hi everyone!!! WOW! can you belive the circle k term is alomst over?! :O I can’t! finishing my last newsletter was a bittersweet moment... I’m gald to almost be done with my duties but sad that i won’t ever do a newsletter again. but enough sadness! let me just say that Being your 2013-2014 publications editor has been such a wonderful experience! :) I got to see what the club does behind the scences, i got to meet my fellow boardies better, and i learned how to use illustrator, hehehe :3 With that said, I just want to thank everyone on board, not just for giving me the opportunity to be on board but for being so caring and so supportive. Thank you to my writers, not just the ones from from this edition but to all my previous writers. Thanks mentwin for making the circlk k photo page! (you saved me from so much facebook stalking!) thank you general members for all the time and dedication you put into this club. You have truely changed ucla circle k for the better :) And lastly, thank you to my kla$$y Koopa cubbies. you all have been such a joy and inspira-tion. and I am so grateful and proud to be your circle k mom! <3 :D

One last time. But really: TIME HAS REALLY FLOWN BY. Here I am with my last President's Message to you all, still in disbelief with how fast the year is going by. It's been a great one though. With our last push for MRP, we are ending the term strong with over 14,000 service hours (Yes, we did surpass our 12,000 service hours goal that we set at the beginning of the year). Get ready to finish off the term well at End of the Quarter Potluck on Thursday of 10th Week, as well as at District Convention for those of you who are going (it's going to be great!). For those of you who will not be able to attend, no worries: SAVE THE DATE for Sunday, April 20th! We will be celebrating all of your accomplishments at our End of the Year Banquet that night!

I am truly amazed and inspired by the dedication and impact that each of you have made in the club and in our community. Each and every one of you (including myself) have grown into a better leader. Now, with a new board and start of a new term, I encourage you all to continue to grow. My number one hope was for you all to be able to take something from Circle K that you can keep and contin-ue to apply to yourself. Whether it be new skills, friendships, ser-vice, inspiration--no matter what it is, I hope it inspires you to share it and pass it on to others. Continue to grow as leaders as

Going to alexandria house to help out gave me an idea of where the money that we had made from pillow fight went to, and i definitely approve! over the course of this year, i have lent a hand at alexan-dria house twice. the first time i went to alexandria house, we woke up early in the morning and drove to alexandria house, which is in downtown LA. when we got there, we started organiz-ing clothing and toys from the shed. later in the day, we moved in the new refrig-erator, except there was one problem, it couldn’t fit through the doorway! how-ever, luckily, a worker at alexandria house helped medismatle the door of the new refrigerator so that

it would fit. Afterwards, we all headed to the kitch-en to organize the food! The second time I went to alexandria house, i helped out with pulling out the weeds from the backyard and with house chores such as vacuuming and wiping down the furni-ture. to end my second trip to alexandria house, i went back to the shed to help organize more cloth-ing and toys. overall, i enjoyed my experience working at alexandria house because i can per-sonally help out rather than just donating money. i would recommend any cki member to volunteer at alexandria house at least once in their ucla careers!

ON thursday, Janu-ary 23rd, the fundraising team brought a variety of savory, mouth-watering dim sum straight from Yum Cha Cafe i nthe 626 to sell to fellow bruinson bruin

being one of the large-scale projects that we, as ucla cirlce k have hosted, the trip to the califor-nia science center with stu-dents from playa del rey elementary has been influen-tial and enter-taining service events i have attened thus far as a member in cirlce k. as members of our club led smaller groups that were broken up by grade levels, the kids within

those groups got to interact with the kids and kids with the college students. within these smaller groups, we toured aroudn the Science center while looking for an-swers for scav-enger hunt! the incentive for the scavenger hunt was a secret prize at the end of the day, so there was a lot of excit-ment from thek-ids to actively participate at the science center to not


only look for the an-swers, but to learn more about the human body, space, and kelp forests, and even the endeavor space shuttle!

going to the cal-ifornia science center was a great learning experience for the kids, but the members that at-tended learned a lot as well. whether it was tolerance with younger kids, actual science, learned from the science center, or

how much kids today in a gerneration after ours is so in-telligent and intui-tive! being able to work with kids for a service project is one of the best ser-vice we can do be-cause it doesn’t even feel like service to the community since i have such a great time interacting with kids who really open my eyes to what the world has become. as some might say, “there is hope for hu-manity!”

What Rhymes with Service? More Service!

From February 15 through to Febru-ary 17, UCLA CKI had their quarterly Service Marathon, except this was only the second part of their amaz-ing service efforts. They helped out a variety of people from the LA Food Bank to furry friends to even the general environment on this three day service spree. Unfortunately due to my schedule, I could only attend two events but as they say, “Every little bit counts!”

