DE FARIASAAK: SELFMOORDBRIEF GEVIND
Man toe nie gekaapDESIREÉ RORKE
Dié inligting is nie vroeër bekendgemaak nie.

Inspiring tale of Lucky LucyDESIREÉ RORKE
For Richelle Graham, founder of the LuckyLucy Foundation, there is nothing morebeautiful in life than a severely abused andneglected animal miraculously recoveringto trust human beings again. In fact, for the past three years Richelle
alongwith her employees and volunteers atthe foundation have saved or dramaticallychanged the lives of thousands of destituteanimals in and around Cape Town.A commendable reason for this worthy
foundation to be a beneficiary at this year’sTygerBurger “Cause We Can” charity con-cert, which takes place at the Bellville CivicCentre on 28 July. This concert now in its 11th year, will fea-
ture the likes of Juanita duPlessis, AmandaStrydom, Karen Zoid, Albert Frost, KoosKombuis and many more.It all started in 2010 when Richelle found
a dog tied to a railway line. Trains had goneover her, her leg was severed and she waspregnant. She was rushed to the Market Street Ani-
mal Hospital in Paarl where vets did anemergency operation to try stabilise her.Her mangled right front leg was amputatedbut due to the shock and trauma endured, and theanaesthetic andpainmedicationad-ministered, she lost all her puppies. They named her Lucy, and the newly
formed foundation was named in her hon-our. Since then Lucy has gone through ex-tensive rehabilitation at the Lucky LucyAnimal Shelter, where she slowly adjustedto the amputation.Today she is a very important part of the
Lucky Lucy Foundation’s education drive. She takes trips to schools, so that when
her story is told she can help teach aboutjustice, respect and compassion for all life. The Lucky Lucy Foundation is a non-
profit, pro-life, pro-quality of life organisa-tion that tries to relieve the plight of severe-ly neglected and abused township andstreet animals, but also to socially uplift
and educate destitute and impoverishedchildren and people in and around CapeTown.“Lucky Lucy is an ambassador for the
voiceless. We oppose any form of cruelty toany animal, be it kicking a dog to inhumanemethods of slaughter for human consump-tion,” says Richelle. After three years Richelle stays motivat-
ed to see each and every one of the animalsthey rescue find happiness inwhat she callsa “forever home”.She believes the battle against animal
cruelty and overpopulation in the city canbe won.“My deepest wish is that all like-minded
organisations get together and collaboratebecause only through coalition do I havefaith that it can be done.”Funds and monetary support remain her
biggest challenges, as the foundation staresdown ever-growing vet bills, food bills andstaff salaries. Apart from this, they are con-stantly in need of “adoptive parents” fortheir animals.
“Many people have not yet been reachedto be educated on the effects of backyardbreeding and the facts out there. Peopleneed to know that going to any shelter firstbefore findinga furry companionmight justmean changing the life of that rescued ani-mal forever and there is no better feelingthan that,” she says. They currently have over 180 animals on
the foundation’s farm, ranging from dogsand cats to ducks, chickens and pigs.As Richelle and the team at Lucky Lucy
continues their brave work, her message tothe South African public remains strong.“People should join our network of hun-
dreds of peopleworking tomakeSouthAfri-ca safe andmore humane for all living crea-tures...” she says.Every cent of the proceeds for each ticket
purchased from this organisation for the“Cause we can” concert will go towards theorganisation. Tickets cost R250 and can bepurchased from Kerry-Jean 083 271 8114;Caryn Allen 083 261 4295 or Marcia van Eck081 802 5114.

