This dream had to be put on hold when she fell pregnant in 1987, at the age of 17. As she had a child to bring up, Sheila could not complete matric, but the dream persisted. In 2004 Sheila completed a compu- ter course and in the following year, she registered as a part-time stu- dent at the Cape Peninsula Univer- sity of Technology. This go-getter paid for her studies with her salary and when she re- ceived her diploma last week, her studies were paid in full. “It wasn’t easy,” Sheila says. “Af- ter I completed the second year, I wanted to quit, because it was too much for me.” Sheila had five sub- jects in her first year and four in the second year and with a full-time job, she merely didn’t have enough time to juggle everything. Sheila persisted, however. Mon- days to Thursdays she went to class between 17:20 and 19:20 and still had to find the time to study for tests and exams, but she managed it. Despite being busy between work and studies, Sheila made time for love too and in 2007 she married Mx- olisi Dala. During exams though, she took time off to study. Her employer of the past 12 years, Carin Human, is very proud of Shei- la. “She is a real inspiration,” she says. About her choice of career Sheila says: “I want to work in human re- sources. It is such a broad field and I like to talk. I am a people’s per- son,” she says. Sheila’s only daughter, Philiswa (21) is repeating Grade 12 this year, to obtain a better result for univer- sity exemption. “My daughter says I am an encouragement,” says Shei- la. While Sheila was studying to- wards her degree, Communication 1 was added as an additional subject to the diploma, which meant Sheila had to study an additional year, in which she completed that one last subject. Sheer determination paid off forNosipho Sheila Mdini, a 42-year-old domestic worker from Bos-ton, when she received her Na-tional Diploma in Human Re-source Management last week.

The new Bishops School of Skillswants to boost skills training inthe area as it celebrates its firstanniversary.
It opened last year and is now sit-uated at the old William Mason Pri-mary school – a hive of activity asbuilders have moved in to completethe upgrading of the school.
Principal Keith Temmers is pas-sionate about the future of theschool and sees it becoming the hubof skills training in Bishop Lavisand surrounding communities.
“I have been involved in educa-tion for many years, but with thisproject I am so excited because I seeit growing into a facility that will goa long way in reducing the lack ofskilled artisans in our communi-ties,” he says.
“What is also inspiring me at theschool is that I am supported by astaff who are just as committed asI am to making a difference in thelives of these children.
“As you can see there are still lotsof alterations taking place to thebuildings at the school, and oncethey are completed we will have afirst-class skills training school,but that is only the start of what wewant to do.”
Temmers explained that many ofthese skills training schools havebeen started in various communi-ties and it is part of the educationdepartment’s aim to improve thelack of training facilities to fightpoverty.
“At the moment learners are ad-
vised to attend this type of schoolbecause of learning problems in thenormal academic field.
“In thepast thiswas seenas aneg-ative move but we have since real-ised that in many cases these learn-
ers excel when it comes to this typeof training.
“One of our main objectives forthe future is that the training thatlearners receive here gets some for-mal recognition so that they can go
on to skills colleges and get properaccreditation for what they are do-ing.
“Even without this proper formalrecognition they are still empow-ered because we find that many
businesses would rather employthem with the experience that theyhave, and then send them on to getmore formal training.
“At present there is a body madeup of all these skills schools who areworking closely with governmentto bring about these changes bydrawing up the proper work andtext books, as well as standardisedskills curricula that will give themthe means to get into colleges forfurther study,” he said.
While the technical side of train-ing at the school involves metalwork and welding, clothing, foodstudies, office practice, hairdress-ing as well as basic building, elec-tronics and electrical work, on theacademic side they do “regular”subjects like a first language, math-ematics, life orientation, technolo-gy and music.
Temmers added that there will al-so be a focus on extramural activi-ties like sports, to give all learnersa well-rounded educational experi-ence.
At present the alterations at theschool include building fully-equipped workshops, more toilet fa-cilities and a school hall.
“There is also a major focus onlife skills and good behaviour be-cause we want them to realise thatwith the proper skills they can be-come positive members of theircommunities and make a success oftheir lives.
“I am sure that in a few years’time this school is going to be aproud facility in the area, and makea difference in the lives of manylearners,” he concluded.

