Road safety can lead to safer

communities as Belhar becomes

partofaglobal initiative toguide

youth on the right path.

Safe Roads 4 Youth will be

launched in the area on Saturday

and its effects could lead to major

changes in all areas as youth in the

community become aware of their

responsibility for safety on the

roads.

Community police forum chair-

man in the area, Pat America, said

that this is a major initiative for

Belhar and the surrounding areas.

Along with an area inMpulanga

we are the only communities that

have been chosen for this project in

the world, he said.

The other stakeholder involved

in this project is the Global Road

Safety Partnership and the South

African Red Cross society with the

main aim of preventing young peo-

ple fromdriving drunkorunder the

influence of drugs.

While road safety is the main fo-

cus the wider implication is that

youth become aware of how alcohol

and drugs can destroy their lives,

not just in accidents but in their

general lives as well.

This programme will be devel-

opedwith the active involvement of

the stakeholders and youth.

Over the next two years differ-

ent types of activities will be devel-

oped, designed jointlywith the com-

munity, continued America.

These include educational pro-

grammes, community prevention

and control, awareness campaigns

and close co-operationwith parents

and other adults.

The results of these activities

will be evaluated by a research

team from theUniversity of Stellen-

bosch and will be shared and com-

pared with results from other coun-

tries.

Research from this project will

improve the understanding of the

impact of cultural factors in the ef-

fectiveness of preventative actions

against driving while under the in-

fluence.

The Safe Roads 4 Youth project is an inter-

national project that carries out preventa-

tive interventions at community level aimed

at mobilising communities to stop drunk

driving starting with young adults.

America pointed out that, apart from

South Africa, this project is being undertak-

en in two other countries, Vietnam and Ar-

gentina.

The project will be developed in each

country in partnership with major non-prof-

it organisations and specialised research

teams from local universities thatwill evalu-

ate the influence of local culture and social

activities.

With the official launch on Saturday itwill

be followed by extensive training for rele-

vant communitymembers, Red Cross volun-

teers and other stakeholders.

Training will include a road safety ele-

ment that focuses on alcohol and drugs as a

risk factor.

There will also be an induction into inter-

national approaches to road safety, theWest-

ern Cape Provincial Road Safety projects as

well as a community health and first-aid pro-

gramme.

The launch on Saturday will be held at Dr

Van Der Ross Primary school in Belhar,

starting at 10:00.

It will include various speakers from local

council and the police, as well as entertain-

ment from the Drifters Car Club, and music

from local youth.

DrVan der Ross primary is inKoebergAv-

enue in Extension 13, Belhar.

tion is calling on local talents to strut their

stuff.

Starting at the end of September they will

be hosting the Belhar Gospel Talent Competi-

tion for choirs, singers, groups and dancers

Huguenot Hall in Belhar Drive on Tuesdays

and Wednesdays from 10:00 to 14:00.

Finalists will be chosen over a period of

threemonths and thewinnerswill be showca-

sed in a special Christmas Concert that will

The Delft Big Band just keeps spreading

their positive vibes, and theyre heading

for a major music festival in Johannes-

burg.

Next week they will be winging their way

up north where they will be performing at

Africas foremost music industry event, the

Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition.

This will be taking place from 5 to 7 Sep-

tember and it is a gathering of music indus-

try professionals in southern Africa and the

rest of the continent.

Started in 2008 by well-known musician

Ian Smith (of Virtual Jazz Reality fame), the

group has grown from strength to strength

featuring at someof the top festivals andven-

ues in Cape Town and the Western Cape.

A section of the group has also performed

in Norway as part of a special global chil-

drens initiative. After their first appear-

ance last year they were invited back again

this year.

The group comprises learn-

ers from three schools in the ar-

ea, and since starting some of

the members have matriculat-

ed and now study music.

Smith is very proud of the

achievements of the band

which operates with very little

funding from government or

sponsors.

This project has become

very important in the lives of

all taking part in it, he says.

Its more of a family now be-

cause even those that have ma-

triculated still feel that they

want to be a part of it.

My greatest wish is that the

corporateworldwould comeon

board in the absence of govern-

ment funding because it is not

just about the music for these

children.

In an area where drugs,

crime and gangsterism is rife

they are proving that there is a

lot of positivity that can come

from this area.

The dedication that they ap-

ply in learning music is going

through to their studies and

they are realising that with ef-

fort everything is possible.

A dedicated community worker

is growing roses of a very differ-

ent kind.

Danneline Daniels has started

the Rose Club project at primary

schools in the area but these roses

wont be found in your garden.

