Home Improvements

Many of us recall the TV sitcom Home Improvement staring Tim Allen who played the character of Tim Taylor, an accident prone host of a Detroit television program who raises a dysfunctional family. The show brought to light the trials of a man raising three mischievous boys with help from his domineering wife and genius neighbor. Like the character Tim who worked to bring improve-ments to his home, each year the parish strives to make improvements to the buildings and grounds in that keeping the facilit ies up to date is an important facet of parish life as it is common to overlook the fact that ongoing maintenance is a major part of overseeing a parish. There is an endless list of maintenance, repairs, and future projects that the parish has on a “to do list.” Like many of you who own houses and maintain the upkeep of a residence through landscaping, preventive maintenance, repairs, and an assortment of renovations, the complex of St. Patrick Church consists of a church building, multiple school buildings, parish center, gymnasium, parish office complex, and priest residence. It is believed that our Pre-K3 building, which was the original church of St. Patrick, is the oldest facility used by any school in the Diocese of Paterson. This past summer brought forth numerous jobs of upkeep to each build-ing so that all areas of the complex are clean and meet safety regulations. Last July the inside of the church was painted to give our worship area a clean, unspoiled look in that much dirt had accumu-lated in the past twenty years. The walls of the church, the narthex area, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the room of reconciliation, and the work sacristy were given a new coat of paint. Most of the work was done during weekdays so that nothing interfered with the weekend schedule of masses as well as summer weddings. In addition to painting the church, the stairs that lead to the balcony and the entire balcony area received new carpeting and floor fixtures. There was much work involved in this process in that all the pews in the balcony had to be removed and replaced. It has become noticeable to most that the new carpeting and flooring has lowered the level of noise from people walking up/down the stairs of the balcony. Additional painting was done in the main school building, which included the principal’s office, the secretarial office, the re-source room, a handful of furniture and shelves, as well as some classrooms in the Middle School. A big effort was made to clear hallways of clutter that accumulated throughout the past years. New desks were also added to a classroom in the Middle School. The old church which is now the home of our Pre-K3 class was also painted in its entirety, and redesigned for a more desirable environ-ment for children and faculty. New fire doors as well as security cameras were also installed throughout the school complex. Repairs were also made in the parish office complex which is located at 41 Oliver Street. This was a two year project that was initiated in the summer of 2015 and completed this summer. Upgrades included new carpeting to all offices and meeting rooms locat-ed on both floors of the building; a new floor fixture was installed in the kitchen, computer area, and stairways that lead to the lower level and second floor offices. The priest residence received a facelift in that the existing kitchen floor, which was ripped apart years ago received new flooring; and the guest restroom, which originated as a bathroom for a live-in housekeeper was refurbished as a restroom for visitors. As I look ahead, ongoing maintenance and repairs in the parish is a necessity as the facilities used by parishioners and stu-dents must be kept safe, clean, and secure. Much planning goes into maintenance so that work is done correctly and reoccurring problems do not develop. Presently there is great need to refurbish the intercom system in the school which is a major expense as well as modernize and freshen up the playground. To put forth a plan for continued maintenance, the finance council has encouraged me to take up an additional collection for buildings and grounds on the last Sunday of each month. I thank you for the ongoing sup-port and generosity given to St. Patrick Church with confidence that this additional revenue will be valuable to the upkeep of our build-ings and grounds. In Christ’s Love, Fr. Bob

2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal

Be Rich in Good Works

As you consider your pledge to the 2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal, it is important to know that the Part-

ners in Faith campaign conducted in 2013 and the Bishop’s Annual Appeal are different drives serving

different needs. The Partners in Faith campaign raised funds for ministries outside the Diocese ’s general

operating funds and included some endowments with an eye toward future needs. The Bishop’s Annual

Appeal, on the other hand, helps fund immediate, day-to-day operations of four important ministries and

programs: Catholic Charities, seminarian education, our diocesan priests’ retirement residence and our

inner-city schools.

With this in mind, please be as generous as possible to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If you have

received the Bishop’s letter, please prayerfully respond today.

through the teachings of Christ and the Church. The program

begins on September 29. Full details and registration form are
