International be-ratings: Moody questions World Thoroughbred Rankings“Aussie sprinting legend Black Caviar has arrived in Britain ahead of hereagerly-awaited northern hemisphere debut at Royal Ascot, and beenplunged straight into a row over who is the world’s best horse. Congressional Committees Seek Drug Information “Members of twoCongressional committees investigating the drugging of racehorses havesent letters to racing regulators in 39 states seeking information on howtrainers with multiple drug violations are disciplined and how often certainperformance-enhancing treatments are used.” Walt Bogdanich, TheRail-The New York Times Horse Racing Blog

A veterinarian’s letter to the KHRC “The following is a letter veterinarianAndrew Roberts sent to all the members of the Kentucky Horse RacingCommission regarding the Lasix issue. I received an email copy from theKy HBPA. I have to agree with Dr. Roberts, including the part about thepublic-perception argument. To me, certain industry leaders are creatingthe public-perception problem by making it sound like the highlyregulated, effective and transparent Lasix program is somehow dopinghorses--instead of pointing out that racehorses compete under extremelyrigorous medication rules, I daresay the most rigorous in sports.” JennieRees, Louisville Courier-Journal Horse Racing Blog

As I reviewed Union Rags=s pedigree in some depthafter his victory in the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain ofYouth S. in February, this week I am taking theopportunity to point out some salient pedigree featuresconcerning several of the other horses who enjoyedstakes success last week. It=s a reminder of howquickly time passes that it is already 11 years since thetremendously accomplished Nureyev died. He no longerhas many major stallion sons in Europe or NorthAmerica, but two of them were in form last week.

The California-based Unusual Heat was back in thespotlight thanks to the admirable Acclamation, whorecorded his fifth Grade I success and his thirdconsecutive triumph in the Charles Whittingham H. Over in Europe, Peintre Celebre enjoyed a stakes doublethanks to Slight Advantage in Germany and theprogressive 3-year-old Xanadou in France. Cont. p5

(Pedigree Insights cont.) The Wildenstein family experimented with inbreedingto Nureyev quite some time ago and was principallyrewarded with Peintre Celebre=s high-class 1 1/2-milefilly Vallee Enchantee. She was inbred 2x3 to Nureyev, thanks to having a second dam by the former Walmacstalwart. Coincidentally, both of last week=s stakeswinners by Peintre Celebre are also inbred to Nureyev. The more interesting of the two is Xanadou, who isinbred 2x3. His speedy dam, Doohulla, is a daughter ofStravinsky, who staked a strong claim to beingNureyev=s fastest son with his victories in the G1 Nunthorpe S. and G1 July Cup. Daughters of Stravinsky have already produced twoGroup 1 winners and interestingly both of them--theexcellent Australian filly Mosheen and the top-class RipVan Winkle--were effective at up to 1 1/2 miles.Xanadou=s Group 3 win last week was over a mile, buthe won over 1 3/16 miles as a juvenile, so it seems thatStravinsky=s daughters aren=t going to proveone-dimensional speedsters as producers. Brilliant racehorses don=t always make brilliantstallions, but Frankel=s legions of admirers needn't haveany fears about their favorite, judging by the earlyresults achieved by Galileo=s first few stallion sons. Last week saw New Approach confirm his standingas a stallion of rare potential. Even though this Derbywinner shone over distances of a mile and a quarter anda mile and a half--as his pedigree suggested he would--he had three impressive 2-year-old winners over sixfurlongs last week. The most important of the three hasto be the unbeaten Dawn Approach, who provided hissire with his first stakes victory, but there was also alot to like about Tha'Ir and the filly Newfangled. Teofilo was another Galileo stallion with amuch-admired 2-year-old winner last week, withHavana Gold shaping like a potential group horse inwinning his debut at Newmarket. Teofilo--who, likeNew Approach, stands under the Darley banner--alreadyhas five stakes winners in his first crop, including fourat group level. Parish Hall, of course, won last year=sG1 Dewhurst S. and Light Heavy was recording histhird consecutive win when he took the G2Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. Two sons of Galileo which haven=t enjoyed thefirst-rate support given to New Approach and Teofiloare Heliostatic and Sixties Icon. Heliostatic, a Group 3middle-distance winner, had only 24 foals in his firstIrish crop, but they included Crius, winner of the G3 Sommerville Tattersall S. last fall. The royally bred Sixties Icon--the result of a matingbetween winners of the Derby and Oaks--was a Group 1 winner, but that Group 1 win came in the StLeger, a race widely considered a graveyard for itswinners= stallion prospects.

