Stephen believes that Jake’s case would never have been heard in court if people never wrote letters to the media and Lubbe would have never been charged. News24 reported on Thurs- day 21 February, that after nine months of waiting Lub- be has finally had his day in court and was charged with drunken driving and culpa- ble homicide. Delays “The magistrate, Preggy Govender, asked about the long delay on this case and she could not understand why the matter had not been heard. According to Milnerton High School’s principal, Paul Besener, Jake was a well-bal- anced student and was destined for great things. “After his death it was very tough, because there was always an empty chair in every class as a reminder of the tragedy. All our school events felt empty, because he wasn’t there to perform his head boy du- ties,” says the principal. Jake’s mom, the very emotional Sue Woot- ton recalls the day when she received the phone call from his friends telling her that her son was in an accident. “We rushed through to Hermanus to see Jake. He was lat- er transferred to Vincent Pallotti, because the hospital did not have resources to take care of him. After the third day, the doctor told us that Jake was not there any more,” says Sue. INJURED IN CAR CRASH: DIED AFTER 3 DAYS

or the last year a high school inMilner-

ton has had an empty chair in nearly

every Grade 12 class, that served as a

constant reminder of the tragic circum-

stances in which the former head boy died.

The delaywith the trial of the late Milner-

ton High School boy Jake Wootton has a lot

    of question marks surrounding it.

The court date has nowbeen set for 22May

when the accused, SchalkLubbe, will tell the

court what happened on the day he allegedly

drove into Jake with his car.

    Tragedy

Many will recall the tragic incident that

happened on 4April last year, just before the

Easter weekend, when Jake and his friends

were walking on a pavement in Hermanus

when a car drove into him. He sustained fa-

tal head injuries andwas declared dead after

    According to News24, Ja-

    him that afternoon believe

    that the accused was drunk

at the time of the tragic inci-

    dent and that the Hermanus

police failed to test his alco-

    hol levels.

    Jakes father, Stephen

    Wootton,whos still trying to

come to terms with his sons

    death, says that the journey

since that fatal day has been

    tough on the family.

These delays in the investigation around

my sons death seem to be a cover up. Every

time we thought that thered be a hearing,

    a documentwasmissing or the investigation

    was incomplete.

TheWoottons even took their case toWest-

ern Cape MEC of transport, Robin Carlisle

    to see justice prevail.

    Stephen believes that Jakes

    case would never have been

    heard in court if peoplenever

    wrote letters to the media

    and Lubbe would have never

    been charged.

    News24 reported on Thurs-

    day 21 February, that after

    nine months of waiting Lub-

be has finally had his day in

    court and was charged with

    drunken driving and culpa-

    ble homicide.

    Delays

    The magistrate, Preggy Govender, asked

about the long delay on this case and she

could not understand why the matter had

not been heard. This was a cover up to get

Lubbe free, the emotional dad alleges.

    According to Milnerton High Schools

because there was always an empty chair in

wasnt there to perform his head boy du-

Congested traffic jams will soon become

a thing of the past, because passengers

have placed their travel burdens on the

shoulders of the MyCiTi bus service.

Since its inception at the 2010 FIFA

World Cup the service has surpassed five

million passenger trips. Up until the end

of December 2012 a total number of

    5 374 508 passengers were recorded.

Of this total, over 4,5million passengers

havemadeuse of the airport route, theTa-

ble View trunk route, as well as the area

routes in the city centre and the Table

View area since the systems launch in

    May 2011.

    Surpassing five million passenger trips

is a significant milestone and indicates

that the residents of the city have em-

braced this vision of transport for Cape

    Town.

    MyCiTi plans for 2013 include:

V Nine routes which will be incremen-

tally implemented in the city centre,

stretching as far as Imizamo Yethu, Hout

Bay and Hangberg. These routes will all

be operated by the newmedium-sized, low

floor buses to enable universally accessi-

    ble boarding from the pavement.

V The current services in the Table

View area will be expanded to include

routes to Mamre and Atlantis, Century

City and Du Noon. These services will be

a mix of larger high floor buses along the

main routes, and low floor buses.