On Thursday 12 April at about05:00 Mfuleni SAPS found ablack male who had been hit bya vehicle on the Stellenbosch Ar-terial Road.
He was wearing black shoes,black trousers, and a grey shirtwith blue and white hoodedtrack-top. It is suspected that heis between 50 and 60 years of age.
A docket of culpable homicidehas been opened.

In another incident on Satur-day 14 April at about 15:15 the
body of another unknown blackmale was found in the river atthe back of Extension 6 in Mfule-ni.
He was wearing brownishpants, a brownish jersey and agrey/khaki jacket. Cause ofdeath is unknown.
Based on the status of thebody, it is estimated that hemight have been in the water forabout four days. An inquestdocket has been opened.
Mfuleni police are appealingto the community to come for-ward with any information thatcould lead to the successful iden-tification of these victims.

Help cops ID bodies
Mfuleni SAPS seeks the as-sistance of the public in trac-ing a suspect involved in twomurder cases and one at-tempted murder case.
On Monday 19 March atabout 06:00 the suspect alleg-edly shot a 25-year-old maletwice in the head in ChalloStreet in Wesbank.
Then on Sunday 1 April atabout 19:00 two brothers anda friend were standing in Ca-dot Street in Wesbank, whenthe suspect allegedly shot oneof the brothers twice in thehead, then chased the otherbrother and also shot him inhis back and head – he is in acritical condition in hospital.
The gunman then shot theirfriend in the leg.
He is considered to bearmed and very dangerous.
Police have described himas approximately 1,7 metrestall, fair in complexion with ascar on his face.
It is believed that he is mov-ing between Delft, Wesbankand Bellville South.
Mfuleni police are appeal-ing to the community to comeforward with information.

Jansen said that the person granting theloan would then offer to collect the materialson behalf of the person receiving the grant.
When a loan of R10 000 had been granted thescamster would then buy goods to the tune ofR20 000 without the knowledge of the personto whom the loan was granted.
The person that received the loan wouldthen sit with another debt of R10 000.
Jansen requested that the public use reputa-ble companies and not individuals when mak-ing loan applications.

Youth of the Methodist Church are gearingup for great celebrations for Youth Day inJune.
OnSunday 15April youngpeople gatheredat the Abel E Hendricks Memorial Method-ist Church, in St Vincent Drive Belhar as theTygerberg Circuit (which includes Method-ist churches in the areas of Ravensmead,Belhar, Elsies River and Parow) officiallylaunched their Fly the Flag campaign inpreparation for hosting the Cape District’sMethodist children and young people rallyon 16 June this year.
This event marked the beginning of a 63-day campaign whereby children and youngpeople will be “gate-crashing” their church-es and communities to create more aware-ness of this event among the children andyoung people.
Celebrating the launch under the theme,Being Christ-Joyful Agents, people camedressed in bright colours and costumes,from ministers to clowns, and the event tookthe form of a “theatrical carnival” experi-ence.
The campaign was officially launched asthe Cape district’s youth co-ordinator, IanLamont, superintendent Minister of the Cir-cuit, Rev John Stewe, Rev Elroy Kekana ofBelhar and Astrid Rhoda of Parow swungspoons to break piñatas, and then fireworksfilled the sky to declare the campaign offi-cially launched.
Following the launch, refreshments wereserved which included cupcakes, candy-floss, toffee apples and popcorn and eachchild was sent home with a balloon as a re-minder of the day.

