he biggest challenges facing Parow po-

lice are the use and the selling of drugs

    according to the station commander,

    Col Phindi Ntungele.

    Despite drug-related crime dropping from

651 to 394 in the recently released crime sta-

Ntungele is also worried about situations

where drug dealerswould rent a house to op-

erate from and as soon as the police are on

to them just move to another house in the

    vicinity.

Many lawful owners rent out their hous-

es to foreign nationals who dont even have

a job. How can someone be trusted who can

pay rent, yet dont declare their income?

There is no proof of salary at all, she ex-

    plains.

Home owners renting their premises out

to drug dealers are, in effect, just as guilty

    as the perpetrators.

Neighbours are fully aware what goes on

in the area and have resorted to staking

out houses from where drugs are allegedly

    being sold.

TygerBurger reported on thismatter a few

weeks ago in the article entitled Residents

    besiege den.

It was claimed at the time that the occu-

pants on whom the public was keeping an

eye moved from one house to another in or-

der to sell drugs and promote prostitution.

Ntungele reckons the best way to address

the growing problem of drugs is precisely by

    strengthening the partnership between the

    public and the police.

A vast number of drug arrests have been

a direct result of members of the public act-

    ing as informers.

Ntungele also urges people to join neigh-

    bourhoodwatches, because battling crime is

the responsibility of society, not just a few

    individuals.

We have some very effective neighbour-

hood watches in our precinct, such as the

PWP that looks over Panorama, Welgelegen

and Plattekloof. We are working hand-in-

hand with them. Parow North also has a

    good neighbourhood watch. People should

really consider joining these bodies because

we all know they are the polices eyes and

    ears, she concludes.

Some other notable changes in the crime

statistics are sexual crimes, which have

been decreasing for the last four years from

88 to 58, and theft of motor vehicles and mo-

    torcycles down from469 in 2011/2012 to 367.

There have only been five kidnappings as

opposed to 10 in the previous period.

    wyd en sydhetMaandagoggendmet n gesug

en n gebrul vol pyne en skete by hul ver-

    skeie werkplekke opgedaag.

    tein, ges.

    mannenkin-pis-vasbytspan.

    15 km.

Ons be-

bedank is, is Union Cycles, Bolt Security, 3D

dat hul borgtogbedrag so min is.

Die twee verdagtes van Delft het glo

vroer vanjaar verklarings by die Parow-

    verskeurende manier vertel.

Nel het na bewering n vriendin laataand

by haar huis in King Edwardstraat naby

twee maal geskiet is. Hy is eers in sy kop

en daarna in sy skouer geskiet.

Dit het ao. Jacques Mostert van die Pa-

    row-polisiekantoor bevestig. Die motief vir

die moord blyk onbekend, maar mag dalk

    roof wees, s Mostert.

Volgens Napier is haar broer eers as n

John Doe geklassifiseer en is twee dae later

    deur haar uitgeken.

Ek kan skaars hieroor praat, sNapier.

Sy snik. Onswagnog vir die outopsie om

vir ons te s hoe lank hy gely het. Hoe kan

hierdie mense so lig wegkom?

    Kol. Phindi Ntungele, stasiebevelvoer-

    moord is beslis n raaisel.

Hy was maar soos my ouer broer of selfs

soos n pa vir my. Ek sou enige dagmy lewe

    vir hom gee, s Pieterse.

Die verdagtes sal weer op Donderdag 12

    Desember in die Bellville-landdroshof ver-

    skyn.

    Moordverdagtes kry borgtog

    Izak Nel se

    motor, waarvan

    die bebloede

    ruit 'n aandui-

    ding is van wat

    moontlik op

    die aand van

    17 Augustus

    gebeur het.

The team also generously donated much-

    babies.

It is already successfully being used on

7 months to 3-year-olds and fits in with the

    international standard forVisual Response

Many of the 16 volunteers had not heard

of the miracle of newborn hearing screen-

ing and the impact that early intervention

is making in the future of deaf education.

