When looking at the sparkle in his eyes, he looks young for a 59- year-old, never mind a 79-year-old. Malgas was recently honoured by Western Cape education minister Donald Grant and received R1 500 for his excellence and persever- ance. “I feel proud,” he laughs again. Malgas has been going to an Abet centre for four years to further his education. “I always wanted to know as much as others do!” When asked if this was the sole reason for his educational adven- ture and whether it isn’t really just to see all the younger girls, he said wide-eyed and abruptly: “No!”, but then laughed wholeheartedly again. Malgas’s sense of humour is just as sharp as his mind. He is very interested in geogra- phy and history, but unfortunately these subjects were not part of the curriculum. As a result he decided to take Eng- lish, life orientation, biology and mathematics – to name but a few. He goes to class four days a week from 17:00 to 19:00 and “most of the time” gets homework as well. “I love maths,” he says deter- minedly. “It is important to think logically. If this happens, then that will not happen. Also, it’s good to know if King William’s Town is so many kil- ometres from Cape Town, then it will take so long to get there!” Malgas often visits his birthplace in King William’s Town, but he goes alone, since he never got married or had children. This is one of his regrets, as he ex- plains: “It’s good to know that you left something behind.” An outsider’s perspective could be that Malgas is indeed “leaving something behind” – an example of how one should always be fascinat- ed with things around you. He is also an inspiration to others and is living proof that it is never too late to learn. “Other older people should join me, although I can see they are not really interested. Milnerton police’s station com-missioner, Brigadier MariusStander, responded to claimsmade that the police missed abeat in an investigation, sayingthat the appropriate steps havesince been taken.
These claims were made in an ar-ticle in last week’sTygerburger, en-titled “Police delay questioned”,and involves the theft of R9 000.
An anonymous complainant wasfurious when he discovered that thepolice had allegedly failed to inves-tigate a matter of theft and as a re-sult missed the opportunity to viewthe CCTV video footage of the inci-dent.
Stander, however, assured read-ers that the police have indeedviewed the footage at two venues,but that it is “not usable” becauseone cannot clearly identify the per-petrators.
Four suspects apparently fol-
lowed a woman from an Absa bankin Montague Gardens where shewithdrew R9 000 and stole it fromher in a parking lot near CenturyCity on 9 January.
The woman’s husband said thathe viewed the centre’s footage andcould clearly identify the suspects,but Stander claims there is no clearindication that the people on thecentre’s cameras were the ones whorobbed her of her cash in the park-ing lot.
He admits, however, that the in-
vestigating officers should havecalled in specialists to analyse thefootage – which has since been de-leted – more closely.
“We are investigating this issueinternally and the proper steps willbe taken,” he continues.
“We also interrogated the manag-er of the bank and after watchingthe footage there is no proof thatsomeone from within the bankcould be involved,” he explains, be-fore adding that when he went to in-spect the bank personally – the in-
stitution was co-operating verywell with the authorities.
“We are always looking for pat-terns in these incidents, which wecall bank followings and it is vitalthe public is kept informed.”
Healso stated thatMontagueGar-dens in general and John MontagueCentre in particular are hotspotsfor crime and the public should bevigilant when in the vicinity.
As a result, centre managementhad installed the CCTV footagecameras fairly recently.
Police respond to ‘slow’ inquiry
A 35-year-old Chinese nationalwas arrested for illegally being inpossession of ivory and elephanttusks last week Wednesday.
The arrest was carried out atthe suspect’s business in Spear-head Business Park in MontagueGardens.
Lieutenant Colonel AndrèTraut, provincial police spokes-person elaborates: “The arrestfollowed after members of theSouth African Revenue Service
(SARS) conducted a routine in-spection at a courier companyand detected a consignment ofivory addressed to the suspect.
“An undercover operation bythe Hawks, SARS and NatureConservation was conducted andthe consignment was deliveredunder controlled circumstanc-es.”
Ivory products, elephant tusksand a cutting machine used tomanufacture ivoryproductswere
confiscated at the premises.The value of the items is esti-
mated at millions, however amore accurate amount will be de-termined later.