This is the feeling of local communityworker Frank Julie who started the PeopleFirst Foundation (PFF) two years ago tobuild the capacity of NGO leaders in thecommunity.
Last week they hosted their fifth OpenLeadership Forum at the Leliebloem Child-fren’s Home in Athlone with more than 70participants benefiting from the activities.
Julies pointedout thatwith the current re-cession in the country many organisationswere struggling to raise funds to keep theirprojects going, but this was a forum for themto become aware of innovative ideas to keeprunning.
“At this forum they were given the chanceto ask questions from five development spe-cialists on a variety of issues.
“These included labour law and publicemployment services, local governance,leadership and management, media, fund-raising, staff development, monitoring andevaluation, as well as other related issues.
“Those who attended were impressed withthe responses they got from the panel,” hesaid.
Another important aspect of the forumwas the opportunity for networking and Jul-ie thanked the leaders for taking the time toattend the forum.
He also alerted them to future plannedevents such as donor forums where leaders
can meet and engage critically with donorson funding practices in a time of financialcrisis and NGO legal compliance.
PFF is also planning a series of workshopsto train non-profit leaders to become moreeffective in their organisations.

City residents can now phone a new toll- freenumber to report any incidents regardingstreet children and street people.
This number – 0800 872 201 – according toCornelia Finch, district head of the City ofCape Town’s social development sector, wasrolled out as part of the Give Responsiblycampaign.
This campaign, launched last month,aims to discourage members of the commu-nity from giving irresponsibly.
“Handouts given directly to street peoplesustain a deeply damaging lifestyle on thestreets. With our programmes we aim to get
them off the streets, by a holistic approach,”she says.
“If you really want to help, phone the toll-free numbers to find out how and where youcan help.
“You can also report street people to thiscall centre, from where action will be taken,either by means of a social worker or organi-sation,” she says.
The call centre can also advise you or di-rect you to the nearest organisation.
According to Finch the call centre will bemanned by four dedicated staff members,and she advises the public to phone the callcentre, instead of the police or ward council-lor, in cases involving street people.

“Missingdraincoversarenotonlyadan-ger to pedestrians, cyclists and motor-ists, but more so to our children whoplay in the vicinity.
“The replacement of the covers is an un-necessary expense to the City – the moneycould rather be used for new infrastructureor maintenance,” said the chairman forSubcouncil 3, JamesVos, afternumerous in-cidents of stolen drain covers were reportedto the municipality. Ward 3 and ward 70form part of Subcouncil 3.
“We continue to call upon the communityto please keep their eyes and ears open andhelp the city’s Copperheads to combat thisactivity by calling 0800 222 771 with any in-formation. It would be especially appreciat-ed if the information is as detailed as possi-ble, for example, if it is a vehicle, providethe make, colour and even number plate ofthe vehicle,” says Vos.
Vos explains that damage and theft of mu-nicipal property is a serious criminal of-fence. He went on to say that this degradesthe environment, creates the perceptionthat matters are out of control and, as a re-sult, the values of homes and businesses de-teriorate. “This has a major impact on theoverall quality of life in our community.”
Vos explains that he constantly lobbiesthe municipality to make main roads moreaesthetically pleasing, with landscaped en-trances and centre medians as well as streetsweeping and litter picking, only to seedrain covers stolen and essential streetsigns wantonly bent and broken, as well asthe destruction of litter bins coupled with
dumping.“Drain covers and road signs are impor-
tant for the safety of motorists and pedestri-ans alike, and damage to these signs createsan unsafe and potentially dangerous situa-tion; needless to say, repair and replacementof these items are also extremely costly andcounter-productive.”

Construction work is still underway at the hairpin bend on Fran-cie van Zijl Drive, near Tyger-berg Hospital.
The City of Cape Town re-minds motorists that traffic de-viation will remain in place un-til Friday 11 May.
Motorists are advised thattraffic on south-bound Mike Pie-naar Boulevard and west-boundof Tienie Meyer Bypass will beslow during peak times and al-ternate routes should be used toavoid peak time traffic.
Traffic will be deviated along
the inside of the hairpin bend.The traffic will be merged
from two lanes into one lane andslowed down to 20 km/h beforethe sharp bend.
The access road onto Francievan Zijl Drive at the bend will al-so be closed at the intersectionof Briadene Street for the dura-tion of the construction.

