On its winding journey through urbanised Cape Town, the polluted river collects “nutrients”, which is food for the alien plant known as water hyacinth. These hyacinths grow uncontrol- lably downstream and the City of Cape Town’s roads and stormwater department spends approximately 30 percent of the total annual clean- ing budget of all rivers, canals and catchpits on the removal of these plants. Which makes one ask; why re- move it at all? Duncan Daries, acting director of the roads and stormwater depart- ment, answers: “One of the reasons, from an engineering perspective, is to improve the hydraulic function- ing of the river. In other words, it improves the flow dynamics of the river.” The Black River, which becomes the Liesbeek River north of the N2, is currently undergoing one of these cleaning operations. Rugby resident Pincus Sanzul ac- companied TygerBurger to the riv- er this weekend just to show how bad the hyacinth situation really is. Next to the M5 it literally looks like a river of luscious greenery. Daries says the reason for this is the fact that the river is in a “contin- uous state of eutrophication”. He explains: “That means it has high levels of nutrients due to the discharge of the Athlone Waste Wa- ter Treatment Works as well as the discharge of grey and black water from the informal settlement in Langa.” He adds that this plant has no predators in the country to control growth. As a result, the city must clean the river once a year by means of a specialised excavator to remove the bulk of the growth. It is followed up by a hand crew (on a boat or raft) to clear the hyacinths that the exca- vator could not reach or was unable to remove. The crew also sometimes works in conjunction with the excavator to draw the floating hyacinths to- wards it. Sanzul wonders why the piles of dead hyacinth is left next to the riv- er to rot, but Daries responds by saying that it is only left to dry and will be transported to the landfill site in good time. A Table View resident’s fictionalownership of a minibus taxi hadher ending up in court despite anobvious blunder.
Leslie Cousins was shocked whenthe sheriff of the court came knock-ing on her door in September lastyear with a court summons.
The summons originated from atraffic fine that was issued in ElsiesRiver earlier for an illegal three-point turn.
“I refused to sign for the sum-
mons and even opened up my ga-rage door to show the messenger ofthe court that I do not own a taxi,”a baffled Cousins said.
She immediately followed up thecase with the City of Cape Towntraffic department.
“I called the 086 number and thewoman confirmed that I don’t ownthe taxi in question,” she said.
Cousins asked what she needs todo to bring the mistake to the atten-tion of the traffic department.
“I was told to contact the trafficmanager. I faxed through an affida-vit explaining the case. My fax re-
ceipt showed that it went throughand I did not receive any other cor-respondence after that,” she says.
Cousins then forgot about thecourt appearance.
“In that time my friend returnedfrom the UK and when I went to pre-pare their house for them, we foundthat it had been burgled. I had somuch on my plate at the time, I cer-tainly wasn’t concerned with a taxithat I didn’t own.”
When Cousins opened her post atthe end of December she was con-fronted with a warrant for her ar-rest due to contempt of court.
“I lawyer friend told me that Inow was in the wrong because I ig-nored the court appearance, whichI understand. After much runningaround I eventually had to see theprosecutor and pay a R300 admis-sion of guilt fine for the contemptof court charge. The prosecutorsquashed the original traffic finebut he was more interested in howI got the summons in the firstplace,” she said.
Although Cousins is irritated atthe waste of time and trouble the in-cident led to she is more worriedabout the reason for the blunder.
“I don’t know whether it was atyping error or whether there is ataxi driver out there with my per-sonal details and who is using itfraudulently. I don’t know whetherthe traffic department has followedup on the case but I have not re-ceived any explanation,” she says.
Cousins was reminded of the herexperience after reading about asimilar incident that happened toBernhard Mauderer from Eversdal(“Many number of owners”, Tyger-Burger, 21 March).
. At the time of going to press thecity did not have a response ready.
Blunder sees taxi ‘owner’ in court
Maitland police are warning the community ofMaitland and Brooklyn to beware of conmenout to scam innocent people by pretending tobe police officers.
“Oneof the suspectswouldpretend tobepick-ing up money and then would show it to the tar-geted victim and offer him or her a share,” saysWarrant Officer Siyabulela Vukubi, Maitlandpolice spokesperson.
“The suspect would then lure the victim toa certain point where the other suspects ap-proach and pretend to be police officers withpolice ID cards. The suspects would then tellthe victim that they have to take their finger-prints because they touched the money.”
He says the perpetrators would allegedly tellthe victim that there was a robbery somewhere.
“The suspects would then order the victim tohand over all his or her belongings ... ” saysVukubi. “That would be the last time the victimwould see the suspects.”

