The title of the event is “Global Inequalities.” DW is broadcasting the following programs in conjunction with the international media conference: The documentary Delicate Balance – Life in a Globalized World weaves together the stories of people on three continents: Afri- can migrants who want to escape to Europe, Spanish laborers who can no longer make a living and Japanese employees growing isolated in the modern world. Although we may not have much in common on the sur- face, we are all people and that connects us. We all have ambitions, desires and hopes. The opening match of the 21st FIFA World Cup is between Russia and Saudi Arabia. Title-holder Germany plays its first game on the 17 June against Mexico. German fans will be hoping that their team can hold on to the very end. Maybe they’ll even clinch the championships again in the final on 15 July at the Luzhniki Olympic Stadium in Moscow. The Germans have already won the cup four times – in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014. Deutsche Welle's news and magazine shows will be providing full coverage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. With a particular focus, of course, on the progress of the German team. ARTS.21 Architecture Biennale in Venice “Freespace” is the motto of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, which invites participants to engage with the social and creative potential of the public space. This is a precious commodity in the lagoon city, which has been threatened by rising water levels for decades. So, it's no surprise to learn then that Venice 2018 will play a bigger role in the world exhibition. The German pavilion focuses on a very particular free space: In its contribution “Unbuilding Walls,” curators, the architecture studio “Graſt” and former East German political activist Marianne Birthler explore what happened with areas in Berlin and along the former inner-German border, occupied by the Wall until 1989. A special edition of Arts.21 broadcast from Venice reports on new architectural approaches – from reunified Berlin to rural China. Architecture Biennale in Venice “Freespace” is the motto of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, which invites participants to engage with the social and creative potential of the public space. This is a precious commodity in the lagoon city, which has been threatened by rising water levels for decades. So, it's no surprise to learn then that Venice 2018 will play a bigger role in the world exhibition. The German pavilion focuses on a very particular free space: In its contribution “Unbuilding Walls,” curators, the architecture studio “Graft” and former East German political activist Marianne Birthler explore what happened with areas in Berlin and along the former innerGerman border, occupied by the Wall until 1989. A special edition of Arts.21 broadcast from Venice reports on new architectural approaches – from reunified Berlin to rural China.

EUROMAXX

Amsterdam's Secret Gardens Amsterdam's canals are world famous. A boat trip through the city's dense waterway system, lined with picturesque buildings, is a highlight of any visit to the Dutch capital. But what few visitors to Amsterdam know is that some of the beautiful gabled houses have gorgeous gardens. The idyllic green spaces are wellhidden and for private use only. But once a year, locals and tourists are allowed a glimpse behind the brick facades – during the “Open Tuinen Dagen,” or Open Garden Days. It's a chance to enter and admire nearly 30 green oases. Euromaxx takes a look by embarking on a tour of Amsterdam's secret canal gardens.

IN GOOD SHAPE

Forever Slim The global obesity rate is continually on the rise. It's thought that more than two billion people are currently affected. So the focus now has to be on losing weight – for the sake of health and wellbeing. In Germany alone, half the population would like to shed some pounds. But why do so few manage? After all, the diet market is saturated with offerings: Weight Watchers, lowcarb, the paleo or pineapple diets, miraculous powders that claim to reduce hunger pangs. Crash diets may help for rapid weight loss, but then the yoyo effect comes into play and dieters soon find they're back where they started. What's the secret to longterm weight loss with no negative impact on the human organism? Which foods are allowed, and what’s taboo? And which sport is the most effective way to burn fat? In Good Shape presenter Carsten Lekutat explores some answers to these questions with nutrition expert Dr. Stefan Lück.

The Ruins of Raqqa  In October 2017, Raqqa was liberated from the clutches of the Islamic State movement (IS). The city in northern Syria had for a long time been the unofficial capital of the socalled IS Caliphate, declared in 2014. Hundreds of civilians died in the battles for Raqqa, which has been reduced to rubble. It's a scene of utter devastation. The documentary The Ruins of Raqqa shows what life is like for those left behind.