First the manholes, and now the brasspadlocks are popular among thieves.
This is due to the high monetary value ofbrass and copper.
Dr Les Rencontre, director of electricityservices of the City of Cape Town, said be-cause of the theft of the padlocks, the cityhas received numerous complaints of openelectricity kiosks.
He responded to a complaint by Durban-ville resident James Black, who found anopen electrical kiosk outside his house onthe corner of Paul Kruger and Hibiscusstreets.
Although the City locked the box after hecomplained, he said it is not the first timeboxes have been left unlocked.
“I want someone to sit up and do some-thing to make sure nothing like this is repea-ted. Can you imagine what would happen ifa child played there?” he asked.
According to Rencontre the maintenanceof electrical equipment in the city is done ona fixed maintenance plan.
In the case of kiosks the period is one year.“Due to previous manpower shortages, so-
me depots could be somewhat in arrearswith kiosk maintenance,” he said.
“A contractor has been appointed to assistand we hope to clear the backlog within sixmonths.
“In the interim the electricity departmentis in the process of replacing brass padlockswith nylon padlocks,” he said.
Thieves targeting locks

A centre equipped with a PET/CT scan-ner for the early detection of cancer, wasofficially opened last Thursday 19 Aprilat Tygerberg Hospital in Parow.
The scanner worth more than R15 million,will now be available to patients of the West-ern Cape’s three academic hospitals. This isthe first PET/CT scanner in the provincialstate health sector.
This initiative is a joint venture betweenthe Western Cape Department of Health,who paid for the build-ing of the centre, andNTP Radioisotopes,who donated the scan-ner.
At the opening func-tion, Western CapeHealth Minister The-uns Botha, said: “Thecost-saving implicationof this technology isphenomenal, and alsomeans that greaternumbers of patientswill be treated more ap-propriately, with im-proved outcomes forall. This is such a greatexample of the publicand private sectorworking together forthe wellbeing of thepeople of the WesternCape.”
Marie Curie, a twotimes Nobel Prize win-
ner, including one for her co-discovery withher husband Pierre of the radioactive ele-ment radium, also “attended” the function inthe body of actress Bev Cooke-Tonnesen. Ra-dium is used in cancer radiotherapy, as wellas a neutron source for research purposes.
Apart from the scanner, which was madepossible by Curie’s life work after all, “Cu-rie” herself was the belle of the ball.
She entertained guests with quirky ac-counts of her life back then when everythingshe touched became radioactive!
Curie died of cancer in 1934 due to an over-exposure to radium.

The trust, which gives relief tocancer babies and their families,has been selected as one of the bene-ficiaries for the ’Cause We Can!/Want Ons Kan! charity concert fea-turing some of the top names in theSA music scene.TygerBurger is the media spon-