Action is being taken against thehomeless people, referred to as the“trolley brigade”, by City of CapeTown Law Enforcement.
Residents regularly complainthat the trolley brigade allegedlypose a safety threat and push theirshopping trolleys in the streets inbusiness and residential areas,leaving them there.
“I wish to reassure residents thatLaw Enforcement does take ac-tion,” says Richard Bosman, thecity’s executive director: Safety andSecurity.
“In a blitz operation over a two-week period in February, about 90trolleys were confiscated in TableView, Parklands, Sunningdale,Bothasig and Edgemead.”
When they impound the trolleysLaw Enforcement Officers providethe homeless people with blackplastic bags in which to store theirbelongings.
“Some residents insist that thehomeless people must be chargedwith theft, but this is very difficultto prosecute as they simply claimthat they found the trolleys next tothe road,” says Bosman.
“Shop owners are also loathe tolay charges against these people.The most effective solution is thatshop owners appoint securityguards to ensure that customersdon’t remove trolleys from theirpremises.”

People from all walks of life joined in onthe annual Century City Sports Festivalwhich took place this past weekend.
The race included a 10km Road Race, theCentury City Express, from Friday 2 Marchuntil Sunday 4 March.
Chris Blackshaw, CEO of the Century CityProperty Owners’ Association which repre-sents all stakeholders at Century City, saysthis was the fourth consecutive year theyhad staged the sports festival and it hadgrown exponentially.
“This year’s festival promises to be evenbigger and better than previous years,” hesaid.
Aimed at both corporate teams and indi-vidual participants and providing both par-ticipatory and spectator sports, the festivalwas again held in and around Central Parkand included fun, foodandentertainment forthe whole family.
The signature event of the festival was the10km Road Race, the Century City Express,which forms part of the Western ProvinceAthletics calendar.
Cash prizes were awarded to category win-ners and places with the first 1 000 finishersreceiving medals.
The festival also included corporate touchrugby tournaments, five-a-side corporatesoccer competitions, kermesse road circuitcycling races, junior and senior canoe mara-thons, western province trials for canoe po-lo, a dragon boat regatta as well as juniortouch rugby and soccer competitions. In ad-dition cricket has this year been added to themix with an under-11 six-a-side cricket tour-nament.

Volgens Bosman beoog die Stadom in die volgende vyf jaar die vei-ligheidspersoneel in die stad met200 personeellede per jaar te ver-

