Excellent investigation by two detectivesled to the arrest of four robbery suspects.On Sunday 22 November a woman was
walking in Caledon Street, Goodwoodwhen a white Toyota Avanza stoppednext to her. Four suspects jumped out,two pointed firearms at her and robbedher of her Samsung cellphone. The victimmanaged to write down the registrationnumber and reported the incident toGoodwood police.On Monday Constable Bongani Nkom-
bisa and Constable Mzimasi Ngcukanawent to Nyanga taxi rank in an effort to
trace the Avanza. There they found thevehiclewith the owner,who informed themembers that his vehiclewasused by oneof his employees on that day. The mem-bers were taken to the employee andwhen they searched him, they found thevictim’s cell phone in his possession.Their investigation took them to NewCross Roads where the other three sus-pects were arrested and two plastic fire-arms were confiscated.The suspects, aged 20, 21, 23 and 38 ap-
peared in the Goodwood Magistrate’sCourt on a charge of armed robbery.

A neighbour’s vigilance helped the policecapture twoburglars inWimbledonWay inEdgemead.According to police spokesperson War-
rant Officer Jacques Mostert, the neigh-bour called the police after seeing the twosuspects climb through a window. “War-rant Officer Dean Newman and ConstableJonathan Kriel were doing patrols whenthey were informed about a burglary inprogress. Themembers rushed to the sceneand when they arrived they saw two sus-pects leave the residence through a win-dow. When the suspects saw the police,they tried to flee on foot, jumping overboundary walls in their effort to evade thetwo policemen who were hot on theirheels,” says Mostert.At this time themembers were joined by
a worker for a security company. “Whenhe saw what was happening he jumped into help, and with his assistance the mem-bers managed to corner both suspects andarrest them,” says Mostert.The two suspects, 24 and 18, from Old
CrossRoads andPhilippi,were arrested ona charge of burglary and will appear in theGoodwood magistrate’s court.The station commander, Lieutenant Col-
onel Patrick Jacobs, praised everyone in-volved for the arrest but had special praisefor the neighbour who called the police.“As a result of the neighbour’s quick ac-
tions, the suspects didnothave time to takeany property and were arrested with onlya sharpened screwdriver in their posses-sion.“This is the type of vigilance residents

Goodwood police would like to sensitisethe community about an old scheme thatis surfacing again.
According to information three mendriving a white Mazda and a white FordFiesta pose as police officers. They are inpossession of false police appointment
certificates.Their modus operandi is to approach
their victims, asking for their bank cardsto verify it.
They tell their victims – mostly womenand elderly people – that they are investi-gating card fraud.
As soon as the cards are handed over itis placed inside a brown envelope and thesuspects would then get into their vehi-cles to “test” the cards. After the so-calledtesting, they would return the envelope tothe victim, who would then find a pieceof newspaper inside the envelope insteadof their cards.
The police asked the community to bevigilant and to report these incidents.

The City awarded its bravest and mostheroic officers at its annual Safety andSecurity awards ceremony last Thurs-
day.The event pays tribute to those staff mem-
bers who went above and beyond the call ofduty to protect the public.The awards were handed out to staff
across the directorate’s departments, in-cluding Metro Police, Traffic Services, FireandRescue Services, LawEnforcement, Dis-aster Risk Management and the 107 PublicEmergency Communication Centre.Categories included outstanding service,
supervisor of the year, bravery, departmentof the year and officer of the year.Of all the winners, quite a few of the offi-
cers are situated in the northern suburbs,such as Justin McKay and Monrico Cloetefrom Law Enforcement stationed at Parow,who were each honoured in the category forbravery.“The officers were on foot patrol in the
Bellville CBD when they heard peoplescreaming and saw twomen running away,”according to a City statement. “They gavechase and caught the suspects. The officersalso recovered two firearms. At the policestation theywere informed that the suspects

