BIG HONOUR: STUDENT INVITED
Off to see Obama
ANDR BAKKES
Wherewere youwhen the inauguration of the
President of the United States took place?
Most South Africans would probably shrug
this question off and answer: In bed!
They will convince themselves that they
wouldnt really want to be part of some presi-
dents induction in some other country.
Yet, if they were given the chance to experi-
ence this historic event theywould grab itwith
both hands.
Third year student at the University of the
Western Cape (UWC), Bianca Marinus (23),
cant wait!
She has been critically selected and invit-
ed to attend the presidential inaugural confer-
ence in Washington, DC in January next year.
Marinus had to raise a substantial amount
of funds to cover her costs and during a fund-
raiser in Bothasig in September she did just
that.
The presidential inaugural conference is a
unique leadership development programme
that brings together outstanding young people
from around the world to directly participate
in the pageantry and ceremony of the inaugu-
ration of the president and vice-president of
the United States.
She glows with pride when she says: As a
young South African female to be receiving
this opportunity is a once-in-a-lifetime experi-
ence and to be representing my country, is a
great honour to uphold!
This A-aggregate student is active on many
fronts she is a career guidance practitioner,
a Sunday school teacher, and a Golden Key In-
ternational Honour Society member.
Golden Key, a Non-Profit Organisation
(NPO), has chapters at about 390 universities
across the globe andonly the best achievers are
invited to belong to it. Its responsibilities cen-
tre around community outreach programmes.
A handful of representatives of this NPO is
selected to attend the inauguration and Mari-
nus heard in June that she will be one of them.
I was shocked! she laughs.

She accepted the invitation without hesita-
tion, but the funds needed for such a trip
were a problem.
Thats when she decided to hold a fund-
raiser in the Bothasig Community Hall.
With the help of ward councillor James
Vos and 250 guests the gala event was a
smashing success.
With theirhelp shehasnowpurchasedher
ticket and will be flying on 20 December, to
attend the inauguration in themiddle of Jan-
uary.
Now the anxiety and excitement really
starts to set in, she adds.
The bright-eyedMilnerton resident has no
doubt that by attending this programme in
America, it will greatly assist her in becom-
ing a teacher of influence immersed in a
global perspective.
This will be a powerful experience, and
enable me to interact with many prominent
men and women whommost of us only read
about in the news, she says.
Since community service is her passion
she is convinced that this experience will
stand her in good stead.
She reasons that she will learn how to be
more persuasive and strategic, whichwould
equate to getting more people to help her in
community outreach projects.
She concludes emphatically: For all those
out there, I want to say that one should take
every opportunity available and put your-
self out there! Always go the extra mile and
never be stagnant. To the younger people
never conform to mediocrity!
Bianca Marinus will
be representing South
Africa at the United
States presidential
inauguration in
January.

Natanael Cupido with the
confiscated dagga.
A tip-off by a member of the Brooklyn com-
munity resulted in the arrest of a suspected

dagga with a total street value of R30 000 in
the dealers possession.

legedly selling dagga to users and dealers

As a result a 25-year-old manwas arrested
and charged with dealing with dagga.