Houses, clean water and new infrastruc-ture were among the demands made byWallacedene residents at a service deliv-ery protest at the Kraaifontein Civic Cen-tre last Friday. Some 300 protesters took part in a peace-
ful march, which started in Wallacedeneat about 11:00, down Brighton Road to theCivic Centre where a memorandum washanded over to Subcouncil ChairmanGrant Twigg, and Brackenfell Ward Coun-cillor Marian Nieuwoudt.Placard-carrying protesters representa-
tive of the ANC, SACP, and Sanco dancedand chanted freedom slogans, as they ar-rived at the Civic Centre. Here organisersblatantly accused the DA administrationof racism and poor service delivery. In a fervent tirade, provincial secretary
of the SACP Khaya Mayaxa told protest-ers, that the City of Cape Town does notcare for the poorest of the poor of the city.“They only protect the interest of the
people of the former regime…the whitebourgeoisie. The building of houses is notin white interests,” he said.He furthermore accused the DA of not
spending enoughmoney on social housingdevelopment in the Western Cape, sayingthat theANCmet their housing target eve-
ry year, when they were still in power inthe province. He invited officials to come to their
shacks during the rainy season to see howdifficult it is to walk from their shacks tothe toilet facilities. In the memorandum that was signed
and handed over they furthermore de-manded a full-scale investigation into theallocation processes of housing in Phase 1of Wallacedene. They also demanded that the city stop
the bulldozing of new shacks being erectedin the Temporary Relocation Area (TRA),saying it was dehumanising. Moreover, they demanded the land op-
posite Phase 1 to be developed for socialhousing. This protest followed the violent pro-
tests in Wallacedene a fortnight ago, where 17 familieswere threatened to leavetheir RDP houses, 149 trees were uprootedand newly built houses damaged. On Monday, Grant Twigg told Tyger-
Burger that the memorandum was for-warded to theExecutiveMayorPatricia deLille and the different relevant depart-ments of the city.“The bulldozed shacks the protesters re-
ferred to were situated on the TRA, landownedby the city specifically for residentsto live on while waiting for houses,” said
Twigg.According to him residents of the TRA
are well aware of the fact that new struc-tures cannot be erected on this land.“We are currently in the process, and
have been for some time, to structure theTRA in such away to improve the serviceswe render there. If the current residentscontinue to allow new structures to beerected on the land, our plans to improveservices such as roads for instance willcontinuously be hindered,” he said.“We will continue to demolish illegal
structures in the TRA,” he said.“Even if we can procure the new land re-
ferred to for building more houses, thenormal allocation processes will be fol-lowed to allocate houses. That means us-ing the current housing list, I agree thatthere are a few discrepancies in the alloca-tion processes that have to be investigatedand that is currently being done,” he said.Spokesperson for PatriciaDeLille, Solly
Malatsi, told TygerBurger that the May-or’s office will respond to the memoran-dum as soon as they have studied it.“The City of Cape spends more than
57 % of its budget on direct service deliv-ery in poor areas. The city provides themost extensive basket of basic services topoor residentsmore than any other city inthe country.”

Christina Kleinhans, ook ’n slagoffer, be-
seer is.
Ao.
kom.Andries Pieterse sê op die webwerf hello-
peter: “Hulle het so baiemense al ingedoen.Dit is ’n belaglike situasie. Ek is ‘in diens’geneem as ’n opvoeder vir die maatskappy.Maar hulle het R42 000 van vier haarkap-perstudente gesteel. Die studente het nooitopleiding of toerusting ontvang nie.”Hygaanvoort dat hyvanmeer as 30 ander
studente gehoor het wat “ingedoen” is.

Two Scottsdene primary schools havestarted with an etiquette programme forgirls. The programme will attempt tobring good etiquette back to the top of thecommunity’s priority list.
Councillor Grant Twigg has initiated anetiquette programme for Grade 5 girls inScottsdene, Kraaifontein. It is held inParkdene and Cavalleria primaryschools.
The initial programme, which startedon Saturday 15 June, will run over a peri-od of six months until November.
The young girls will be educated in dif-ferent aspects of general etiquette by a se-lection of organisations.
The programme will attempt to changethe attitudes of young school girls. “Wewant girls to become real ladies again,”states Grant.
City Health will help educate the girlson basic health tips. These tips will con-cern personal hygiene and how to besttake care of it. Sports and Recreation willteach the girls different ways of maintain-ing a fit and healthy body. The activities
will also help lift their self esteem. There will also be reading and writing
lessons to ensure that the girls’ basic edu-cation is up to standard.
A final aspect of the programme willconcern personal safety. This will providebasic safety tips that will be useful bothinside and outside of the Scottsdene area.
Twigg started the programme when herealised that the attitudes of Scottsdenegirls left space for improvement. His goalis to influence the girls at a young age withvalues that will help them throughouttheir lives.
Twigg says that the bigger motivationbehind the programme is to change theway people see Scottsdene residents.
“With all the gangsterism in the area,Scottsdene has many negative connota-tions. With this programme we want to getrid of them,” says Twigg.
Although the programme is starting outas a six month project, it is set for a three-year term.
The programme will expand to includegirls in Grade 6 and 7.

“Die aanbieding was baie geslaag.