They left the Carel du Toit Centre not on-

what they had learnt: the role of parent

training at the Chat Centre, that all babies

need their hearing screened at birth, that

two-week-old deaf babies have the best

    P

    arow actor, film-maker and philan-

    thropist, Greg Kriek, recently re-

    turned from Johannesburg where he

was one of a handful of South Africans at

    the One Young World Summit.

One Young World is an international or-

ganisation that focuses on bring young peo-

ple from across the world together to net-

    work and create positive change.

Their annual summit is a chance for

young delegates to debate and find solu-

tions to issues affecting their society, with

the help of One Young World counsellors.

Greg was working on a project in Los An-

geles, when he was approached by French

Media Company Arjowiggans, who run an

    initiative calledBlank Sheet Project, which

showcases global creative leaders from all

over the world who use creativity to make

    a difference.

They had seen some of my films that I

made, says Greg, who has also worked as

a director for Top Billing. They saw some

of my work and they said look, theyd love

    to sponsor me, Greg says.

    Opportunity

Greg was excited that the opportunity

would further help him in his goal to bridge

the gap between Los Angeles and Africa.

    Business and society, transparency, cli-

mate change, global health and hunger re-

lief are just some of the topics Greg says

    were covered at the summit.

He says the summit is an opportunity for

leaders representing youth to raise their

concerns and these issues are then present-

    ed to the United Nations.

    Education and youth unemployment are

the issues specifically close to Gregs heart.

As I grow in my career in the entertain-

ment industry, I want to use my platform

more andmore to be able to pump that back

    into education and social entrepreneurship

at a grassroots level, Greg says, pointing

that although he does believe there is some

responsibility that rests on the shoulders of

government and policy making, there is a

lot that can be done at a grassroots level to

    empower youth with skills development.

One of the projects Greg is personally in-

    volvedwith is theHappyFeetYouthProject

with aims to provide a safe environment for

    children from Langa, while supporting

their basic needs and promoting develop-

ment through sports and culture, like gum-

    boot dancing.

Gumboot dancing is basically a struc-

tured way to keep children out of gangster-

ism and off the street, Greg explains, add-

ing: Its also a form of discipline and cre-

ates an environment where we can teach

them social skills as well as building confi-

    dence and motivation and teamwork.

Greg is also about to start filming a docu-

mentary about disabled youth and the is-

    sues they face.

He says before going to the summit, he

was worried that it was going to be all talk.

But the one thing I took from the summit

is that the people whowere in that environ-

ment were really dedicated to taking action

and I asked myself the question, what am

I going to commit to doing, Greg says.

    Change

He says he often speaks of media as a tool

for change and he realised at the summit

that he needs to use film to be a voice for

    the voiceless.

Among the world leaders Greg got to

meet during the summit are ex-secretary

general of the United Nations, Kofi Annan,

    musician Sir Bob Geldorf, businessman,

Sir Richard Branson, Nobel Laureate Pro-

    fessor Muhammad Yunus, Barclays CEO

    Antony Jenkins and Arianna Huffington

    from the Huffington Post.

Greg says being around people who are

doers and not just talkers was very in-

spiring. He says the best way to sum up his

experience is: Im shocked into action.

Anybody interested in also taking action

can find out more about Gregs outreach

projects on his website at www.grego-

Raking in the goldmedals at Veritas

    T

he De Grendel wine estate was the top

performer at the 2013 Veritas wine

awards with three double gold medals

for its Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and

    Shiraz.

De Grendel, the historic Durbanville farm

on the slopes of the Tygerberg Hills, scored

ahat trick at this yearsVeritas, one of South

    Africas leading national wine shows.

Double gold medals were awarded to the

Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Shiraz 2011

    and Merlot 2010.

In garnering three of the only 68 double gold

medals awarded, De Grendel was ranked

among the four top achievers at the show.

De Grendels top honours were also one of

only three, six and eight double golds

awarded in the Merlot, Shiraz and Sauvi-

    gnonBlancvarietal categories respective-

    ly.

