Christian Version of the Elf on the Shelf

Purchase an inexpensive manger set with Mary,

Joseph, Baby Jesus, and a manger.

On December 1st, read the Christmas Story about the

birth of Jesus.

Setup your manger under the Christmas tree, but wait

until December 25 before you put baby Jesus in the

manger.

Over the next 25 days, Mary and Joseph travel

throughout the house. Children or parents can take

turns moving Mary and Joseph. This is where you get

creative. When you “hide” Mary and Joseph, you can

add scripture quotes, random acts of kindness, or

Christmas books about Jesus. Make it fun for you and

your children.

Each day Mary and Joseph can get closer to the

manger, and on Christmas morning they would arrive

under the tree and Baby Jesus will be born (this is

when you place Jesus in the manger.)

Is this now just the Ghost of Christmas Past? How did we get from there to here? How did we go from that warm feeling about Christmas and knowing that we were celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, to the secular frenzy we have today? Don’t blame the non-believers. Instead, I think those of us who believe in the divinity of Jesus need to examine our own consciences.

If you are a Christian who celebrates Christmas, ask yourself these questions.

1) In decorating your home for Christmas, is the Christ Child and manger scene a focal point in your home, both inside and outside? Are there as many decorations depicting the Holy Family, Angels and the Wiseman as there are snowmen, Santas, and reindeer?

2) When selecting Christmas cards, do you pick only cards with Mary and the Christ Child or do snowmen, Santa and skating penguins top your list? Oh, by the way, let’s not use the excuse “But I have some friends who are Jewish or don’t celebrate Christmas.” I do too, and for those folks I buy a handful of separate Happy Hanukkah cards for my Jewish friends, and for non-believers, a Happy New Year’s card. The point is, I don’t subtract the Christ Child from the equation!

3) Do you only say Merry Christmas or do you give in and find yourself spouting the politically correct “Happy Holidays”?

4) When purchasing stamps for mailing my Christmas cards I only buy the Madonna and Child. In fact, I buy extra to use throughout the year. What about you?

5) Wrapping paper for gifts: Here, too, no Season’s Greetings or Happy Holidays on my wrapping paper. Yours?

The commercialization of Christmas is the fault of us Christians. We buy the secular cards, wrapping paper, and other trappings. If we only purchased the items that are Christ-centered, then that would be what the com-panies would produce. For them it is all about profit.

Here’s an example: One year I was selecting a Christmas card for our ministry from a large printing compa-ny’s book. Usually I place an order for a large number of Christmas cards. One year I noticed that there were only two styles that featured the Madonna and Child, both of which I had already used in previous years.

I didn’t place an order with that company that year and I told them why.

Don’t you know the following year they contacted me with their new catalog and were proud to tell me they have a larger selection of religious cards then ever before. So you see, we have power in our purchasing, if we do it wisely.

In order to “Keep Christ in Christmas” and make sure people know that “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” we have to set the example.

People of all religions are proud of their holidays and happy to share their special meaning with those of other faiths. It’s time for Christians to stop apologizing for Christmas.

St. Malachy and Precious Blood Church Reminder

With the holiday season upon us, our thoughts are turning to helping needy children and families. The spiritual formation of our students includes helping others less fortunate. In the past, we have adopted very poor families from various inner city parishes. Every year, Father Matt has been overwhelmed by the generosity of our children and families. If you would like to participate, we have a “giving tree” for the needy families. On Monday, November 19, two trees were set up, one in the elementary building (atrium) and one in the junior high building (atrium.) The trees will bear ornaments that will list items that our adopted families are in need of. Parents may choose one or as many ornaments as you would like to purchase. Wrap the item Securely attach the ornament to the wrapped gift Place the gift underneath the tree in the primary building or the junior high

building If you prefer not to shop, we will gladly accept any monetary gifts to purchase food gift certificates. Please put the check in an envelope marked Father Matt (St. Malachy and Precious Blood Church) and send it to the main office.

(Please make checks payable to NEA.) Return by Monday, December 10, 2018.

Noonan Elementary Academy Emergency School Closing Information

In an effort to make notification of an emergency school closing as efficient and quick as possible, Noonan Elementary Academy has adopted an automatic calling system. In case of a school closing, our “phone blast” will start and all of our families will be called simultaneously. In addition to the phone blast, you may also check the following: 1. Listen to WGN radio (AM – 720) or WBBM radio (AM – 780) between 6:30

and 8:00 A.M. or watch CBS ch. 2, NBC ch. 5, ABC ch. 7, FOX ch. 32, or cable for closing infor-mation.