Local healthcare providers were honouredwith certificates and trophies during an in-formative ceremony on Friday in which thelatest TB, HIV and sexually transmitted in-fections statistics for the City of Cape Townwere revealed.
Mayoral committee member for health,Councillor Lungiswa James, started off theproceedings at the Goodwood Civic Centreby saying that the battle against these disea-ses is still far fromconclusion, but that consi-derable progress has nonetheless been made.
“We need to take collective responsibility,inform the community and encourage those
who have been exposed or those who aresymptomatic to come forward for testing andscreening,” she emphasised.
“An untreated TB patient can affect ano-ther 10 people in one year!”
She went on to reveal that the provincialhealth department has achieved an 83 per-cent cure rate in TB treatment.
“This is a great milestone and couldn’t ha-ve been achieved without our dedicated staffand NGOs.”
That was the very purpose of the ceremo-ny, which was conveniently held on WorldTB Day – to honour those who have takenup the fight to eradicate this disease, alongwith HIV and STIs.
She concluded: “Zero tolerance, zero stig-ma and zero deaths!”
After her speech, a video message fromArchbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu wasshown in which he recounted the time whenhe was on death’s doorstep due to TB.
Both he and former President Nelson Man-dela suffered from this disease, so it was ma-de clear that there should be no shame in be-ing diagnosed with TB.
“Our culture makes it seem as if it’s theworst possible thing that could happen to aperson,” he said.
“Something must be done! TB can be elimi-nated!
“If we all work together we can see a realreduction in the burden of TB. God blessyou.”
The stats were presented for the differentsubdistricts of Cape Town: the western regi-on includes Milnerton, Table View and DuNoon, the northern region includes Kraai-fontein and Brackenfell, while Tygerberg in-cludes Bellville, Parrow, and Goodwood.

Copper cable thieves have targeted apark next to Paarden Island and JustinStreet in Rugby, and there appears to bevery little that can be done about it.
According to a resident who lives right op-posite the park, Tony Vos, the criminalshave the temerity to even go as far as diggingup the cables in broad daylight.
An arrest have been made recently, butVos says this did not deter the other crimi-nals who have dug trenches since.
“It’s been going on for a year now,” saysVos. They dig the cables up and then removethe copper in the cable.”
According to him the lights in the park ha-ven’t worked for months.
“There are thorns in the park, no lightsand a deep hole near the children’s play ar-ea.”
A manhole, according to him, became un-covered a few weeks ago while the grass wasbeing cut, but the cover has never been re-placed.
“I have phoned the City of Cape Town be-fore, but they haven’t done anything aboutit.”
When asked if he had a reference number,he said none was given to him.
Ward councillor Bernadette le Roux saysthe council does indeed have knowledge ofthe situation.
“A joint operation between us, police andlaw enforcement to address issues such asthese and vagrants are being planned. Thereis a criminal element in the area which mustbe addressed as soon as possible,” she ad-mits.
Le Roux also pointed out that it was theauthority’s copper cable theft unit that ar-rested the theft suspect recently.
“Authorities have been working closelywith the Paarden Island City Improvement
District and have used their video foot-age to make the recent arrest,” she con-cludes.
The park isn’t fenced off and there arecurrently questions surrounding whichdepartment or company is in charge ofwhat section.
According to Vos, Metrorail and theCity of Cape Town owns parts of thepark, and it is difficult to complainaboutanything, because “everyone refers himto someone else”.