We are excited about being able to

bring this world-class service to even

more people across Cape Town. Not only

is the service comfortable and convenient

for passengers, but offers a considerable

cost saving to commuters when one con-

siders factors such as the petrol price,

    said mayoral committee member for

    transport, roads and stormwater, Brett

    Herron.

    AMalawian construction worker is believed

to have been killed in an on-site freak acci-

dent at Century City on Wednesday, 20 Feb-

    ruary.

The late Orlando Phiri who is a Joe Slovo

resident was involved in building a block of

flats in the area. Before his death he was op-

erating a jack hammer on a concrete pillar

    when a trench collapsed.

    ER24s Derrick Banks says: Phiri

knocked his head against a concrete pillar

when the trench collapsed under him. He

sustained fatal injuries to his neck and back

which led to him losing his life.

The media spokesperson for the police,

Capt FC vanWyk says that the investigation

shows that the Malawian man lost his bal-

    ance: The trenchcollapsedanda large struc-

ture that the builders were lowering also

gave way. This created unfavourable condi-

tions for the man to maintain his balance,

    says van Wyk.

Banks says that the paramedics declared

Phiri dead at the scene. We carefully as-

sessed his condition and established that the

injurieswere fatal and that he brokehis neck

    in the fall.

VanWyk confirmed that an inquest docket

has been opened and that no foul play is sus-

    pected.

    Worker dies onsite in trench

A baby grysbok the size of a small cat was

born at a wetland reserve in Century City.

The baby, which is estimated to be just

a few weeks old was spotted and photo-

graphed by a regular visitor to Intaka Is-

    land, Pat Elk.

The island is part of a grysbok project be-

ing undertaken by the Cape Town City

Council that enables smaller nature re-

serves to house this animal in a more sus-

    tainable way.

In June 2010 two grysbok were re-intro-

duced to Intaka following a lengthy approv-

al process and with the full support of Cape

Nature, the City of Cape Towns Nature

    Conservation Department and the Blouv-

    lei/Intaka Island Environmental Advisory

    Committee.

    Century Citys environmental manager

Alan Liebenberg says that grysbok are soli-

tary and nocturnal animals that choose to

spend most of the day sheltering under

bushes and are more active between dusk

    and dawn.

Last year we found two sets of spoors

close to each other, which is unusual. We

hoped that there would be an offspring and

    our wish was granted.

down the man on McGregor Street. He was

charged with theft after appearing in the

    Cape Town Magistrates Court.

A familiar suspect was arrested after po-

    lice spottedhimonvideo footage.This came

after the man burgled a house and stole

In hospital, far from his family

    LEON STEENKAMP

Nothing could be more heart-breaking and

frustrating as to have your child injured, ly-

ing in hospital in a foreign country and hav-

ing no means to be there for him.

This is the reality of the situation Karen

    Cornelius ofTableView is findingherself in.

    Karens son Warren Dinkelmann (22)

    started teaching English

    at the Krathum Baen

    School in Thailand in Sep-

    tember last year.

    He really enjoyed it. He

    was really happy there

    and loved working with

the children. I think he re-

    ally found his niche,

    Karen said adding that

    Warrens Facebook page

is full of photos of him

    teaching in front of the

    class all smiles.

    However, things took a

turn for the worst on Fri-

    day 8 February.

    Warrenwas at a friends

    flat when he leant against

    thebalcony railing. It gave

away and he fell three storeys to the ground

    below.

It was terrible. What was worse is that

no one speaks English and the initial stories

were so confusing. We didnt know what ex-

actly his injuries were and what his condi-

tion was, Karen said describing her emo-

    tions upon hearing the news.

    Pointing towards the communication bar-

rier, Karen and her family only found out

that Warren had also cracked his jawbone

    the Monday following the accident.

    Warrenwas first rushed to anearbyhospi-

tal but then transferred to the Samut Sakhu

    Hospital.

Updates of his situation came to Karen

    via Warrens long-time friend Jamie

Stephen who joined him on the trip to

    Thailand.

The first couple of days we didnt know

whether he had brain damage or whether

he was going to make it. He drifted in and

    out of consciousness.

Jamie took pictures of Warren in the

    ICU, but the hospital

    staff confiscated his

    phone anddeleted all the

    pictures, Karen said.

    A Skype conversation

    with Warren last week

    Saturday was the first

    time Karen saw her son

    after the fall.