“We are trying to raise money tohelp the families of the children
who have been diagnosed with can-cer,” says Mandie Erasmus fromthe Little Fighter Cancer Trust.
“Cancer is not a thing that hap-pens to a person of a certain age. Weneed to create awareness in SouthAfrica as more children are beingdiagnosed and these families needsupport.”
She says some of the parents losetheir jobs andbusinesses because ofthe medical bills and because theywant to give their children the bestmedical care.
“These people need petrol money,food, clothes and money for hospi-tal and doctor bills and that iswhere we come in and try to assist.”
The trust was started in 2010 byTania Goslett and Thomas Engelain Paarl.
They were offering support tofamilies but then they realised thatthey needed to be a bigger trust tooffer assistance to more families. Inless than a year they were offeringsupport to 40 families all over CapeTown and even Johannesburg.
The trust shows support to anychild diagnosed with cancer under18, but if the child is over the ageand still has cancer, the relation-ship will continue.
Erasmus came on board after hermother, grandmother and grandfa-ther died of cancer.
“Cancer patients have alwaysbeen close to my heart. I startedreading the trust’s Facebook pageand after Tania and Thomas askedme to get involved I started doingfundraisers.”
From these fundraisers outreachprogrammes were started and theBag of Hope project was born – thetrust makes up food parcels for thefamilies of the cancer children, theyalso refurbish the beds and draw-ers. Families also receive bags con-taining cereal, noodles, coffee, tea,sugar, shampoo, conditioner, toilet-ries and other things they mayneed.
Children receive bags withclothes, shoes, stationery, toys, toi-letries, juices, a blanket – all the es-sentials they may need.
“For Mother’s Day we want to dosomething for the mothers too be-cause they would sit at hospitalssometimes for years while theirchildren are receiving cancer treat-ment and often they have to selltheir belongings to pay for the treat-ment,” says Erasmus.
“That’s where we come in: we dis-tribute bags to the mothers withnice feminine goodies and flowers.We will also be cooking a nice lunchfor them on the day.”
Erasmus says the goodies are andwill be delivered to various placeswho care for children who havebeen diagnosed with cancer.
She says for the future they arelooking at getting vehicles to helpwith the transporting of the goods.They are also looking at buying ahouse close to the Red Cross Chil-dren’s Hospital.
“We want the mothers to come tothe house and have a place to un-
wind after spending hours at thehospital. We also want to empowerthe mothers, many of them havegiven up their jobs to be able to bewith their children and we need toassist them,” says Erasmus.
“We want to have short courses,including computer literacy to em-power these women.”
She says it is “heartwarming” tobe one of the beneficiaries of theCause We Can!/Want On Kan! con-cert.
“We are very humbled to havebeen selected as a beneficiary. Wewill be able to better our service tothe community. We are thankful forthe opportunity,” she says.

Transport still bighurdle for disabledI am a 57-year-old paraplegic due to a car ac-cident in 1984. I lost my motor vehicle claimin 1989 due to negligence at the Table ViewPolice Station.
The police lost the original accident reportand the High Court only accepts the state-ment taken at the time of the accident.
Those years things were very difficult forthe disabled. Jobs were unheard of. I workedvery hard and went through so many humili-ations and insults trying to get a job. Thegrant those years was R189 per month andI was a single parent; my son was six yearsold at the time.
I did different courses and offered myskills free to companies just to show that Iam able. In 1989 I started at a company as anAutocad operator.
Those years companies paid you whateverthey wanted to. They told me that I was luckyso I should be grateful. The person that I re-placed earned R600 per week, I was paid R120for Autocad and accounts because I was disa-bled.
That did not put me off, it just made mestronger and more determined to do better.
I also got my driver’s licence in 1989. Thoseyears no driving school had ever taken a dis-abled person on the road.
These were only some of the challenges Ihad to overcome. The letter will be too longif I told you everything.
At the moment I am working at Murray &Roberts Foreshore, Cape Town as a recep-tionist. My problem is public transport.
I have been registered at Dial-A-Ride since2009. Nontando at Dial-A-Ride has finally af-ter writing so many letters to so many differ-ent people including the mayor’s office re-sponded, by saying they will work some-thing out.
Apparently Dial-A-Ride has only 27 vehi-cles and 6 000 registered people. Nontando to-gether with the mayor’s office responded 5

problem. I take the MyCiTi bus from the air-port to the Civic Centre. I need transport tothe airport.
The MyCiTi bus is very wheelchair friend-ly and the staff very accommodating, theywill help push me to work. The pavementsare not very accessible, no ramps.
I live in Ravensmead and start work 07:30till 16:30 Monday to Friday. At the momentI use the MyCiTi bus from the Cape Town air-port to the Civic Centre in town.
The bus is very wheelchair friendly andthe monthly is R424, very accommodating.
My problem is getting to and from the air-port, people chargeR50per ride and somearevery unreliable. I have to ask different peo-ple every day. My stomach is like a tumbledrier, I have this constant fear, worry, thatI will not get to work.
It is important for me to be at work on timeevery day.
The reason for this letter is, to make peopleaware of the transport problem disabled peo-ple have. The government encourages Per-sons with Disabilities to become independ-ent and apply for jobs, but how can they ap-ply for jobs when they have no way of gettingto work?
There are so many disabled people whowould prefer to earn a salary than depend ona government grant.
This is 2012 – surely by now South Africashould be better equipped to accommodatetransport for the disabled?
Public transport in general is a majorproblem in South Africa. It should not onlybe a Dial-A-Ride problem.We should be ableto take public transport. I need to addressthis problem to people that will be able to actpositively. Please assist!

