Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 14, 2018

Trust in God. Give yourself completely to God. Obey

the Commandments.

Today’s Gospel provides us with a clear path to obtaining Eternal

Life. This is found in Jesus’ discourse with the man who asked

Jesus directly what one must do to inherit Eternal Life. Jesus’

answer was simple: Obey the Commandments, follow me, and

donate your material possessions.

The answer may be simple, but in reality, this may be

a very difficult path to follow. Many struggle with obeying the

commandments. Catholics are very fortunate to have the

Sacrament of Reconciliation available. Make use of it as often

as possible. Don’t allow your venial sins to pile up. This may

cause you to get into a bad habit and you may dismiss the sins as

being unimportant. This will further distract and distance you

from God. If you are suffering from a mortal sin, then you need

the Sacrament of Reconciliation immediately. One of the worst

fates that can happen to a Catholic is for one to die with an unre-

pentant and unconfessed mortal sin.

Others are distracted and find it difficult to follow Jesus.

Following Jesus requires more than attending Mass once a week.

Following Jesus means involving Jesus in every part of your life

and in following Jesus’ example. Jesus will never abandon us.

Matthew 28:20 “…and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the

age”. Why do we abandon him? Instead, listen to Saint Therese

of Lisieux “Miss no single opportunity of making some small

sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always

doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.” Saint Therese

showed us that we can follow Jesus with even the smallest task by

doing it with love. Establish a personal relationship with Jesus.

Lastly, how many of us would give-up our material

possessions? Even the Apostles were astonished at Jesus’ words.

They further asked him, “who can be saved?” Jesus answered

them by stating that with God, all things are possible. This is

the absolute truth, and after Jesus’ resurrection, the Holy Bible

makes references to others in the church who followed Jesus.

Acts 2:45 “and they sold their possessions and goods and

distributed them to all, as any had need”. St. Francis of Assisi

and many other Saints followed this example. Here at San Miguel

Catholic Church, we have the Matthew 25 and Matthew 25

Outreach programs. Please continue to support these programs.

Matthew 25: 34-40 “Then the King will say to those at his right

hand, ‘Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom

prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was

hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me

drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and

you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison

and you came to me’. Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord,

when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give

thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome

thee, or naked and clothe thee? And when did we see thee sick or

in prison and visit thee? And the King will answer them, “Truly

I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these thy brethren,

you did it to me’. Then he will say to those at his left hand,

‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for

the devil and his angels…”

There is absolutely no doubt about Jesus’ words. Jesus

is very clear on what must be done to inherit Eternal Life.