    It was terrible, be-

    cause his whole face is

    like this, Karen said

    gesturing a circle with

    her hands around her

    face. But he is respon-

    sive.

    Warren suffered mas-

    sive head swelling and

    bleeding on the brain,

    both eye sockets are

cracked, his right cheekbone has been

crushed and his left is cracked, his jaw-

bone is cracked, both wrists are broken

with the right wrist having an open frac-

    ture.

An operation on Sunday 10 February

was done to repair his wrists.

That Tuesday the doctors said they

cant wait any longer to operate on his in-

juries as the bones can start growing back

    incorrectly.

That operation lasted seven hours. An-

other operation was done to repair the

    damage to his nose.

Warren currently breaths with the help

of a tracheostomy a pipe that is inserted into

    his throat.

The pins in his wrists will also need to be

    removed in the future.

Karen and her family are now desperately

trying to raise funds for Warrens medical

costs and for aplane ticket toThailand forher-

    self.

Hismedical costs are currently an estimat-

ed R60 000. According to Jamie the doctors

said Warren will have to stay in hospital for

    another three weeks.

He has however starting taking in water

and juice. They will try to feed him liquidised

food this week, as his jaw is wired shut,

    Karen said last Wednesday.

She said there are many South Africans

    in Thailand.

One thing I can tell parents is that they

should take out medical insurance for their

children. Warren said: Ag mom, I wont

    need it, Karen warned.

Theyare currently selling tickets for a live

    show at theWillowbridge Barnyard Theatre

    at R130 each.

The Surfing Safari show takes place on 9

March at 20:00 and features music by San-

tana, The Beach Boys, UB40, Maroon 5, Katy

Perry and the Grease soundtrack. A host of

raffle prizes will also be offered at the show.

To buy tickets or help Karen with a dona-

    tion contact her on 082 096 8338.

    Warren Dinkelmann is busy

When people heard about newly married

Richard Kohlers plan to paddle from Na-

mibia to Mozambique along the Atlantic

and Indian Oceans, everybody said he was

    having a mid-life crisis.

It wasnt long before Richard found him-

self paddling on the Orange River in Na-

mibia on a mission to make his dream a re-

    ality.

People said all sorts of things, but on 24

October 2012, I was in my canoe on the Or-

ange River and started paddling towards

Mozambique via the Atlantic Ocean, says

    Richard.

    The 33-year-oldMilnertonRidgemanwas

made for the open waters. He is a paddle

coach and has been a professional yachts-

man for the last 20 years. In 2007 he repre-

    sented SouthAfricawhenhewas amember

of the well-known Team Shosholoza, that

    competed in the Americas Cup.

For Richard being a member of a prestig-

ious sailing teamwasnot enough. I always

    hadaburningdesire to single-handedly sail

across the Atlantic Ocean, but someone

beat me to that. I did more research and

learned that no one had ever paddled from

Namibia to Mozambique. I then found out

about the Operation Smile charity and de-

cided to raise funds for the work that

    theyre doing.

It took Richard 70 days to complete the

mission. I paddled for 45 km each day, that

lasted between four and five hours. At

times it was tough, with the Atlantic Ocean

presenting extremely windy and cold con-

    ditions that needed perseverance.

Richard laughs as he recalls his journey

    paddling back from Mozambique.

On the third day I got attacked by a

shark. On the fifth day my boat broke in

half and I had to spend some time in hospi-

tal. Just as I thought Id recovered and was

ready to continue the mission I returned to

my accommodation and discovered that I

was robbed of everything, except my car

and the clothes on my back, says Richard.

This setback cost Richard a year to recov-

er from, because he needed to acquire the

right equipment to make his journey suc-

    cessful.

Despite all of this Richard says that hell

do it all over again, because ofwhathe expe-

    rienced on the journey.

The biggest highlight of his journey he

says is seeing 15 killer whales as he crossed

    False Bay.

He admits that the experience changed

his life and taught him about his strengths.

Years ago a surgeon told me that Id never

be able to run again. Others toldme that Ill

never finish, but Ive learned that you have

    to challenge yourself.

Richard hopes to raise enough funds for

200 cleft lips and palate operations in south-

ern Africa and Mozambique. The money

has not been calculated yet, but Im hope-

    ful, says the paddler.