2. Go to the public website at www.emergencyclosings.com and search for the facility by typing the name and city of the facility.

3. Check the internet for your local news and school closings. 4. You can get a free e-mail notification (sent to your computer) simply by signing up for the service

on the ECC website (www.EmergencyClosings.com). If you no longer want to receive the e-mail notification you can simply remove your name from the ECC website. ECC pays for this “free” service by selling advertising on the e-mail message, but they do not sell the list of e-mail sub-scribers.

December Saints

December 21st We celebrate the feast of St. Peter Cansius. He was one of the most important figures in the Catholic Reformation in Germany and has often been called the “second apostle of Germany”. At the age of 19 he received a master’s degree from the university at Cologne and soon after-wards he joined the recently formed Society of Jesus. He taught, preached, edited books, and worked to support the Catholic press and printers in many cities.

December 22nd We celebrate the feast of St. Flavian. His wife and two daughters were all saints who were martyred for their faith. Flavian was branded on the forehead as a slave and sent into exile where he was tortured. He collapsed and died while in prayer.

December 23rd We celebrate the feast of St. John Kanty. He was a kind, humble and generous man who suf-fered opposition and led a rigorous, penitential life. He was known to all the poor of Kraków, Poland for his kindness. He kept only the money and clothes absolutely needed to support him-self.

December 24th We celebrate St. Adam and St. Eve (First Age of the World.) As we have said elsewhere, Adam and Eve are not called saints in ordinary reference, historical or scriptural. But they may be called saints on their feast day which is the vigil of Christmas, because we know from sound Catholic tradition that they repented of their great sin, lived lives of holiness and are now in Heaven.

December 25th The Nativity of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (1A.D.) On December 25, five thousand, one hundred and ninety-nine years after the creation of the world, in a little stable in the town of Bethlehem, took place the birth of all births in the history of the world.

How (and Why) to Return to Confession The Register’s pass-on guides for AdventShare

December 6-12, 2009 Issue | Posted 11/27/09

Peace Of Mind “Peace on earth!” announce the angels at Christmas. But how and where do we find that peace? Simple: con-fession. People sometimes wrongly think of confession as a place of judgment and guilt. We have good news: It’s a place of healing and peace. The Register challenges each reader this Advent to go to confession and recommend it to at least one other person. The guide provided here can help. After all, as Pope Benedict XVI said: “The renewal of the Church in America and throughout the world depends on the renewal of the sacrament of penance.”

The presence of sin can easily lead to depression and anxiety. You shower to show respect for those around you. Cleansing your soul makes you better to be around, too! Mortal sin, un-confessed, “causes exclusion from Christ’s Kingdom and the eternal death of hell, for our

freedom has the power to make choices forever, with no turning back” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1861).

As they leave the confessional, people smile a smile of freedom. Because love means having to say you are sorry to the one you love. You will grow in humility, sincerity, and self-knowledge. Blessed Mother Teresa went frequently. Hoping to convert on your deathbed? That’s not very likely. Most likely, you will die as you lived. It is itself a serious sin to go to Communion if you have serious sin on your soul and have not asked for

forgiveness in confession. Don’t be scared to death of confession. Be scared of death without confession. Be strong. Face your sins; deal with them and move on. Make sure there are no unpleasant surprises at your particular judgment or at the Final Judgment. The priest will listen to your sins and will never tell a soul on pain of losing his soul. Priests even learn to

forget what they hear. Step 1 Examine your conscience … using the Ten Commandments or an available guide. Step 2 You have the choice of facing the priest (if he offers the option) or speaking through a screen. Step 3 There are no special words you need to say. Greet the priest, and tell him how long it has been since your last confession. If it’s been awhile, he’ll help you. Step 4 Be concise, clear, complete and contrite. You have to confess mortal sins and give a sense of how often. Don’t be embarrassed. You’re not going to tell the priest anything he hasn’t already heard. Step 5 The priest won’t scold you. In fact, if you’ve had a tough confession, he’ll show you extra care. Your penance won’t be harsh. Step 6 Then you’ll make an act of contrition. Look in a prayer book for a longer one, or simply say: “Jesus, I am truly sorry for my sins and, with your grace, I will try to sin no more.”

