Weekly Reflection

Remaining steadfast in faith

Today’s readings and prayers encourage us to perse-vere in our faith. In his epistle, Saint Paul writes, “Beloved: Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it.” Saint Paul reminds us to hold steadfast to our belief in Christ Jesus even though the world challenges us on many occasions. We are an imperfect people and our interactions with one another reflect this. Today’s read-ings provide examples of times where faith in God has been tested. The Gospel gives the example of the wid-ow who is tireless in her efforts to receive a just decision from the corrupt judge. She is unwavering in her re-quest, believing that God will give her the strength to persevere, until the dishonest judge finally renders the just verdict. In the second example, the Old Testament reading from Exodus reminds us that true faith requires endurance which Moses illustrates when he directs Joshua into battle against the Amalikites, promising to hold the staff of God in his hands to ensure their victory. As Moses falters from fatigue, God inspires Aaron and Hur to support his hands until the battle has been won. Both these examples speak to the need to sustain a be-lief in God, a willingness to wait and trust that God will reveal himself in the given situation. The Responsorial Psalm reinforces this trust as we proclaim, “The Lord is your guardian; the Lord is your shade; he is beside you at your right hand.” These words galvanize us to live our faith by fulfilling Saint Paul’s directive, “Proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encour-age through all patience and teaching.”

Supporting Our Pilgrims

The last few weeks this space in our parish bulletin has been all about the two dozen members of our parish on pilgrimage to the Marian Shrines of France. A pilgrimage is first and foremost a journey, but more importantly it is a journey centered on prayer. This type of prayer engages the whole being of the person involved – body, mind, heart and soul. And a pilgrimage is not just about those directly involved, it’s about all of the lives connected to each pil-grim. What a perfect connection to some of the most basic truths in life. First, our lives are a journey that is as much about the journey itself, as it is the destination. It’s a journey that must involve every aspect of ourselves – body, mind, heart and soul – in balance. How we journey is as important as to where we journey, lest we arrive at our destination with-out our whole self. Second, to guarantee balance we must be constant in our prayer, remembering that prayer isn’t simply making time to offer words to God, but more importantly making time to allow for a sharing of life. This sharing of life means first listening and being aware of all the ways God wants to share God’s life with us, and then being willing to share our true self with God – being completely honest and holding nothing back. Finally, our journey of life (just like a pilgrimage) is not about ourselves. Everything we do we should do with a conscious knowledge of all the lives that are connected to our life. It’s why, when we pray as Jesus taught us, it’s not “me” centered, it’s always “we” centered: Our Father , give us , forgive us as we forgive others, lead us , deliv-er us. As our brothers and sisters are faithfully bringing our pray-ers with them, offering them to our Merciful Father through the intercession of our Blessed Mother, may we just as faithfully keep them in our daily prayers – trusting that God honors our persistence in prayer. Don’t forget to follow our parish pilgrimage on the OLA Fa-cebook page, or the parish website!

Proposition 62

This election season, the CA bishops have chosen Proposition 62 as their top priority. A yes vote for Prop 62 will abolish the death

penalty in California and in its place give a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis have all stated there is no need for the death penalty in our community. Now is the time for our state to join the growing number of states who have abolished capital punishment. We ask you to prayerfully consider joining the efforts to end the death penalty. incluyendo OLA, en las cinco regiones de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles.
