This project is being done by Win- ston Pullen, an ex-SANDF member, under the auspices of the Poverty Relief and Empowerment for Change Organisation (PRECO). A group of concerned women in the area who were worried about the youth as well as drug and alco- hol abuse that affected them, start- ed PRECO in 2003. Most of their projects focus on youth and women with current projects including various types of counselling, drum majorettes, as well as various awareness projects relating to youth. This latest project, the cadets, was started earlier this year and they will be hosting their first exhi- bition on Saturday 9 June in Belhar Drive. Pullen said that the group was very excited about putting on the display but in this short time they had learnt that drilling is about much more than just marching. “When we started many of these children had never encountered the discipline that is needed to make a good drill team, but they soon real- ised that they could only succeed through paying attention and team work. “Currently we have 134 children taking part at this school, but I am hoping to spread this idea into more schools in the area. A similar project in Mitchells Plain has worked wonders in schools where there were problems with disci- pline, and who knows one day we might be able to compete with them,” he said with a smile. Pullen also pointed out that the cadet project was not just about marching. “We also teach them life skills and how to play a positive part in their communities,” he said. “Once a month we identify a sen- ior citizen in the area and go to them to clean the house and yard. “They also learn about life in the army and later this year they will be taken on a camp to a military base for further training. “Our main aim is to show them that to succeed in life there is the need for discipline when it comes to their education, how they are in charge of their destiny.” For more information about the cadet project Pullen can be contact- ed on 084 085 8628 for more details. in the area with fervour.“We are dedicated to eradicating drugs,” was
the statement released by Brigadier HendrikJansen, station commander of Delft when heapplauded his police officers for excellent workdone over the weekend. Jansen said that hisstaff arrested 28 suspects for the illegal posses-sion of drugs, mainly tik and dagga.
Jansen said that drugs with a street value ofmore than R100 000 were seized during disrup-tive operations this weekend, including 86packets of tik, 35 Mandrax tablets and four par-cels and 111 stops of dagga.
A 22-year-old suspect was also arrested forthe illegal possession of a firearm and ammuni-tion.
Jansen added that his staff arrested 212 sus-pects from various ages for the possession ofdrugs for the month of May and arrested sevensuspects for the illegal possession of firearms.Their ages range from 22 to 37 years old.

The MyCiTi bus service is helping toboost local industry and create jobs, asthe first buses for the upcoming centralcity services roll off the production lineat the Busmark factory in Epping.
Busmark 2000 won the R660 million tenderto produce the first 190 nine-metre buses thatwill be needed for the upcoming MyCiTiservices. The company started kitting out itsnew factory just two months ago, and workis progressing fast.
“The first buses have just been finishedand 30 will be produced by the end of June.Approximately 20 more will be finished eachmonth thereafter until all the buses areavailable,” said Malcolm Wilken, generalmanager of Busmark Western Cape.
“We are extremely pleased that a local
company won this contract. They are pro-ducing buses of an outstanding quality. Webelieve this is the beginning of this industry,as many such buses will be needed as BusRapid Transport systems expand in citiesacross South Africa,” said mayoral commit-tee member for transport, roads and storm-water, Brett Herron.
“The buses are Optare Solos, assembledfromkits that are imported fromLeeds in theUK, as they are not available locally. About80 workers are currently employed at the Ep-ping factory and the number will rise to 120next month, when production is in fullswing,” Wilken said.
“Busmark is sourcing tyres, batteries,windscreens, paint, seats and as many otherparts as possible from local suppliers, indi-rectly boosting other local businesses.
“We believe we could export componentsback to the UK, if we can have them pro-duced at competitive prices here. When theUK company had some supply problems re-cently, they sourced parts from South Afri-ca,” Wilken added.
Busmark is based in Randfontein, and setup the Elsies River factory when it wasawarded the MyCiTi contract. Now there arerows of buses, in various stages of comple-tion, along the factory floor. Spraypainters,mechanics, body shapers and welders arehard at work.
The Optare Solos are considerably smallerthan the MyCiTi buses currently in use, andbetter able to navigate the roads and cornersin residential areas.
They are low-floor vehicles with boardingbridges and no steps, to create level boardingat pavement level, allowing the disabled, eld-erly and others with limited mobility to usethe service.
They have air suspension, like the MyCiTibuses currently in service, and meet strin-gent Euro 5 emission standards.
“As a company, we’re particularly proudto be associated with MyCiTi because if youlook at BRT services in South Africa for thefuture of transport, this is the flagship,”Wilken said.