Metro Policewere also awarded for bravery.The officers were on their way to the Atlan-tis office on Sunday 11 October around 07:30when they received a call about a bunducourt along Vanguard Drive. Theymanaged to get the two victimsaway from the mob, that was armed withpangas, whips and stones.Senior traffic officer Nizaam Alexander,
stationed at the Goodwood Traffic Centre,was awarded as departmental officer of theyear. “In the first sixmonths of 2015hewrote4 297 fines. He arrested 14 motorists fordrunken driving, reckless and negligentdriving, fraud cases and drug arrests,” ac-cording to the statement. “He suspended 48vehicles and impounded 95 cellphones. He isvery competent in what he does, dedicatedand one of the hardest working officers inarea North.” Alexander was also nominatedat themidyear award ceremony after he andhis partner recovered a vehicle that hadbeen hijacked in Belhar.The commander of the Metro Police’s K9
unit based in Parow, Joan Felix, was alsoawarded as departmental officer of the year.“The K9 unit has gone from strength to
strengthunderher command. She is respect-ed by her peers and themembers in her unit

The Goodwood Ratepayer’s Association(GRA)welcomed the City of Cape Town’s an-nouncement that the Tygerdal dumping sitewill not be closed before the new one in Bea-convale is completed.Ernest Sonnenberg, the City’s Mayco
member for utility services, made the an-nouncement on Monday.The GRA and the City have been at logger-
heads for many years since it was an-nounced that the site will be closed.Neville Hitchcock, chairperson of the
GRA, says they worked tirelessly to get theCity to change its mind. “If we had our way,the site will not be closed at all. It was built
for thepeople ofGoodwoodand is anecessityfor the town. It will be open for a long timestill as nowork has been done at the Beacon-vale site,” says Hitchcock.According to Sonnenberg’s statement the
decision was taken due to opposition to thefacility’s closure that was expressed bymembers of the GRA who appealed.“The process of commissioning the re-
placement facility in Beaconvale is under-way. A waste management license has beenawarded by the Department of environmen-tal affairs and development planning(DEADP) for the development and operationof a facility at theBeaconvale site. The entireprocess is estimated to take approximately24 months.“The decision to close the Tygerdal facili-

A new study by the University of Cape Townhas found a clear link between exposure totrauma and chronic health and mental con-ditions among South Africans.
This study, using data from the South Af-rican Stress and Health Study (Sash), foundthat exposure to trauma had a direct linkto arthritis, cardiovascular and respiratorydisease, chronic pain and mental illnesssuch as anxiety.
Research leader Lukoye Atwoli, associateUCT professor and dean of the School ofMedicine at Moi University in Kenya, said:“My research demonstrates a link betweentrauma exposure and physical health in anAfrican context. I hope my findings will beused in designing interventions for traumasurvivors.”
The research found the most commontrauma causing events were related to theunexpected death of a loved one and wit-nessing a traumatic event occurring tosomeone else. Based on the study, Atwoli,recommended that interventions for trau-ma survivors should include witnesses of
traumatic events.Data from the Sash survey, used in the
UCT study, showed that among South Afri-cans one in three have mental disorderslasting between 12 months and a lifetime,the most prevalent disorder is anxiety(15.8%), then substance abuse (13.3%) andmood disorders (9.8%), and 11% have twoor more mental disorders.
Pharmacist and integrative medicines ex-pert Felicia Rubin says South Africans ex-perience high rates of trauma and anxietyand noted that a 2013 study ranked SA sec-ond most stressed among 74 countries. Ru-bin advises trauma sufferers or those withanxiety should consult a medical profes-sional or mental health expert immediately.She also advises a healthy lifestyle to avoidor address anxiety and recommends reduc-ing the intake of excess sugar and avoidingstimulants such as fizzy drinks and coffee,consistent exercise, share emotions withclose friends and family, practise mindful-ness, and join a support group if you havesuffered trauma.