Goodwood police’s Constable Dean Snyders re-cently reacted to a robbery complaint in Mur-ray Street, and when he arrived on the scenethe complainant pointed out where the suspectwho stole a cellphone ran into.
According to spokesperson W/O WayneTheunis, Snyders search the place, but couldnot find the 24-year-old suspect anywhere.
He then decided to look in the bin and, lo andbehold, there was the suspect looking back.The man was immediately arrested on chargesof robbery.
Meanwhile, consts André Abrahams andRalph Steyn were patrolling Hugo Street lastweek tuesday when they saw two men walkingwith scaffolding.
When they investigated the suspects’ alibi,they found out that the scaffolding was stolenat a construction site in Giel Basson Drive. The24 and 27-year-old suspects were arrested.

The heat wave has been almost enough tomake one believe in global warming. Then,just when you think the “greenies” are right,you turn on the TV and see the biggest freezein Europe for decades.
From this you will gather that I have mydoubts about climate scientists. I also haveproblems with weather predictions, servedup on all the electronic media. This businessof a 30 or 60 percent chance of rain is weird.Why do we never have a 50 percent or an 80percent chance of rain?
Weather forecasters have an abundance ofinformation from satellites but they still getit wrong. One suspects that the whole job isturned over to computers which tell us thatthe temperature in Paarl will peak at precise-ly 37 degrees C. Wonderful, but how can theyknow the precise temperature at any givenlocation and still be so vague about the reallyimportant things like rain?
The heat wave also tells us importantthings about the way we live. In these infor-mal times most of us have shed a layer of un-
dergarments and things like jackets with col-lars and ties are on the way out.
Now we wear baseball caps and walkaround in a state of semi-un-dress at weekends. Any Arabfrom one of the desert tribeswould tell us that we are madand the only way to cope withreal heat is to cover up andkeep it out.
Our complete failure to un-derstand that can be seen inthe way we build houses. Allthose big windows and, worstof all, black roofs!
Solar water heaters havetaught us just how effective thecolour black is at absorbingthe radiation from the sun. Aone-square metre black panelcan provide hot water for a family so you canimagine how much heat is absorbed by awhole roof.
We try to deal with the problem by install-ing layers of insulation above the ceiling butall this does is trap the heat in the roof space
where it builds up, drying out the timber andcausing maximum expansion and contrac-tion. A black cover over a confined and well
insulated space is the way tomake a solar oven! All roofsshould be painted white be-cause white reflects both lightand heat, making it much easi-er to deal with the heat thatdoes manage to penetrate – asany desert Arab will tell you.
Just imagine how much lesselectrity would be used by re-ducing the demand for air con-ditioning. We would all be-come nicer people if we lived incooler homes. Productivitywould increase. We would allbecome, cooler, wiser, sanerand more productive.
All the “greenies” have to do is ban black,red, grey and green roofs in hot countriesand they will change the world. All roofsshould be white, preferably ceramic white,so that they become heat shields to keep outthe solar radiation.