On February 16, I went to my first event of Service Marathon. We went all around campus singing songs, talking about life, and piggy-back riding back and forth from trash can to trash can, digging for recycla-bles that people forgot to put into the right container. The best part, it was late at night, from 11pm until 1 am, when not a soul is to be seen,

except us. There were creepy crawly ants and menacing screams from one of our members, Lisa, because she gets scared easily. For the most part, it was a fun bonding experi-ence and a nice way to get to know the campus a little better, especial-ly since I never really went far into south campus, despite being a south campus major.

On the last day of the event, we went to the beach! You can guess it, we had a ton of fun in the morning sun! We walked along the shore and found many miniscule pieces of trash as well as random large pieces, and even better, we found a plastic ball and a sandcastle starfish. Unfortu-nately, we decided to throw them away since there was no one around to claim them, but they were an ex-citing finds, nonetheless. After a long morning at the beach, I finally got back to my daily life on campus and was exhausted from the amazing adventures I had during the Service Marathon.

he pre-gammy Volunteering was an event packed full of celebrities, food, drinks, and a night of fun. Arriving early or late, all of the volunteers were dressed up classy and set on a job either setting up, leading guests down the red carpet, or serving food during the special perfor-mances. when I first arrived at theevent, I was placed straight into working on the red carpet. The coor-dinator gave the new arrivlas a quick run-down on how to lead and how to promote their electronic publicity. Walk-ing down the red carpet, the guests were bombarded with questions and photos. Ranging from televi-sion actors and actresses to sing-ers and dancers, a huge variety of celebrities were present.

Inside the venue, after all the guests had arrived and been inter-viewed, the auditorium was packed full of singers and bands. We were able to help pass out food on trays and work the sample booths. At the end of the event, the volunters were able to test out some of the sample booth foods ranging from chickpeas, tens of flavors of tea, to

Izze. Although the event was glitzy and glamorous, the cirlce k-ers stayed late into the night to help behind the scenes in packing up: we cleaned and folded tables, t r a n s f e r r e d all the un-touched drinks

Benjamin WuService VP This was my first time going to DLSSP, and i go to work on a school restoration proj-ect while have the chance to bond with many different circle k’ers from all over the district. it was definitely a rewarding experience! we started the day early in

downey, spending time catching up with oldfriends and meet-ing new ones, while enjoying a light breakfast. after that, we started off the session with a generalintroduc-tion, and energized ourselves by engaging in competitive cheer battles with other schools. after, we were split into groups to accomplish the

school restoration project. my group first focused on scraping the walls using a tool to remove paint that was alredy coming off, and i can say it was definitely tiring work! at about noon, my group took a berak, as we enjoyed lunch. after lunch, we were back off to work! now, we were asked to use primer and paint to help repaint the worn down paint all around the building. we helped paint until the entire building was completely covered in paint, after which we were asked to reconvene in the gym. in the gym, we engaged in yet another spirited battle of cheers, and it was amazing to hear how united, loud, and proud our club was compared to other schools. after a series of closing statements, lots of thank yous and acknowledgements, we celebrated the end DLSSP South 2014 on a high note by heading off to where else ... Portos! This was honestly one of my favorite events. the obvious change that we were able to witness showed how much our effortes mattered, and it was a great feeling to think about how these stu-dents would come back to a school completely renovated. if you haven’t gone, you should definitely consider going next year! shout out to jesus pelayo (dlssp south chair), the district service committee, and our very own michael yebisu for helping to put this event together and make it a success! you, way to go, you!

To my board babies.. you're not babies anymore! I'll always be your board momma. Rain or shine I'll be there for you even now that our term is over. LOOOVE you always!

Although there was a lot of work to be done, being able to under-stand the club and ana-lyzing aspects of the club on a deeper level was an eye-opening experience. But not only that, being able to take care of A-Board and helping them to develop individually would be one of the experiences on E-Board that I valued the most during the term. But don't worry, you won't be seeing the last of me yet hehehehe :p

Coming from someone who didn't even consider run-ning for Executive Board until a day before nomi-nations, I have to say that going through with elections was one of the best decisions I've made, both within the club and in general. This year has had its share of ups-and-downs, but in the end, I'm glad I got to be a part of it. Good luck to the newly elected Execu-tive Board! I am certain that you all will contin-ue on the legacy of UCLA Circle K!