Page 13: True Christian Christmas€¦ · When you “hide” Mary and Joseph, you can add scripture quotes, random acts of kindness, or Christmas books about Jesus. Make it fun for you and

NOONAN ACADEMY Page 13

Step 7 Do your penance right away, before leaving the church, if possible. Step 8 Christ has forgiven and forgotten your sins, and the angels and saints are having a party to celebrate. Confession Definition “For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: ‘Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1857). Grave Matter What constitutes “grave matter”? Some common sins, according to the bishops: missing Sunday Mass, sex outside marriage (including pornography and masturbation), serious theft, abortion, defamation of character and purposely getting drunk. Concerns & Answers Can’t I talk to God directly, not a priest, to get forgiveness? Not according to the Bible. Read John 20:21-23; 2 Corinthians 2:10; and 2 Corinthians 5:18. If God knows everything we do, then how come we have to go to confession? You may know your friend broke your iPod, but wouldn’t it be aggravating if he knew you knew, but still didn’t say, “I’m sorry”? Doesn’t God forgive no matter what? If we think of sin as merely breaking rules, it is hard to understand why God can’t just “look the other way.” But sin is real; it hurts us and makes us distant from him — and unable to enter heaven. We can only be re-stored if we confess. Confession just gives people the idea that it’s all right to sin as long as you’re sorry later. If a man is confessing drunkenness while he has plans with his buddies to go barhopping and get drunk again the coming weekend, he can’t be forgiven. He has to have decided to stop. Confession stops sins; it doesn’t start them.

The Act of Contrition

"O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of Heaven, and the pains of Hell; but most of all, because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to

do penance, and to amend my life. Amen." After Confession Give thanks to God for forgiving you again. If you recall some serious sin you forgot to tell, rest assured that it has been forgiven with the others, but be sure to confess it in your next Confession. Do your assigned Penance. Resolve to return to the Sacrament of Reconciliation often. We Catholics are fortunate to have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is the ordinary way for us to have our sins forgiven. This sacrament is a powerful help to get rid of our weaknesses, grow in holiness, and lead a balanced and virtuous life.

The Path to Excellence - IESA Speech Competition

On Friday, November 2nd, Liberty School in New Lenox hosted the annual IESA sponsored Speech Competition. Here one hundred and eighty schools split into groups across Illinois and had the wonderful opportunity to showcase their students’ communicative skills while competing in seven different categories: Original Script, Poetry, Regular Duet Acting, Small Group Acting, Solo Acting, and Team Improve.

Noonan Academy was proud to send ninety students to represent our pro-

gram. There were 5 Individual Monologues, 22 Small Groups, 7 Duet, and 1 Im-promptu. Twenty-nine events received 1st place, 5 events received 2nd place, and two events received 3rd place. The highest award that can be received by any group is a Judges Choice award; Noonan received 7 of these awards. As always, the students had a wonderful time while competing at the highest level. Noonan Academy has a professional speech and drama program which fosters in all its par-ticipants, life skills that will pave the path of excellence throughout a student’s life-time.

Like all the arts, speech focuses on communication while responding to oth-

ers in a creative forum. These life skills are practiced repeatedly until they become part of the student’s skill set that will be used in today’s increasingly information-centered world. At Noonan, we are creating dynamic leaders of tomorrow who will have the ability to communicate effectively. As a principal, I believe the greatest gift that we can give students is the confidence to participate in activities that surround their lives. Over 65 percent of the Noonan students participated in speech. Our Noonan leaders are participating in their path of excellence.

All hearts come home for

Christmas

The Kneeling Santa Prayer

The sleigh was all packed, the reindeer were fed, But Santa still knelt by the side of his bed, "Dear Father, " he prayed, "Be with me tonight. There's much work to do and my schedule is tight. My sack will hold toys to grant all kids' wishes. The supply will be endless like the loaves and the fishes. I can do all these things, Lord, only through You. I just need your blessing, then it's easy to do. I do this only to honor the birth of the One, That was sent to redeem us, Your most Holy Son. So to all of my friends, lest Your glory I rob, Please, Lord, remind them who gave me this job."

On Wednesday, November 14th, our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students participated in an Oratory Contest.

The students focused on poetry, storytelling, and improvisation.

Experiences like this are very

important in the overall development of poise and confidence when speaking before an audience.

It’s difficult to be a leader in any field without this confidence.
