A newsletter for Chipola College Students, Employees, Alumni and Friends Week of July 6- July 19, 2015 Two former Chipola players in MLB All-Star Game Former Chipola College players—Jose Bautista and Russell Martin—were selected to play in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, set for Tuesday, July 14, at 6 p.m. (CST) on FOX. Bautista and Martin were reunited on the Toronto Blue Jays roster this season for the first time since playing together at Chipola in 2000-01. Bautista is a starting outfielder for the Jays, and Martin is the everyday catcher. Chipola baseball coach Jeff Johnson says, “We’re just extremely of proud of these two guys for what they do on and off the field. They are great players with a lot of class. For the fans to select them over and over speaks volumes for the type players they are consistently. They are both proud to be Chipola Indians.” Chipola and Vanderbilt are reportedly the only colleges with two alumni in the All-Star game. Bautista is a six-time All-Star, with the fans selecting him from 2010 to 2015. Bautista led all players in All-Star voting in 2014 and 2013. In the 2010, Bautista became the 26th member of the 50 home run club which includes Babe Ruth, David Ortiz and Mickey Mantle. Bautista led the major leagues in homeruns in 2010 and 2011. He has won two Hank Aaron Awards and two Silver Slugger Awards. Bautista signed a five-year contract worth $65 million in early 2011. During his time in the majors, he has played for the Pirates, the Orioles and the Royals. Bautista played at Chipola before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 20th round of the 2000 draft. His official signing came in 2001, the same year the Indians captured the Panhandle Conference title and second place in the state tournament. Russell Martin is a four-time All-Star (2015, 2011, 2008 and 2007). He was drafted by the Dodgers in 2002 and made his MLB debut in 2006. He spent five years with the LA Dodgers, before moving on to the Yankees. In 2012, he led the Pirates to their first post- season appearance in 21 years. In 2014, Martin signed a five-year, $82 million contract with the Blue Jays where he was reunited with Bautista. Bautista and Martin are both regulars at Chipola’s Alumni Baseball Weekend, an event that helps raise money for the college baseball program and gives local fans a chance to rub elbows with some of the great players in pro baseball. Chipola will offer a small business seminar “Winning with Social Media, Search Engines & Customer Review Websites”, Wednesday, July 15, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., in Room M-108 of the Chipola Business and Technology building (M).