    Long paddle is to

    bringmany smiles

Richard Kohler sitting on the West Coast during his journey to Mozambique.

The recent handing over of a trusty bakkie

marked the end of an era at the Eric Miles

    Cheshire Home in Sanddrift.

The Nissan 1 400 bakkie that has been in

the service of the home, which caters for 45

disabled residents, for the last 14 years was

donated back to the De Grendel Lions Club

    last Tuesday.

The De Grendel Lions in conjunction

with two German Lions Clubs donated the

bakkie to the home years ago. The last cou-

ple of years the Lions have been borrowing

the vehicle over weekends for their food

    parcel deliveries.

    Thehome inJanuary receivedanewRen-

ualt Kangoo panelvan thanks to the contri-

bution of the Nomads Golf Club Western

Province. Eric Miles Cheshire Home is the

beneficiary of the clubs Andrew Mentis

    Endowment Fund.

This is very special forme. When I start-

ed working here in 1984 we only had one ve-

hicle which had also been donated by the

Nomads. After all these years it is very nice

to receive another vehicle from the No-

mads, said the homes manager Alet Bos-

    man.

Bosman said they thought it fitting to

give the bakkie back to the Lions for its

    charity work.

    Bakkie heads home again

Handing over the Nissan bakkie to Martin Kallis (left) president of the De Grendel Lions Club is

Rulof Jooste, chairman of the Eric Miles Cheshire Homes executive committee. Also present

were (from left) John Masterton, Martin Thelander (members of De Grendel Lions and Eric

Miles executive committee) and Virginia Kasana, another member of the homes committee.

    Beach cleanup time again

The Blouberg Beach Cleanup invites all

families to its 1Ton1Day Beach cleanup

    on 2 March.

    Volunteers meet in the beachfront

parking lot (Seli 1 wreck) at 10:00.

This will be the third time we are

    running this hugely successful cleanup

day. We are looking for people who will

come and collect bags from us and head

to Big Bay and Melkbos to go cleanup

    there, says organiser Gregory Player.

The beaches are in a very sad state.

    NADINE MOODIE

When endurance sports like the Unlimited

Dusi CanoeMarathon are in your blood and

every beat of your heart ululates at the

thought of another intense race you have to

be a special person with patience as long as

    a marathon.

One such individual is Milnerton resi-

dent Greg van Heerden, who recently com-

pleted his thirdDusi thatwas held in Pieter-

maritzburg on Friday, 15 February. Greg

who is also the chairperson of theMilnerton

Canoe Club and the secretary-general for

Cycling South Africa says that hes always

    been passionate about endurance sports.

As a kid I always enjoyed all sports. I just

like sports, but I always foundmyself enjoy-

ing the endurance sports more, says Greg.

    I started paddling in 1988 and in 1990 I

    successfully completed my first Dusi.

For Greg the race changed when he was

approached to help presenter, MC andmod-

el, Liezel van der Westhuizen prepare for

    the marathon.

It was 12 weeks before the 2012 Dusi and

Liezel needed help with her training. I was

keen to assist her, because Im a canoeist

and completed the race before. And because

Liezel was doing the race for The Unlimited

Child charity organisation, that helps close

to 16 000 children in The Valley of a Thou-

    sand Hills.

Liezel who is known for her charity con-

tributions, funky radio voice on KFM and

TV face on the SABC3 breakfast show, eX-

presso says that she wouldnt have it any

other way. Greg is incredible. Hes very

patient and takes time with everyone. I re-

ally wont do the race with anyone else.

The Dusi canoemarathon has been in ex-

istence for just over 60 years and partici-

pants have to paddle 125 km over three

days, along the Umsindusi and Umgeni riv-

    ers that flow fromPietermaritzburg toDur-

    ban.

This race is not for the faint hearted or

impatient as it requires months of body,

    mind and soul preparation.

To prepare Greg and Liezel embarked on

    an intense training schedule.

We practised paddling in a K2 (a two-

man canoe) twice a week, we ran each

morning to strengthen and condition our

legs for the distances that we needed to run

during the race. We also did a gym routine,

because we needed to be able to run with

our 18 kgcanoeat certainparts in the race,

    says the humble Greg.

