Hello everyone,

Here I am with the President’s Message for the very last time ): It’s hard to believe that it’s been

an entire year with all of you in UCLA Circle K. It’s been a surreal experience that I won’t forget andwouldn’t trade for anything else. That being said, February has always been known that last pushfor MRP, and man did we rock and exceed those grand expectations that we set for ourselves.As we near the end of the term, we were able to achieve nearly 17,000 service hours, raise over

$4000 for our DFI’s, and make much more for other charities such as Alexandria House with a clubof over 300 members! Wow. Just looking at numerical values alone, one could truly understandwhy UCLA Circle K is the best in the world.However, if there’s anything I want everyone to take from this, I want everyone to remember

the impact and dedication that everyone put forth in bringing good to the community. For mepersonally, I hope I was able to inspire people to find that spark and passion for service. To be ableto enjoy doing what they do because they enjoy lending a hand to others in need, to help bringa smile to other people’s faces.I also want to take this time to also thank everyone on this sometimes tumultuous but mostly

bumpy free road. Without you all, this year wouldn’t have been as successful as it is. Thank youto our faculty adviser Rich Thigpen for checking up often and for your wise suggestions abouteverything encompassing Circle K. Thank you to the board members and committees for yourpassion in putting many different weekly events together for everyone to come out to. Thank you

to the Family Heads and Godparents for helping to make the club feel like home and retainingmany of our members. Thank you to the past boards and alumni for setting the foundation forfuture leaders to follow. Lastly, I would like to thank every member in this club, for being internallymotivated and genuinely caring about the club’s success. No matter if you have a position withinthe club, we are all members first, and I truly appreciate and want to commemorate what everyonehas done, no matter how big or small, to continue to make UCLA Circle K what it is today.I’ll end the message with this! As we all continue to develop and build ourselves as leaders,

stay humble and passionate, make friends with many friendly people around you in the club,

and continue to be inspired and inspire our current and future leaders of the club. And like I saidearlier this year about Circle K being like my girlfriend, please take care of her and give her loveand affection, and I’ll be the happiest person in the world. I leave the rest to you all, the futureleaders of the club, to write the story for future years to come.Farewell, and see you all at either DCON or at my End of the Year Banquet! I think that there is a strange gap between 8th and 10th week, in which we have a limbo-period ofpeace, and no midterms or finals are to be had, only to be thrown full throttle into finals week. RIP.

On a more related note: it is hard to believe that this will be the last newsletter I will be releasingmy term! I’m sad to say that my term is almost over, and that my time on appointed board is aboutto conclude. With that being said, I truly believe that UCLA CKI has given me some of the mostamazing opportunities I could’ve asked for. Regardless of position, this club allows all of us theopportunities to serve not only as volutneers, but as leaders, and I believe that this experience istruly invaluable.

I hope to see you all in the next year, and I wish my successor the best of luck for their upcomingterm. Good luck on finals, everyone!

There are many ways! Just think, instead of managing

time, you create time.

Get rid of all distractions; if you don’t need a laptop,

get rid of it. There are plenty of website blockers to

use as well.

Be sure to find a setting that works for you--what

works for you may not work for everyone. You can gowith friends, go to the library, or go to the coffeeshop,

etc.

Create incenstives for yourself. If you do well, treat

yourself. I also find the 50 min. studying/10 min. breakmethod effective!

Make sure to create a block of time that you muststudy, no exceptions, each day to keep yourself on

track. Cramming only works if you know the material.

So no all-nighters right before!

“Oh shoot it’s 8.53 am”was my reaction when I woke up and realized that the meeting time was 9.00am! On Sunday February 8th 2015, few other Circle K friends and I went to Playa Del Rey (a kindergartenschool) to finish painting the wall from what has been done by the previous group. The day started as achilly Sunday with a cold breeze of air (luckily it wasn’t sunny at first since we worked for 4 hours straight)

The previous group finished most of the drawings for us. However, there were still tons of painting we

needed to complete. We thought (at least I did) that it wouldn’t take much time just to paint the drawings(since we have a dozen of people helping). Turn out we had to paint the whole wall, since apparently itneeds to look like a sky.