It’s the end of April, but matricsmust start making plans fortheir studies in 2013.
While the April holidays areslowly fading, and this year’s Grade12s are only just settling into theirlast year at school, an education ex-pert warns that those who want topursue studies next year must startinvestigating their options and sub-mit applications to the tertiary in-stitutions of their choice.
“It is imperative that the lessonsof the last three or four years areused to make this group’s experi-ence less stressful than those of thethousands upon thousands of pro-spective students who had theirdreams dashed in recent years,”says Dr Felicity Coughlan, directorof the Independent Institute of Edu-cation.
In past years, many prospective
students left their registrations andapplications until the last minute(or even later). Great distress re-sulted when masses of applicationscould not be considered becausethey were late, a candidate’s chosencourse was already fully sub-scribed, or a school-leaver’s aca-demic record disqualified him orher for a chosen path.
“This year’s matrics must act im-mediately to ensure they have suffi-cient time to investigate their op-tions and apply timeously. Takingaction now can save a lot of heart-ache and complications, includingunexpected financial blows, later,”says Coughlan.
She says the following tips willempower students to make the bestchoices for their unique circum-stances, without the pressure oflooming deadlines forcing them ina direction they would not other-
wise have chosen:. Broaden your scope and
check out campuses for yourself.“Guidance teachers at school can
only offer advice on that with whichthey are familiar, which often lim-its their guidance to a smallnumber of public universities. Asmart student will explore optionsin the public and private sector, andwill go to the campuses themselvesrather than blindly trust advertise-ments,” says Coughlan.
. Check the facts.“This is your future so fully ex-
plore registration and accredita-tion, entrance requirements, dura-tion of qualification, price, campussize, equipment, staffing and suc-cess rates. Don’t be fooled by hollowpromises – check the facts on whichall promises are based and if thereare no facts to back them up, walkaway. Read the small print.”

“Youmust apply tomore thanoneinstitution and even across institu-tion types (for instance public andprivate institutions, universitiesand colleges). Trumpeter Vernon Steer will beblowing up a storm at The G-Spotnext week when he launches hisdebut CD.
On Monday 30 April he will begiving the public a taste of what canbe heard on the release when he ap-pears with the Richard Caesar bandat the venue in Epping.
Caesar also produced the record-ing.
Steer confesses that it has been along, and hard journey in music forhim, but the harmony has givenhim lots of joy.
It all started when he listened toLouis Satchmo Armstrong as a five-year-old on his grandmother’sgramophone records.
“It was just something about thetone of the trumpet that intriguedme and I was hooked,” he says.
“I started learning and fromabout 11 started playing in Christ-mas choirs and other bands.”
The family stayed in Claremontand was forcefully moved to Hano-verParkdue to theGroupAreasActwhere Steer spent most of his form-ative years.
At 16 he was already performingin a band called Extraction from
Grassy Park, but loved playing allkinds of music.
“I loved playing anything,” hesays with a sparkle in his eye.
“You would find me playing theballroom scene with Ikey Gamba ona Friday, a pop scene on the Satur-day and on a Sunday get involvedwith a heavy jazz jam in Athlone.But, I just had to be playing all thetime.”
In the early ’80s he recorded thehit song “Kalimba Party” with To-morrow’s World in Johannesburgwhilst also working and recordingwith Jonathan Butler before hebroke into the international mar-ket.
Thereafter he returned to CapeTown and joined the Prison ServiceBand which was disbanded in 1989and the band members were trans-ferred to various prisons as war-dens, but Steer kept up with his mu-sic playing wherever he could.
He played with Paul Simon on hisSA tour in 1994 along with saxo-phonist Micheal Brecker, and ex-Capetonian multi-instrumentalist,Tony Cedras.
Another exciting time was whenhe worked with Afro-jazz brass pio-neers, Mike Mahkalamele andStompie Manana in the WorkforceBand at the popular ’80s jazz haunt,the Village Pub which later becameThe Villa Revue in Maitland.
Another well-known venue heperformed at was the Inn on ThePlain, managed at the time by veter-an crooner, Rudolph Paulse, in the
bands Together and Horizon whichincluded the legendary RobbieJansen.
“This was an exciting time forme,” he says.
“During this time it was almostlike going to university to be work-ing with someone like Robbie be-cause you were always learning somuch more about your craft.
“I also loved performing with theSchilder family; the brothers Tony,Chris and Richard – each one hadtheir own individual style and werealways willing to share their knowl-edge with you.”
Since then he has always been onthe scene performing at a widerange of gigs, his most recent beingwith the group Touchdown at the G-Spot in Epping.
He feels that this is the right timefor his debut release and is veryglad that Richard Caesar is behindthe project.
“We virtually grew up together,”says Steer.
“Apart from being a friend he isa phenomenal performer and peo-ple are going to be knocked out withhis production of the album.”
The album is called Mr T Man,and Caesar is embarking on a newside of his musical journey by as-sisting the many unsung heroes oflocal music to get their material re-corded.

