o, here we are at the end of summer and 3 of the
main events were completed under sunny skies.
Lady Luck was on our side again!
The Races have been run, the bulls and horses bucked
out, and the Fair saw thousands of entries and visitors
for another record event! Well done! Once again, the
organization by the committees and the efforts by the
hundreds of volunteers have contributed to a successful
summer season. Thanks to all for your continuing hard
work. To see the smiling faces at each of the events is
the reward for the endless hours spent in meetings. If
there are any folks out there who would like to
volunteer, please call the office at 403-931-3411. New
ideas and new faces are always welcome at the
Racetrack.
The Farmers’ Market is going strong with planning and
organizing underway for the 3-day Christmas Market
on November 11th – 13th.

hile a few hundred spectators
surrounding the Stampede Stage waited
with bated breath, a surprised June
Danforth, matriarch of a local farm family, tried to
digest a phone call from MRAS President John Dakers
telling her she held the winning ticket in the 104th
Annual Priddis & Millarville Fair's inventive Reggie
The Rooster Raffle.
Her husband Owen had bought the ticket in hopes of surprising her (successful) and, as you might imagine, getting a call telling you that an eight foot tall, 400 lb rooster was right at your fingertips might have been a little startling. A loud cheer erupted when Mrs. Danforth, after a short "family conference" while Mr. Dakers and the crowd waited, decided to take Reggie, one of three options she could have selected, as her prize . . . . . and Reggie was indeed delivered to their farm soon thereafter.
The fun surrounding the Reggie The Rooster Raffle was emblematic of another terrific Fair year, with crowds comparable to the miracle of 2010 and smiles throughout . . . . . and, we hear, a report of "zero complaints" appears to have been factually true.
The Priddis & Millarville Fair is the only such Fair to be fully funded by its surrounding community, says Donna Kendall, Fair Chairman.
"It is our sponsors who made it possible to make our Fair not only financially viable but also a great contributor to the Society as a whole," she said, noting sponsorship dollars this year were higher than 2010. "Our sponsors funded the best prize pool ever, the overhead costs like signs and judges, the decorations, and the extras. They made it possible to feed and water over 300 volunteers on Friday night
W
set up and then again on Saturday. It was the community's belief in the Fair - both through individuals and businesses - that caused this great Fair to happen."
And, of course, Donna offered up thanks to the more than 300 volunteers, many of them Society members and some 26 as life members, who put in thousands of hours of time to give back to their community and its traditions.
Hundreds of prized Fair ribbons were awarded among the thousands of bench entries and competitions (rooster crowing, look-a-like dogs and horses) while ample fun was provided in the crowded Kids World area, the petting zoo, the parade, churning out ice cream via Nelly & Shelly. The integration of the Fair with the Millarville Farmers' Market continues to be a masterful stroke and greatly appreciated by visitors to both. Donna invited the public to join the fun by helping come up with ideas for next year's crazy raffle. "We're finding these raffles, like Millie the Massey and then.
Reggie The Rooster, are a lot of fun for the community, attention-grabbing with media and they do help us raise a good deal of money to keep the Fair healthy and vibrant. As you can imagine, after Millie and now Reggie, we'll need raffle ideas that are fairly crazy, off-beat but agriculture-related." If you've got a fun idea for the Fair raffle next year, let the MRAS office know at 403-931-3411.
our-year-old Gabriel Anderson dictated this story verbatim and in one fell swoop to his mother for "Reggie's Long-Journey Home" Essay & Art Contest . . . . Where entries had to answer what Reggie had been doing in between his first Fair in 1907 and the 2011 one that he was returning to.
"Reggie is not a real rooster, except for at Christmas. He was made by someone who makes things from wood . . . a carpenter. Teachers asked him to make Reggie a long time ago for the people. The people wanted to see Reggie.
"Reggie lives in a barn with lots and lots and lots of doors. It is really, really tall. There is even an elevator that has no buttons. It is an automatic elevator. The teachers and the people can use it if they want to see Reggie. He could not leave though because of his paint. The paint comes off in the rain. Reggie will be at the Fair this year because he now has special sticky paint. It will not come off in the rain."