The draft regulations for the restriction ofthe use of blue lights and sirens (Draft Regu-lations on Restrictions on the Use of LampsEmitting a Blue Light and Use of Sirens),were published in the Provincial Govern-ment Gazette on Friday 21 June and are openfor public comment for a period of 30 daysthereafter. During this time, members of thepublic are encouraged to submit written rep-resentations or objections on the proposedregulations.Section 2 of the draft regulation states that,
unless there is an imminent identified threatregarding the safety or life of the office bear-er or VIP; or there is a threat of damage tothe property of the office bearer or VIP; “ apersonmaynot operate or instruct any otherperson to operate –
VAmotor vehicle inwhich an office beareror VIP is being transported; or
VAmotor vehicle escorting or accompany-ing a motor vehicle referred to in (a), on apublic road while –
V An intermittently flashing blue light isbeing emitted from a lamp fitted to that mo-tor vehicle; or
V A siren fitted to that motor vehicle is be-ing used.”“This regulation is in line with the Nation-
al Road Traffic Act, enabling office bearersand VIPs to make use of vehicles fitted withblue lights and sirens. We have seen the
abuse of blue light brigades by said officebearers and VIPs in the past, tantamount toa disregard for the rule of law and a threatto the safety of other road users. As per thedraft regulations, office bearers and VIPsmay not make use of blue lights or sirens ontheir vehicles or vehicles escorting them, un-less the situation is one that constitutes acase of emergency,” said Minister Carlisle.“Failure to comply with this regulation
would result in the office bearer or VIP beingsubject to a fine or imprisonment. We cannotcontinue to have the safety of other road us-ers threatened unnecessarily by the use ofblue lights and sirens in non-emergency situ-ations,” added Carlisle.Interested parties are invited tomake their
submissions on the regulation within 30days of publication, by post to:The Head of the DepartmentAttention: c/o Mr ML WattersWestern Cape Department of Transport

He was supposed to be out for less than aminute. But 16 years later, his parents arestill waiting for Matthew Ohlson to walkthrough the front door.If he should do so, it will be as a 25-year-
old man.Hisparentshaven’t seenhimsincehedis-
appeared on 24 March 1997. The then nine-year-old boy had gone into the street out-side his home to collect the dirtbin.Statistics reveal that a child goesmissing
every six hours in South Africa, accordingto the Bureau of Missing Children. In the Western Cape, most missing chil-
dren cases are reported in Mitchells Plain,Nyanga and Delft, police officials confirm. While the number of children reported
missing has decreased over the years, inci-dents of children who have still not beenfound in the province have increased.Last year, 164 children were reported
missing in the province. Of these, 147 werefound, while 16 families are yet to gain clo-sure as the whereabouts of their little onesremain unknown. This year alone 58 children have already
been reported missing in theWestern Capeandonly 42 of themhavebeenreunitedwiththeir families.Matthew’s mother Michelle Ohlson de-
scribes her ordeal as a long journey withfew answers.“It never gets easier; you just learn how
to better deal with the situation,” she says.Michelle remembers her second eldest
son as being extremely inquisitive and al-ways trying to help fix appliances.TheOhlsonshave sincemoved from their
Westridge home in a bid to make a freshstart for the sake of their three other chil-dren.“But I don’t know how to put this behind
me. I will never stop having faith that heis still out there. While other people willstop looking for your child, as a parent younever give up.”The experience has urged her to reach
out to other parents in the same situation. The Ohlsons started Concerned Parents
ofMissingChildren, an organisationwhichhelps families come to termswith the disap-pearance of a loved one.The group also assists in tracing the per-
son’s whereabouts.“I do it because easing the pain of other
mothers comforts me,” she explains.New cases arrive on the desks of chil-
dren’s organisations daily. As the school holidays see children run-
ning around unattended in search of excite-ment and adventure, parents are urged tokeep constant tabs on the whereabouts oftheir offspring. The most important point to remember
is to report your child missing as soon aspossible. There are no waiting periods, Pink La-
dies director Dessie Rechner stresses.“Immediately report a missing person to
the police and contact Pink Ladies whowillassist the police in finding the missing per-son,” she urges.Toprevent themfromdisappearing in the
first place, Pink Ladies spokesperson Lou-ise Botha encourages guardians to knowtheir children’s comings and goings at alltimes.“Parents should know their children’s
friends and really involve themselves intheir child’s life.”There are no easy answers on dealing
with the trauma of a child who has been ab-ducted, says Trauma Centre director Valdivan Reenen-Le Roux.Reaching closure is a personal process
which may never become a reality, she ex-plains.“At best, parents can be supported by fo-
cusing on practising positive, appropriatecoping mechanisms. It is important to seekthe assistance of a psychologist for supportin coming to terms with a missing child.”Gnawing uncertainty further retards
healing.“Theymay continuehoping the childwill
return and will be hesitant to make lifechanges that would make it difficult for thechild to find them...it is crucial to use theservices of a psychologist,” she says.