Emma still battles cancer
ESM ERASMUS
A brave little eight-year-old girl of Oakdale
with cancer touched the hearts of people
and in true Christmas spirit a sum of
R22 270was raised in only twoweeks to help
cover her medical costs.
TygerBurger reported on Emma Fouries
desperate fight against cancer in October.
A reader, Debrah Grasso of Durbanville,
was so touched by Emmas story that she
decided to raise funds for Emmas medical
accounts to help lift the financial strain on
the family.
She approached the school of her daugh-
ter, Gabriella, the Kids Can Pre-primary
School in Kenridge, to do a raffle competi-
tion in aid of Emma.
The school also held a bandana day in Oc-
tober to raise aboutR1 300 for theSunflower
Fund.
In twoandahalfweeksweraisedR22 270
for Emma.
It blew me away how everyone just
pulled together tomake this happen in such
a short period of time. I couldnt do this raf-
fle without sponsors. I approached a few
people who were so willing to sponsor priz-
es. Not one person turned me away, Deb-
rah said.
I hope that this money will help Emma
and her family through this very difficult
time. All the kids at Kids Can Pre-Primary
send all their love to Emma, she said.
People have also deposited between
R8 000 and R10 000 in her parents bank ac-
count after the article.
Emma had to go for an intense radiation
session yesterday again after it was discov-
ered that the pain in her right shoulder is
caused by another cancerous lesion.
Emma has to receive morphine every
four hours now since 20 November to re-
lieve the pain. The radiationwill enable us
to ease off on the morphine, Debrah said
hopefully.
Although Emma only spent the first
month and third term this year at school at
Gene Louw Primary School, she bravely
worked hard at home and her marks were
so good that she was now put to Grade 3.
Her teacher came to her to give private
lessons at home. Her grade R teacher, who
is also a remedial teacher, also helped to
bring Emma up to date with her school
work.
They were awesome and helped where
they could.
There are two new lesions in Emmas
body one in her right hip and one in her
left knee. They are not causing any symp-
toms at present, Natalie said.
Emmawas first diagnosed with cancer in
2008 only six months after her sister was
born with an abnormal heart condition.
Anyone who wishes to assist in any way,
can send an email to Natalie at
A smiling Emma is here with
her younger sister, Alex (5)
in October during a stay at
a hotel in the Waterfront,
which was sponsored by a
donor.

U3Awraps up 2012
with a photochat

The University of the Third Age (U3A)
Blaauwberg branch wrapped up its 2012 ac-
tivities on 27 November, with a screening
of an audiovisual presentation bymembers
of the U3A Photochat group.
Thiswas followed by the annual year-end
finger food get-together, at the Milnerton
Library hall.
For the first time in its three year histo-
ry, U3A Blaauwberg was in a position to
make donations to three charities.
Chairperson Joy Wellbeloved, together
with vice-chairman Ivar Drew, and Ivor
Shaskolsky handed over donation certifi-
cates of R5 000 each to representatives from
NSRI Melkbosstrand, Huis Zonnekus, and
West Coast Womens Parliament.
Fundraising is not the prime objective
of U3A, but due to skilful management of
income from membership fees and raffles,
the committee decided todonate someof the
surplus among three local charities, ex-
plained U3 Blaauwberg chairperson Joy
Wellbeloved.
The NSRI was an easy choice, following
a popular presentation to members during
2012, while Huis Zonnekus and West Coast
Womens Parliament are NGOs in our area
who share U3As founding principles of on-
going care and stimulation of the elderly,
she added.
Stimulating
The main focus of U3A is to improve the
quality of life of people of mature age, en-
couraging the maintenance of intellectual
capacity and facilitating the sharing of
skills through stimulating programmes of
learning and teaching, as well as the social
contacts formed through these.
Speakers talk on varied topics at the
monthly meetings. Then there are the op-
portunities to participate in regular small
groups, for a variety of activities including
foreign languages, learning new skills or
playing board and card games.
U3A members offer to share their talents
and skills with fellow members on a volun-
tary basis, by holding group meetings in
their homes. Over 30 courses/groups are on
offer covering indoor activities such as
bridge, creative writing, travel, yoga, wild-
life DVDs; outdoor activities include bird-
watching, as well as day outings and longer
coach trips.
Our activities are very affordable for re-
tirees. The annual membership fee is a
modest R30, and participation in our group
activities is R5 per meeting. We are a non-
profit organisation and costs are kept to an
absoluteminimum. The name of our organ-
isation says it all. Retirement constitutes
the Third Age when older people have the
time to explore activities which they could
not do during their working careers, Well-
beloved said.
Lifelong learning
The seeds for Lifelong Learning for Ol-
der People were sown at the Summer
School of the University of Toulouse in
France in 1972. In 1982, U3A started in Bri-
tain with the goal of providing educational,
creative and leisure opportunities in a
friendly environment. U3A now operates
worldwide, fromEurope toAsia, theAmeri-
cas, and Australasia.
U3A reached South Africa in 2000, star-
ting in Cape Town and spreading rapidly
throughout the country. There are eight
branches in the Western Cape and Over-
berg, including Hermanus and Somerset
West.
Blaauwberg U3A was launched on 28
April 2009, to serve the residents of the Mil-
nerton/greater Table View area. Driving
the initiative was Silvia Schrire, who origi-
nally broughtU3A to SouthAfrica, aided by
all the people from the greater Table View
area, who were existing members of U3A
but wanted a more local chapter.
Founder members Andree Lombard, El-
mara Willis, and Una Graven continue to
serve on the committee, as does the first
chairman, Rod Hulley. Membership conti-
nues to expand and currently stands at 434.
General meetings are held on the last Tu-
esday, every month, at 10:30, in the Milner-
ton Library Auditorium.
VMore information can be found at the U3Awebsi
te, http://www.u3a.org.za as well as details of
weekly courses and monthly speakers. Enquiries
may also be directed to Membership Secretary, Rod
Hulley, on 021 556 4426.