The traffic situation aroundschools often leads to much frustra-tion for drivers especially when in-considerate parents choose tobreak the law.
It is for this reason that City ofCape Town traffic officers conduct-ed a scholar transport blitz lastweek in an effort to ensure thatlearners arrive at school safely.
Special emphasis was placed onscholar transport vehicles whichtransport learners to schools and
creches across the city, during theoperation on Thursday morning.
Officers also concentrated on par-ents who, while dropping their chil-drenoff at schools, causemajor traf-fic congestion through their gener-al disregard for traffic laws.
During the operation in TableView a total of 62 offences were re-corded.
Six motorists were arrested fornot having the necessary permitsand their vehicles were impounded
– one driver was only 19 years old,had no professional driving permit,no valid driving licence and was op-erating an unlicensed vehicle on apublic road.
One suspect was arrested fordriving with a false licence tokenand number plates, while anotherwas arrested on six warrants of ar-rest valued at R5 000.
While four of the city’s markedpatrol vehicles were outside TableView Primary School and the offic-
ers were conducting enforcementoperations, a motorist drove on thewrong side of the road while ayoung girl was crossing the pedes-trian crossing. The motorist thenparked in the bay facing oncomingtraffic to drop off her passenger –another school-going child. The mo-torist – who only had a learner’s li-cence – was charged, along with hergrandmother, who allowed her todrive.A further 318 traffic fines alsowere issued in Bottelary Road,
Kraaifontein (61), NooiensfonteinRoad, Kuils River (56), MusicaLane, Macassar (37), Thlati Street,Helderberg (76) and Spine Road andMew Way, Khayelitsha (88).
Drivers who transport schoollearners for reward must be in pos-session of a valid driving licence, aprofessional driving permit, and anoperating licence.
All scholar transport operatorshave to comply with the provisionsof the National Transportation Act.

A group of cyclists completed the ArgusCycle Tour this year as part of an aware-ness campaign around autoimmune dis-eases.
The Join the Fight Against AutoimmuneDiseases team supporting Abbott Laborato-ries braved it out to complete this challengingrace over 110km in 43°C heat.
The team consisted of some of the key pre-scribing doctors, their practice staff, Abbottstaff and one patient suffering from psoriaticarthritis.
Nicholas Sessions from the southern sub-urbs has been living with psoriatic arthritisfor more than 15 years. A new cycling enthu-siast, Sessions has completed the Argus twicebefore.
He was in the first batch to leave the start-ing line at 06:42 as he could not be out in thesun too long because of his condition.
Sessions completed the race in about threeand a half hours, an amazing time for this in-spiring athlete.
“This year was quite different. We are ex-pecting our third child and I didn’t train near-ly as much as I did for last year’s race whichI completed in three hours and nine min-utes,” Sessions said.
He is adamant that exercise is the key togood health.
“Exercise is so imperative to life – not on-ly to keep fit but also the balance it givesyour life.”
An engineer by day, Sessions runs hisown company with his brothers. He is mar-ried with two toddlers, with another due inSeptember.
He is thankful for the change Humira –a tumour necrosis factor (TNF) blockermedicine that can lower the ability of a per-son’s immune system to fight infections –has brought to his life.
“At one stage I was drinking handfuls ofpills each day. I couldn’t wind down my carwindow and didn’t think I would be able toclimb Lions Head. Now I inject myself twicea month and I can get on with my life,” hesaid.
The specialist doctors who formed part ofthe team were impressive in their times. Asmany of them are keen athletes in their ownright, it was not surprising.
Nurse Joyce Doggart from Eversdal wasalso part of the cycling team and completedher first Argus this year.
The idea for the Abbott team to competewas that of Ansie Vorster from Bellville. Asales representative for Abbott, Vorster hasbeen experiencing symptoms of an autoim-mune disease over the past few months. Shehas however not been officially diagnosed.

Robin Carlisle, the minister of transportand public works in the Western Cape lastweek said he wants Metrorail “to adjustits planned fare increase from the totallyunacceptable 27 percent planned for 1April, to a single digit figure.”
Although there had been no increases infares from 2003 and 2010, Metrorail’s planned27 percent increase for this year added to2011’s 33 percent increase, means therewould be an effective 60 percent rise in faresin just two years.
“This increase is totally unacceptable forthe following reasons, which I have dis-cussed with Metrorail’s Western Cape re-gional manager Mthura Swartz,” he said.
These include the continuing extremely
poor service of Metrorail.“Instead of these huge ad hoc increases
there should be a small increase each year,not greater than the inflation rate.”
He also stated that 1 April is too soon foran increase to be implemented because itdoes not give commuters time to plan.
“It appears thatMetrorail’s budgeting tookinto account the projected electricity tariffincrease of 25,9 percent for 2012/2013, whichhas since been adjusted to 16 percent. Actualcosts will thus be lower ... and they shouldhave adjusted their increase accordingly.
“It appears that there is no end in sight tothe indignities inflicted on Metrorail cus-tomers, who for years have borne the bruntof bad planning and a lack of investment inrolling stock,” Carlisle said.