He admits that the race was tough, be-

cause weather conditions were warm and

humid and that there were many rapids.

On the first day the temperature was 43 C

and we went into a tree, but luckily the ca-

noe never broke. The next two days were

cooler and a lot of fun.

Training a novice for the Dusi

Greg van Heerden paddling his way through the

    treacherous Dusi marathon.

The City of Cape Towns application to in-

clude selected portions of Bellville, Parow

and Maitland into its Urban Development

Zone (UDZ) has been approved by theMinis-

ter of Finance, with the validity period for

this incentive being extended from 31

    March 2014 to 31 March 2020.

The UDZ is a tax incentive administered

by National Treasury that aims to address

urban decay in South Africas inner cities

    by promoting private sector-led investment

    in commercial and residential develop-

    ments.

The two areas to be incorporated include

a 83 ha extending from Bellville to Parow,

and42 ha inMaitland.Bothof these sites are

    located within the N1-Voortrekker Road

corridor, which is described as the econom-

    ic core of the city.

    These economic centres, however, are

suffering from a lack of investment, and

thus require special attention to ensure de-

    velopment.

The upgrading of run-down buildings in

these areas will be given priority in line

with the UDZs purpose of rejuvenating

    South Africas inner cities.

The UDZ allows for significant tax sav-

ings for building developments which fall

    within the following categories:

    VErection, extension or improvement of

    or addition to an entire building;

    V Erection, extension, improvement or

addition of part of a building representing

    a floor area of at least 1 000 m2;

    VErection, extension, improvement or ad-

    dition to low-cost housing; or

V Purchase of such a building or part of

a building directly from a developer.

During the selection process, over 20 are-

as throughout the metropolitan area were

    considered for possible UDZ inclusion.

    The Bellville and Maitland extensions

were judged against criteria set out by the

National Treasury and were found to be the

areas thatwould draw themost benefit from

    the application of the incentive.

When the UDZ incentive was first intro-

duced in 2003, the City of Cape Town demar-

cated an area of 551 ha in the Cape Town

    CBD, which extended through Woodstock,

Salt River, Observatory and Mowbray in-

    cluding thewestern sections ofVoortrekker

and Klipfontein Roads, as well as 78 ha of

    the Bellville CBD.

    Mayoral committee member for econom-

    ic, environmental and spatial planning,

    GarrethBloorbelieves that theBellville and

    Maitland extensionswill reap the sameben-

    efits.

A generous donation from GI Combat Sup-

plies in Montague Gardens has made it pos-

sible for theHermanus policeK9Unit to con-

    tinue doing its specialised job.

It all came crashing down for the K9 Unit

when their offices were vandalised and set

alight by a rioting crowd in November 2012.

The fire resulted in the unit losing its

equipment to the fire, but managed to save

the dogs in time and keep themout of harms

    way.

As this was happening a website forum

called Gunsite picked up the units plight

and encouraged the gun community to do-

nate money to replace some of the lost gear.

GI Combat Supplies in Montague Gar-

    dens manager, AlanMarthezewhowas also

the co-ordinator of the initiative, says that

itwas a shame thatmembers of theunit used

their own salaries to purchase non-standard

equipment for specialised tasks. We tried

    to replace their non-standard equipment

with load bearing equipment and vests, he

    says.

Twoweeks ago the K9 unit surprisedMar-

theze and his team in Montague Gardens

when they arrived unannounced to collect

    the equipment.

Head of the K9 unit, Capt Steenkamp Ver-

meulen says: It was a shocking surprise.

Our unit did not know about this at all and

we didnt know these people at all.

Actually we found out about it on Face-

The Du Noon-based short film, iBalaclava,

received honours along with rave reviews

recently when it dominated the second an-

    nual Jozi Film Festival.

The festival, held from 15 to 17 February,

saw eight local short films vying for the top

    spot.

The weekend of viewing culminated in an

awards ceremony at the Villa Arcadia in

Parktown which was hosted by comedian,

    John Vlismas.

iBalaclava shared the award for Best

Short Fiction Film with My Room at the

Centre of the Universe much to the delight

of first time director, Nevil Sandama.

I was so surprised. It was awesome win-

    ning the prize, Sandama said.

