Everyone should be together.”If these grand plans become a reality then
it would be one of the home’s biggest achie-vements.It has had to endure difficult times, with
funding being the greatest challenge of all.If the home can find the finances, it would
doubtlessly flourish.“The fact that we now have the money to
purchase the land and the neccessary per-mission, means we are convinced this is asign from above. We have counted on thesupport of the City and our local ward coun-cillor Bernadette le Roux.”

was sy geskok toe sy sien die wedstrydeword geadverteer. “Vandat ons hier woon,is ons onder die indruk dat die grafte vandie stigters van die dorp daar is. Wat hetvan ons gemeenskap geword as die graftevan die dooies nou as sportvelde gebruikword?” wonder die inwoner, wat verkiesom anoniem te bly. TygerBurger het verle-de jaar berig (“Sirkel kry verlore glans te-rug”, 24 September 2014) dat Communica-re, die behuisingsgroepwat baie van die ei-endomme in die woonbuurtbesit, besluit het omdie sirkel opte knap. Waar dit in die verlede’n oase van lowergroen gras enskaduryke bome was, het dit toeverval in ’n plek van onheil.Die planne was om ’n mini-
sokkerveld op die sirkel op te rigen daar is reeds verlede jaar be-gin met opknapwerk.Nicolette Boois, woordvoerder

In 1984 the Swiss couple Emil and LilianaSchmid, decided to goonayear-long jour-ney to explore the world.One thing led to another and before they
could count to 713 000, they travelled 713 000kilometres in 30 years through 181 coun-tries. In the same car!The 73-year-olds have been the recordhol-
ders for the “Longest driven journey” in theGuinness Book of World Records since 1998When looking at the world map on which
their precise route was logged, it looks likean intricate dreamcatcher of overlapping li-nes.It is, therefore, no surprise that they
found their way to Melkbosstrand and Ta-ble View in their Toyota LandCruiser FJ60recently – for the second time.“We love Cape Town, but the traffic is too
much,” says Emil in his Swiss accent.It was his 73rd birthday on Tuesdaywhen
TygerBurger contacted him.He laughs before he says: “You are the se-
cond person to wish me a happy birthdaytoday. My wife was the first!”Their love evidently grew stronger with
ever passing 100 000km on their Toyota’sodometer.“The car is as ancient as me,” jokes Emil,
before adding that the engine is still run-ning smoothly, but thebodyhas takenabea-ting.Answers to TygerBurger’s questions co-
me quickly, because the Schmids have donejust over 250 interviews since they startedtheir journey.The attempt to ask a unique question was
shot down when Emil answered the nextwithout a moment of hesitation: “There arenot enough roads inAntarctica! It is also ve-ry expensive and virtually impossible to getpermits.We live out of a retirement pensionfrom Switzerland and it’s not bad, but notnearly enough to go to Antarctica.”Their funds also limit the possibility to
travel through China, because Emil says itcosts $10000 per month to get a guide.Most people can only dream to have the
funds available to see but one country, andEmil is aware of how lucky they have been.
“In Switzerland most couples would buya house, but mywife and I decided to rathersee the world. Then later her mother diedand left us somemoney in her will and thenlatermymother also died. Since thenweha-ve lived off pension,” he continues.The challenge of getting enoughmoney to
continue on their adventure isn’t as big asovercoming insufficient infrastructure, ter-rorism or bureaucracy.“In some countries, especially in Africa,
the roads are non-existent! And then in Ni-geria there is the Boko Haram, to name butone of the many terrorist groups out there.But the biggest challenge must be gettingthe right Visas to travel through the world.Before Switzerland went to the SchengenVisa system it was much easier, but nowthatwe fall under thewhole of Europe it cantake a very long time to get it,” says Emil.Now they are heading into Africa once
again to see places they have never seen be-fore (yes, there are actually places theSchmids haven’t seen before).One Emil is particularly looking forward
to is Ethiopia, sincemountainous terrain iswhere his soul finds peace. For this reasonMongolia has a special place in his heart.Pacific islands are also calling once
again, but this time the Schmids want toskip Samoa and Papa New Guinea.“We have been there before, and mostly
whenyouvisit a country for the second timeit holds some disappointment.The thought of them going to one place
every December holiday like “normal peo-ple” must be a depressing proposition.“This time we want to go to Micronesia.
It is very small with a few islands, so we ho-pe to hop from one island to the next.”TygerBurger stops Emil right there and
says we cannot steal any more minutesfrom his birthday. ago, a car with occupants from Richwoodwas ambushed by armed attackers, the ve-hicle shot at and chased from the N7 bridgeto the Bothasig traffic circle by the attac-kers.“Another group of vagrants were obser-
ved living in the bush on vacant land direc-tly behind Richwood (and opposite Du-noon) which has been set aside for housingdevelopment. It would appear some infra-structure such as street lamps and drainshas been vandalised. We raised fears of theinvasion of the land. This land has sufferedgreat neglect before and after Nedbank re-cently took over after the previous develo-per apparently could not continuewith thisproject. The overgrown vegetation have be-come a haven for criminals and remain un-der threat of veld fire,whichwill negativelyaffect the Richwood homes bordering thispublic open space,” says Bolton.He says they are pleased at the speed at