wonders vandiewreld ingehuldigword.
berg gehang. n Mens kon darem n stukkie
Tafelberg
sels. Hy het Suid-Afrika geprys vir sy puik
deelname aan die stemproses omTafelberg
as een van die sewe nuwe natuurwonders
uit 440 nominasies wreldwyd aan te wys.
Sowat 100miljoen stemme iswreldwyd ty-
dens di proses uitgebring.
Patricia de Lille, Kaapstad se uitvoeren-
de burgemeester, het haar trots uitge-
spreekoorTafelberg enKaapstad sepresta-
sie. Sy het aangedui dat di wreldbekende
baken reeds n aansienlike toename in be-
soekers ontvang het sedert die aankondi-
ging vroer vanjaar.
modoeiland in Indonesi.

The jolly spirit during Milnerton Pre-Pri-
marys Christmas Carol evening was high-
ly contagious. One smile inevitably snow-
balled into a chorus of amusement and soon
the optimism was absolutely tangible.
Parents were invited to the end-of-year
function, where the schools learners were
awarded with certificates for their achieve-
ments and then the adorable children per-
formed an entertaining show by singing
Christmas Carols.
Every adult mustve been transported to
a time when life wasnt quite so complicat-
ed.
An impressive rendition of various fa-
vourite carols hung in the air long after the
show, despite the howling wind doing its
best to spoil the proceedings.
The vigour some of the kids put into a
simple song added to the enjoyment, while
other children sangwith such serious looks
on their faces that every heart was touched.
A quote by social activist, Henry Ward
Beecher, perhaps sums up proceedings
when he said: Children are the hands by
which we take hold of heaven.
Chlo Wallace (4) get into the mood with

Jayden Basson (5) sings Silent Night with his
serious face.
Little Aidan Williams (4) rings in the Christ
mas cheer with gusto.