So what did we need when we need to paint a ‘sky’? Yes, we needed blue galore. So I, who took art

class last time in middle school (not to mention how badly I did in the class), volunteered to mix the paintsto create a light blue color. Surprisingly, the color was close to sky blue! To be honest, anyone could havemixed that color (I mean I just randomly poured blue and white together). People were all astonishedabout my mixture of paint, when in fact my mom told me that my drawing is worse than a nursery student

Although we did not finish painting the whole wall, we pretty much finish 90 percent what needed

to be done. Not only that I felt like I contributed to the community (after haven’t been doing communityand service for so long), I also felt like I had a chance to bond with many of Circle K members. Yes, it wasan early Sunday morning. But no, I didn’t feel like I wasted my sleeping time – if I had to wake up the sametime again to participate in this event, I would gladly repeat it.

BOOKMARK MAKINGOn Friday, February 6th, several UCLA CKI members met up

at Ackerman and kicked off their service marathon weekendwith Bookmark Making, an event that fueled their imaginationsand unleashed their creativities! Because one of our ongoing

events, Reading for Kids, was scheduled to occur the followingweek, our members were asked to create cute corner bookmarksto promote literacy and to encourage reading. For the entire

duration of the event, the attendees stepped into the shoes oftheir childhood selves and brought their unique ideas to life.

All around the room, members were laying out colorfulsheets of construction paper, eager to showcase their artisticabilities. However, none of us really knew how to start untilJamie Sison carefully led us with her instructions and inspired

us with her adorable creations! Soon after, we were all in ourown little worlds, tracing plentiful bookmark templates, cuttingthem out, and gluing them together. Once we were contentwith our amount of templates, we picked up markers and pens,transforming ourselves into little Picasso’s and Van Gogh’s.

Within an hour, vibrant collections of bookmarks began tospread across the tables. There were cupcake, strawberry, andwhale bookmarks in one corner of the room, while another cornerhad bookmarks of the sun, dinosaurs, and fish. Some memberseven recreated Baymax, a popular protagonist from the Disney

movie, Big Hero 6. Although some members were originally a bitshy and were not as proud of their art as they should have been,many of us were not afraid to show our support for our peers.Comments such as, “That’s so cute,”and “This is so creative”were

constantly being heard across the room. It’s amazing to knowhow thoughtful and sweet everyone is!

Even though we were met with cold weather that evening,there was never a single dark or dull moment. Our love for serviceand our compassion towards each other filled the day with

warmth and laughter. From this event, I learned that sometimeswe need to get in touch with our childish sides and we mustwelcome all opportunities to make differences. One can routeback this event to this year’s District Service Initiative, Leapingfor Literacy! I also learned that when you’re around individuals as

friendly as UCLA’s CKI members are, you tend to forget about allthe bad things and your spirits are always lifted.

“Hey, do you think I could get a picture with you?” This was what I asked Jonathan Bennett as he walked passed me and I have never smiled bigger. He’s not the most famous person now,

but I was still star-struck, and now, I feel like I’ve been formally initiated into the LA life. The Pre-Grammy Event at Ohm Nightclub was so much more than just meeting celebrities. The event was held on February 5th, a Thursday

night that went into the morning of the next day. Our job was to help out a CKI alumni, Mark Nguyen. The people who had gone earlier made

gift bags, but as soon as I got there, all of them were packed and ready to go. My first job was to eat something from the amazing food tablethat was set out. I spent the rest of the night hopping from place to place. At times, I would serve water to the vendors. I advertised for someof the products in the VIP room.

On top of meeting new CKI volunteers, I also got to network with some of the people who were important enough to actually be invited to

this event. They were incredibly intimidating, but I appreciate the experience; talking to people has never been a great skill of mine, but I feelmore confident after being able to talk to network executives and NPR hosts.

When all the work was done, the volunteers posed on the red carpet and danced the night away to the sound of reggae music. This wasthe best Thursday night I’ve ever had!

This K-Kids meeting took place on a Wednesday, February afternoon

at Playa del Rey Elementary School. The afternoon was uncannily,excruciatingly hot, especially in a non-air conditioned room. Despite theheat, the volunteers and the K-Kids still went on with the meeting. This eventwas small-scale compared to a lot of other events the UCLA Circle K has. The

number of volunteers were four and the amount of kids at the meeting wereseven. Usually there would be about fifteen K-Kids at the meeting but dueto some announcement issues, word did not spread that there would bea K-Kids Meeting that day. This was my first time at a K-Kids meeting andfor the first time I got to see the K-Kids that UCLA Circle K were supporting!