SLICE OF LIFE
Help our furryfriends livebetter livesThey are man’s best friends and love usunconditionally, yet too often the animalsin our communities are neglected andabused. These animals end up in one of the
many animal shelters who rescue andrehome unwanted and abused animals. The Lucky Lucy Foundation, one of the
beneficiaries of this year’s ’Cause we Cancharity concert, is one such organisation.
The drive to encourage pet lovers toadopt rescues rather than buy pets, remains a difficult one. While The Lucky Lucy Foundation
believes in education and sterilisation, rather than euthanasia, the harsh realityis that the overpopulation of sheltersmeans some animals who don’t find their“forever home” face the risk of beingeuthanised.By adopting a furry companion, you
will be saving a life, and in the process, you might just find yourself changed. There are plenty of studies outlining
the benefits of animals as social andemotional support and according to theResearch Centre for Human/Animalinteraction at the University of MissouriCollege of Veterinary Medicine interact-ing with animals can increase Oxytocin, which helps us feel happy.Of course, there are those of us unable
to offer the space an animal needs, butthat doesn’t mean we can’t help.Small financial contributions and
donations of food and pet products arealways welcome. Every little bit helps toimprove conditions for the animals.

The STAG Student Lodge company has re-cently completed its very popular andworld-class student accommodationproject, a pioneering green alternative resi-dence at the University of Stellenbosch’sTygerberg Medical Campus.
According to Michelle Groenewald,STAG maintenance manager, given all thepositive feedback she has received so far,the students seem to be very happy with thenew building.
She says the enviromentally conciousbuilding is more spacious, eco-friendly andthe green element has definitely been wel-comed by students.
Groenewald says the only complaints shehas received about the new student accom-modation were about the energy saving in-duction stove, which has no oven for bak-ing.
According to John Schooling, chief exec-utive officer of STAG Student Lodge, stu-dent accommodation needed a fresh ap-proach that puts the student at the centreof the design process.
He says STAG responded effectively tothe growing demand for a more efficientand cost-effective student accommodationsolution and have made some radical prod-uct innovations to the new residence.
“We wanted an optimal architectural de-sign that ensured every square metre of thebuilding was designed specifically for theneeds of the student,” said Schooling.
“So, we placed the student at the centreof the design process and for everything wedid, we asked the question: ‘How does thisaffect the student?’”
Schooling says, firstly, the design of theresidences needed to better reflect the stu-dents’ living requirements.
Secondly, he says, they decided that tra-ditional brick and mortar constructiontook too long and was too expensive formost universities.
Schooling says he explored a number ofbuilding methods with two things in mind:it needed to cost less and be time effective.
“Historically, the cost of student accom-
modation was very expensive. The nationalnorm is around R240 000 per bed. That wasunaffordable.
“So we looked around for a method thatwas not only cheaper than bricks and mor-tar, but better and which we could apply tothe South African context,” says Schooling.
The company found the answer in light-weight steel structure technology that firstemerged in the 1950s, but is now the domi-nant means of construction worldwide.STAG has been using the technology inSouth Africa for more than five years now.
“We design to what we call a ‘rational de-sign code’ and municipal planning depart-ments have no problem with it. The newresidence at the Stellenbosch University’sTygerberg Campus, which hosts the Facul-ty of Medicine and Health Sciences, took 30days to get through council,” says School-ing.
Schooling says there are various other ti-me saving efficiencies with the new design.
“We can build in 60% of the time it wouldnormally take to build using bricks andmortar.
“The building took five months to com-plete, but it would have taken another sixmonths if we’d used normal constructionmethods,” says Schooling.
He says time is the most expensive com-modity, and when you save time you savemoney. He says the innovative technologyhas made its mark and is destined to beco-me the dominant building method.
“Our standard approach is that our buil-dings must be as green as possible.
“We install heat pumps that reduce elec-trical use by 35 %, or we use a combinationof heat pumps and solar panels that can re-duce electricity use by as much as 80 %. Wealso use LED lights throughout,” he says.
Schooling says a combination of inertiaand set-in-one’s-way thinking contributedto the slow adoption of the technology.
“It is time and cost effective, very green, maintenance is minimal and it generatesvery little waste. Over the next five yearsthis type of construction will take off.”