This unique project is reaching

out to young girls in the community

to empower them to find a positive

path for their lives even in themost

disadvantaged circumstances.

Daniels was inspired to start this

project because research that she

did showed that many young girls

were becoming victims of abuse,

through dysfunctional families and

other negative influences.

Drug abuse, crime and gangster-

ismwere playing a big part inmany

young girls becoming part of the

growing statistics of teenage preg-

nancies, she said.

Girls as young as nine were be-

coming pregnant, having to under-

go abortions and getting into drugs

and I felt that I wanted to be part of

changing their lives.

I want this initiative to play a

major role in showing these young

girls that they can be equippedwith

the skills to fight against these cir-

cumstances and achieve something

positive in their lives.

Since starting in JulyDaniels has

started a club at Vorentoe Primary,

and Wepner Primary in Ravens-

mead, as well as at the Ravensmead

High School.

A major part of the initiative is

starting a library at the school if

there is not one because she feels

that reading is an important tool for

these children.

While reading is important for

themwe also do a lot of other activi-

ties that are fun for them, but it also

gives them a sense of life skills that

can empower them.

This project is also very impor-

tant to Daniel from a personal point

of view.

As a child I needed someone to

reach out to me and tell me that

things are going to be okay, she

says.

I was unfortunate not to have

that and had to grow up being

strong from the age of four, that is

why I have decided to give back to

these girls and fight for them.

My aim is to change their mind-

set to let them know that they are

not to blame for the family circum-

ARavensmead ensemble is gearing up to

launch its debut gospel jazz album in

Goodwood this weekend.

Members of theHeinrich Isaacs Ensemble

(also known as H.I.E), describe themselves

as anurban, gospel bandwitha jazz andR&B

sound.

The band started in 2009, as the brainchild

of Heinrich Isaacs, a well established Cape

Town saxophonist.

He explains that in the beginning, they

were simply a few friends jamming together,

until he was approached by a fan, with the

idea to establish a formal band.

The band now includes Divan Adams on

keyboards, Lesley Canary on bass guitar,

Reginald Pretorius on guitar and Warren

Adams on drums. Theresa Abrahams, Rox-

anne Francis, Natasha Groenewald and

Trevor Abrahams all see to the vocals.

Heinrich says the timing was just right

to work on their album, Forever Grateful,

now.

Their manager, Paul Davids explains that

the band name was growing fast, and that

even though they had toured extensively,

they had nothing to leave behind.

What was lacking was amarketing tool,

Paul says.

Musically, theres a variety from ballads

to up-tempo songs, Heinrich says of the CD.

Paul explains that theywanted to open the

album up to cater for all kinds of tastes. The

album even features a rap and Heinrich

singing a hymn, with nothing but a key-

board.

People will be pleasantly surprised by

the final product, he says.

The album will be launched on Sunday 2

September at New Faith Church in Good-

wood from 19:30. The launch will feature

Chadleigh (Mr Africa) Gowar, Trevino

Isaacs, Chrystal Swanson,WayneBosch and

Jason Ward.

Tickets cost R50 and theCDcosts R100, but

there will also be CD and ticket combos for

n Liefdevolle persoon wat altyd ander

Leon Hartshorne (58), die hoof van die

Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum in

Parow, onthou word deur almal wat

hom geken het.

Die dood van Leon verlede Dinsdag nadat

hy gediagnoseer is met longkanker, was n

groot verlies vir sy vrou, Janette, en sy ge-

sin, n vir klassieke musiekliefhebbers in

Suid-Afrika en selfs in die buiteland. Hon-

derde studente het in sy tyd deur die mu-

sieksentrum se deure beweeg. Baie van hul-

le het intussennasionale en selfs internasio-

nale aansien verwerf.

Mense uit alle vlakke van die lewe het gis-

ter (Dinsdag) by die NG kerk Kenridge

saamgekom om hulde aan hom te bring. Sy

gesin en vriende het ook n gedenkteken

aangebring om sy lewe te vier.

wer.

Leon was n dromer en het altyd alles

probeer om sy drome waar te maak, vertel

Janette. Hulle was amper 30 jaar getroud en

sy s dit was die beste tyd van haar lewe.

Hy was altyd vol verrassings. Op Valen-

tynsdag het twee vliegtuigkaartjies na Pa-

rys vir my by die huis gewag. Dit is net hoe

hy was. Vir sy twee kinders was hy n ver-

skriklike liefdevolle pappa, altyd trots op

hulle en wou vir hulle die beste gee.