The couple, whoare still passionate about their hometown, were here to attend the 50th anniversaryconcert of legendary singer Zane Adams, and made a difference in the lives of 45 members of this community by getting 45 of their friends in Australia to buy a ticket to givesome residents of Blikkiesdorp this experience of a lifetime. Learners at Hindle High in Delft are tak-ing the rap for making positive choicesin life.
On Monday 28 May there was a beautifulbeat going around the school when the finalround of their rap competition took place.
This competition is part of the PositivePrinciple Project (PPP) at the school and sixteams made it to the third and last round ofthe competition to rap about positive princi-ples, such as honesty, helping and self-disci-pline.
The three best teams were selected, re-warded with gifts and the learners from thewinning team received scholarships as priz-es. The winning team, from Grade 8 learnersrapped about “respect” and they were over-joyed with their achievement.
The school was also overjoyed at a dona-tion of R10 000 from Christo Stoffberg whosupports this school’s attempts to build char-acter strengths and virtues in youth.
Dr Izanette van Schalkwyk is a PositivePsychologist who specialises in character-building, works very closely with the schooland said that this was one of many projects
at the school aimed at empowering learnersto believe in their potential.
“With the PPP we want to inspire all thelearners to be successful, as youngsters andin time as adults,” she said.
“The motto of the school is: “The Road toSuccess” and these principles act as a GPS,namely to show the way to go, for exampleabout decision-making and their behaviourtowards other people.”
The following principles or laws for lifewere selected for the project: respect, hones-ty, helping, excellence, empowerment, andself-discipline. She also pointed out thatwhen the rap competition was launched allyoungsters were encouraged to take part.
“Initially a rap workshop was presentedfor all teams from Grades 8 to 12. The firstand second competitions were held to selectsix teams for the finals.
“This competition was intended to engagethe learners in a youth-friendly manner andto encourage their creativity as to the six se-lected principles.
“Music, and more specifically “rap”, pro-vided a very effective way for the Delft youthto express their understanding of the princi-ples, and everyone took part with lots of en-thusiasm and eagerness,” she said.

Eleven couples will be pulling out all thestops in the hope of becoming the winnersof the 2012 Youth Dance Challenge thiscoming weekend.
Each of the couples has already proved
themselves the best dancers in their respec-tive schools afterwinning the finals thatwereheld on 26 and 27 May in Bellville and GreenPoint.
The ultimate finals takes place this Sunday(10 June) at 14:00 at the Gardens CommercialSchool in the city centre.
Finalists are now busy with the last two
hours of training, learning the seventh newstep in each of the three dances, and polishingtheir techniques and expressions.
At the ultimate finals, the panel of twoDanceCraft judges and three external judgeswill choose the winning couple as well as thefirst and second runners-up.
The winning couple has been invited to per-
form a dance demonstration at the South Af-rican Dance Foundation regional champi-onships, which will take place on 16 June atthe Italian Club in Rugby.
“All finalist couples from the schools inthe northern suburbs have been offered tojoin the two month training programme forthe Artscape School Art Festival,” says com-petition organiser Marina Milanovic.
“The Artscape Festival gives our youngdancers anopportuni-ty to expe-rience a re-al, live andproperstage per-formancefor them-selves.”
Thedance festi-val is heldin Augustevery year.
The finalists of the dance challenge are in-vited to join the studio’s teenage membersgroup who also take part in the festival.

All the illegaldumping in the neighbourhood resulted in a health risk for the community, as seen in the photo above. Children at a Delft educare centre arecelebrating their sight after experienc-ing the life of a blind person.
For Blind Buddy Day this year the chil-dren of the ACVV Creche in Voorbrug weremade aware of how privileged they were be-ing able to see and how the world of the blinddiffered from theirs.
Doing various themes like this with thechildren at the facility has more than onceturned out to be a great experience for thechildren as well as the personnel.
This was the case again when they werevisited by Mark Cummings, of the AthloneSchool For The Blind, and 10 of the learners.
Rene Conradie of the creche said that itwas an interesting, enlightening and fun-filled morning for all involved.
“The children at the creche listened atten-tively as the principalexplained to them thatthere were many rea-sons why people wereblind. Some peoplewere born blind, othersbecame blind as chil-dren or adults becauseof disease or an acci-dent.
“He emphasised thatthe children shouldtake good care of theireyes and that theyshould be very carefulnot to hit a friend in theface or to bring a sharpobject close to theireyes.”
Cummings also ex-plained to the little onesthat their friends visit-ing them that morningwere normal childrenjust like them, exceptthat they could not see.
They could read, write, play games and takepart in sport like any other child.
Learners from the Athlone School for theBlind then demonstrated how they readtheir books written in Braille by runningtheir fingers across the bumps on the pages,how they write with a Braille embosser andhow they play cricket with a special ballwith a bell inside so that they can easily tellwhere the ball is.
Conradie added that the visit was alsovery enlightening for the teachers at the fa-cility. “We saw that blindness did not stopthese children from being active and fromwanting to learn and get an education. Theyare an inspiration to anyone with normaleyesight.”
The visit ended on a high note with every-body enjoying cold drinks and biscuits be-fore playing and bonding on the playground.