Meetings are only held once a month, and usually at these meetings, theK-Kids would write their “pen pal”letters to fellow Circle K members at UCLA.

This month’s meeting was quite different as the K-Kids made Valentine’sDay cards for the elderly at a senior citizen convalescent home throughout

the entirety of the meeting. With the help of the Circle K volunteers, theK-Kids made a total of twenty-three Valentine’s Day cards! Many of the cardswere unique and different, even though the supplies used to make themwere simple. The supplies included regular construction paper, foam paper,crayons, markers, and origami paper. Personally, I made three Valentine’s Day

cards while most of the volunteers and K-Kids made around two to three. The cards were sent to a convalescent home called Country Villa South,and passed out Sunday morning on the 15th. Many of the senior citizensappreciated the cards and I hope to be able to attend the next K-Kids event!It is a joy teaching students the value of community service and how it builds

On February 6, 2015, the 19th annual SuperBowl-A-Thon took placeat Bowlmor Lanes in Santa Monica to benefit the Westside Coalition. Asa new member, this was my third Circle K event, and I’m really glad I wasable to go. Everybody there was so enthusiastic and many of the teams had

matching t-shirts or sweaters. There were 900 bowlers in total, representingvarious businesses, agencies, and local government. Of course, because ofthe large amount of people competing, each team of bowlers was assignedone of eight strict time slots. Sadly, the stars were not aligned that day andour group of ten CKI members was not able to bowl with our Santa Monica

Kiwanians. We still had a fantastic time, though. The inside of the buildingwas dim but brilliant lights lined the lanes and anything white glowed.Being the incredulous college students we were, we ooh-ed and aah-ed and,naturally, took many pictures of the glowing outlines of our free bowlingshoe rentals. We were also provided with free t-shirts for the event and free

lunches donated by generous sponsors like Jersey Mike’s Subs. After eating,we split up into teams. It was Thien T., Lauryn, Thien N., Sonya, and myselfversus Herman, Jennifer Shin, Estrella, Alex Lam, and Juliana.

I wish I could say I bowled three strikes in a row and got a turkey (‘cause…

you know), but I didn’t. Because I’m a horrible bowler. But Jennifer did hustlethe rest of us with her modesty and bowled a total of four strikes! I thinkHerman also plays professionally on the side. At one point, my team was justa few points away from the other team but toward the end of the round,everyone on the other team suddenly improved tenfold and thus my team

was defeated. Nonetheless, everyone had a blast competing against eachother and our two lanes finished before anyone else’s. After the rest of theteams had finished their games, we all went outside and took group photoswith a few Kiwanians, including Robert Kronovet (President), Maggie Hall

(Secretary), Jessica Handy (President Elect), and Phil Brock (our Kiwanisadvisor). This event was a great way for me to get closer to some more Circle

K members other than my cousin (Thien Tran) and to finally meet someKiwanians. You should definitely sign up next time this event rolls aroundand try your hand at a TurKey!

K-KIDS MEETING: VALENTINES DAY THEMED

So the day after Compton Initiative/January DCM, we had the Santa Monica beach Ccean we were given a Bruin Cub (high school KIWIN’s or Key Club mentee) it was our chance to meet tSome of us took the bus over, some drove, but we all got to the same destination! When we got twe started to mingle with the Palisades KIWIN’s and the Santa Monica Key Club people. They w

bit shy, but some of them opened up after a bit.We were then broken up into groups, and then the cleaning began! We got talking about

they wanted as a career, concerns they had about college, and just what they like to do in generabeach was pretty clean, but we found some…interesting things…Afterwards, we got to have fdoing a scavenger hunt! Once again, we were broken up into different groups and we had task

ranged from getting lunch, taking a picture with a dog (still my fave picture haha), and strollinthe Promenade. Good thing I had people on my team who knew Santa Monica well, because I sdidn’t. We met up to find out the winners, and it turns out the scavenger hunt was pretty close! Sout to my team for winning and getting cute little tsum tsums! Once the winners were announceall had to say goodbye to our new friends and new cub mentees…It was still lots of fun and I’m g

BEACH CLEAN UP & SOCIAL WITH KIWIN’S & KEY CLU

This past Friday, a large group of UCLA Circle K members headed towards Riverside to support UCR’sannual fundraiser, Kids Rock Benefit Concert, which gave all of its proceeds to the Eliminate Project. Three cars

left from UCLA at different times and after navigating through almost four hours of traffic, we made it to UCRiverside!