Volgens die voorsitter van dieveiligheids-en-sekuriteitsporte-feulje, Carin Brynard, het die ver-keersdienste oor die afgelope vyfjaar vanaf ’n “kreupel diens, in eenvan uitstaande gehalte verander,”en “haal sy haar hoed af” vir al dieverkeersmense wat sulke lang urewerk. “Operasioneel fokus ons tansop alle oortredings en spesifiek opspoedmeting, hoewel daar net 12 be-amptes (stadswyd) tans in hierdiespan is. Dwarsdeur die Stad is daarook 50 permanente spoedkamerasen een gemiddelde spoedafstands-meting wat in werking is. Die mees-te klagtes van lede van die publiekgaan oor mense wat die spoedgrensoortree, as gevolg van ’n kultuurvan roekelose bestuur wat onderpadgebruikers bestaan,” sê sy.
. Statistiek verskaf deur die Stadwys dat daar gedurende Januarie,’n totaal van 138 229 verkeersoortre-dings in die stad aangeteken is. Diehoogste hiervan is onder andere11 580 vir ongelisensieerde voertuieen 83 000 vir spoed.
Verkeersluitekort ’n groot krisis
In hierdie wêreld waarin ons leef isdaar baie stukkende verhoudinge.Ouer en kind wat kwaad is vir me-kaar. Vriende wat nie meer met me-kaar praat nie. Families wat metstywe nekke in vyandskap met me-kaar lewe. Kom ons gesels vandagoor versoening.
Die eerste vraag is natuurlik: watbeteken versoening? Versoeningbeteken om weer vriende te word.Om die stukkende verhouding regte maak. En wanneer ek sê dievriendskapsverhoudingherstel, be-doel ek ook in die huwelik, in fami-lies, tussenouer enkind, tussenkol-legas en ja, natuurlik, ook tussenvriende.
Versoening is wesenlik belangrikom vrede in jou eie gemoed te kry
en vrede met die een te kry met wiejy in onmin is. Versoening maak ge-sond. Versoening herstel weer dievriendskapsband. Haat bring ver-wydering, haat bring die dood, haatmaak dat jy later moet vlug.
Versoening is gewoonlik ’n pro-ses wat verloop vanaf die argumentof onmin wat die verwydering ge-bring het, tot daar uiteindelik ver-soening plaasvind. Belangrike ele-mente in die versoeningsproses is:
. Selfondersoek – vra jouself afwatter aandeel het jy gehad in dieonmin. Ondersoek jou eie motiewe.
. Vergifnis.
. Kommunikasie.
. Jy moet verskoning aanbied enjy moet ook verskoning aanvaar.
. Toewyding aan die herstelde
verhouding. Versoening bringgroei en ’n hartsverandering by bei-de partye is nodig.
Elemente wat versoening verhin-der, is haat en bitterheid; teleurstel-ling; woede; emosionele letsels; on-vergewensgesindheid en eie ego.
Versoening is soms baie moeilik.Versoening is sekerlik ook nie altydmoontlik nie – veral wanneer eenvan die partye onwillig is. Maarselfs in van die moeilikste omstan-dighede is dit soms tog moontlik.Die bekende geval van Amy Biehl,’n Amerikaanse student, wat op 25Augustus 1993 in Gugulethu inKaapstad vermoor is, is ’n voor-beeld van versoening. In 1998 is am-nestie aan die vier moordenaarsverleen en is hulle uit die tronk vry-
gelaat. Die Biehl-ou-erpaar het die uit-spraak gesteun, en in’n gebaar van versoe-ning, hande met diemoordenaars geskud.
Versoening is niealtyd nodig of selfswenslik nie. ’n Voor-beeld is waar ’n vroumishandel is in diehuwelik. Hier moetsy skoon breek enaangaan met haar le-we. Hier is nie sprakevan versoening nie,maar sy kan haar man vergewe.Vergifnis en versoening is nie die-selfde ding nie. As jy vir my kwaadis oor iets wat ek gedoen het, kan
jy my vergewe. Dangaan jy aan met jou le-we en ek met myne.
Versoening sê egterons het mekaar verge-we, maar nog meer,die vriendskapsver-houding word herstel.Ons is nou weer vrien-de na die breuk wattussen ons gebeur het.
Versoening betekenek groei van haat naliefde; van bitterheidna vergifnis; van woe-de na vrede; van hoog-
moed na nederigheid; van afsydig-heid na “laat ons praat”.

Sommige mense glo die bestemanier om hulle te help, is omkos of geld te gee, en ander glodie dakloses moet die koueskouer kry. Die meeste mensestem egter saam dat hulle opeen of ander manier van strateverwyder moet word.TygerBurger het verlede
week weer eens gepraat met ’nleser wat nou genoeg gehad hetvan die “trollie-brigade”.
Elizabeth Langeveld vanGoodwood is baie bekommerdoor die impak wat hierdie be-sonder arm mense op die buurt endie eiendomspryse het.
“Goodwood was altyd netjies –dit was ’n fees om hier te bly! Nouis dit 80% erger.
“As jy een hawelose persoonsien, dan is daar gewoonlik 10 an-der wat hom volg,” meen Lange-veld.
Die koördineerder van TASP(Tygerberg-assosiasie vir straat-persone), pastoor Jerry Louw,skat dat daar omtrent 600 hawelo-se mense in die noordelike voor-
stede is. Hierdie getal is heelwatmeer as ’n mens die misdadigerswat hulle as haweloses voorhou,byvoeg.
“TASP is daar om mense met ’nprobleem te help, en ons moethierdie probleem so vinnig asmoontlik oplos,” se Louw.
Volgens hom is die hawelosesnie net ’n seer op die oog nie, maarook op die omgewing.