her death she made a plea for help.This is the story relayed by Sum-
mer Greens residents last weekduring a vigil held for resident Nic-ola de Goede in Emerald Way Park.They explain that De Goede, a
known drug user, died recentlyshortly after she was found be-tween two houses during a commu-nity march.
Thought she was deadInitially they thought she was
dead, but when they realised shewas still alive she was rushed tohospital where she passed away.
As the sun set over SummerGreens on Tuesday 24 November,tears fell as residents made heart-felt pleas for the drug problem tobe tackled. Residents lit candlesand stood with photographs of DeGoede, more fondly known asNicky. They reflected on her lifeand shared stories in a park whichhas become synonymous withdrug use.
The vigil was organised by resi-dent Bridgette Lloyd who ex-plained Nicky went to school withher daughter and was well knownin the community. During her ad-dress, she explained many Sum-mer Greens families were facingadversity as children got hookedon drugs.
“Nicky came to me before shedied and told me she had a stroke.She wanted help; she wanted to goto rehab. We were getting ready toget her into a place when I heardshe had died. She was everyone’schild and this could have happenedto anyone. We must come togetherand find a way to address the issuesthat are plaguing our community.”
Hope in her eyesTwo women shared their stories
of children who are addicted todrugs and Gary Jacobs, chairper-
son of the Summer Greens Neigh-bourhood Watch (SGNHW), made aplea for residents to assist thewatch.
“I knew Nicky from the streetsand when I spoke to her I could seethere was hope in her eyes. This isvery sad but we need to unite andstart looking at the drug problemsin this community. My request isthat you stand up and keep your
community safe and help us put astop to all the drugs.
“When you see people by thetrain line, report it. We know whatthey do there and we must start re-porting the crime and the drugs ifwe want to keep our children safe.”
Two men and a woman, who resi-dents explain are Nicky’s friends,were spotted among the crowd. Thewoman walked to the front crowd
and said she was saddened byNicky’s passing.
“She was a very good friend; veryhelpful. You know we are all ondrugs, but it’s hard to stop becausewe don’t have family support,” shesaid as tears ran down her face.
A former gangster also ad-dressed the crowd and said Nicky’sdeath should be a catalyst forchange in Summer Greens.

place over the weekend.Seventeen learners took part in the derby,
a project started by the Bothasig police.According to police spokesperson War-

Goodwood police arrested four suspects forpossession of an unlicensed firearm and pos-session of a dangerous weapon.Warrant Officer Jacques Pieters and Con-
stable Steven Drury spotted a white Opel As-trawith four occupants.When the occupantsnervously looked back at the officers, they
decided to follow the vehicle. The vehicledrove around in Goodwood for more than 20minutes.In Fitzroy Street the vehicle stopped and
two occupants got out, but jumped backwhen they saw the police officers.Pieters andDrury stopped next to the vehi-
cle and saw how the left front passenger wastrying to hide something.When the members searched the vehicle
they found that the front passenger was sit-ting on top of a .38 firearm with rounds. Theserial number was filed off. They also founda toy gun under the front passenger seat.The suspects, aged 22, 24, 31 and 35, ap-
peared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Courton charges of possession of an unlicensedfirearm and a dangerous weapon.

13:00 en 14:00 tuis by hul huis in Valencias-traatmethaarkinders, onderskeidelik 2 en4 jaar oud, toe die koeël die muur bokantdie eettoonbank getref het – presies daarwaar sy enkele minute tevore staan en kosmaak het.“Dit was net Godsgeluk dat ons nie meer

Iris House Children’s Hospice last Tuesdayhosted an event at their hospice in Bellvilleto cement its relationship with Grandslots,a wholly owned subsidiary of Grand Pa-rade Investments (GPI).
The event allowed provincial minister ofeconomic opportunities, Alan Winde, whoattended the event, to tour the hospice andget a feel for what might be implementednationally in terms of hospice care train-ing.
Iris House is South Africa’s only hospicededicated to caring for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.
GPI is helping to make an impact on thelives of children with special needs by pro-viding funding to build an eco-friendlytraining facility on the grounds of IrisHouse Children’s Hospice.
Contributions from Grandslots have ena-bled the hospice to train carers in the com-munity in 2014, and build a learning centrethat trains over 80 community and hospicebased carers for children with specialneeds.
In 2015, the respite care programme de-veloped by Iris House has been adopted bynational government, meaning thanks tothe support from Grandslots, the hospice isable to play a part in the training of carersof children with special needs nationwide.
At the event last Tuesday, Iris Houseshowcased their hospice model, which is afirst in the country, and founder and chair-person Sue van der Linde explained howthe training fits into their community andhospice care model.
Over the past two years, funding hasamounted to a total of R278 350 to IrisHouseChildren’s Hospice through the Grandslotsprogramme, run by GPI.