Not everyone is prepared to take the on-slaught when TygerBurger informs theirreaders about a valuable idea for “givingresponsibly”.
Last week, TygerBurger reported on a foodvoucher programme where Pick n Pay cus-tomers can buy food vouchers to give tohomeless people instead of giving money.
The article states that the vouchers costR20 per pack of four R5 vouchers which canbe redeemed against purchases of food andother approved basic products at any Pick nPay outlet countrywide. They cannot be beused to obtain cigarettes, alcohol or narcoticssuch as glue or thinners.
TygerBurger readerJohnWhaits,wantedto do his bit and went to Pick n Pay in Tyger-valley.
“They informed me that they had onlyquantities of five R10 vouchers at R50 perpack. I purchased a pack, but upon openingthe pack at home, found that the vouchersexpired on 31.12.2010. I intend returning thevouchers, but...I wonder how many peoplehave decided to give this scheme a miss dueto hitches such as the above!”
In a very prompt response, Carol DaleKuys, financial manager of the BroccoliProject, tells TygerBurger that the R50booklets were from the first print-run ofvouchers, and that the expiry date was sim-ply a legal requirement, but that the vouch-ers do not expire.
The R50 booklets with the R10 vouchers can,however, still be redeemed anywhere or can beexchanged with two R5 vouchers.

Metro Policedeserve creditThis newspaper receives “spin” stories ona daily basis, always positive news aboutthis and that company’s success, blah blahblah. To put a positive spin on every eventis what a PR company is paid to do.
They also get kudos if the press releaseis printed as is, without the journalist ask-ing pertinent questions or double check-ing the statistics.
Sadly, we live in a world where deskjockeys have taken over the media land-scape. It’s so much easier to simply “copyand paste” than to go out there and get thereal story. Part of our job is to sift throughthese “spin” stories, separate the wheatfrom the chaff.
The Metro Police are excellent in send-ing out press releases of recent successes.The one that landed in Monday’s inboxwas about them having arrested 34 peopleover the weekend for a myriad of offences,including drug possession and drunk driv-ing.
They’re doing their job, that’s for sure.And then they get flak from the public.Flak for making them late, for inconven-iencing them. The same people enjoy liv-ing in relative peace, hoping the police areout there doing their job.
It’s time to make a mindshift and givethe Metro Police the credit they deserve.So next time you get stopped at a road-block, adjust your attitude while you wait.

Winter will make it worseWith winter fast approaching and nights be-coming longer I would like to refer the pow-ers that be to the following (this refers toBlaauwberg Road, Table View).
With the street lighting being removed forroughly 1 500m either side of the road, willpedestrians have clear access as follows:
1. With large cavities and holes excavatedon both sides with very little danger warn-ings or barricades for protection. Also verylittle clear access for bus and taxi commuterstravelling to and from work.
2. With underfoot conditions being veryuncomfortable for the elderly, infirm, wheel-chair-bound people and mothers with pramswhich will be made more difficult with mud
and slush a further problem.3. Why were both sides of the road dug up
and lights removed and then left untouchedfor two or three months when it would havebeen more cost effective and far less incon-venience to all concerned if one side of theroadwasworkedon in the shortest time fromstart to finish.
I wonder why our councillor, HeatherBrenner, has not observed these problemsand reported them to the City Engineer andthe City Council. I also wonder who will beresponsible for any injuries or caused by theshoddy workmanship of Martin and East.