There’s no stopping Korff’s records
Lukas Korff, also known as Miracle Cuzzy, broke 13 world records since doctors told him hewould never walk again. One of these records was broken when he did a spinathon on top ofan 18-storey high rise crane for six hours (without a seat on the bike). This year he willattempt to break various new records, such as reading aloud the whole New Testament in 17hours.
ANDRÉ BAKKES
This year a pastor from Table Viewwill aimtobreakeightworld records, organise amas-sive flashmoband, quite astonishingly, readthe entire New Testament in one sitting. That wasn’t a typo. What’s more, he will be reading the NewTestament to ahip-hopbeat that schoolchild-ren fromall over Cape Townwill be beatbox-ing.Durbanville school kids are apparentlykeener than anyone.LukasKorff (akaMiracleCuzzy) is ultima-tely trying to spread the Word of God in away that teenagers can relate to.
In order to raise funds and create awa-reness of this massive undertaking, Korffwill hold a series of astounding feats to gowith his previous world records. On 12 July hewill be attempting a “Beat-Box Ultra Marathon” for 10 hours; on 13July he will be trying to break the MittBoxing Speed World Record; on 29 July hewill go for the “most catches of a golf ballat 100 metres” (which is currently six); af-ter which he will be attempting a BoxingMitt Ultra Marathon of 10 hours on 31 Au-gust; the fastest roundof golf (with a putternonetheless!) on 30 September; the most100 metre chips on a golf course on 4 Octo-ber; and finally the most 100 metre putts
on 17 October.Lo and behold, on 26 October he will be rea-ding the New Testament in 17 hours! The “who, what, where and when” are theeasy parts. The real question is the “why”.Korff has a ready made answer for this one:“I was the drug addict. I was themanwho sup-plied drugs to my friends. I was the violent, alcoholic, idiot. Then I hadmy experience,myencounter... My miracle. I was in a car acci-dent in Johannesburg and the doctor said Iwill never walk again. I literally wasted awayon a bed of sheep skins. Then I made a dealwith God when I asked him to heal me and,in turn, I will make a change in the lives ofothers.”He started his journey on the road of re-demptionwhen he became a pastor, but it wasonly after the tragic death of his first wife.“She had cystic fibrosis – a long and disgus-ting disease. And then in 2006 she passedaway. The next year I hid under covers, sleep-ing, drinking, on anti-depressants and then in2008 it was the Argus.”“People kept telling me, ‘C’mon. You said ifyou stand for nothing you fall for anything.Take a stand!’,” remembers Korff. The inspirational pastor then completed theArguswhile ridingonabicyclewithout a seat.
He laughs.“I stood the entire route!”Since then he has broken 13 jaw-droppingworld records, such as sinking the longestputt (115 metres), punching a speed bag forover 26 hours, and the fastest round of golfwith just a putter in 42 minutes (he hit a 250metre drive that day!)All these are impressive, but if he can ma-nage to read the whole New Testament inone sitting, with the force and conviction ofan energetic rapper, then it would probablytake the cake.Korff gave a demonstration to TygerBur-
ger, but one should really hear it. How doyou write to the beat of a hip-hopping beat-box?“The in-hab-itants of Je-richo where per-
ver-ted with sin-and-corrupt, surrounded bya wall so-thick-that chariots raced on top...”Korff wants people to donate funds in or-der to give audio Bibles to kids from 100schools nationally. There are even people from Pakistan andSouthKoreawho have expressed an interestin the project.A portion of the money raised will also goto the Gen-X Youth Centre. To get in touch with Korff go to his pageon Facebook or contact him on 061 014 0988.

O ne evening in April 2006 TableView’s Deon van Zyl made a decisionthat would change his life forever.
Hewas onhisway to akaraokebar inWestPalmBeach, Florida, whenadrunkendrivershattered his dreams.“Obviously I don’t remember what hap-pened that night, butwhenever Iwent to thisplace I either went over the bridge or underthe bridge. That night I decided to go overthe bridge,” says Deon. Some 21 days later and he woke up in ahospital bed.Deonwas told hewas in amotorcycle acci-dent and that he broke his spine. His dream of becoming a chef slowly evap-orated before his eyes. From that day onhis optimistic goalswerereplaced by simply staying optimistic.Full of apprehension he returned to SouthAfrica with a string of if-only nightmares onhis trail.Deon rebuilt his life, met his wife and fa-thered two children, but the desire to be-come a chef still burned silently within. A
dream he believes is still within his reach.“My friends and family will tell you thatmy signature dish is my lamb shank,”laughs Deon.TygerBurger interviewed him this week-end to hear how he manages to stay focusedon the silver lining while the cloud of life-long paralysis hangs over him.“I want to be successful in whatever I pur-sue, but now my family comes first. Beingable to support them and keep them happyis enough!”Henow thrives in his job in the office auto-mation industry and doesn’t let his disabili-ty stand between him and happiness. He originally travelled to the USA viaWorkaway International and in his shorttime there as a chef he quickly establishedhimself as an extraordinary talent. Were it not for that one night in 2006 whenhe chose to drive across the bridge and notunder it, he might have pursued his dream. But he would not have met his wife, Lee-Ann, and fathered his two beautiful, amaz-ing children.Deon has an infectious lust for life and isclearly a born optimist.
He may also have missed the chance to besuch an inspiration to others.Says Charlotte Quenet-Meintjes, Head ofWorkaway International South Africa: “Ihave never met anyone quite like Deon be-fore. He is one of themost fantastic individu-als and its clear that he never lets anythingget him down.”It was so unfortunate and dreadful to hearabout Deon’s accident, but the way he hascome out on the other side by taking every-thing in his stride is phenomenal, Charlotteadds.“We wish him all the best in his future en-deavours and find it absolutely heart-warm-ing that he has not let his disability definewho he is and what he can do.”Deon spoke for a long time about his ad-venture in America at five star countryclubs andhowhe eventually triumphedoverunexpected challenges. It isn’t always easy, but a positive outlookis serving him well.Yet, sometimes, just for amoment, hewon-ders how things would be today if he choseto take the road leading under the bridge in-stead of across it that night in 2006..