“Dit is ’n komplekse probleem.As jy kos gee vir die persoon, danhandhaaf jy net die status quo...”
Langeveld het al probeer omklein werkies te gee vir die hawe-loses in die omgewing.
Sy het vullissakke vir almal ge-gee om die straat weer skoon temaak, en as hulle dit terugbring,dan gee sy vir hulle melk en brood.Maar dit het ook nie gewerk nie,want die volgende dag het sy ge-sien hoe hulle net die vuilgoed ver-skuif van een gebied na ’n ander.
Sy gaan voort: “As ons met hullepraat, dan word hulle aggres-sief, en partykeer wil hulleselfs ’n siviele saak teen onsindien!”
Die haweloses word baiekeer van een buurt na ’n andergeskuif deur die owerhede,maar volgens raadslede helpdit ook nie. Een buurt se oplos-sing word net die ander se pro-bleem.
Louw sê ook dat as iemandgeld gee vir ’n hawelose, dit indie meeste gevalle nie gebruikgaan word vir die doel waar-voor dit gegee is nie.
Daar is nou ’n inisiatief van dieraad om ’n geskenkbewys-pro-gram van stapel te stuur – wat be-teken dat die publiek in plaas vangeld, eerder ’n geskenkbewys aandie persoon kan gee. Met hierdiebewys kan hulle dan kos gaankoop by ’n spesifieke winkel.
Louw sluit af om te sê dat die pu-bliek verantwoordelik moet weeswanneer hulle die haweloses help.
“As mense geld wil gee, skenkdit eerder aan organisasies soosTASP, MES of nagskuilings,” vrahy.

Of jy nou ’n onderneming in ’n landelike of nie-landelike gebied van die Wes-Kaap bedryf, is jynet die persoon wat nou hier moet lees... Ons weet hoe moeilik dit deesdae is om ’n suksesvolleonderneming in baie dele van die platteland te bou – of selfs in dorpsgebiede wat nie te vervan ons groter stede of dorpe geleë is nie. Ons weet dat jy al die hulp wat jy van die provinsialeregering kan ontvang, sal waardeer. Dit is waarom ons dink jy die denke agter – en dieimplementering van – ons Plaaslike Ekonomiese Ontwikkeling (PEO) Groeifonds sal ondersteun.
Spesiaal vir jou daargestel, is die fonds se mikpunt om geleenthede vir groei-georiënteerdeondernemings soos joune te voorsien – in landelike en nie-landelike gebiede van ons provinsie.Toegang tot die fonds is baie eenvoudig. Al wat nodig is, is dat jy by die idee moet inkoop datsamewerking tussen ondernemings ’n wye reeks opwindende moontlikhede teweeg kan bring –selfs al is jou onderneming een van die kleinstes op die dorp. Die samestelling van ’n ‘sakegroep’– bestaande uit ten minste twee sake in afsonderlike besit – in jou gebied kan jou op ’n pad vansukses plaas wat jy nooit voorheen gedink het moontlik was nie.
Wanneer jy jou groep gevorm het, gaan na die PEO-verteenwoordiger by jou munisipaliteit ofkontak ons en versoek ’n aansoekvorm vir die PEO Groeifonds. Amptenare daar sal jou al dienodige inligting gee om die vorm volledig te voltooi. She smiles at the thought of the little Ger-man woman waking up and popping thenurse one. The hospital had phonedshortly afterwards. “Your mother is outof the coma.”
This is one of the many fond memoriesCharles and Elonka Ueberberg have of Oliv-er’s mother Hanna who died of cancer at theaged of 66, three years ago.
Elonka’s dad Kokkie succumbed to the dis-ease last year.
“That was after some seriously good fightsby both of them. They didn’t just go to bedand say that is it,” Oliver says.
The couple from Table View were amongthose who supported the shavathon held atFergie’s Pub on Saturday. The event raisedfunds for Cansa and Fellows for Cancer, acharity group in Melkbosstrand who help lo-cal cancer sufferers pay their medical bills.
It is this intimate knowledge of cancer anda chance meeting with Francois Combrinck,oneof the trustees ofFellows forCancer, thatsaw Elonka and Oliver become involved inthe group.
“We rented a house from Francois whichwe turned into a pre-school in Melk-bosstrand. Three years ago we held a fund-raiser for Fellows for Cancer at the schooland we managed to raise R6 000 just bycharging an entry fee,” Oliver says.
This year Elonka has volunteered to haveher shoulder-length blonde hair shaved offin the hopes of raising more funds for the or-ganisations.
There is tremendous support for her ef-fort.
There are three hairdressers – two of themare women and neither are too keen to makethe big cut. In the end it is Pauline Swart wholet the electric razormowapathway througha field of hair.
“You look beautiful babe. Yay! No morehairdryer,” Oliver encourages the love inhis life as she wrinkles her nose at the cam-eras pointed in her direction.
“If I don’t look like Demi Moore I want mymoney back,” she jokes.
Then it’s over. The flip of a switch stran-gles the razor’s buzzing. The smell of babypowder fills the air. Pauline unceremonious-
ly whips off the sheet that covers Elonka andshe stands up, leaving a little bit of herselfbehind.
Sporting a much shorter, spiky hairdo shejoins her friends at the table.
“Naked” is the first word she says whenasked how she feels.
“We are going to stick like Velcro tonight,”she says as she hugs Oliver.
Elonka’s haircut raised R20 000.The cutting of her hair was “auctioned off”
with supporters asked to contribute R1 000each.
“The idea came to us last night. So Elonkaphoned Francois and said this is what sheis willing to do.
“We were hoping to raise at least R10 000this way,” Oliver says as his wife’s blondelocks already lie strewn on the black tarmacof the pub’s parking lot.
“That is double our expectation, that isjust great,” Oliver says. He is very proud ofhis partner.
“When it comes to Elonka there are twothings – old people and children. Those areher passions,” he says.