’n Derde agtereenvolgende oorwinning dieafgelope naweek maak Durbanville/Bell-ville tans die vroeë voorloper op die punte-leer in die A-afdeling van die WP se Super-rugbyliga.
Maar dit was grootliks ’n teleurstellende na-week vir die spanne in die Tygerbergstreek,behalwe dat Noordelike/Northlink-kollege enBellville darem ook aan die wenkant was.
Nadat dieDurbies verledeWoensdag ’nveel-seggende oorwinning van 27-19 oor Universi-teit Kaapstad behaal het, het hulle Saterdag
ook 32-10 met die Victoriane afgereken. DieIkeys se nederlaag was die eerste ná 14 agter-eenvolgende oorwinnings sedert verlede sei-soen in die Superliga. Durbanville se voorhoe-de het die studentespan deeglik laat les opsê.
Ook in die wedstryd teen die Victoriane isdie studentespan voorlangs ore aangesit endanksy die Durbies se baie balbesit het hulledie meeste aanvalswerk gedoen. Daarmee is’n bonuspuntdrie ook bewerkstellig.
Hoewel Tygerberg-klub 18-34 teen Schot-sche Kloof/Walmer verloor het – nadat hy metdie draaislag nog 18-12 voor was – kon dieKaapse besoekers eers kort voor die einde ’noorwinning verseker.

Bishop Lavis Cricket Club are stayingwith their winning ways.
Calm and cool heads by the boys fromBishop Lavis ensured that the club remainsunbeaten at Newlands Cricket Stadiumwhen they won their second consecutiveWestern Province 1C AMA-20 final by 5wickets against Milnerton last Sunday.
Milnerton elected to bat first and scored98/6 with Robbie van Harte the pick of theMilnerton batsmen with an unbeaten 47runs.
A 37-run fifth wicket partnership withJohn Maritz (27) helped them to a reasona-ble score after a batting collapse in the mid-dle with both the Bedford brothers failingto contribute with the bat.
Bishop Lavis, who lost their first wicketwith the score on 2, also struggled to gettheir innings off to a good start and it wasa 45-run partnership between the experi-enced Justin Miller (20) and Earl Abrahams(16) that stabilised the innings in the mid-dle.
But at the end it was a memorable in-nings by Simeon Fondling (21 not out) whosteered the boys from Bishop Lavis to theirsecond consecutive title at Newlands. Fon-dlingwasalso rewardedwith theManof theMatch award.
Captain, Dale Rainers was full of praisefor his charges and said the win was not on-ly for the club but the Bishop Lavis commu-nity as a whole.
“It is an honour to represent your clubat Newlands and the occasion is so muchsweeter when you are victorious,” he said.
The Bishop Lavis CC will host their Pres-entation of Awards ceremony this Satur-day (28 April), at the Bishop Lavis CivicCentre starting at 18:30.