can record in the 200m freestylein a time of 2:09.72 breaking theprevious record of 2:10.91, heldby Jessica Liss since 2007.Rebecca is currently in grade
7 at Edgemead Primary School.She is the current Western Pro-vince Victrix Ludorum andmul-tiple WP age group record hol-der. Rebecca’s other top achieve-ments included winning the800m freestyle for women, pla-cing second in the 400m indivi-dual medley and placing third inthe 200m individual medley. Re-becca broke four WP age grouprecords as follows: 200m freesty-le (2:09.72); 800m freestyle(9:17.71); 200m individualmedley(2:26.97); 400m individualmedley(5:08.92).

burg), finished as runners-up in the inaugu-ral seven-day TransCape MTB from Knysnato Franschhoek recently.The TeamRide pair joined 100 intrepid cy-
clists at the start of the event at sunrise and
set off on a 750 km adventure of a lifetime.The two raced hard up Simola hill and
northwards through Rheenendal, traver-sing thedramaticHomtini pass, but gradual-ly lost sight of lead pair Björn Rondelez andNiek Lingier from Belgium.By the time they faced the final assault on
the finish line along the famous sevenpassesroad to the NMMU Campus in George, theywere nearly 30 minutes behind the overseas
riders, finishing the 109km stage – with2 716m of climbing - second in 5:48:45.

ge three’s 118km from Calitzdorp to Rivers-dal was “easier”, although had over 2 000mof climbing, including the stunning Rooi-berg Pass and strong headwinds through theKleinKaroo saw a few riders calling it a day.Lambrecht and Attridge, however, were
still unable to catch the Belgium pair andhad to be satisfied with second again in5:13:24, only 10 minutes short.
Big effortWith the Belgium team comfortably lea-
ding, the SA pair put in a big effort on dayfour over 120km from Riversdal to follow an
undulating 60 km stretch along the foot ofthe Langeberg mountains before headingwestwards to the Grootvadersbosch NatureReserve, on through Zuurbraak, south pastBuffeljagsrivier and into the Bontebok Nati-onal Park before finishing in Swellendam.They almost upset the Belgians, coming in
two minutes behind in 5:31:25.Day five was to be their day, charging into
Greyton to claim their first stage win in4:36:26.n the penultimate stage from Greyton to
Villiersdorp the Belgianswere back on formto win comfortably in 3:44:37 followed homeby Attridge and Lambrecht fifth with a timeof 4:01:25.Despite this result they went into the final
“short” stage - 75km’s - from Villiersdorp toFranschhoek of the TransCape event on Va-lentine’s Day still second, which would bethe overall position they would finish in.This after conquering the famous Groen-landberg and Franschhoek Pass and finis-hing this grueling event at the La CouronneWine Farm in Franschhoek in 3:45:24.In total they spent 36:00:09 in the saddle