She may be only 21, but Lauren-Lee Bockis already proving she can hold her ownwith some of Cape Town’s biggest.
In fact, the Cape Music Institute graduate,from Bellville South is a regular on stagewith the Winston SiljeurProject and the Sebastian Ja-cobs band, but she’s also hardat work to build her own per-sonal singing career.
Lauren’s musical journeystarted begrudgingly at home.“In a musical home, you arebasically forced to sing.”
She hated it, but her familyforced her to sing in her grand-father’s church, and with timeher talent grew on her and shewent on to study music.
Lauren started singing withboth the Winston SiljeurProject and the Sebastian Ja-cobs band while she was still studying andsays her journey with them has been amaz-ing, adding that she’s learnt a lot from herfellow musicians.
“Both groups have had a good effect onme.” Both bands are 13-piece acts that per-form mostly original pieces.
While Lauren has the talent, she also hasno illusions about the local music industry.
“I know it will take hard work and I willwork with the right people to make a namefor myself,” she said.
She recently started working with Britishmusic manager David Gummers after herfriend and mentor, Desne Jodamus, intro-duced the two. David has been helping Lau-
ren with her musical decisions and securingexposure, like her upcoming interview onthe television show Hectic Nine-9 later thismonth. She’s also started working with a vo-cal coach. “Everyone tells me I have a uniquevoice when they hear me,” she says, adding:“It has a raspiness.”
Music fans can catch Lauren in actionwhen she performs two showswith the Winston SiljeurProject this weekend.

bereidingskool Durbanville is, hetmo-tocross in sy bloed.Hy is ’n lid vanWPMC en sy gunste-
lingbaan is Sone 7, waar hy die meestevan sy tyd deurbring. Neil word afge-rig deur Anthony Raynard, plaaslikeen nasionale MX-kampioen.Neilwas verlede jaar die 50 cc-junior
klubkampioen in die Wes-Kaap in syeerste volle jaar van motocross.
“Hyhet vanjaar die senior klubkam-pioenskap gewen ten spyte daarvandat hy veel jonger is as meeste van syteenstanders,” sê sy pa.“Ons het ook vanjaar vir die eerste

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu requires a lot of hardwork and dedication.
Somuch so, that it takes aminimumof tenyears of full-time commitment to achieve theblack belt. It takes another minimum ofthree years to grade to a dan.
“I feel honoured tobe theonlyman inCapeTown that is a first dan black belt. I am stillthe only heavyweightMMA fighter that wasnever defeated in the country between 2003and 2011 and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu played amassive role in my suc-cess.
“Roberto is the chief ofone of the biggest organi-sations in the world thatis based in Brazil. RioGrappling Club has clubsall over the world and tobe associated with theproud institution is fan-tastic.
“Many people don’t re-alise the years of workthat go into achieving afirst dan black belt. I wasvery fortunate to be grad-ed to my first dan in threeyears. If Roberto sees youhave not progressed suffi-ciently you just have togrind it out and step upthe intensity.
“Roberto travels theworld to his different
clubs and he visits South Africa once a year.It is a humbling experience learning fromthis great man and it feels like an earlyChristmas present being graded,” said Hat-tingh proudly. Hattingh, who runs the REPSMMA and Crossfit Edward Street in Bell-ville, is giving back through his expertiseand sharinghis experiencewith theyoungergenerations.He travels throughout Cape Town to teach
at schools in the northern and southern sub-urbs. EFC fighters Gideon Drotschie andLuke Michael also established themselveson the international scene with Hattingh intheir corner.Hattingh is poised to grade to his second