Money needed tomanage trafficWhile thousands of motorists in the north-ern suburbs are at the end of their tetherfighting the peak hour traffic in the sub-urbs, the handful of traffic officers mustbe at the end of their tether too.
The City of Cape Town blames the se-vere shortage of traffic officers on a lackof funds but promises that the problemwill be addressed over a period of fiveyears, during which 1 000 more officerswill be appointed in the departments oftraffic, law enforcement, metro and fireand rescue.
They also say they took over a “crip-pled” service from the former local gov-ernment and claim they have made bigstrides since then to remedy the situation.
But the question remains whetherenough has been done in the time given?
Taking into account the hundreds ofthousands of traffic offences being regis-tered from month to month, it could be de-duced that law enforcement is failing. Thenumber of fines is increasing and so is theamount of money raked in by the city, butis the “anarchy” on the roads being pur-posefully addressed?
On 28 March, at the next council sittingthe item will once again appear on theagenda, after a budget request was put for-ward. One can only hope that the rulingparty will see the wood for the trees anddeliver on the promises they keep making.

En so kan ek aangaan.

Bridge ontothe N1 ideais excellentI welcome with utmost enthusiasm Coun-cillor Heather Brenner’s initiative toopen up two lanes over the Paarden Islandbridge onto the N1 and city from MarineDrive and the R27/West Coast Road.
For years the commuter has struggledin frustration waking up at the crack ofdawn to earn a living far below the verycouncillors they vote for, wasting manyprecious hours desperately trying to getto work. Hundreds of letters have beenwritten to the press and City Council invain.
It infuriates one even more as each yearreports in the media indicate that our CityCouncil only manages to spend less thantwo-thirds of the allocated budget.
One assumed with the recent upgradeson the N1/M5 interchange and wideningof the N1 in the vicinity that this wouldhave been part and parcel of the plans.
For Brenner to state that even if workwere to commence immediately on theother much anticipated project connect-ing Sandown Road to the N7 it would takeat least two more years just frustrates thecommuter even more.
The public is exhausted of hearing oneexcuse after another.
So many times we have heard excusesrather than solutions from Councillor IanNeilson (former Table View ward council-lor - ed) and others.
A project like Brenner’s latest sugges-tion ought to be steamrolled into exist-ence without any more stories.
Should Brenner succeed in pushing thisproposal into timeous fruition ratherthan waiting another decade for someplanned pipe-dream, she will go far in re-dressing the distrust the public have to-wards the very party they have voted for.
Coincidentally both province and cityare controlled by the same party and thepublic will be unhappy to hear of more ex-cuses.
Should she fail, there is little need toworry.
We shall continue supporting our partydespite growing scepticism but we arecounting on her to let the steam out –steamrolling both the link to the N7 andthe dual lane onto the N1 without any fur-ther delays.