We found the HUB, where the concert was held, checked in, and each of us received a free reusable waterbottle. Yay for free stuff! Inside, the room was filled with game booths, prize tables, and a photo booth; itwas also decorated to match the Neon Karnival theme, complete with flashing lights and circus tent table

centerpieces. Although we came a bit late, we were still able to see most of the amazing performances,

including Michael Hu & Amanda Ong ft. Nick Carrillo, Kat Padlan, Sleightly Musical, Senryu Taiko, Nick Carrillo& Amanda Ong, Centro, HMWK, Not So Sharp, and JR Aquino, who we even got to meet and take pictures with!Overall, the event was amazing! We got to see amazing performances while supporting one of our DFIs

and a fellow Circle K club. The night ended with us having an extremely late dinner together and heading back

Honestly, that was my entire through process the wholetime I was at lunch. I went to M Grill for Dine LA with my family,Chocolicious Musketeers. *insert woohoos here* At first we didn’trealize that you could make reservations, so we had to wait for an

hour to be seated. Luckily for us, we were in the heart of Ktown (sidenote: why is there a Brazillian BBQ place in the middle of Ktownand all the KBBQ places?) so we had many places to explore. We

went to Daiso and found fun things to play with and cheap thingsto buy before throwing coins in the fountain in the middle of the

shopping center. Shoutout to grandcubbie Katherine for being thecoin throwing MVP and almost hitting a lady passing by hehe

Finally we went back to M Grill and we were seated. The servertold us to flip the card from green to red if we ever needed a breakfrom all the meat. I thought, nah, I won’t ever need to flip this, I’ll

probably be begging for meat since they’ll probably just walk pastour table. BOY WAS I WRONG. I went to the salad bar to grab somefruits and salad and when I came back we were ambushed withso many kinds of meat: top sirloin, bottom sirloin, house special,

sausage, parmesan beef, and so many other types of meat. Theycame around again before I was even able to finish half of what wason my plate. Defeated, I had to turn my card to red, as did everyoneelse at the table. We struggled to finish all the meat on our plates.

THEN A MIRACLE HAPPENED AND THE PINEAPPLE MAN CAME. The

pineapple man was a server with grilled pineapple dusted withcinnamon and sugar and he was definitely the MVP of the day. Thepineapple was so delicious and the perfect palate cleanser. I felt likea new person after t hat. After we finished the pineapple, we wereall ready for another couple rounds of meat. When we were about

to burst, we requested the pineapple man come one last time.Sonya even took a picture with the pineapple man because he wasbae. We then left and had an adventure through the rain and trafficbefore coming back home to UCLA.

Even though my wallet is crying a little bit, this was probablyone of the best Dine LA deals and I was so happy to experience thisdining adventure with my family <3

K-ROCK

Coming from high school with two years of Key Club premade me burn out and apprehensive to join Circle K, howevesay that Snowcial has been the most memorable experience I

so far since joining!I was a driver and had 7 people in my car, which made for

bonding experience as we played the guessing game for sonwere contributed by every member put onto a CD. We left at 7January 23rd and it took the whole 3-hour trip to finish every so

along the way we learned a little about each other and even sby the road to take breaks and pictures. When we arrived, evproceeded to play the Skittles game and introduce themselvshortly afterwards we went to sleep. Unfortunately, we woke