One of the highlights of the film festival

    forSandama, producerHowardJamesFyvie

and associate producer Laurian Guy, was a

screening of iBalaclava to over 300 locals in

Kliptown, Soweto at a pop-up cinema. iBala-

clava also played at the Bioscope Independ-

ent Cinema in the Maboneng Precinct. The

Kliptown viewers sat with eyes glued to the

screen as they watched iBalaclava and the

Oscar nominated student film Kanye Kanye.

Set in the Du Noon township in Cape

Town, iBalaclava is a gripping drama that

tells the story of two brothers trying to sur-

vive in a community filledwith gangsterism

    and poverty.

    iBalaclava is part

    of a local film project

    by a bunch of young

    film makers who em-

    barked on a journey

    of film, producing

    three short films that

    showcase some of

    South Africas excit-

    ing new talent.

    The project was

    spearheaded by

    Joshua Generation

    Churchs Film and

    Media team, the Film

    Kru. The team was

    made up of many

    first-time film mak-

    ers and was pro-

    duced on a budget of

    under R8 000.

    They got together

    and invested their

time, creativity and passion into making

modern day parables that show the love of

God to local movie-goers. Over 300 volun-

teers were involved in the project pouring

their hearts and passion into every area, in-

cluding the film making, post production,

graphics, event co-ordination and every oth-

er aspect involved in pulling a project of this

    size together, said Guy.

Headed by the up and coming film maker,

Howard, the teams were given extensive

    training throughout the project.

When the time came for the first screening

of iBalaclava nothing beat a venue in Du

Noon itself. The local high school Inkwenk-

wezi High, partnered with Joshua Genera-

tion Church to host a Youth Fun Day on 16

June 2012 (Youth Day) ending off with the

first screening to the local community.

    The momentum continued for iBalaclava

at the Love Bombs Film Festival at The La-

bia on Orange from the 2 to 9 August 2012.

    Over 2 000 movie-goers attended the event

and Nevil and the team had an opportunity

to share their experiences of creating this

dramatic film to a sold-out crowd. After the

huge success of this festival, The Love

Bombs went back for the an encore showing

    on 14 and 15 September.

The filmmakers were also interviewed by

renowned South African film expert, Barry

Ronge, for Sunday Night at the Movies on

Talk Radio 702 and have been interviewed

    several times onCCFMRadio Station. SABC

2s highest rated youth magazine pro-

gramme. Hectic 9 nine, also had Sandama

and the team in studio for their movie

    themed show.

Filmmakers are excited about the journey

so far, but keep holding onto their seats for

the next step in the adventure.

V To find out more about iBalaclava and to watch

the trailers go to www.lovebombs.co.za or like the

    Facebook page at www.facebook.com/lovebombs-

    films or email [email protected].

Awards pour in for local iBalaclava film

Director of the short film iBalaclava, Nevil Sandama was elated follo-

wing the films award at the second annual Jozi Film Festival.

    Anight out

    shouldnt end

    in hospital

Yet another assault has been reported

outside a club in the northern suburbs.

A 26-year old has laid a charge against

two Table View bouncers for allegedly

assaulting him outside a club on Marine

Circle. While the club owner denies the

charges, this is not the first incident of

its kind in the prominent party spot in

the area. This comes just weeks after a

19-year-old was attacked by a group of

about eight young men and beaten into a

coma in Edward Street. A quick search of

    TygerBurgers archive brings up count-

less articles where young people have

ended up in hospital after being attacked

    near entertainment venues.

This raises the question, what can be

    done to solve the problem?

It is high time effective measures are

put in place to make these areas of the

    northern suburbs safer.

After the much publicised death of

Corn Hale a young teenager, after he

was beaten up in Edward Street in 2011,

    TygerBurger ran an article questioning

the responsibilities of club owners and

    bouncers (Club Safety queried, Tyger-

    Burger, 7 December 2011).

In the article, club owners agreed that

more security was needed on the strip,

but recent incidents show that if security

was upped, it has not made a difference.

One reader suggested earlier this year,

via SMS, that cameras and mobile police

    stations may help the situation.

Whatever the solution may be, it needs

to be found soon, before more teens lose

their lives or are injured while enjoying

    a seemingly harmless night out.

