TWAS Young Affiliates Network

TYAN

Think globally, work professionally

Page 2: TYAN - abc.org.br · Yusuf Baran Cancer geneticist Turkey Partnerships Bolanle Ade Ojokoh Information Scientist Nigeria Communication Patricia Zancan Cancer biologist Brazil Public

• TWAS Young Affiliate (YA) Programme started in 2007, 25 YAs/year nominated by five TWAS Regional Offices

• 10th year; ~250 Young Affiliates/Alumni

• Five-year term; Alumni no longer participate TWAS General Meeting

• Strong vertical links exist (TWAS, TWAS Regional Offices and TWAS YA)

• No horizontal links; many TWAS YA do not know each other

• YA - best young scientists in developing world – how to contribute their motivation, creativity and intelligence?

• TYAN – Young Affiliate 5 years + Alumni 5 years + Life-long link

• Lenovo – 150,000 USD/year; TWAS and CAS highly supportive

Why we need such an initiative

Page 3: TYAN - abc.org.br · Yusuf Baran Cancer geneticist Turkey Partnerships Bolanle Ade Ojokoh Information Scientist Nigeria Communication Patricia Zancan Cancer biologist Brazil Public

• Dynamic groups, highly enthusiastic, active contribution of ideas

• Development of TYAN as a new platform/arm of TWAS and five TWAS Regional Offices: mission, objectives, roles, deliverables, organizational structure, memberships, election, etc

• TYAN Social Responsibilities: increase the visibility of TWAS; partnering with national young academies; capacity building; SDCs – beyond a scientist

• TYAN Scientific Cooperation Opportunities: Research consortia/emerging diseases, climate change, food/water safety, preservation/utilization of biodiversity

• Identify immediate TYAN activities workshops/ symposia/ meetings/ networking, to be planned in 2017

Kick-off TYAN by interactive workshops

2nd TYAN EC meeting in Beijing, June 2017

“TYAN is an innovative initiative in promoting the development of TWAS Young Affiliates, and will play an important role in future growth of TWAS”.

Prof. Chunli BAI, President of TWAS

He advised that TYAN should develop into a network delivering effective collaborations in science & technology, and develop partnerships with research organizations in developed countries to promote south-north cooperation.

Page 15: TYAN - abc.org.br · Yusuf Baran Cancer geneticist Turkey Partnerships Bolanle Ade Ojokoh Information Scientist Nigeria Communication Patricia Zancan Cancer biologist Brazil Public

Strategic thinking for TYAN

• Vision: A world connected by scientific cooperation

• Mission: Catalyze interdisciplinary collaborations to address global challenges

• Mid-long term goal: Become an organization supporting the closure of the gap in science between the developed and developing countries

• Getting more woman scientists and scientists from LDCs connected by TYAN

• Develop ingpartnerships, promote communications, publish science

• Increasing the capacity and the qualifications of YAs and capable young scientists

• Launching specific/ interdisciplinary working groupsin TYAN

• Seeking funding to support TYAN-driven global research initiatives