Sixties Icon covered 52 mares in his first season, at afee of ,6,000. He therefore seemed sure to face anuphill struggle, but he has been one of the stories ofthe British season. Far from needing time and distance, his progeny have come out ready for action (thankspartly to the no-nonsense approach of Mick Channon, atrainer who believes that racehorses are meant to race).Sixties Item has already notched up four winners andthree placed horses from his first nine runners, including Chilworth Icon, winner of the Woodcote S.over six furlongs, and the listed-placed Effie B. The next son of Galileo to have runners will beHeliostatic=s superior brother Soldier of Fortune, winnerof the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Coronation Cup. ThisFrench-based stallion has yearlings, whereas the highlytalented Rip Van Winkle has foals. I have to admit that there was a time when I haddoubts about Gone West=s prowess as a broodmaresire. It wasn=t until late 2004, when his daughtersalready had more than 500 foals of racing age, that thethen-20-year-old stallion became the broodmare sire ofa Group 1 winner. However, that particular Group 1winner was worth the wait, as he was none other thanMotivator, who went on to take the 2005 G1 Derby byfive lengths. I=m pleased to say that that proved a turning point inGone West=s career. Since then his daughters= total ofGroup 1 winners in the Northern Hemisphere hassoared to eight, thanks to Healthy Addiction, FrostGiant, Game Face, Awesome Feather, Brilliant Speed,Announce and Union Rags. Of course Gone West had every right to succeed inthis area. His sire Mr. Prospector enjoyed prolongedsuccess as a broodmare sire, racking up numerousNorth American championships, and Gone West=s ownbroodmare sire, Secretariat, was the championbroodmare sire of 1992. But who could have guessedthat arguably his most important successes as abroodmare sire would come in such demandingmile-and-a-half tests as the G1 Derby and the GI Belmont S.?Cont. p7

Ask European breeders to name Green Desert=s beststallion sons and they are likely to nominate OasisDream, Invincible Spirit and Cape Cross, but anotherstallion worthy of inclusion is Desert Style. When this well-bred horse retired to Corbally Stud inIreland in 1996, his modest fee reflected the fact thathe had won nothing more important than three Group 3events in Ireland. Although technically the best3-year-old sprinter in Europe in 1995, Desert Style wasrated no higher than 120, so he was no shoo-in forstallion success. Even so, he has built up an admirable record and hewas represented by his sixth individual Grade I winnerwhen the ex-French Desert Blanc narrowly came out ontop in the Woodford Reserve Manhattan H. DesertBlanc=s predecessors include such high-class performersas Bachir (winner of the G1 2000 Guineas in Franceand Ireland), Mandesha (a triple Group 1 winner inFrance) and Paco Boy (a winner of three of Europe=spremier races over seven furlongs or a mile). Now 20 years old, Desert Style is currently finishinghis fourth season at Haras du Hoguenet in France, acountry where four of his progeny have won at thehighest level. One of his daughters was responsible forFamily One, one of the fastest French 2-year-olds of2011, and Havana Gold, the promising Teofilo coltmentioned elsewhere in these notes, is another with aDesert Style dam.