    How do disabled people afford

    to play sports?

    Do they find their own

    sponsors or does someone

sponsor them or must they use

    their own finances?

    I was involved with wheel-

    chair tennis (ACSA) and yes,

    was loaned a sports wheel-

chair. We had to pay for all

    repairs, services and parts.

    I was sponsored on each

occasion for a bus ticket to

    different cities in the country.

Due to the nature of my

disability I needed to fly, so I

    had to pay the difference.

    Upon arrival, all expenses

    were paid, such as accommoda-

    tion, meals, transport to and

    from tennis courts, etc.

    If you wanted free coaching

you had to go to Mitchells

    Plain. You were lucky if

    anyone arrived on time, never

mind, at all. It is a long

    distance to drive and very

    unsafe.

    I was doing well, certainly

It is unfortunate that the Oscar

    Pistorius tragedy has been

seized by the anti-gun lobby as

    an opportunity to once again

    spread their lies about a

    gun-free country equalling a

    crime-free country and to attack

    legal firearm ownership.

    More than 150 years of

    worldwide empirical evidence

    and many studies by reputable

    researchers has proved beyond

any doubt that gun control is a

    miserable failure to control

    crime. The anti-gun lobby is

quick to point out that violent

    crime has declined since the

    implementation of the Gestapo-

    style Firearms Control Act

    (read Civilian Disarmament

Programme) in 2004. The fact is

that since 1994 the amount of

    legal firearms has increased as

    black people, who were previ-

ously denied the right to own

    firearms, were now also procur-

    ing firearms for self-defence

which is the real reason for the

decline in violent crime, not the

    frivolous and Draconian FCA.

    There is an inverse correlation

    between the amount of firearms

in a community and the level of

    violent crime. He who sacrifices

    some freedom for security will

    end up having neither freedom

    nor security.

arious directorates within the City of

Cape Town have pulled together to

    create a city inwhichwomenandchil-

dren are safe and able to reach their full po-

    tential.

In a media release from Demetri Qually,

    mayoral committee member for corporate

services in the City of Cape Town, he calls

for an end to violence against women and

    children.

He says the Gender Forum and City Men

for Change in the City of Cape Townmourn

the recent brutal murders of three young

women in theWestern Cape, but that action

    is also needed.

As we grieve together, it is our hope that

these incidents galvanise the nation into ac-

tion to address this scourge of violence

against women. The statistics speak for

themselves and serve only to heighten the

    need for action.

It is time for South Africans to reclaim

their right to live in homes and communi-

    ties that are safe.

He outlined several strategies of the city

to achieve this. Our dedicated Vice Squad

is specifically focused on combating crimes

that affect women, such as human traffick-

    ing and prostitution.

Our Good Touch, Bad Touch educa-

tion programme is being rolled out at

schools across the city. This includes the

assignment of school resource officers to

certain schools on a permanent basis. They

are trained to assist with general guidance

    in this area.

Qually says the directorate has also en-

sured that allmetro police are trained in the

    implementation of the Domestic Violence

Act which provides victims of abuse with

    specialised recourse mechanisms such as

    the accessing of interdicts.

    According tohim,EarlyChildhoodDevel-

opment and Social Development have ear-

marked a number of programmes intent on

    combating gender-based violence.

Sexual harassment is very often the pre-

cursor to more serious sexual offences.

For this reason the municipality has

pledged to take a zero tolerance approach

    to sexualharassmentbyenforcingandabid-

ing by the Code of Good Practice on the han-

dling of Sexual Harassment Cases (Notice

    1367 of 1998).

He says the objective of this code is to cre-

ate workplaces that are free of sexual har-

    assment, where employers and employees

respect one anothers integrity and dignity,

their privacy, and their right to equity in

    the workplace.

In a bid to raise much-needed funds, the Iris

    HouseChildrensHospice inWelgelegen has

set up various events to assist them.

This past weekend a family fun-day was

held at the Nitida Wine Farm in Durban-

    ville.

The aim of the fun day and other events

is to raise funds so we can increase the size

of our care team and also purchase uni-

forms, says Sue van der Linde, founder of

    Iris House.

It is also an opportunity for our 42 fami-

lies to meet and communicate with one an-

other. Its just a fun day for the entire family.