    The veteran vintner, Charles Hopkins,

expressed delight on behalf of his team,

which includes the owner, Sir David

Graaff, winemaker Elzette du Preez and

    vineyard managers Douglas Muzengeza

    and Kudzai Mwerenga.

    Winner

Were excited, not only because the

wines had to stand out among somany en-

tries but, to get a double gold, at least five

of the seven panel members had to score

the wine 18 out of 20.

It means there is a fair amount of con-

sensus on what constitutes a double gold

    winner, he said.

    Hopkins was particularly pleased with

the recognition given the latest vintage of

the Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc as it was

made in smaller quantities fewer than

2 000 cases than the farms regular Sau-

vignon of about 10 000 cases.

Hopkins is equally delighted with the

    recognition of theDeGrendelMerlot 2010.

He says Merlot as a variety requires

hard work to turn into a soft wine.

Two of the newer additions to De Gren-

dels wine portfolio have also recently re-

    ceived kudos from expert palates.

The De Grendel Brut Mthode Cap Clas-

sique 2011, a classic combination of Pinot

    Noir andChardonnay, received aGoldHigh-

ly Recommended rating at the 12th annual

    CapClassiqueChallenge, thedefinitive local

wine show for sparkling wines made in the

    traditional French bottle-fermented way.

The De Grendel Rubaiyat 2010, the farms

Bordeaux-style red blend of Cabernet Sauvi-

gnon, Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc,

garnered a gold medal at leading German

    wine show Mundus Vini.

    Gold

    The only other double goldVeritaswinner

from the Durbanville wine valley was Hill-

crest with its Hillcrest Estate Hornfels Ca-

    bernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet Franc/

    Malbec/Petit Verdot 2009.

A gold medal was won by Durbanville

Hills Wines with its 2012 Rhinofields Noble

Late Harvest. This wine also won two other

gold medals in the space of a few weeks

gold outstanding at the 2013 International

Wine and Spirits Competition and double

gold at the 2013 Michelangelo International

    Wine Awards.

In the past week I was overtak-

    en by two heavily loaded

    bakkies with passengers sitting

on top of the actual load. This

    not only contradicts the

    seatbelt law but also goes

    against reasonably sized

    vehicle loads.

    For the amount of emphasis

    placed on wearing a seatbelt,

how is it okay to carry passen-

gers on the back of an open

    top bakkie?

    Personally, I have had an

    issue with bakkies or smaller

    utility vehicles carrying

    passengers in urban areas for

a long time but I dont feel that

    people quite grasp the dangers.

    According to Arrive Alive

    the restrictions enforced

    against transporting passengers

on the back of an open top

bakkie is for those seated, the

rear door must be 350 mm in

    height and when the passen-

    gers are standing a minimum

of 900 mm in height is re-

    quired.

    This seriously needs to be

    reconsidered: if for some

reason this vehicle has to come

    to an emergency stop, what

price are those on the back of

    the bakkie going to pay?

Laat jy hulle buite agter die veiligheids-

    ANDR BAKKES

    @andrebakkes

Every engine roared for the Sunflower

    Fund.

    The second annual Bikers4BandanasMo-

torbike Ride at Ysterplaat Air Force Base

attractedmore than 1 500 bikers onSunday.

    Bikers, spectators anddignitaries that in-

cluded the founder of the Sunflower Fund,

Tina Botha, Western Cape Premier Helen

Zille and ward councillor James Vos, all

stood behind the core issue of the day to

raise funds and help increase the South Af-

    rican Bone Marrow Registry.

Botha says there were more than double

the bikes than there were last year.

They converged on Ysterplaat Air Force

Base in their hundreds and, after buying a

    colourful bandanawent ona snaking cruise

through the suburbs and on the highways.

After this short trip that attracted a lot

of attention in the areas that they passed

they returned to the base for more activi-

    ties.

SaysBotha: The Fund recruits donors to

help save our leukaemia patients. This

whole thing started when my son was diag-

nosed with leukaemia back in 1997. We lost

Chris in a September... In fact, yesterday

(Saturday) would have been his 31st birth-

day... So Bandana Day is actually on his

    birthday.