Hoogtepunte van wysigings
• Die maksimum bruto maandelikse huishoudelike inkomsteperk virsenior burgers en persone met gestremdhede neem toe van R10 000 totR10 500, en ’n hele klomp laer bruto huishoudelike inkomstekategorieëontvang ’n hoër persentasie korting.
• Die omskrywing van bruto maandelikse huishoudelike inkomste wordgewysig om skenkings en party ongespesifiseerde vorme van finansiëlesteun uit te sluit, en om die ander inwoners op die eiendom wie seinkomste in aanmerking geneem moet word, te herdefinieer.
2. VERBRUIKSTARIEWE EN -HEFFINGSBTW teen 14% moet by die volgende dienste bygevoeg word: water,elektrisiteit, sanitasie en vaste afval.
2.1 WATER
Drie stelle watertariewe is goedgekeur (10%-verminderingstarief,20%-verminderingstarief en 30%-verminderingstarief). Elke tarief is gekoppelaan die vlak van watervermindering wat opgelê word. Aangesien die10%-verminderingstarief as norm by die Waterverordening ingesluit word, saldít die tarief wees wat geld. Dit kan egter later na gelang van verdere vereistebeperkings hersien word.

Hoogtepunte van wysigings
• HULPTARIEF: Kliënte op die hulptarief wat die gemiddelde maandeliksetoegelate verbruik van 450 kWh weens massa-aankope ofseisoensvariasies oorskry, sal teen die toepaslike blokke vir hoër tariewegehef word.
• GRATIS 50 kWh: Kliënte op die hulptarief wat minder as 450 kWhper maand ontvang, sal steeds die gratis basiese toevoer van 50 kWhontvang.
• HUISHOUDELIKE TARIEF: Struktuur van die huishoudelike struktuurverander om dieselfde as die hulptarief te wees, ook ‘n laer blok 1ingestel vir hierdie tarief
• NUWE TYDSPESIFIEKE TARIEF: ’n Nuwe tydspesifieke tarief vir hoëspanning word ingestel vir toevoer van 66 kV of 132 kV, na gelang vandie beskikbare netwerk. Hierdie tarief het dieselfde tydperke, diensfooi envraagheffing as die herdoopte tydspesifieke tarief vir mediumspanning,maar die energieheffings is onderworpe aan ’n 3%-korting weens diekleiner verliese op dié spanningsvlakke.
• Vanaf 1 Julie 2012 sal die kategorie ‘Klein kragverbruiker 1’ met diebuitespits-kombinasie tot slegs bestaande kliënte beperk word. Diebuitespits-komponente neem ook met ’n bogemiddelde bedrag toe aseerste stap in die uitfasering van hierdie tarief.
LW: Maandelikse diensheffings word bereken as die daaglikse diensheffing,vermenigvuldig met die aantal dae in die rekeningtydperk.

The whole victory was builtaround them beating St Andrews inthe scrum. They are one of theschools that still put a lot of focuson the scrum and it paid off for themwhen it really counted.
Youcanstillwingamesbyhavinga dominant scrum. In fact, it is stillthe most important route to win-ning a game.
Good go forward ball allows yourloose forwards to come into the
game much more, and the backsstill get a big kick out of seeing theirscrum dominate their opponents.
St Andrews conceded points fromthe kick-off when they tried to runthemselves out of trouble but in-stead fell foul of the referee at thethe first maul.
Chris October, the St Andrewscoach, said after the game: “I thinkthe times we got into their half, wejust couldn’t convert it into points,so it was not good execution fromour side. It was missed opportuni-ties and a lot of mistakes.”
After the first half, the home teamregroup and picked up their focusand got some points in the secondhalf.

