PPrreessiiddeenntt…… he 2012 AAAS Convention took place in Edmonton on the 3rd-5th of February. MRAS achieved success in the 2012

AAAS Marketing Competitions. Our Track Watch placed first in the Ag Society Newsletter category. The Rodeo poster placed first in the Event Related Poster and Flyer category. The Fair had two second place ribbons: one for “Poster More than 2 Colors” and one for “Fair Book Cover more than 2 Colors”. Congratulations to all those involved. You now have bragging rights and $250 in cash prizes.

When you start talking about the weather, it means you have run out of important things to say. My wife, Donna, was in Phoenix for a sewing show in January. With limited access to Alberta weather reports, she asked about the weather up here. I explained how I had suffered through record setting cold. Brutal! Would those of you who smile when she talks about the cold weather, please stop doing that. She is beginning to think I have not been truthful.

Spring cannot be far away. There is a major increase in planning activities being carried out by our event committees. I am getting excited listening to all the traditional and new activities being considered.

Threepoint Kitchen Café continues to offer Sunday Brunch from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The number of neighbors I meet each Sunday keeps growing. There is nothing like good food and good friends.

Come on out to the Racetrack and be prepared for a great time.

anuary was a busy month for 4-Hers. After the long holiday, it was back to work.

Our Winter Workshop this year was awesome! We stamped letters into leather

plates and cut them out to make nameplates for our horse stalls. Everyone was

a little tentative at first; scared they would hit their fingers with the hammer!

We punched small holes in the leather for the chain and gems and used a Chicago

screw to hold a leather 4-H clover in place. Besides the letters, there were also horseshoe and horse stamps for

decoration. Once we were done stamping, another table was available to paint the leather. We owe a big thank you to

Tom Adams, Martie Blatz’s great-grandfather, for supplying the leather and stamping tools. Also, thank you to Jackie

Rawn for organizing and Jeff Blatz and John Brogden for providing expertise.

The Calgary 4-H Region held the Winter Bonanza Camp at River’s Edge on Jan 27-29. This year, Juniors and

Intermediates were combined because of the low number of people signed up. However, when we got there, I found

out that there were more people than last year and two of us had to share a bed! Luckily they let us switch rooms to be

with friends so it wouldn’t be too awkward. As always, it was an amazing weekend with lots of games. I made plenty of

new friends. We had a ton of fun!

Public Speaking came too quickly as always, but we all did well. Our top finishers were Jackson Collard and Aimee

Michaelis for the juniors, Sasha Lewis and Julianne Uchytil for the intermediates, and Brittnie Moore and Nevada Rowe

for the seniors. Good luck to all six who will be representing our club at Area Public Speaking on Feb. 25th. Thank you to

Altalink for sponsoring our public speaking event and to Terry Allwarden, Marion Anton, Carlyle Cupid, Trudy Cutfield,

Elizabeth Davis and Paddy Mullaney for volunteering as judges.

On February 10th, we had our monthly meeting and listened to a talk about show preparation by Diane McKay and level

testing by our instructor, Cassandra Day. Willow McDonald performed a speech on Irish Dancing for us, because she had

been absent at Public Speaking. The next morning it was too cold for the first riding group to ride but the other groups

went ahead. We labeled parts of the horse’s body in preparation for level testing and were quizzed on horse colours and

markings before the actual riding lesson.

Up next are two clinics – a non-extreme cowboy trail clinic/competition with Steve Dunham and a goat-tying clinic with

Dusti Whiteside. Thanks again to SEARS for sponsoring our light horse program this year. Stay tuned for our next

o more warm, fuzzy language to talk about volunteers!

Volunteers are neither saints nor teddy bears. But you would

never know it from the kinds of language so many people use

to talk about them.

Back in November 2009, I got a mass email sent out from United Nations Volunteers to several thousand people that

illustrates this oh-so-well. It said, in part:

This is the time to recognize the hard work and achievements of volunteers everywhere who work selflessly for the

greater good. Selflessly?

And then there are those companies that sell items for organizations to give to their volunteers, with phrases like:

“Volunteers spread sunshine!” “Volunteers... hearts in bloom!” In a word - yuck.

Not all volunteers are selfless! Yes, I fully acknowledge that there are still some volunteers that like to be thanked with

pink balloons and fuzzy words - but could we at least acknowledge that there are many thousands of volunteers who do

not respond to this way of being recognized?

Volunteers are not all donating unpaid service to be nice, or to make a difference for a greater good of all humanity or

to be angels. Volunteers also donate unpaid service:

•to gain certain kinds of experience •for a sense of adventure •to gain skills and contacts for paid employment

•for fun •to meet people in the hopes of making friends (or even get dates) •to feel important

•because they are angry and want to see first hand what's going on at an organization or within a cause, or to

contribute to a cause they feel passionate about

•to change people's perceptions about a group (a religious minority in a community may volunteer to demonstrate to

the majority that they are a part of the community too, that they care about other people, etc.)