I can't believe how fast time flew by this past year. It felt like it was yesterday when I was preparing for the 2013-2014 elections haha. Anywho, it has been a pleasure and honor to have served all of you as your club Treasurer this year. I had an amazing time working with my fellow E-boardies and I'm gonna miss seeing them at least three times a week hew hew lol. Newly elected E-board: Congratulations on your new positions and I can't wait to see what you all have in store for the new term. :D Farewell my friends and I shall see you all around for another year keke.

one january 26, 2014, I woke up bright and early because david Limjoco said

the district board had to discuss many impending topics for the upcoming year and it was really en-tertaining to

he’d leave me if i wasn’t at De Neve Turnaround by 7AM. Why was punc-tuality so import-ant? David, Alice Wei, Sally Law, and I were heading to Rancho Cu-camonga, which was where the district board meeting was being

held. We were fortu-nate enough to have attended. It was my first District event; actually i think it was my first event where I got to meet a lot of other schools! When we arrived everyone looked nice and spiffy. it was business formal and everyone looked serious and ready for business once we entered the room! We were there for along time because the

witness the par-liamentary pro-cedures. I thought the most e n t e r t a i n i n g thing for me was david’s speech that he totally did not write on

the spot. I always liked great public speakers and it was a sight to see. After what i think was four hours, the meeting was a d j o u r n e d for the public and we were able to go home! we stopped for boba in the San Gabriel valley too!

VCN (Vietnamese Culture Night) was a great experience to watch. There were lots of performances such as traditional dancing all the way to hip-hop dancing. There were lots of

singing and instrumental music as well. It featured a show where it showed a young boy who drops out of high school to work in a restaurant. He also has a brother who is diagnosed with autism. The young boy’s mom doesn’t quite have patience with his autistic brother and often scolds at him. However, we learn that the mom was treated badly by her father in the past and soon learns to have patience for her son. The event promoted awareness of autism and taught us to have patience with people. It’s hard to tell whether or not someone is diag-nosed with autism. In the end, I had a great time because there were a lot of Circle K people there to support the people that were in it and got to hang out with people.


Vitnamese Culture night (VCN) was absolutely spectacular and amazing! The 34th annual VCN was full of laugh-ter, surprises, and tears. The event started with a vietnamese speech about what it meant to be vietnamese and what vcn was about. After speeches and thank yous, the curtains opened up. The play was about a family surrounded by autism, but at the same time, it was much more than that. The story revolved around two vietnamese-American brothers, andrew and christopher and showed how strong family love and bonds are even when times are tough. The actos did a great job connecting with the audience. As you learn about everyone’s life and past, you also learn about the horror of the physical abuse the mother suffers. There were many scences that tugged at your heart and made you want to scream and cry. For example, when the bullies start-ed to take advantage of christopher’s

illness, I wanted to get off my seat and start beating them up. But there were also scenes where you could tell notice how much the family loved each other. Futher-more, the scene that made me gasp was right before intermission because it left on a huge cliffhanger. in that scene, you see andrew leave the house because he couldn’t take it anymore from his mother. this leads to a chain of events where andrew’s grandfather needs help with his medicine and usually andrew would give it to him. instead, christopher tires to help him. with a scis-sor in his hand, you hear off-stage someone falling and then a thud. then all of a sudden the lights turn on and we would have to wait another 30 minutes to find out what happened. genius! Also, there were other performances that went along during the play or during transitions. Some of the mos notable performances that I saw were from awechords, traditional dance, non-traditional dance and vsu modern. I want to just congratulate all the cirlce k members that participated in vcn because the performances were in sync and just amazing. at the end, the family was able to reconcile and ended on a god note with a beautiful light festival. something that i really liked and wokred for me , was the integration of viet-namese and english words within the play. All in all, it was a great and emotional experience and i would recom-mend attending future vcns because i definitely will!!

Friday, January 17, 2014 was a night of fun, great music, and many feelz. ucr hosted their annual k-Rock benefit concert that night to riase money for one of our dis-trict fundraising initiatives: pediat-ric trauma preven-tion. there were many great performances by groups like not so sharp, hip hop con-

violin playing, magic tricks, and more. ucr made beautiful gift baskets that attend-ees were able to bid on. you were also able to bid for a serenade by david choi! ucla definitely took ad-vantage of the photo-booth there and enjoyed the food and performances. the best part of the night were the performanc-

es by our fellow circle k members, dianne tulud (and joshua quinto) and our very own na-talie yip! it was really awesome seeing one of our very own performing on stage - we defi-nitely cheered as loud as we could to show our love for na-talie! (great job na-talie! - there proba-bly a video out there for those of you who missed the perfor-mance.) overall, it was a great night! lots of mingling, moving to the groove, and best of all, cheering on our very own natalie yip.