Settlement gets garden and lights
Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, listens intently to community
member, Khaya Nozombile. PHOTOS: ANDR BAKKES
ANDR BAKKES
A section in Mtshini Wam informal settle-
ment in Joe Slovo Park is quickly becoming
a sterling example of how a poor community
can work with other roleplayers to improve
their living conditions.
Mayoral committee member for safety
and security, JP Smith, was one of the high
profile dignitaries that recently met in the
heart of a reblocked section inMtshiniWam
known as New Town.
TygerBurger reported recently in the arti-
cle New Town shapes up on the massive
strides taken by the community and theCity
of Cape Town regarding the reblocking.
Now evenmore initiatives, such as the in-
stallation and piloting of solar bulbs and
low-tech vertical vegetable gardens, have
been implementedandmadepublic in the in-
formal settlement.
Last week three informal dwellings were
retro-fitted with these bulbs and vertical
vegetable gardens as part of a pilot pro-
gramme.
The project is designed by Capetonians
Stephen Lamb and Andrew Lord and will be
conducted on a small scale in order to estab-
lish its feasibility.
The vertical gardens have been designed
specifically for areas where there are limit-
ed space.
There are also plastic doors protecting
it from theft or damage by the wind.
The solar light bulbs are solar chargedand
can light a shack for almost awhole dayafter
charging with just half a days sunlight.
The pilot project will create opportunities
for livelihoods and nutrition, and also aims
to reduce the spread of fires in informal set-
tlements.
Smith focused more on the reblocking in
his keynote address.
My work is the sharp end of the stick, so
my reputation is really someone who does
the tough stuff and not the feel good stories.
This is a place where the intelligent design
converges with common sense. We have had
major problems with fires around the city,
but since 2005 we have done massive re-
sourcing of the Fire Department.
We cannot keep investing in this depart-
ment and expect the fire mortality rate to
comedown, unlessweput a fireman in every
shack to hold up the candles andkeep it from
falling over.
So were starting to invest in alternative
mechanisms and strategies. Most of these
are awareness training, he said.
Smith added that he is very proud of the
Mtshini Wam community and that reblock-
ing should ideally happen in every informal
settlement.
This stops fires from spreading so quickly
and also hastens the response times of fire
engines.
Thanduxolo Pekula puts great care into one of the vertical vegetable gardens.Dignitaries, roleplayers and the media all squeezed into this alleyway in New Town.

Crime fighters host family event
Residents and local children of Sanddrift enjoy a family day that was hosted by the Milnerton
CPF, local neighbourhood watches and Milnerton police on Saturday.
LEON STEENKAMP
The consequences of domestic violence and
drug abuse was brought to the attention of
Sanddrift residents when local crime fight-
ing bodies hosted a family event here on Sat-
urday.
Members of theMilnertonCommunityPo-
lice Forum (CPF), Sector 1 subforum, Sector
1 Neighbourhood Watch and the newly
formed Sector 4 NeighbourhoodWatch host-
ed the event.
Children fromthe surroundingCommuni-
carehomeswere entertainedwith a jumping
castle, trampoline, and bike and horse and
cart rides.
Presents like balls, toy cars, frisbees and
dolls were also handed out along with hot-
dogs and 70 food parcels.
The event hosted in conjunction with the
Milnerton police was part of the 16 Days of
Activism against Women and Child Abuse
campaign.
Drug abuse is amajor problem in this area
andW/ODaphneDell distributedpamphlets
warning about the effects of tik usage and
domestic violence on families.
The day was also supported by the Apos-
tolic Church Tygerhof who provided soup
for local residents.
The event also served to create awareness
surrounding the role of the new Sector 4
NeighbourhoodWatchwhichwill operate in
the areas of Summer Greens and Sanddrift.
I saw some of the local drug dealers sit-
ting there and went to talk to them.
I told them we are looking forward to
working with them and that it will be fun,
said Leon du Preez, chairman of the Milner-
ton CPF.
Our mission is to take the streets back
from drug dealers and criminals and to do
this I want to establish a neighbourhood
watch in all the areas that are served by the
Milnerton police, he added.
Members of the Milnerton CPF, Sector 1 subforum, Sector 1 Neighbourhood Watch and the
Sector 4 Neighbourhood Watch attended the event in Sanddrift.

Dis lekker om
die Aussies te
wen, te wen!
Ons krieketspelers het nou onteenseglik
bewys hulle is die wreld se beste
toetsspan.
twee weg-toetsreekse agtereenvolgens teen
Hul bydraes in die reeksoorwinning was
deurslaggewend om ons bo te hou.
Die speler van die reeks? Die Aussie-be-
U is goed, Here, U
vergewe altyd weer,
U is getrou teen
oor di wat na U
roep om hulp.