I think thiscity dreamsfor you ...You recently ran two articles in the TableView edition – one regarding trolley guysand one about the MyCiTi roadworks.
With regard to the MyCiTi links youhad comments from people praising theroadworks/buses. Maybe you shouldhave spoken to some of the residents wholive along the route. Instead of having busand fast traffic lanes 50 or so yards awayfrom their properties with trees andshrubs to buffer the sound, now they havetraffic lanes (and cycle lanes) butted rightup against their back walls with all theshrubs removed. This means instead ofgreenery you now get some goon gawkingonto your property along with high noiselevels and greater vulnerability. This haswiped thousands of rands off the value ofproperties, but the city doesn’t give adamn! How about compensating the resi-dents along the route?
Residents have been putting up with theroads being dug up for the past threeyears. Had the city opened the N7/Sand-own Road link before digging up and re-stricting every other road in the area theproblems being encountered now wouldbe much less.
Public transport will not reduce thetraffic to nothing as dreamed by the city.The links only go to the Civic Centre – noteveryone works at the Civic Centre. A stu-dent going to UCT from Table View for ex-ample cannot get to the campus before lec-tures even if they take the first bus. Theservice is deeply flawed.
On the subject of the trolley guys, thewriter obviously didn’t live in the area.Nor did he go to the so-called green areaswhere these guys camp out. If he had hewould have seen all the rubbish that hasbeen taken from the bins and spreadacross the area, not to mention the humanexcrement and damage that is done bythese guys turning the area into a dump.
How can you expect residents to be sym-pathetic to these people when they justempty your bin, throw all the rubbisharound the streets and walkways and turnthe public areas into toilets.

Left lane irritationI’ve seen a lot of reports regarding traffic inthe Table View area and thought I wouldshare this with you.
Every morning, at the intersection ofBlaauwberg and the R27 (at the BaysideMall) there seems to be a problem.
There is lots of congestion and most of thetraffic is heading towards Cape Town CBD.
There are two lanes turning left onto theR27, from Blaauwberg Road and a lot of mo-torists are using the two straight lanes, toturn left on the R27.
As in the photograph (below), on thismorning (22 March), it happened to be tominibus taxis but they are not the only onesthat do it. It does cause quite a lot of aggrava-tion of drivers that are rightfully in the twoleft turn only lanes and causes even morebacklog further down Blaauwberg Road.
I have sent this email and pics to MerleLourens, (Cape Town Traffic Department),traffic officers in the area and at the intersec-tions. I know that the resources of the trafficdepartment is limited, but we’d love to seethem in the area more often.

“Snowy’s sister is very sad,” confirmsCatherine Alexander, before adding thather human family is just as distraught.
The Alexanders have dropped off pam-phlets atmanyhouses and flats in thevicin-ity, but no one has to date given them anyhints as to Snowy’s whereabouts, despitea monetary reward on offer.
“We sent her to be sterilised, but she es-caped during the night. She was probablya little ‘psychotic’ after the episode,” smilesAlexander.
According to Alexander, the vet Dr Nev-ille Goldberg, has been very supportive inthe continuing cat-hunt and he has evenpaid for an advert in this newspaper.
“People might not even know she is ontheir property! She is white with a blacktail and a black patch on her ear.”