Rico Hattingh became the first lo-cal and third national graduate toa black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsumakinghimoneof the elite in thisdiscipline.
Roberto Attala from Brazil whois a fourth degree black belt andthree time world champion grad-ed Hattingh.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the gentleart of fighting and was designedby smaller people to defend them-selves against much bigger oppo-
nents. It’s also one of the fastestgrowing sports in the world by be-ing responsible for all the latestMixed Martial Arts (MMA) in-cluding EFC and UFC.
“This form of MMA takes thelongest of all forms to graduate toa black belt, so this is very specialto me. I’m also the fifth black belton the Africa continent which isa feather in my cap.
“Roberto who is respectedworld wide in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsucircles told me he doesn’t justgrade anyone to the sought after
black belt and that he can basical-ly count on his one hand howmany guys he graded,” said Hat-tingh.
He has been training and teach-ing for 13 years and was the SouthAfrican heavyweight MMAchampion from 2003-2011.
“I’ve been struggling with inju-ries for some time now and wouldlove to compete in the near futurebut for now my focus is on myacademy (Rico Hattingh’s MixedMartial Arts Academy) andgrooming my students.”

Priscilla Petersen won the Sages senior golftournament for women for the second yearrunning at the Coro Creek and Zebula golfcourses in Limpopo.
Petersen who lives in Kuils River was allsmiles as she lifted theEurekaGowansCup tro-phy recently.
Sages started in 1974 as a result of an increas-ing demand from senior golfers who felt theneed for an organisation that would meet theirrequirements. “It was only as of last year thatthey created a tournament for women. Lastyear at the first tournament that was playedat the Durbanville and Kuils River golf courses
I won the championship over the four days ofcompetitive golf. It was a great feeling to defendmy title successfully.
“This year was much more difficult. I knowand are accustomed to the weather here, butplaying in Limpopo on those difficult courseswas not easy. You really have to think yourway around the course,” said Petersen.
The Monday and Tuesday of the tournamentis played in a team competition with the Thurs-day and Friday singles.
She started playing golf 12 years ago and nev-er looked back.
“I play on average three times a week andenjoy every moment of this great game. Cur-rently I don’t only focus on my golf but on aprogramme called Girls Love Golf.
“This programme was started to get girls be-tween the ages of eight and 14 interested in thegame. The game has given me so much over theyears, I feel it’s time for me to give somethingback.
“On a Saturday morning between 09:45 and11:00 I teach these girls at the Stikland drivingrange the basics of the game. It’s not only theyoungsters I want to focus on, there are a lotof women with potential to play golf. I want toinvite women of 50 years and older to join theSages and have a great time.”

the first round of the 2012 SpurHigh School Mountain BikeLeague on Saturday.
The event will be hosted at theWillowbridge track in Bellvilleand will see riders giving it theirall to secure top scores on the logand a steady start to the excitingseason.
According to race co-ordinator,Meurant Botha, they are expect-ing to have more entries than in2011 and successfully expand thefootprint of mountain biking as asport.
“The League was launched in2009 and has shown tremendousgrowth with more than 2 300 rid-ers taking to the tracks in 2011compared with only 887 riders inthe first year.
“We’re expecting a bumper 2012season with 32 events to be hostedin nine regions across the countryas well as in Lesotho, Namibia andnow also Zimbabwe over the nextfive months,” said Botha.
“The League gives high schoolpupils the chance to representtheir schools in cycling in thesame way as they do with the moretraditional team sports,” men-tions Botha.
Registration (R40) for Satur-day’s racing starts at 07:30 at thevenue and racing will take placefrom 09:00 with prizegiving at13:15.
Riders can enter in the follow-ing categories: Nipper boys (10years and under), nipper girls (10years and under), sprog boys(11–12), sprog girls (11 –12), sub-junior boys (13–14), youth boys (15-16), girls (13-14/15-16), girls (17-18)and junior men (17-18).

The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation andAmenities Department, in partnership withthe South African Rugby Union (SARU), is hos-ting the annual International Rugby Board Ju-nior World Championship from 4 to 22 June at
the Danie Craven Stadium and UWC Stadium.The u-20 teams from the following 12 coun-
tries are participating: Argentina, Australia,England, Fiji, France, Ireland, Italy, New Zea-land, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa and Wales.
South Africa plays Italy on Friday at UWC(18:45) and England on Tuesday at Danie Cra-ven Stadium (18:45). South Africa needs to uptheir game after Monday nights loss to Ireland.
The play-offs start on Sunday.