The cold and inclement winter weather overthe next few months will force people to con-stantly seek ways of keeping warm, such asusing warming devices like heaters and bra-zier fires.
If not monitored properly, these devicescan and often do, result in residential fires.
According to the city’s Fire and Rescueservices, they have responded to a total of1 124 residential fires since the beginning ofthis year.
Half of these fires were in informal settle-ments resulting in 2 442 structures being de-stroyed and the deaths of 49 people including12 children.
These fires occurred mostly in: Khayelit-sha, Mitchells Plain, Gugulethu, Philippi,
Strand, Kraaifontein and Atlantis. In almost all of these incidents the fires
could have been avoided and were causeddue to negligence in the use of cooking appli-ances, heating and other electrical devices.
The public should also keep in mind thatcigarettes, matches and lighters, candles, electrical faults, heating and cooking appli-ances and equipment such as electric blan-kets canall behazardous. The city’s Fire andRescue Services will continue to focus theirFire Safety Education efforts on the areasmost prone to structural fires.V Report all fires by dialling 107 from a landline or021 480 7700 from a cellphone. Top of the world to fight dreaded TB
Leigh Rynhoud willbe climbingKilimanjaro to raisefunds for theBrooklyn ChestHospital.
ANDRÉ BAKKES
What does suffering from tuberculosis(TB) and climbingKilimanjarohavein common?
While scaling the highest free-standingmountain in the world at 5 895 metres onemight experience shortness of breath, nau-sea and hallucinations.
These are just some of the symptoms andside effects of TB and its treatment.
A clinical psychologist of Brooklyn ChestHospital, Leigh Rynhoud (40), will attemptto conquer the mountain in September andraise funds for the hospital, which dealswith this deadly and serious disease.
The Bothasig resident says that the fundswill be used for two projects, namely for visi-tor transport and a work-skills project.
Support“I know how important support from the
patient’s family is and some of them cannotafford to come for a visit. As for the work-skills project, some of the reasons why peo-ple end up getting TB include not eatinghealthily or not looking after themselves ap-propriately. To just release them fromhospi-tal and put them in the same situation aftera year of fighting the illness doesn’t help. They must learn something new,” she ex-plains.
The hospital treats about 250 patients whosuffer from Extremely Drug Resistant TB(XDR-TB).
In Rynhoud’s professional capacity shefaces a proverbial Kilimanjaro every day.
She has to motivate patients who are star-ing death in the face.
Motivation“During therapy I would sometimes tell
the patient to look at Table Mountain. Iwould say: ‘You can’t wish yourself to the
top. All you can do is try. And even whileyou walk around the hospital grounds, ifthat is your training for climbing it, it is stilltraining for climbing that mountain’,” con-tinues Rynhoud.
So, in order to raise funds and motivateher patients, she has decided to climb Kili-manjaro.
“It could take a patient up to a year to over-come TB, so my journey started on TB Dayon 25 March and will end a year later,” shesays.
DonationsRynhoud will be paying for the trip her-
self, so all the money raised will go straightto the hospital.
The success of her journey doesn’t dependon her preparations or her conviction, buton people out there donating money for agood cause.
According to her, people gladly donatemoney for cancer or HIV/Aids, but they arenot so considerate when it comes to TB.
One of these reasons, according to Ryn-houd, is that people tend to underestimatethe disease. Which leads to the question, how serious is TB really?
She sums up the problem in her blog(www.kileighmanjarovstb.blogspot.com):“According to the WHO, approximately 8,7million people became ill with TB in 2011,1,4 million people died and 10 million chil-dren were left orphaned after their parentssuccumbed to this disease worldwide. It isestimated that in the 22 high burden coun-tries there are 10 million people living withactive TB. Sub-Saharan Africa has the high-est proportion of new cases per populationin the world. In 2011 it was estimated by thatthere were nearly 30 000 people in the CapeTown metro suffering from TB.”V To donate go to www.tbhivcare.org and click ondonate and then on the Kileighmanjaro.vs.TB link.