Hospital staff weresimply the very bestWhilst paging through the TygerBurger of 29February, I spotted the advertisement forNetcare Blaauwberg Hospital and thought Ishould pass comment on it. I was seriouslyburnt whilst having a braai on 6 November2011 and was rushed to Blaauwberg Hospitaland can only agree with the opening line intheir advert: “You can be confident in thelevels of care and attention you receive in aNetcare Hospital”.
I went into surgery to be intubated (pipedown your nose/throat) on that Sunday andonly woke up again 10 days later after havingbeen put into a drug-induced coma – not real-ising that during this period I had not beengiven much chance of survival, when mylungs collapsed/filled with fluid. The care,concern and level of attention my family re-ceived fromall thedoctors/nursing staff dur-ing this traumatic time was unbelievableand I know that they were the reason for mebeing able to write this letter today. I have
never experienced such focused and directedmedical care in any of the other medical in-stitutions that I havebeen to – and therehavebeen many over the years.
I would therefore like to thank all the doc-tors, nurses and staff that were involvedwith my dramatic recovery who call NetcareBlaauwberg Hospital “home” – the Binnsfamily from all over the world thank you foryour dedication and commitment to yourcustomers (those in the bed and those besidethe bed). You are all extremely special andeach time we see the name or drive past thebuilding we have fond memories of the trulyoutstanding staff inside.

The popular SPCA Purina “Woefie-Wan-del” is going rustic and this year willtake place at Nitída Cellars in the Dur-banville Wine Valley on Sunday, 18March at 09:00.
The country dog walk, organised by theCape of Good Hope SPCA and leading petfood company Purina, will take walkers andtheir dogs on scenic routes through pictur-esque working vineyards.
Walkers can choose either the family-friendly 2 kilometre meander through low-lying vineyards or the longer 4 kilometreroute, ideal for fitter walkers and dogs, whowill be treated to breathtaking views of Ta-ble Mountain and Robben Island.
Afterwards,walkers and their dogs canre-lax and picnic under umbrellas on the banksof the estate’s dam.
Ferdinand Rabie of Big Brother fame willinteract with participants and draw win-ners of hampers and gift vouchers donatedby Purina and Pick n Pay.
Guests can shop at the SPCA’s Vetshopstand and visit the Purina stand where theywill receive a free gift. There will also bekid’s entertainment.
The estate’s Cassia restaurant will have avariety of delicious food and beverages onsale before and after the walk as well as deli-cious picnic baskets, which must be pre-or-dered by emailing [email protected].
Being an off-road country walk, the SPCAencourages all entrants to wear properwalking shoes suitable for walking on dirtroads.
“We also want to caution owners of short-nose breeds (i.e. bulldogs and pugs) andthose with older dogs with joint problems,to consult their veterinarian before commit-ting to taking part in the walk.
“Puppies under four months are not per-mitted to take part and owners of large breeddogs 18 months or younger, should considerwalking a shorter distance, as extendedwalking can put undue pressure on delicateskeletal structures and muscles and can im-pact their growth plates and affect joint de-velopment,” said CoGH SPCA events co-or-dinator, Juan August.
Water points will be available along theroutes and SPCA Inspectors and AnimalWelfare assistants.
Entry forms are available at selected Pickn Pay stores in the northern suburbs, localveterinarians, from the SPCA in GrassyPark and SPCA Vet Shop in Plumstead.