Going to the Amazing race, i thought it would be a fun afternoon roaming around campus and west-wood solving clues with my family. I had no idea what i was getting myself into. as soon as we got our clues, all families started running. my family, the kla$$y koopas, and bo bo bowser rangers decided to go for a different strategy. our fami-lies decided to figure out all the clues first, and then map out stra-tegically how to get from one loca-tion to the next the fastest. Most clues were pretty easy, but there were a few, like the first dorm on campus, that took us a lot of googling. once we fig-ured out all of our locations, off we we went! at first, we were neck and neck with bo bo bowsers. either we would get to a location first or they would. Eventually we deviated from the same route anD

lost them. I was exhaused as soon as we started the race! who knew that i would do so much running?! I was definitely not dressed properly or prepared to do such extreme phys-ical exercise. If i had a choice, i would have walked the whole thing. However, we had some extremely enthusiastic mem-bers of the family, namely jong and juelline, who wanted to run everywhere. As soon as we got our final picture,

we all sprinted back to janss steps. As we got closer, we saw that we were the first family there, which caused us to run even faster to vic-tory. By the time we got there, we were all exremely exhausted and sweaty, but relieved that our hard work payed off. After all the other families got to wilson plaza,

billy finaly crowned the win-ners. our family, having completed the race in the fastes time, was rewarded the cham-pionship belt, a lovely thing made of a paper plate and lots of duck tape. the amazing race was a crazy, c o m p e t i -t i o n - s p a r k i n g event that I really enjoyed doing with my family.

Circle k is the only time and place were usc and ucla can be friends. so, when the january di-visional council meeting location was an-nounced to be at usc, i was excited to attend and see my metro division friends! as an icebreaker, charles made us grab toilet paper and tell fun facts about ouselves. the rules were, the more sheets you grabbed, the more questions you have to answer. luckily, i had done this activity before and only grabbed one sheet while others grabbed handfuls (we learned a lot of interest-ing about people). the dcm proceeded like normal; we went over past events, announced future events, and most importantly talked about dis-trict convention!!!!!! charles, our lieutenant gov-ernor, even brought snacks for us to eat and mingle after the event. afterwards, Ucla circle k decided to take advantage of the sunny after-noon and had a mini photoshoot in front of every fountain we saw on campus. we even took a pic-ture with tommy the trojan in our la gang sign. all in all, it was a fun afternoon, and a nice gateaway from our campus.

I learned three things from attending the janu-ary DCM:

1. No one at USC knows where any of the buildings are.2. water at starbucks costs 30 cents3. bruins do, do it better than trojans. #fact

- Cheering, cheering, and even more cheering- awards! plenty of ‘em to go around!- meet/reunite with friends from other schools. - get suited up and fancy!- two words: energy drinks.- pretty good food, if i do say so myself...- A dance!- workshops and caususing!

- finish your finals in a timely manner- pack all your fun and fancy clothes- speak very little to preserve your voice- pack an energy drink or two- bring snacks for late night cravings- expect little sleep during the course of DCON- Have an open heart and mind

1. What is your name? Gautum Gupta

2. What year are you? First Year

3. What major are you? Computer Science

4. Why did you decide to join circle k? I really enjoyed my four years in key club when i was in high school, and i figured Circle K was a great way to continue doing what i love while making new friends and easing myself into college.

5. What is your favorite Circle K event? So far, I’d say Pillow Fight was the event that “wowed” me the most - an event that’s all about fun but behind the scences is raising thousands of dollars for those in need. It always amazes me to see so many people come together for a cause.

6. What is your favorite Circle K related memory? One of my favorite is also one of my first: after cki south, we all headed to kbbq to finish off the night. i was introduced to kevin (my current dad, too!) and. . . I quickly learned it’s not too unusual for him to end the night with ice cream all over his face. 7. What are some things (hobbies, sports, clubs, etc) you like to do outside of circle K? Mostly just lots of photography! Although I’m not yet part of any other clubs, i like to spend my time taking pictures, learning programming lan-guages, or sleep. (I sleep a lot. . .)

8. If you could travel anywher (fiction or real) where owuld it be and why? All and any parts of Asia - I’d love to just travel around the nations and ex-perience all the different foods and culture. If possible, I’m hoping to even study abroad there some day!

On thursday, february 13, 2014, the gentlemen of ucla circle K waited by the bruin bear with dozens of roses. As they saw the girls of ucla cirlce k, they handed them a rose. Thank you, not only to the gentlemen who handed out the roses, but also to those that prepared and did all the behind the scenes stuff. Thank you for making us feel special and loved.