Saturday morning to find out that the Snow Valley Resort closto hazardous weather, and instead went to the Village (dowarea) of Lake Arrowhead to look around, take pictures, feed dubond with everyone that didn’t go snowboarding. At night we atogether to eat dinner, watch Big Hero 6 and have Gautam’s ex

delicious crepes, something I looked forward to the entire dathe movie, everyone separated into different groups and I enrecruiting some people to play Resistance, which is a card gama bit like Mafia. Long story short, by the last round of Resistance

double the initial amount of players screaming (whisper-scrbecause of quiet hours) at each other, which made for sort ofbonding experience but one nonetheless! I would say that Resistance with everyone and bonding was the most memexperience I had at Snowcial, and it was really nice to finally m

many new people all at once in Circle K! As a first-year transfer sI didn’t get the chance to meet too many people, and I would oalone at the Circle K meetings. However, at just the last meetingthose I met came up to chat, which was definitely a nice change

blast at Snowcial, and I would say that Samantha and Gautam’sother members, contributions and dedication will serve as insto make the event even greater than it was this year in the futu

Sunday morning, sun was shining! On February 8th, I woke up bright upearly to attend District Board Meeting at the Cal-Nev-Ha Kiwanis Headquarters

in Rancho Cucamonga. We were to venture off early by 7 AM, so I made anattempt at breakfast for Lisa, Jong, Josef, Lindon, and I. Once we filled up, weheaded out in our business professional attire down to the meeting – we HADto get there early to get front row seats!

The room was arranged in a typical meeting set-up; visitors such as myselfwere placed in the peanut gallery facing the set-up as an audience. DistrictBoard meetings are only held in-person so often (the last one being at Fall

Training Conference on November 7-9, 2014), so there were a ton of updatesand discussion points that the executive board, lieutenant governors, and

committee chairs had to go over. While a bit lengthy, the discussions andvoting processes were essential as different matters and opinions were sharedon bylaws, plans, and more; if anyone thought the three hours were long, justthink about how the District Board stayed there all weekend! Two of the majortopics to bring back to the club are the 2015-2016 District Service Initiative

(DSI) Helping the Homeless, and the 2015-2016 District Fundraising Initiatives(DFI) with the Pediatric Trauma Program, Kiwanis Family House, and ProjectHawaii.

Once meeting was adjourned, our 2014-2015 Lieutenant Governor

Brandon Baello gave us special AUTOGRAPHED Valentine grahms to our Metroattendees – you bet that we put it up on our walls to save 5eva. Afterwards,our group headed off for some NOMNOMs on an impromptu sushi adventure,suggested graciously by Google Maps! The portions were generous and wewere satisfied from this restaurant known as “Sake 2 Me.” The group split to

where half went back to attend Candidate Training Conference, and the otherhalf to Barnes and Noble to get our study grind on. By 4 PM, we were ridingoff into the sunset back home to UCLA. You may be wondering…. Who datdriver who took us all t he way there?! Super large thank you to Lindon Tran fordriving us safely throughout the day!

All in all, it was a good day to meet new and old friends, as well as goodreminder about the importance of professionalism and our lovely Sunny Cal-Nev-Ha Circle K International District. Something as simple as light kills 60,000 babies every year. Bet you didn’t know that, but those at DFI Night of Fun did! On Friday, February 13th, a group of Circcongregated at Wilson Plaza with the primary purpose of learning the three DFIs, and why we, as a club, fundraise for t he Eliminate Project, Pediatric Trauma Progra

Kiwanis Family House. Master Jong created a master plan to engrain the DFIs into our heads with games and workshops about the DFIs. Also, there were donuts. And DYummeh.

Once everyone had arrived, we started with the first game—the touching game—where each person received a slip of paper that said MNT, Healthy, or Circle Kegame explains that it is impossible to know who has MNT, and once it attacks someone healthy, that person has a high chance of dying. Nevertheless, we are behind our goal and need Circle Kers to continue raising money for this noble project before it ends t his year! The next game involved breaking up into three groups of four and balancing an egg on a spoon while walking around cones. Once each member of the gro

completed the task, they were timed to construct a protective cup that will prevent the egg from cracking or breaking when dropped. Overall, this set of games indicat

and forth between three members, and after each cycle of tosses, each member of the group took a step back. The last group with an unbroken egg won (Jong, Carolyme!). Jong then presented a workshop about the Kiwanis Family House and how we support it.

After the games and workshops, we cleaned Wilson Plaza and mourned the loss of our eggs. Still, we learned a great deal of information that we wouldn’t have leoutside of this event, so go to the next one! I, however, never found out who likes ¾ of a donut.
