TERM 4 EVENTS We have some exciting events coming up and I hope you will join us. 10 October: College Assembly for School Leader

Nominees (Parents are welcome to attend) 17 October: Performing Arts Evening 19 October: Newman Symposium (Please RSVP for

catering purposes) Invitations are included in this newsletter. MERCY DAY On Wednesday 20 September the OLMC Community celebrated Mercy Day; a day in which the school remem-bers the great works of Mercy begun by Catherine McAuley, taken forward by the Sisters of Mercy and con-tinued here at OLMC. We began the day with Mass at St Aloysius Church. We thank our celebrant Fr Tom Carroll. Fr Tom conveyed the importance and meaning of Mercy in his homily. Mercy is prayer in action - Fr Tom said that Mercy is experienced through human beings; our encounter with one another. With this comes the im-portance of OLMC maintaining its con-nection with the Sis-ters of Mercy. As peo-ple of Mercy, we must be prepared to offer ourselves to others in the spirit of Catherine McAuley. Mercy be-gins with me but can only be true when it ends with others. We must offer our talents, skills and service to those we encounter. We thank our special guests: Sr Leonie Martin rsm, Sr Chanel James rsm, Sr Carmelita Kassar rsm, Sr Cathe-rine Harris rsm, Sr Patricia Bolster, Mrs Sue Clay Princi-pal St Francis De Sales Primary School and Student Leaders, Ms Elizabeth Ovens Principal St Aloysius Prima-ry School and Student Leaders, Mrs Kate Dench and Stu-dent Leaders - Monte Sant Angelo, Ms Lisa James and Mrs Michelle Wheeler—Our Lady of Fatima Primary School and Student Leaders and Ms Anne Ferguson.

Pupil Free Day Monday 9 October is a pupil free day. Our Staff Professional Development day, which includes training in Mind Matters and Anaphylaxis, will focus on the care of our students, If you require supervision for your daughter, please contact the College office on 9544 1966. Term 4 All students will resume school on Tuesday 10 October in full summer uniform. Attendance As we are moving toward the end of Term 3, the attendance rates for students are being reviewed. For some stu-dents there has been contact with home to ensure that rates of attendance improve. The more often a student is in the classroom the more they will be learning. If a student is absent a note needs to be sent the next day that the student returns to school. Lateness Some students have been arriving at school late (after Period 1 has begun 8.40am). Students who arrive late to school are required to sign in at Student Services. The expectation is that if a student is late they bring a signed note from a parent / guardian. An unexplained start to the day will incur a lunchtime detention. Students are en-couraged to arrive at school at 8.30am to avoid being late to class. Procedure if child is unwell at school If students are feeling unwell at school they are to report to Student Services and if needed the office staff will make contact with home. Students are not to text or phone their parents directly. The College office needs to know where students are and monitor their wellbeing. Uniform Wearing the correct school uniform provides students with many benefits. The main advantage is that It not only promotes a better learning environment but also instils a sense of school pride and positive values in the girls. By wearing the College uniform correctly, students are demonstrating that they are an integral part of the community. Please ensure that your daughter wears the summer uniform correctly.

Uniform requirements are outlined on page 19 of the Student Diary. Many students have grown over the winter months and require their summer uniform hem to be let down. Please support the College by organising this over the holidays. Uniform length should be at the knee, please check your daughter’s uniform length. In cold weather, the College blazer is the outer garment for the summer uniform. The red jumper may be worn under the blazer. Wishing you and your family a restful holiday.

Newman Symposium OLMC’s commitment to the Newman Selective Gifted Program is to provide the opportunity to showcase the work of the students in the Newman classes. Now in its third year, students in the program in Years 7, 8 and 9 have been preparing for a symposium of their work to be presented on Thursday, 19 Octo-ber. Parents of Newman students are asked to sup-port their daughters during their presentations, and the College community is warmly invited to attend. Sydney Catholic Schools that are part of the Newman Program can choose the format for the showcase they present. It has been the College’s plan, in supporting our College Vision and Mission, to promote 21st Cen-tury skills. Thus, Year 7 students demonstrate Com-munication, Year 8 students add to this and partici-pate in Collaboration, and Year 9 students add to these two skills and combine them with Critical Think-ing. Their symposium presentations are as follows: Year 7 Reverse Parent-Teacher Interviews Students have been working to synthesise the learn-ing they have experienced over the course of this year. This is encapsulated in a presentation using an online medium of their choice to be shown to their parents or carers. The students have used work sam-ples such as documents, presentations, photographs and recordings of their projects as well as the feed-back that has been provided to them by their teach-ers. This demonstrates the knowledge and skills they have acquired from being a member of the Newman class for this year. Year 8 Master Classes Each Key Learning Area in the College runs a Newman class. Focusing on at least one of these, groups of students will teach their audience in a particular sub-ject area. Audience members may be asked to an-swer questions based on their lesson, or participate in the planned activities to demonstrate their under-standing or test a hypothesis. The planned classes are as follows: 1. Visual arts exhibition - View the products from our

talented students and learn about the techniques, media and inspiration behind each artwork

2. The physics of travel - Students will design a mechanism to propel a small car. These will be raced to test the hypothesis stated at the begin-ning of their lesson

3. The symbolic meaning of stained glass imagery - Combining the learning in Religious Education, Visual Art and HSIE students will share their learn-

Page 9

ing with their audience in a practical and hands-on way

4. Kitchen Garden - Students will present their findings from kitchen garden planning in Technology to exe-cute an effective crop for harvest

5. French cheeses - Find out the difference between the different cheeses that are produced, their histo-ry, their providence and why they taste the way they do

6. Gender stereotypes - What stereotypes exist in our society and flip these beliefs using images from the text, Piggybook. A debate will be initiated with the statement, ‘Why disrupting the status quo can be a good thing’.

7. How fit are you really? - Using heart rate and an es-tablished hypothesis, students will aim to demon-strate the fitness levels of audience participants mathematically and scientifically. Skipping ropes supplied!

Year 9 OLMC Talks (TED Talks Style) To demonstrate their ability to think critically about a topic they are passionate about, Year 9 students will speak for five minutes in small groups about their learn-ings and observations on a variety of areas. These have been initiated by them and seek to extend the depth of their knowledge around a question they wish to answer for themselves. Find out what they have discov-ered. The topics include:

1.A day in the life of a Newman student 2.The power of the mind: Mind over matter 3.How has women’s fashion changed our world? 4.Stress and how to deal with it 5.The philosophy of Harry Potter 6.Labels 7.Conspiracy theory 8.Brain games 9.Is your blue my green? 10.Gender equality 11.WhAt is the effect of praise and encouragement on sporting performance?