Hake is a rich source of protein andit is also low in fat – the perfect foodto form part of a healthy diet. Justopen a pack of frozen hake, a tin oftomato puree and a container of or-ange juice … and add the rest of theingredients from your grocery cup-board. Best of all, you can keep thepickled fish in the fridge for severaldays. Usually vinegar is used in pick-led fish, but in this Moroccan recipethe acid required to preserve the fishcomes from the orange juice and thetomato puree.
This recipe is heart-friendly,wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-freeand egg-free.
1 x 450g packfrozen hake me-dallions or 1 x500 g pack fro-zen hake steaks
15ml (1 tbsp)olive or sun-flower oil
1 large onion,sliced
1 mediumyellow, red ororange pepper,coarselychopped
um curry powder5ml (1 tsp) ground cumin (jeera)125ml (½ cup) raisins1 x 410g can tomato puree125ml (½ cup) water375ml (1½ cups) pure orange juice
(use 100% pure fruit juice, no sugaradded)
10ml (2 tsp) white sugarsalt and milled black pepper to
tastefresh coriander (dhania) to gar-
nishlemon or lime wedges to servetoasted slivered almonds to gar-
nishPoach the frozen fish. Drain and
cool. Break into large chunks and re-move any small bones. Set aside.
Heat the oil in a pot. Sauté onionand pepper. Remove from the heat.Stir in garlic, curry powder, cuminand raisins. Stir for a few seconds.Add tomato puree, water, orangejuice and sugar. Return to heat.Bring to the boil, reduce the heat andsimmer uncovered for 6 to 7 minutes.Remove from heat. Gently stir in thecooked fish. Season with salt andblack pepper. Allow to cool complete-ly. Transfer to a non-metal container(a 2F plastic ice-cream containerworks very well). Cover and storeovernight in the fridge for the fla-vours to develop.
Serve cold or at room temperaturewith lemon or lime wedges. Garnishwith fresh coriander (dhania) and, ifpreferred, sprinkle with toasted al-mond slivers (see tip below). If youarenot allergic or intolerant towheator gluten, you can serve it with cous-cous or wholewheat or rye bread.
The fish will keep in the fridge for3 days. Serves 5.Tip: To toast slivered almonds,
place almonds in a dry pot or fryingpan and heat over medium heat, stir-ring often. Remove almonds from potor pan as soon as they start to turngolden brown.

Research has shown that thosewho vandalise municipal prop-erty are youths between 14 and20 and everybody’s help is need-ed to root out this problem.
Alderman James Vos, chairmanof Subcouncil 3 said on Thursday22 March that repair and replace-ment of the signs is extremely cost-ly.
“I recently undertook an inspec-
tion of all the road signs and otherimportant signage applicable topedestrian safety and was shockedat the defacement,” Vos said.
This followed a number of inci-dents reported to his office duringthe course of the month.
“This degrades the environ-ment, creates the perception thatmatters are out of control and asa result the values of homes andbusinesses deteriorate.”
He called on parents, teachers,youth leaders and the youth to as-
sist the city in this regard.He said he was convinced that
this was nothing other than van-dalism.
“Council cannot solve this so-cial problem in isolation,” he said.
He said damaging municipalproperty is a serious criminal of-fence and that matters were wors-ened by people stealing the signsfor scrap metal.
Vos urged people to phone thepolice or Metro Police with any in-formation.
“All reports will be treated con-fidentially and even anonymousreports will be welcomed,” hesaid.
Vos stressed that assistance wasdesperately needed in providingthem with information whichcould lead to the conviction ofthose responsible for the destruc-tive, deplorable and totally unnec-essary damage to municipal prop-erty.
He continued by saying roadsigns are inportant indicators for
the safety of motorists and pedes-trians alike.
“Damage to these signs createsan unsafe and potentially danger-ous situation,” Vos said.
He said the city constantly en-deavours to make main roadsmore aesthetically pleasing withlandscaped entrances and centermedians, only to see signs ran-domly broken and defaced.

The organisation Home of Hope will be hosting its se-venth annual charity golf day at the Milnerton GolfClub on 10 May.
The event is one of the home’s major fundraising pro-jects of the year.