In light of the various articles
about Summer Greens that
have found their way into your
newspapers, I would like to
express my deepest concern
over the negative emotions and
ideas that that are being
raised.
In the first article published,
from my understanding, the
main concern was about the
state of the suburbs public
facilities, amongst other things.
The council responsible for
maintaining public facilities
has responded positively to
this concern by repairing roads
for example Summergreens
Drive close to 7Eleven. A lot of
work is under way to install
new water pipes and electricity
cables, which is evident in the
water cuts and power cuts that
last for an hour or so in some
areas in the suburb. Not to
mention the City of Cape Town
trucks you find alongside some
roads with the staff undertak-
ing repair work.
Some of the illegal shops
mentioned in the first article
have closed down following
Leave foreigners out of the plot
To Kobi Lombaard and J van
der Spuy, who have written to
the TygerBurger regarding the
creche in Melkbos.
Clearly these incidents never
happened to your kids and for
your sake I hope your kids
were spared.
The people in Melkbos who
dont want to believe, must
unfortunately wake up and
smell the roses. Remember
where there is smoke there is
fire.
We as parents dont know
each other from a bar of soap
and this is certainly not an
isolated incident, why on earth
would the parents waste their
time, effort and money on such
a thing if it was not true?
Think about it, this is a perfect
place for a serial paedophile,
where small children attend a
creche in the so-called sleepy
Melkbos.
We trusted these people to
look after and care for our
children while we were at work
and they violated our trust
including our childrens trust.
My child unfortunately was
in that creche and my child
was never happy and we had
endless problems trying to find
out why my child didnt want
to go to creche. Unfortunately
for me I only found out much
later. To the serial paedo-
phile(s), you have messed with
the wrong families and you
deserve whats coming to you
all in court, justice will be
served.
Parents do your homework
before putting your children
into just any creche, there are
other good creches in Melkbos.

Concerned about child abuse at creche
On Sunday evening 25 Novem-
ber, Kelly-Jane Hart (23) and
Clyde Lewis (25) of Bothasig
spotted a homeless man abus-
ing a puppy on the N1 City
Bridge. When they tried to
rescue the tiny labrador, the
homeless man proceeded to
strangle her in front of them
so forcefully, she began to
vomit. Luckily the brave young
couple managed to extract the
traumatised puppy from him
and took her home.
Only five weeks old, much
too young to be away from her
mother, little Bella continued to
suffer from severe vomiting and
diarrhoea over the next few
days. Kelly-Jane and Clyde took
her to Bothasig vet, and blood
tests revealed that she had a
virus called
Parvo.
After
staying at
the vet
overnight,
it was
discovered
that Bella
had severe
complica-
tions in
addition to
Parvo that required a blood
transfusion. Even after the
transfusion and round-the-clock
care, she only had a 10 %
chance of survival.
Bella is still weak and on a
drip but doing much better.
Kelly-Jane expects the little pup
to be discharged later this
week.
The couple chose not to use
local animal welfare services as
they would have put Bella
down due to the exorbitant
costs of saving her. As stu-
dents, they are now struggling
to cover vet bills in the region
of R10 000.
The couple is looking for any
donations to help cover Bellas
vet fees.
Contact Kelly-Jane on
082 560 8789 if you can help!

licensing problems.Two good
examples are a vegetable shop
that was previously set up in a
garage and a cosmetics shop
that were both being operated
on Summer Greens Drive.
I now think residents pushing
for further articles to be
published about the suburb
have other ulterior motives.
The continuous mention of
foreign nationals residing in the
area is my greatest concern. It
is no crime to be a foreigner
and continuous association of
foreigners with crime and drugs
is discriminatory and xenopho-
bic. In the latest article, one
resident said We must stand
up and fight.
This can only lead to xeno-
phobia and more crime.
I therefore implore that you
stop publishing these articles.
The message has been heard by
relevant authorities and action
is being taken (rather than
residents) taking matters into
their own hands and commit-
ting crime.