Its where families who go through the same

    tribulations can bond.

The hospice is a non-profit organisation

committed to enriching the quality of life for

special needs children and young people

    with life-limiting or life-threatening condi-

tions such as cancer, special syndromes and

    cerebral palsy.

At the hospice, volunteers are fully

trained and spend amaximum of four hours

at the homes where they care for the chil-

dren. This meeting also gives the parents an

opportunity to take a break as caring for a

child with special needs is a 24-hour job.

Van der Linde says she wanted to open a

centre, which has been running for a year

and a half, after she did some work in the

    UK.

I was trained in the field and I loved

working with children and when I came

back I decided that our children and families

also need assistance in South Africa. Its

great to know that we can make a little bit

of a difference in the lives of the children.

She added that they are also in need of vol-

    unteers.

Volunteers can be any age, butmust have

a passion for children. They will receive full

training, get their uniforms and all the

equipment they will need to assist the chil-

    dren.

Her message to the public is to never un-

derestimate children who have a life-threat-

    ening illness.

I want them to know that all our children

have a level of understanding and they de-

serve to be treated with the same respect as

    any other child would...

V On Friday 15 March there will be a Surf-

ing Safari at the Willowbridge Barnyard

Theatre. Tickets cost R130 and are available

    from Debra, call 021 559 0800.

V A dinner dance will take place at the

Wolraad Woltemade school hall in Bothasig

on Saturday 6 April from 19:00. There will

be live swing and bluesmusic, a buffet meal,

    complimentary estatewine on table, auction

and a lucky draw. Cost price is R150 per per-

son. Bring your own alcohol. To book con-

tact Robin or Sue on 021 559 0800.

V A golf day is also planned for October.

Lulu is a very affectionate and sociable dog. Full

of energy, this two-year-old, smallish medium

girl needs an active family. Lulu has a perma-

nent scar on her side from a burn incident.

Jenni is an adorable four-month-old girl, who

was rescued with her two sisters, who have

already found homes. She has an outgoing

character who would bring so much fun to

    her forever family.

A bicycle mechanic of Durbanville and an

assistant in a bicycle warehouse in Salt Riv-

er are training to take in their second Absa

    Cape Epic this year.

Max Matini (25), a bike mechanic at Cy-

    clefunatic in Durbanville, and Thembisile

ShaunMtintsilana (23), who lives in Stellen-

bosch, but works as an assistant in a bicycle

warehouse in Salt River, are hoping to take

home the coveted Exxaro Development jer-

sey. They will be riding as Team Pragma

    Trek.

The legendary mountain bike stage race,

which celebrates its 10th year, will take

place from 17 to 24March, andwill see riders

battle the natural elements and each other

while covering a total distance of 698 km.

This includes 15 650 m of climbing from

Meerendal wine estate in Durbanville to

Lourensford wine estate in Somerset West.

    Matini, a Durbanville resident, describes

his fondest memory of the Absa Cape Epic

as day three of the 2011 race.

I cycled for 145 km and experienced no

pain. A feeling of pride came over me when

I realised how far Id come. The most diffi-

cult stage, in my experience, is always the

first stage it is hot andyour legs arent used

    to all the cycling.

The reason I keep comingback is because

this race is interesting and very challeng-

    ing, he said.

For Mtintsilana the most difficult stage is

the first stage, even though its the shortest.

I keep coming back, because its not just

a race about climbing themountain. Its also

    about team work, communication, being

mentally strong, reaching goals, and prov-

ing to young kids that the impossible can

turn to possible. Dont ever give up no mat-

ter how painful the situation youre facing.

It will pass if you set your mind straight,

    he said.

With regards to a podium finish, Matini

said: Well seewhenwe get there. As a team

were aiming for first place in theExxaroDe-

    velopment category.

Matini said that his partner is what keeps

    him on his bike.

The most important ingredient for suc-

cessfully completing the Absa Cape Epic is

training correctly and enough before the

race. Crossing the finish line is always an

    awesome, happy feeling.

    Matini and Mtintsilanas training con-

sists of cycling together on weekends for

    about 12 hours.

    Matini would like getmore disadvantaged

riders to take part in the race, and build up

    more sponsorships.

    Crossing finish

    line is awesome