Sy dink met heimwee aan al die herinne-

ringe. Hy het altyd die lekkerste kos ge-

maak en was die beste geselskap. Hy was

ook lief vir lees. Ons het altyd gegrap dat hy

n regte huishoender was. Hy was verskrik-

lik lief vir kuns, musiek en om in sy tuin

te werk dit was terapeuties vir hom.

Sy s: Onsmis hom.Hyhet altyd n vuur-

tjie aangesteek en die hele gesin het lekker

saamgekuier, maar ons weet hy is in n plek

waar ons almal eendag sal wees. Dit is hoe-

kom ons sy lewe wil vier.

Die Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum

het n studieleier met buitengewone eien-

skappe verloor. Leon was volkome gerig op

die aktiwiteite van die sentrum.

Afgesien van sy pligte as skoolhoof en ad-

ministrateur inkunstige beplanning enper-

soneelontwikkeling, het hy ook opleiding

gegee in klarinet, orkes- en ensemble en het

hy selfs bygedra tot die verfraaiing van die

sentrumgeboue en -gronde. Hy het dikwels

sommer self sy hande in die grond gedruk.

Hy is gerespekteer as eksaminator oor die

hele land en vir verskeie baanbrekerspro-

jekte, soos die jaarlikse Hugo Lambrechts-

konsertfees en die SAMRO-Hubert van der

Spuy se nasionale musiekkompetisie.

Hilda Boonzaaier, n musiekonderwyser

en baie goeie vriend van Leon, s hy het n

groot nalatenskap agtergelaat. Hywasbaie

goed vir musiek in die algemeen. Hy het

deure oopgemaak vir baiemense en studen-

te. Hy het groot drome gehad en kon altyd

mense kry om saam met hom te droom en

die groter prentjie te sien. Sy s hy het baie

wonderlike veranderinge bydiemusieksen-

trum aangebring en nooit die doel uit sig

verloor om dit nog te verbeter nie. Hy was

n goeie persoon en ons mis hom.

Helping street people that is the aim of the

Tygerberg Association for Street People

(TASP) who are gearing up to get homeless

people off the street.

They delivered a presentation at the Sub-

council 4meeting onThursdaywhere they ex-

plained what they will be doing.

The plan is to assist as many street people

as possible and roll the plan out to as many

areas as possible.

To date areas which have been successful

include Ravensmead and Uitsig.

We need to stop the people frommoving to

the street, says Linda de Vries, chairperson

of the Tygerberg Association for Street Peo-

ple. We need to create a network of support

for the people who are on the street. Our pro-

gramme has various phases. The first phase

will be where the group of street people who

are to be assisted participate in a one-day

workshop to evaluate their needs. The second

and third phase consists of a six-month long

workshop where there will be one on one ses-

sions as well as group sessions.

She says theworkshopswill focus on assist-

ing the homeless people with leadership

skills, team building, project management

and also provide them with the skills to men-

tor each other with the skills they have been

taught.

So far we can see that the people who are

taken off the streets really work hard at what

they want, she says.

They have goals and plans for their lives

and that is what we want to assist them with.

Working with them is a humbling and uplift-

ing experience for all of us.

De Vries says another important thing

which the street people are assisted with is fi-

nancial skills.

These people have not workedwithmoney

for awhile and it is imperative that they know

how to work with their finances.

Clive Justus, chairperson of Subcouncil 4,

says that the programme sounds promising,

but it is the outcomes that count.

The Welgelegen non-profit organisation

cares for life limited or life threatened spe-

cial needs children and also supports their

families.

It was certainly no surprise to see the

crme de la crme arrive in stunning attire

during the masked ball.

Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille,

was one of the many guests to don a mask

during the luxurious evening.

So many people are going beyond any-

thing which is considered an appropriate

sacrifice or contribution to be the people

they value, but more importantly to enable

other people to live the lives theyvalue. That

is why were here tonight, said Zille in a

particularly stirring speech.

It makes a difference when you know

from your heart what it means to parents

of childrenwith disabilities to have the sup-

port, compassion and solidarity of people

who do not judge, but listen and offer help

when needed.

She went on to say that the tragedy isnt

those people who Iris House supports, but

rather the many hundreds the organisation

are not yet able to support. Funds are need-

ed to expand the reach of the organisation,

so functions like these have far-reaching ef-

fects.

Iris Houses Sue van der Linde says it was

an evening to remember. The significant

awareness factor is fantastic. Having the

premier there was just the cherry on top!