With the festive season fast approaching,
northern suburbs residents are requested
to support organisations which take care of
the homeless, instead of givingmoney to in-
dividuals.
Wayne Aldridge, principal inspector for
the Displaced Peoples Unit (DPU) said over
the festive season, a hike is experienced in
the number of people donating money to
homeless people.
Especially tourists are known to give
money and other items to street people, he
said.
He advises the management of all hotels,
bed-and-breakfasts as well as guest houses
to pleasemake contactwith the City of Cape
Town to obtain pamphlets about the citys
Cape Town Cares, Give Responsibly cam-
paign.
This campaign is part of this administra-
tions efforts to build a Caring City by re-in-
tegrating homeless people into their com-
munity of origin wherever this is possible.
The campaign aims to inform businesses,
tourists and the public about the citys pro-
active and sustainable measures to tackle
homelessness.
Aldridge urged people to be vigilant over
the holiday season, and to inform guests to
do the same.
The vision of the Give Responsibly Cam-
paign is to significantly reduce and to ade-
quatelymanage the number of people living
on streets, with special emphasis on facili-
tating a holistic, developmental, integrated
and realistic approach.
The vision further includes the develop-
ment of programmes aimed at preventing
further migration to the streets.
The focus of this approach is to give street
people the necessary developmental assist-
ance, in order to achieve employment, ac-
commodation and reintegration with their
families and the community.
Most street adults survive through resi-
dents donations in the form ofmoney, food,
clothing, bedding or recycling material, as
well as odd jobs for money.
This, however, tends to reinforce and en-
trench the tendency towards life on the
street, particularly for adults who are ac-
customed to it.

Half of motorcyclists deaths occur in the
Cape Town metropolitan area.
Robin Carlisle,Minister of Transport and
Public Works, expressed his growing con-
cern at the evermounting toll ofmotorcycle
fatalities in the Western Cape.
While our overall road fatalities have de-
clined dramatically by 28 % over the last
three years, motorcycle deaths have actual-
ly risen by 11 %. All other categories, in-
cluding cyclists and pedestrians have de-
clined, said Carlisle.
The figures for October 2012 show that
this alarming trend is on the rise with 12
motorcyclists dying compared with 2 in Oc-
tober 2011.
Over 200 motorcyclists have died on our
roads in the last three years.
In part this is due to the increase in the
number of motorcycles, but too many mo-
torists are not sufficiently alert to both cy-
clists and motorcyclists.
Unfortunately, at the same time, many
motorcyclists ride at excessive speeds,
added Carlisle
Carlisle also reported that road deaths on
WesternCape roads in themonthofOctober
had risen by 6 % when compared to the
same month last year.
The comparative figures are: October
2008 124; October 2009 115; October 2010
108; October 2011 101; October 2012 108.

With Christmas coming up, having your pet
microchipped is of vital importance asmany
animals go missing over the festive period
for various reasons.
To avoid losing a pet, the public is urged
to have amicrochip installed under the skin
of their pets, which will prevent a great deal
of sorrow, should they ever go missing. The
simple procedure is short and almost pain-
less.
Pets that are lost, normally get picked up
and are taken to either vets or shelters like
the SPCA where they are scanned and
checked for microchips.
They can be taken to any vet, as well as
places like the AACL or SPCA to have the
microchip installed through a painless proc-
ess, which only lasts a few seconds.
Pets could virtually be found the same day
and will save a lot of stress as it is very trau-
matic for them to be lost and taken away
from the family and environment that is
known to them.
Before having a microchip installed, it is
suggested that an enquiry is done from a vet
as to what kind of microchip they are using,
as some of them have a yearly reactivation
fee and others require a once-off payment.
When having a microchip installed, ani-
mal owners are advised to make use of one
of the popular designswhich includeVerbac
or Identipet. Verbac and Identipet are the
most popular microchips, and Identipet has
a yearly fee of R55. The costs vary fromplace
to place but the procedure normally costs be-
tween R200 and R350.
Once the microchip is installed, the own-
ers details are stored on their databases. It
is advised that the contact details anddetails
regarding the pet are always up to date.
If pets weremicrochipped a few years ago,
it is advised to take them to the vet to be
scanned, in order to determine whether the
microchip can be detected, read, is outdated
or if they are able to locate the contact de-
tails.
Un-microchipped animals may never get
reunited with their families and it could re-
sult in thembeing euthanised as the kennels
are overflowing.