Born in Bellville and bred in Durbanville,Benurita Phillips is a living modern dayMother Theresa.
Having grown up in difficult circum-stances, Benurita’s upbringing played amajor role in the person she is today.
She currently resides in Eerste Riverand offers shelter to more than 14 childrenwho show up on her doorstep daily.
The youngest is two years old. This has encouraged her to embrace acts
of unselfish love and caring, dipping intoher own cupboards and pocket, ensuringthat each and every hungry stomach getsa warm meal.
“This is how I grew up, I did not have theluxury back then which I have now,” saidBenurita.
She regularly “adopts” children, withthe help of the police, providing shelter tochildren who have strayed from home.
Many have been exposed to the foul andvile nature of drugs and alcohol.
“It’s a very heartbreaking sight to see.Ican only be thankful that my own childrenare not exposed to this,” she said.
Her house is in a constant whirlwind ofuntidiness and all of the children addressher as “Mom”.
She recalls fond memories of her grand-daughter, Cleo Phillips (6), constantly ask-ingwhy she is not allowed to playwith chil-dren her grandmother allows in the house.
She is hardly influenced by the negativecomments passed by neighbours and pas-sers-by. Cleo however indulges in the richfriendship andmutual companionship sheshares with her gran.
“Children are my weakness,” she said. Her family, daughter Claudia and son
Luan are extremely supportive of the gooddeeds which their mother has carried out.
“They accept it, as it is. Sometimes I lashout at them but they understand becausethis is how they were taught and broughtup,” she says.
Benurita, a former nurse at a privatehospital in Durbanville endured a life
changing experience in 1994, after an acci-dent left her with a severe shoulder injuryand constant limp.
The then 17-year-old said: “As the acci-dent happened, I should have been dead, but it has changed my life for good.”
Benurita is a Personal Assistant at theStellenbosch Universiteit Sentrum virPedagogie (SUNSEP).
Her work colleagues chip in by bringingclothes, food and other necessary itemswhich she hands to the children bloomingon her doorstep.
“I want to give others, that which I did
not have when I was a child. To see the fac-es of the children, is a big enough ‘thankyou’ for me,” Benurita said.
Her first initial reaction was: “Not whatI expected. It’s not what I wanted, it’s thefaces of the children which is important,”she said.
She acknowledges the impact which un-employment has on parents in the EersteRiver community.
“There are many children walking
around aimlessly but any child ismy child.I am prepared to walk a journey withthem,” she says.
Benurita has been approached by socialworkers numerous times, encouraging herto look after more children.
“There is a tremendous need in the com-munity,” she pleads.
In five years’ time, she hopes to buildmore rooms to allow more space for par-ents to come and live with their children.V If anyone would like to donate food, clothes, orany other goods. contact Benurita on 072 118 6342or 021 808 3483.

“It’s actually who I am,” he says, adding:“I’m very passionate about being on stage.”While Emo has been in the Afrikaans en-tertainment industry for about five years, hewas always performing. Therewasno epiph-any or decisive moment that pushed him to-wards his career choice. He jokingly points out that he doesn’tthink he had a choice in the matter, he saysinstead; his dad forcedhim into entertainingwith Malay choirs and “Kaapse Klopse”.“One thing led to another and now we aresitting here today,” he says.Emo is known for his hilarious stage pres-ence, which sometimes includes pullingsome funny faces.“I don’t think pulling faces was intention-al, it came over time,” Emo says, sayingagain that he just wants to entertain people. His dancing is another thing that keepsaudiences entertained. “I don’t think any-one taught me to dance, it was a case of imi-tating people,” Emo says.“If Michael Jackson’s on the TV, then youwanted to be like Michael Jackson,” Emosays, adding: “All the good movers and theiconic guys like JamesBrown, were the guysI liked.”
’Cause we CanThen of course there was his involvementwith the Malay choirs and “Kaapse Klopse”which also helped.Emo is one of the artists who continuallysupport TygerBurger’s ’Cause we Can con-certs by performing for free at the show eve-ry year.“I perform at ’Cause we Can every year, because I can, and I want to,” he says.
“With success comes responsibility andthat means you eventually have to help oth-er people,” Emo explains. “It’s all about car-ing and sharing,” he adds.“We do a lot of charities throughout theyear, ‘CauseweCan is just oneof them,”Emosays, adding that he feels that it’s his socialresponsibility to give back.Emowill be at Die Boer this weekwith hisband, Take Note.Emo says the smaller audiences and thespace to test new material are among thethings that make performing at Die Boerspecial.“For me, Die Boer is one of those thingsin your career you just have to do,” he says, adding: “It’s just one of those places with alegacy.”When he isn’t on stage elsewhere, Emo isworkingwith one of his new projects, his All
Star Theatre in Brackenfell.“It was a dream,” Emo says of the theatre. With no help from investors, Emo saved tobe able to open the theatre himself.
Legacy“Like Die Boer, I want to provide a plat-form that can become a legacy for other art-ists.” He wants the theatre to be a space fornew performers as well as more establishedname.Emo and his band, Take Note, do morethan 250 shows a year. He says his businessside, like working with the theatre and withother artists and his involvementwith hous-ing developments is what keeps him sane.“The entertainment industry is becomingoverwhelming, so you have to find otherways to give energy to and focus on,” Emoexplains.