1 x 170g can solid tuna or tunachunks in oil
1 x 200g punnet ripe, red Rosa orcherry tomatoes, halved lengthwise
salt and milled black pepperfresh basil leaves (shredded or left
whole if leaves are small), or Italianparsley (chopped), or small wildrocket leaves (left whole)
Fill a pot with enough water tocook the pasta. Bring to the boil.
Drain the tuna. Reserve 20ml (4tsp) of the tuna oil. Coarsely flake

“Charl Michael is van kleins afbaie lief vir motors en het op 4-jari-ge ouderdom reeds al die motorswat ’n mens in ’n parkeerarea konsien, se kentekens geken.
“Ons het vir hom ’n kadet-gokartgekoop in 2010. Hy het verlede jaaras ’n beginner op Killarney afge-skop en het aan die einde van diejaar in die laaste wedren ’n derdeplek vir die seisoen behaal.
“Ons is baie trots op sy Drywervan die Dag-toekenning wat hy ont-vang het,” sê pa Charl.

The 2012 Century City Sports Festi-val attracted a record number ofparticipants over the weekend withthe signature event of the three dayfestival – the 10km Century City Ex-press road race – boasting a field ofmore than 1 800 runners.
The 10km Century City Expresswas won by Lindikhaya Mtangayiof Mr Price Western Cape in a timeof 30 minutes and 11 seconds. Hewas followed closely by NkosinathiMadyo (Nedbank) in a time of 30:14with Mthandazo Qhina (Nedbank)in third place with a time of 30:21.
The first woman home was ZintleXiniwe (Mr Price) in a time of 36:10,with Bulelwa Simae (Nedbank) insecond place with a time of 36: 39 fol-lowed by Ulrica Stander (New Bal-ance) in 36:55.
Three times Comrades Winner,Vladimir Kotov, who runs in Centu-ry City colours, was the first Mas-
ters over 50 runner home in a timeof 33:37.
Accepting his prize, Mtangayisaid he now had his sights firmlyset on winning the Two Oceans HalfMarathon.
The Century City Sports Festivalis aimed at both corporate teamsand individual participants andprovides both participatory andspectator sports including a 2,5kmFunRun/Walk which attractedover 350 participants, junior andsenior touch rugby tournaments,five-a-side corporate soccer compe-titions, kermesse road circuit Cy-cling races, junior and senior canoemarathons, Western Province tri-als for canoe polo, a dragon boat re-gatta and an under-11 six-a-sidecricket tournament.

From a mere 60 riders and one province com-peting back in 2003, the South African Nation-al Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa)has grown beyond belief.
As it stand now, 343 high schools and 417 prima-ry schools actively participated last year.
“Sanesa is acknowledged by the South AfricanEquestrian Federation (SAEF) and by Sascoc.Sanesa is also the only official platform recognisedby the government.
“The main reason for the steady increase innumbers we have had over the years is that thereis no annual fee, thus making it very accessible foranyone to compete. There is only a fee on showdays,” said Wendy Hendrickse of the WesternProvince committee.
School equestrian is run on the same basis asother school sports with learners between the ageof four to 18 years competing on provincial, region-al and national levels.
The different disciplines include jumping, dres-sage, equitation, showing, endurance, vaulting,saddle seat, western riding and western mountedgames. Eventing is in the final stages of being in-corporated.
“We are preparing for four qualifier shows in theWestern Cape ending with our inter-regional qual-ifier taking place in George from 9 to 12 August.
“The first qualifier takes place on 17 to 18 Marchat the Durbanville Racecourse (Serenity). The sec-ond qualifier will be held in Stellenbosch on 21 to22 April with the third one on 19 to 20 at the Dur-banville Racecourse. A venue for the fourth andfinal qualifier is yet to be announced,” said Hen-drickse.