Kerke
wil
werkers
oplei
Kerke en kerkleiers het n behoefte
aan meer doelgerigte opleiding om
die spesifieke behoeftes van persone
wat voldag werk aan te spreek.
Dt blyk uit nmeningsopnamewat
Call42 gedoen het.
Die Call42-inisiatief is in Stellen-
bosch begin deur sakelui en het met
n nasionale vraelys afgeskop.
van God se roeping by die werk be-
tref.
Meer as 1 300 kerkleiers, studente,
jongwerkendes, sake-eienaars en sa-
kebedieninge het landswyd deelge-
neem aan die opname.
Verskeie Christene oor verskillen-
de sakesektore en denominasies
heen, word al hoe meer bewus van
wat God deur Christene in die sake-
wreld doen.
Alhoewel die afgelope paar jaar dui
op n wesenlike verandering op hier-
die gebied, sukkel baie Christene
steeds om roepingsgerig by die werk
te leef.
Call42 beoog om die uitdagings uit
te wys wat Christene ervaar, spesi-
fiek om tradisionele bedieningsbe-
ginsels in die gewonewerksdag toe te
pas.
bondige verslae wat beskikbaar is by
www.call42.co.za. Mense kan ook
aanteken op die webwerf om toekom-
stige resultate te ontvang.

Artscapes 20!20 revamp
LOUISA STEYL
The iconicArtscape Theatre Centre is getting aR1,5 bil-
lion facelift, turning it into a multifunctional cultural
hub.
Dubbed Artscape Live 20!20, the plan will see the 41-
year-old complex become one of the largest precincts
in Africa dedicated to the performing arts.
The revampwill see the addition of an amphitheatre,
a concert hall, new rehearsal spaces, new studio theatre
and a performance academy, amongst other changes.
Artscape chairman Prof Somadoda Fikeni, says alt-
hough the institution still needs to secure final appro-
vals and funds, they hope to create a cultural hub.
Our vision for 2020 is to create an epicentre of cultu-
ral excellence by using the performing arts industry as
a prime catalyst of economic growth, human develop-
ment and social cohesion, he says.
Artscape CEO,MichaelMaas, says the task of the the-
atre is to bring the arts to the people.
We cannot end with a performer on the stage, he
says. We must start with the children in the communi-
ties and find them and train them.
The proposed academy will offer training for 300 stu-
dents, while the Zip ZapCircus Schoolwill have its own
rigging studio.
Maas says the expansion will provide opportunities
for young talented people in the community.
Thanks to the CTICC, the BRT station and new deve-
lopments at Culemborg, Maas points out that the thea-
tre is no longer positioned on the outskirts of the
CBD, but is instead in a prime position to be used as
a multifunctional hub.
The proposed development plans also include four
double-height seminar rooms.
The concert hall, only the second of its kind in Cape
Town, will be acoustically treated, making it an ideal
venue for choirs, orchestras and even jazz performers.
New studio theatres will allow the theatre to be more
flexible. Not all stories are meant for the opera house
stage, Maas says.
The piazza in front of the theatre will be covered and
sheltered from the wind, to create an amphitheatre,
while the theatre will also sport a bigger parking area
after the revamp.
Maas points out that the entertainment industry has
become one of the fastest growing sectors in themodern
world. To keep pace with future growth and burgeo-
ning demand, Artscape has seized the opportunity to
expand its capabilities and capacity, Maas says.