he Millarville Farmers’ Market time change has been a success! The change to
staying open until 2:00 pm has eased the traffic pressure at the gate, slowed the
frenzy for vendors from 10-12 and has allowed visitors to relax and stay for lunch,
listen to the music, shop some more… not be in a hurry. Vendors have done well
stepping up to the challenge of having enough stock to last them until the end of
market. Be sure to thank your favourite vendors for being here. It’s a huge
commitment to be here on Saturdays and be ready to go week after week. Thank you
for your support of the market week after week.
The weather has been beautiful this summer apart from the torrential downpour on
opening day and all things fall are coming! Peaches and plums are in full swing from the fruit trucks, with apples and
pears soon to come. Have you tried lemon lime apples- they have a short early fall season and are super crunchy, juicy
– slightly tangy and something I look forward to
every year. Pickling cucumbers, corn, potatoes,
carrots, squash are all coming to their peak. It’s the
season for pickling, freezing, canning, making pies
and being a squirrel for winter. Ask your favourite
meat vendors about ordering a freezer pack for fall.
Plan to make our last Farmers’ Market for the
season, on Oct 8, part of your Thanksgiving tradition.
Pick up your turkey and everything for Thanksgiving
dinner. Bring your guests and enjoy the bounty of
food, art, and creativity that is Alberta.
See you at the Market!

he Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area is seeking proposals from persons
interested in conducting an exclusive winter/spring grazing program on lands
managed by the Conservation Area.
The Conservation Area's Board of Directors (the "Cross Board") supervises the management
of 4,800 acres of rolling foothills land donated by Ann and Sandy Cross. In addition to its
mandate of protecting natural habitat for native species, the area offers conservation education programs that foster awareness,
appreciation and action.
Recently, the Cross Board received a report on the physical development and stewardship of the lands comprising the Conservation
Area. The Cross Board is currently seeking proposals from persons interested in conducting a grazing program on the Conservation
Area. The grazing program will assist the Cross Board in managing weed control and reducing risk of wildfire, as well as facilitate the
improved health of the grasslands.
The design of the program, including the area to be grazed, herd size, the portion of the year when grazing occurs, term, capital
investment for building repair and fencing (both new and by way of repairs) should be in the proposal. A draft copy of the contract,
which will be revised to reflect the terms and conditions in the awarded proposal, is available by contacting the Ann & Sandy Cross
Conservation Area and the final contract will include the terms and conditions contained in the Proposal submitted by the successful
proponent.
Proposals will be evaluated and selected based upon the following criteria and weighting:
1. The Grazing Plan submitted 25% 2. Experience of the Proponent 25% 3. Proponent’s knowledge of grazing management 25% 4. Compensation offered 25%
Interested persons can receive additional information from, and access to the applicable lands for review/inspection can be arranged through, Reg Rempel by contacting 403-931-3111 or [email protected] Interested persons must submit their proposal by September 15, 2011. The Board of Directors of the Ann & Sandy Cross
Conservation Area reserves the right to accept or reject any proposal and its evaluation and decision shall be final.
Please contact either Reg Rempel or e-mail [email protected] PRIOR to submitting a proposal to receive the full Request
For Proposals with details on the items all proposals must address, including: area to be grazed, seasonality, term, grazing
management, animal management, cattle feeding, hazardous materials, insurance, and assignment.
Further information on the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area can be found at www.crossconservation.org