NONE of those reasons to volunteer are selfless. But all of them are excellent reasons to volunteer, nonetheless - and

excellent reasons for an organization to involve a volunteer. These not-so-selfless volunteers are not less committed,

less trustworthy or less worth celebrating than the supposed selfless volunteers.

Let's quit talking about volunteers with words like nice and selfless. Let's drop the fuzzy language and start using more

modern and appropriate language to talk about volunteers that recognizes their importance, like:

•Powerful •Intrepid •Audacious •Determined

•Qualified •Innovative •Revolutionary •Fastidious

Let's even call them mettlesome and confrontational and demanding. That's what makes volunteers necessary, not just

nice.

In short, let's give volunteers their due with the words we use to describe them.

A thirtieth birthday party/vendor reunion is in the

planning stages for this summer and it would be great to

oin us June 16, 2012 for the inaugural Millarville "Run To The Farmers'

Market" Half Marathon.

This is a beautiful, early summer, point-to-point, 21.1 km race starting at 7

a.m. at Oilfields Arena in Black Diamond, running through Turner Valley and

eventually using backcountry pavement to finish at the Millarville Farmers'

Market just as it opens for its 30th season.

Invite your friends and family to cheer you across the finish line, then join them in

sampling the great food, music and shopping at southern Alberta's largest and oldest

outdoor market.

Finishers will receive a unique clay-fired medal fashioned by one of our Farmers'

Market vendors as well as a wick t-shirt.

Not a runner? Not a problem. You can always be involved in this fabulous event as a volunteer. Just give us a couple of

hours of your time and enjoy a complimentary thank you buffet post-race at the Racetrack Hall and receive a volunteer

t-shirt as well.

Great tips for entering the Fair

Instead of just attending the Priddis & Millarville Fair, be a part of it by entering something in one of the many various categories.

This will be a hands-on class, covering entries in home cooking, horticulture and honey, with various people sharing their expertise and tips for pleasing the judges. If you raise bees, this class will definitely help you with your honey entries.

he Millarville & District Recreation Board is accepting applications for funding for non-profit organizations for the

coming year. Each year the board receives a grant from the Municipal District of Foothills No.31 and disperses the

funds to deserving groups.

If you would like to apply for a grant, please send a letter stating your request along with a budget for 2012 and a

financial statement from 2011, to Box 59 Millarville, AB T0L 1K0.

In previous years funding has been provided to groups such as the Millarville Sports Association, Millarville Community

Library, Millarville Community School, Oilfields High School, West End Band Program, various 4-H groups, and athletes

and dancers who compete at an international level.

The deadline for applications is March 1st. For further information please call Norma Dawson at 403-938-7832 during

the day. We are always looking for new community members to sit on our board. If you are interested please give

Norma a call.

i Everyone! Up to now we have had a pretty good

winter, the lack of snow to plow has been a little

easier on the fuel bill. That could change, as we

know it will. The wind has moved a few shingles around but

still nothing amounting to much. I'm in the middle of making

lists of projects and getting quotes to follow up for approval.

As most of you arena riders have seen, we have our water

wagon. I can now water the arena in about 10 minutes

including hook-up, not including grooming, finding the right

moisture balance has been a work in progress. I believe I

have found it! It’s been a great piece of equipment to have on site and I know there are a few other uses for it that we

haven't tried yet. The electric gates are up and running thanks to Gateworks for that, the opening and closing times are

still 7:00am -11:00pm respectively, with some other features such as emergency vehicle entry.

As everyone starts to get the horses ready for the competition season we should remember some of the rules of the

arena. There is a fairly large sign of rules on the exterior of the arena by the door where the horses come in, please

refresh yourselves with the guidelines. There is one I would like all to make sure that is a priority. If you have jumps or

barrels or poles set up and more riders come, please be aware their horses may not be accustomed to that kind of

activity. We need to make sure that we minimize the risk of an accident or conflict. In saying that, if your horse is a little

spooky others should know that or don't bring the horses in unless you know you can handle them.

This is my pitch for free things, I am looking a piece of 3/16 steel pipe about 30" diameter 10 ft. long, and also some old

hay wagons that are no longer needed. Please keep the MRAS in mind if you hear of anything. I would also ask that if

any of the teens are looking for a summer job please send your

resume, or come by and chat with me.

On a personal note Deb and I would like to thank everyone for their

support and condolences through Deb's mom (Grace Wood) sickness

and her passing. Special thanks to Laurie Rowe and Saddle Sores for

the meal they dropped off, also the Millarville Community Church,

Judy Friesen and Shannon McClinchey. There are so many more,

THANK-YOU. It’s the little things like that, that make this such an

incredible place to live. Grace's other children were so grateful and

touched by the out-pouring of support for the family. They went back

to their homes across Canada understanding why their Mom loved

this community so much.