TYGERBURGER | BRACKENFELLWoensdag, 3 Julie 2013
SAREL BURGER
derblom, Migale Dawood, Nathier April (al-mal Jan Kriel-skool), Matthew Alexander,Keanen Parnell, JasonWessels, LoganMoos(almal Westcliff) en Henwille Cleophas (DeGrendel).Voorts is Herman Venter (De Grendel) be-
noem as as die LSOB-verteenwoordiger bydie Akademieweek, terwyl Riaan le Sueur(Westcliff) as een van die SA span se afrig-ters aangewys is.
Tygerbergers maak stem dik
SAREL BURGER
sche Kloof/Walmer, Goodwood t Kuilsri-vier, Hands & Heart t Villager.

Cape Town’s club rugby leagues are setfor an overhaul next season when thecurrent format of the competition will
be scrapped. The Western Province Rugby Football Un-
ion (WPRFU) currently runs eight differentleagues of 10 teams each, with the top twogaining promotion to a higher league eachyear. The bottom two teams are relegated.
However, as of next year the top 45 clubsin the region will be split into three different15-team groups – A, B and C – as part of thesame “Premier Competition”.
The clubs seeded from 46-78 on the rank-ings will be divided into three different re-gional competitions, in the “Northern”,“Southern” and “City” Leagues.
The change in format has received con-trasting reactions from some of the city’sbiggest clubs. Michael Reynolds, chairper-son of South Africa’s oldest club, Hamil-ton’s, says he is against the change.
“It takes us away from the strength versusstrength (competition). Maties already beatthe lower sides in the Super League A by 80
points and now there are five sides that areweaker than the bottom sides in the league,”he says.
WeaknessReynolds adds that the new competition’s
other weakness is that teams will only playeach other once in the league stage, beforethe top six sides advance to knockoutrounds.
“The structure now – strength versusstrength, home and away – is the only wayit can work. That’s a true reflection. Youplay home and away, no excuses.”
The knockout phase of the competitionwill be similar to Super Rugby, with the toptwo in each group advancing to semi-finals,while teams placed three to six will face offin quarter-finals to determine the other twosemi-finalists.
Teams placed from seventh to 14 in thegroups will advance to a “Top Eight” knock-out competition, with quarter-finals, semisand a final.
Although the top two and bottom twoteams in each group will still be promotedand relegated, the promotion/relegation for-
mat has also changed. The third-placed teamin each league, expect Group A of the “Pre-mier Competition”, will face off against the13th-placed team in the lower league, withthe winner gaining promotion.
Chairperson of Primrose RFC, FaghierGamieldien, says the inclusion of a knock-out element is one of the primary reasons hevoted for the tournament.
“If you are in fourth place in Super LeagueB and you know you cannot be promoted ordemoted then what are you playing for?” hesays.
Opportunity“Every year you find Maties or the other
big clubs winning the Super League A. Thenew structure gives the other clubs a chanceto win the league. It gives everyone an oppor-tunity to win.”
The regional leagues will take a similarformat, with the 11 teams in each leagueplaying the other sides in their league onlyonce.
The top three from each league will thenadvance to a combined league competition,to play a single round of matches to find an
ultimate winner.Teams placed from four to 11 will play an-
other round of games in their respectiveleagues.
Although the competition as a whole drewconflicting responses from the variousclubs, everyone agreed that a major down-side was the fact that the second, third or un-der-20 team competitions will not have aknockout competition.
Dr Nasief van der Schyff, Collegians RFCjunior vice-president, says the length of theseason could have socio-economic impactson some clubs.
“In the new format each team is guaran-teed only 14 games, while we are currentlyguaranteed 18 games,” he says.
“For a club like Collegians, which usesrugby as an alternative to gangsterism anddrugs, it may result in us not playing enoughrugby and putting players at risk of some ofthe socio-economic problems.”
Danny Jones, WPRFU general manager ofamateur rugby, declined the opportunity tocomment on the new structures, saying theunion was still in the process of finalisingsome aspects of it.