Incidentally, Desert Blanc is an example of thesuccess that Indian Ridge mares have enjoyed withgrandsons of Danzig, others being Dancing Rain, winnerof last year=s Oaks and German Oaks, andExcelebration, winner of last year=s Prix du Moulin. Johannesburg was by no means everyone=s favoritestallion before his sale to Japan, but he may have left aworthwhile legacy in the U.S. In addition to being thesire of leading second-crop sire Scat Daddy, he wasalso responsible for Teuflesberg. Teuflesberg enjoyed his finest moment in winning theGII Woody Stephens S. in 2007 and now his first-cropson Trinniberg has won the same valuable prize (despitebeing a $1,500 yearling). Teuflesberg has also drawnattention to himself by siring a 2-year-old full-sister toTrinniberg who sold for $450,000 at the Fasig-TiptonMidlantic May sale. Unfortunately Teuflesberg doesn=thave numbers on his side (49 foals in his first twocrops), but I expect that might be about to change.

From Startto Finish...

with Darley Flying Start=s Sophie Ignarski

While the 12 of us have been fairly well-immersed inour penultimate engagement of this phase of theprogram (our 5-week long work placements), none ofus could have missed the huge buzz of anticipationsurrounding a long-awaited potential Triple Crownwinner, on whom fate struck the cruellest of blows onFriday last week. Each trainee has been placed with one of a range ofpeople and organisations, including trainers, bloodstockagents, sales companies and veterinarians, in locationsspanning from east coast to west here in the U.S. Some had been fortunate enough (thanks toplacements with New York-based operations) toexperience the atmosphere and build-up at theepicentre of it all in Belmont Park, and while theannouncement of I'll Have Another's late scratch was afirm reminder that nothing can be taken for granted inracing, it was still an exceptional few weeks to savour. For those working on the backside, there surelycouldn't have been a more memorable opportunity.Ohio-native Tricia Calkins has been working at the NewYork Racing Association and spent her first few weeksalongside the NYRA executive staff, working on finalpreparations for Belmont day and upcoming NYRApresentations. She also had the enviable opportunity ofwatching the main contenders train each morning, aswell as attend all the racing; one highlight she mentionedwas a star turn (on the first day of her placement) inGodolphin=s It=s Tricky=s GI Ogden Phipps win photo! Another trainee making some win photo appearancesover the last fortnight was Jim Clarke, who has beenworking at Belmont Park with trainer Kiaran McLaughlinand his assistant Artie Magnuson. Jim=s first two weeksincluded the opportunity to learn about every aspect ofthe stable routine (including morning workouts, raceselection and veterinary care) as well as escort all thetrainer=s runners to and from the track. Aspiring trainerJack Davison has been working under the experttutelage of fellow Irishman Eoin Harty at HollywoodPark, and has been busying himself with similarfundamental stable duties of hotwalking and tackingup, plus the occasional riding stint in between. Not every Darley Flying Start trainee can lay claim tohaving worked in the Belmont-winning trainer=s stable, and Sebastien Desmontils (whose previous incarnationsinclude time working as an amateur jockey in France)found himself in just that fortunate position working atMichael Matz=s Maryland stable. Sebastien, who hasbeen riding five lots each day, told me: >I've been givena unique opportunity to see how a top-class Americantraining operation is run, with 60 high-profile horsesmanaged by an incredible team.

Every day working with Mr. Matz and his staff is ahuge learning opportunity which is underpinned by atotal passion and commitment to the sport.@ In California, Emma Pearce has been at TVG workingunder Christina Olivares= expert guidance, spendingtime at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita alongside thechannel=s production assistants and researchdepartment. Emma=s upbringing at the heart of racing(her parents are trainers back in the UK) has clearlymade her a valuable addition to the team, her expertiseleading to a central role in researching commentary forthe presenters on Epsom Derby day! Finally, placed with John Shirreffs is Jin Tian, whospoke very enthusiastically of his time so far with theCalifornia-based trainer. He told me that he has beenassigned with the task of monitoring and recording thefeeding, health and training of 10 horses, requiringmeticulous attention to detail and some careful recordkeeping. I wonder if his next update will feature hisdecision to sleep in the horses= stalls alongside them... Sarah has been hard at work here at the TDN officesin New Jersey, and Steve (O'Connor), Stephen (Heath),Ian, Madoka and I have been mainly based in Lexington;news of our placements will follow. All of us wish toexpress our sincere thanks to those who havewelcomed us to their farms, offices and barns and haveprovided us all with such fantastic and memorableexperiences so far.