inead and Brittany ran another great summer reading
program with over thirty-five participants. There were a lot
of adults in every Wednesday too and we have had
wonderful feedback on our book collection. Our main book buyers, Judi and Barb, do an excellent job of purchasing the latest
best sellers and a great variety of novels to please everyone’s taste. If we don’t have the book, we can order it from one of the
other libraries in Marigold or from any library in Alberta. It usually takes a week or two and when it arrives we call you to let
you know it is here for pickup. If you have never been to our library, come for a visit and I am sure you will become a regular
patron.
Our regular hours resume on Tuesday, September 6th and we are open from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday and
Thursday, from 9:00 am – 8:00 pm on Wednesday, and from 9:00 am – noon on Friday. Our story times for preschoolers are
usually on the first Tuesday of the month, but check the library for exact dates.
The Fall edition of the Foothills Continuing Education Council calendar comes in the Western Wheel at the end of August. Be
sure to have a look at it and sign up for some great classes. Some of them start in September so be sure to register early so
that you are not disappointed. Millarville has some new classes and a lot of your old favourites. There will be a free Tai Chi
video conference on Thursday, September 8th from 7:30-8:30 pm in the library. If you like what you see, you can sign up for
the Tai Chi class which will be held at the Ranchers’ Hall on Thursday afternoons from 3:15 – 4:15. We will again have Yoga on
Wednesdays, Zumba on Tuesdays, Tums & Bums on Mondays, Adult Badminton on Tuesdays and Volleyball on Wednesdays.
At the end of September there is a willow furniture chair class, and in October we will have a drum making class and an
evening learning about Craniosacral Therapy, and a knitting class for making socks. Do you have a new e-reader and are not
sure what to do with it? On Monday, October 3rd from 3-5 pm we will have someone here from the Marigold Library System
to tell you how to purchase books or download them from the library. We will also be having a babysitting course for children
who will be turning twelve in the next year, or who have already had their twelfth birthday. It will be held on Friday afternoon
and all day Saturday, September 9th and 10th.
We are always looking for volunteers in the library. Most of our volunteers work a half day shift once a week or every other
week. We also need spares to fill in when someone is sick or away on holidays. Call the library at 403-931-3919 if you think
you would like to join our team.

he 106th running of the Millarville Races is now history and we want to thank everyone who helped make it all come
together. Our volunteers were tireless in their efforts before race day, on race day and afterward. We had to do a fast
tear-down because of the market the next morning, but the job got done.
Again, a big thank-you to all who helped in any capacity.
This is being written before our wrap-up meeting and at this time our financials are not yet complete but it appears we had a
very profitable day. We had a good crowd and even
Mother Nature smiled on us. If anyone is interested
in helping with the 107th races, watch for our notes
in future editions of the Track Watch and come out
to join us. We NEVER turn down extra help!

MMiillllaarrvviillllee RRooddeeoo –– WWhheerree CChhaammppiioonnss GGeett SSttaarrtteedd!! he 15th Annual Millarville Rodeo went off without a hitch this past
August 5th – 7th, with a major showing of rodeo fans, participants,
volunteers, campers and sponsors. The feel of the weekend was all
about the next generation of rodeo champions. The entries in the youth and
junior categories put on a great performance for the crowds, and we all look
forward to seeing these kids grow up to be the next champions in Canadian
Rodeo ranks.
The action packed weekend gave fans an up-close-and-personal experience,
which included some young local competitors getting ready to launch their
rodeo careers. 13-year-old Jillian Ranks of Millarville, took home the coveted
Local Junior Barrel Racing Buckle for her champion run around the barrels
Sunday afternoon. Jillian was followed closely by Payton Kaenel & Meghan
Rawn who came in with close times landing them in the 2nd & 3rd pay holes. In
the FCA Junior Barrels, Kelsey Jo Harbridge walked away in the top hole and is
on track to make the FCA finals this coming October in Red Deer. The Junior
Bull Riding winner Tristan Carlier was awarded a memorial buckle in memory
of the late Jordie Thompson, another local rodeo hero. In Boys Steer Riding
the number one spot was split between Kole Ashbacher & Tyrell Ward who
both scored 74 point rides.
The emphasis on youth being involved in Rodeo is continuing with rodeo
families passing on the tradition to their children through the generations.
Events like Mutton Bustin’ and Wild Pony Racing get kids involved in rodeo at
an early age, and start to foster the camaraderie, sportsmanship, and
willingness to help out one another from an early age. Parents also have the
chance to enroll their young cowboys and gals in programs like Future
Cowboys & Cowgirls, 4H Clubs, and Rodeo Schools.
Millarville, and the rest of the Diamond Valley, is known for raising top quality
rodeo competitors that span all areas of rodeo events. We’re a small piece of
rural Alberta, but we are rich in Rodeo heritage and hope to continue the
tradition of great cowboys and cowgirls for future generations.