She reserved a huge thanks for one of the

funds patrons, Zille, and to all the bikers,

    withoutwhomnone of thiswould be possi-

ble. Zille later addressed the bikers and

    emphasised that motorcyclists have the

    biggest hearts.

If anyone ever doubted the significance

of this event, their question would have

been answered when the bases command-

ing officer, Col Christo Stroebel handed

over a cheque for R68 000 to the fund, which

was just the initial amount raised from the

    bikers entry fees.

An exceptional recital of art and songs of

Francesco Paolo Tosti and Enrique Grana-

dos, contemporaries from Italy and Spain,

will be performed at the Hugo Lambrechts

Auditorium on Sunday afternoon 20 Octo-

    ber.

Duo, Marchio Marisa, soprano and Ul-

iano, guitar, will be supported by the oboe

virtuoso Carin Bam. They are celebrated

performers in their own right and also col-

    leaguesat theHugoLambrechtsMusicCen-

    tre in Parow.

Uliano explains that Tosti from Italy and

    Granados fromSpain lived from themiddle

of the 19th century until 1916.

He adores the beautiful contrast between

the sweet melodies of Italy and the more

    peppery Spanish music

He adapted the original piano accompa-

niment of these art songs for oboe and gui-

tar. Their programme, therefore, is really

    nothing but unique.

Uliano and Marisa are acknowledged so-

loists who honed their skills in Europe,

taught at various conservatories in Italy

and were regularly called to adjudicate at

    international competitions.

Carin Bam is one of Cape Towns most

sought after oboists; and woodwind teach-

ers and currently heads the woodwind de-

    partment at Hugo Lambrechts.

She is an avid chamber musician and

completed her UNISA Licentiate in Music

    Performance in 2010.

    PAT volunteer Nadia

    Shante with Baby

    Brand.

Volunteers from Pets as Therapy (PAT) and

DellComputers paid a joint visit to theTrans

50 Retirement Village in Panorama Palms

    last week.

This special visit was organised as part of

    the commemoration of International Week

of the Older Person which started on 1 Octo-

    ber.

Volunteers from PAT brought along their

    specially-assessed therapy dogs who accom-

panied volunteers from Dell on the

    visit.

    They elicited smiles fromeveryone

they met including staff and resi-

    dents at the facility.Everybodywant-

ed to have a chance to stroke the dogs

and have a friendly chat with the vol-

unteers about their own dogs or

    those of their families.

    Dogs and volunteers were wel-

comed into many a sitting room in

the facility and found it very hard to

leave again. Even on their way out,

theywere stopped at the door by resi-

dents who were returning from an

outing and had missed the visit.

    Lifestyle consultant at Panorama

    Palms, Annemarie Heydenrych said

    that Trans 50 Association encourag-

    esvisitingpets as thishasamajor im-

pact on the well-being of residents in

    facilities. Where possible we also

    encourage residents who live alone

or in independent living units to

    have pets of their own.

    More andmore research is coming

to the fore, showing the positive im-

pact that both companion and visit-

ing animals have on residents in var-

    ious types of facilities including

homes for the retired and both men-

    tally or physically challenged. Visits

from animals provide a change from

    normal routine and residents be-

come more responsive during, as well as af-

ter a visit. There are also physiological bene-

fits; a persons blood pressure drops when

stroking an animal and petting encourages

a person to use hands and arms.

PAT is a registered charity, and all mem-

bers are volunteers who use their own ani-

mals to visit selected facilities. To find out

    more, please visit their website:

    www.pat.org.za.

The PAT and Dell volunteers visiting Panorama Palms are (back) Marieanna le Roux (PAT

chairperson), Bianca Dafel (Dell) and Gail Southwood (Dell). In front are Marike Kotz (PAT), Sean

Bezuidenhout (Dell), Keith Jones (PAT) and Nadia Gallerini (PAT). The dog friends are Kirby,

    Tammy and Shante.