De Klerk is a regular visitor at the
Rust-en-Vrede Gallery. During oneof his frequent visits he decided tomake a scale model of the Otto Bachbaby grand piano in the gallery.
This mammoth task started inSeptember 2011 and af-ter spending 1 256hours on this project, itis finally completed.No detail was over-looked, from the littlewheels that turn rightdown to the movingfoot pedals. The pianoalso has a speaker atthe bottom throughwhich piano music canbe played. Big Bay Nippers continued theirseason’s good form when theywon the Lifesaving WesternProvince Nipper Championshipheld at Milnerton recently.
This championship has beendominated by the Fish Hoek Life-saving Club for the last 20 years.
In the u-10 girls’ group Pascale deFreitas won the body board, runswim run, surf swim and board cat-
egories and also placed third in thebeach run event. De Freitas was al-so the u-10 Victrix Ludorum withfour gold medals and one bronze.
Connor Rautenbach took the hon-ours in the run swim run, board,body board and surf swim catego-ries. These achievements securedhim the u-10 Victor Ludorum prizewith four gold medals.
In the body board relay Big Baymade a clean sweep by taking the
first three places.In the u-12 girls’ category Kari
Steyn took gold in the run swimrun, surf swim, body board, boardand the Iron Nipper. Her five goldmedals gave Steyn the u-12 VictrixLudorum.
In the boys’ events Tiago Gon-salves placed first in the beachsprints, Tiago de Freitas came sec-ond in the board and Romano deFreitas won the beach run and
came second in the body board andbeach sprint. Members of the BigBay u-12 team also won the boardrelay and the Taplin relay.
In the u-14 girls Kristin Bellinganwon gold in the surf swim, runswim run and Iron Nipper. She alsowas third in the body board and sec-ond in the board. Bellingan was alsothe Victrix Ludorum with threegolds, one silver and one bronzemedal.
In the u-14 boys category Jason-Lee Bambies took second in the
flags while Craig Willars took thirdin the board.
Five of Big Bay’s Nippers: KariSteyn, Jordan Bosman, Romano DeFreitas, Blake Kelly and KristinBellingan, were selected to takepart in the Inter-Regional Competi-tion to be held before the SA NipperNationals.
Big Bay Nippers hope to be ableto continue their good form at theSA Nipper Nationals which will beheld in Port Elizabeth from 30March to 1 April.

Team captains Jacques Holloway and Kristin Bellingan with the winner’s trophy after the nippers of the Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club won the recentWP Championships at Milnerton.
The A-team of Milnerton SquashClub remains in the top half of thefirst division after a good homewin over Fish Hoek last week.
The first two matches of theevening both went Milnerton’sway, with Pikkie Swanepoel(number three) and MikhailSchabort (number four) both win-ning 3-0, making a win for theteam a near certainty.
Matt Marshall raced to a 2-0
lead. Fish Hoek’s John RossMaloch made a spirited fightbackto win the third game 12-10, butMarshall regained concentrationand made light work of the game,winning 3-1 and handing Milner-ton the fixture irrespective of thelast match’s result.
The top player match-up sawGary Wheadon up against Rod-ney Durbach, former nationalchampion and ranked as high as
22 in the world at his prime.Durbach came out firing, clear-
ly on a mission to salvage somepoints for Fish Hoek.

The cloudy blanket stretched over TableMountain early afternoon was a clearsign that the south-easter would be mak-ing an appearance for the final event ofthe Laguna Mall kiteboarding series onWednesday.
A steady 18 to 23 knots wind blew as thestarting signal was given just past 18:00 forthe slalom race.
A broken propeller on the lifesaving boatafter hitting a rock while setting the buoysfor the course diagram meant a slight delayto the start.
As things gotunderway itwasColinHeck-roodt and Oswald Smith that were chomp-ing at the bit. Mere metres separated the twokiters in a race that lasted 18 minutes.
Heckroodt took the honours as Smithcrashed out at the last jibing mark in an at-tempt to pass Heckroodt. Dean Galant whowas in top form took third place.
In the women’s category it was Iva Lopezfollowed by Mareike Brase from Germanyand previous series winner Caroline Hoes-sack.
In the masters’ category another Germankiter Armin Wohlgemuth reigned supreme.He was followed by Clintan Santillan and Pe-ter Petersen.
Junior competitor Dylan Adriaans fin-ished in an very commendable sixth placeand is sure to improve even further when thenext series starts in October.
The final overall standings for this seriessees Colin Heckroodt (North) win the men’sdivision, with Oswald Smith (Airush) sec-
ond and Grant Ross (Cabrinha) third.In the Masters’ category Clintan Santillan
