It is suspected that a Parklands couple had an argument on Thurs- day morning, which built in intensity in the mind of the man throughout the day. Later that night, fuming with anger, he showed up at the wom- an’s place of work and held her hostage. Two hours later he stabbed her in the head and then tried to cut his own wrists. Table View police spokesperson, W/O Daphne O’Reilly, says the woman works at a video store in Ash- wood Centre, Park- lands. “An unresolved argument resulted in all of this. The man turned up at the store just after 19:30, probably with the intention of carrying on this dispute,” says O’Reilly. The man then apparently took out a knife and forced it against the woman’s throat.People who witnessed the incident immediately notified the police and within minutes they arrived on the scene. A hostage negotiator and the task force were also called in once the situation was as- sessed.“The hostage negotiator tried his best to diffuse the tension, but despite being in there for a long time he was unable to,” she continues. “The man then stabbed the woman in her head and then he cut his own wrists.” It was around about this time when onlook- ers claimed they saw flashes and heard bangs. It was believed that shots had been fired, but the police did not confirm this. How- ever, two stun gre- nades were apparently used to disorientate the suspect. Just after the sus- pect had slit his wrists, the task force swept down and both the man and the woman were rushed to Somerset Hospital after receiving immediate medical attention. “Everything was over just after 22:00,” says O’Reilly,. Theman is facing charges of assaultwith theintent to commit grievous bodily harm.O’Reilly adds that even thoughhostage sit-

uations are rare in Cape Town, there are al-ways trained negotiators on hand to re-spond.Most of themare police officers, so hostage

negotiation isn’t their only responsibility.

Domestic disputes and abuse within fami-lies are rife, however.O’Reilly emphasises that there are many

avenues a person who feels threatened byhis/her partner can take.“We have organisations such as the Com-

munity Intervention Centre and FamiliesSouth Africa (Famsa) who can help people

to resolve domestic disputes.“One can also get a protection order, so

there are structures in place to help some-one.“People don’t need to suffer through abuse

alone,” she emphasised. The identity of the couple is being with-

held until the man has appeared in court.

The Melkbos NeighbourhoodWatch (MNW)will be starting with their monthly “staticpatrol initiative”,which formspart of its vis-ibility plan. The first patrol will take place on 5 Sep-

tember from 15:00 to 17:00 and will run inconjunction with planned police activity inthe area. The purpose of static patrols is to create

visibility as well as creating a strong watchpresence in the area.Four patrol groups, each consisting of two

vehicles with watch decals and orangelights, will be parked at various strategicpoints for the two-hour period.Members areencouraged to assist in the initiative.Thewatch requires eight vehicles in total. They are also looking for someone to take

control of and coordinate the static patrolson a monthly basis.V SMS or email Trevor Courtney on 083 261 2181 [email protected] for more information.

The Durbanville police are warning resi-dents about a couple pretending to be stuckalongside the roadwithout petrol, but are ac-tually defrauding people out of their money.According to Lt Marchell Rhode, spokes-

person of the Durbanville police, the policereceived a call from a concerned residentabout an incident on Klein Roosboom Roadoutside Durbanville.“They stop vehicles on the road to ask the

drivers for petrol money as they pretend tobe without petrol,” Rhode says.“But oncepeople give them money, they drive away.”He says this has happened several times. The Durbanville police are currently con-

ducting an investigation and brought thecouple in for questioning. No arrests havebeen made, because no criminal charge hasyet been laid. Readers with any informationregarding such incidents are urged to con-tact the police as soon as possible. In some instances awomanseems to be sit-

ting alone in the vehicle, while a man is ly-ing on the back seat of the car, says Col Mar-ius Swanepoel of the Durbanville police.According to Swanepoel they sometimes

have small childrenwith them. There is alsomore than one vehicle involved with thesamemodus operandi.Hewarnedpeople notto be taken in by this scam.

Residents and businesses which createtheir own electricity from renewableenergy sources will soon have the op-

tion of feeding a limited amount of theirsurplus energy back into the grid. This will be used as an incentive to be off-

set against their electricity accounts. The implementation of the small-scale

embedded generation (SSEG) tariffs willmake it legally possible to feed electricalpower back into the municipal grid. Most SSEG projects generate electricity

fromrenewable sources suchas the sunandwind.According toClive Justus, chairperson of

sub council 4, the City is embracing SSEGtechnology to assist with the country’sacute power shortage.“By doing so, we are assisting businesses

and households tominimise their own elec-tricity consumption,” he says.Consumerswhowish to feedSSEG-gener-

ated electricity into themunicipal electrici-ty grid will be required to have a bi-direc-tional advanced meter infrastructure(AMI) installed by the City at their owncost. The City’s Electricity Services Depart-

ment is finalising the outstanding costs andan announcement about the first consumerto be signing an SSEG agreement with theCity is imminent. It is a legal requirement that consumers

wishing to connect SSEG to the grid mustobtain consent inwriting from the Directorof Electricity Services.According to Justus, theCityhas set itself

a target of sourcing 10% of its electricityfrom renewable energy resources by 2020and the roll-out of the small-scale embeddedgeneration tariff supports this goal.In a pilot project, a small number of con-

sumers have already connected rooftopphotovoltaic (PV) generation to the City’selectricity grid. However, conventional metering instal-

lations do not allow for a two-way flow ofelectricity and the City has been runninga project in search of a solution.“The implementation of the small-scale

embedded generation (SSEG) tariffs willmake it legally possible to feed electricalpower back into the municipal grid,” saysJustus.

National Book Week ends on 7 Septemberand in this time library patrons have the op-portunity to return overdue material to Citylibraries without having to pay fines.

A joint initiative between the Departmentof Arts and Culture and the South AfricanBook Development Council, the week aimsto promote and embrace the value of rea-ding. This year’s theme is “Going Places” fo-cusing on the power of books and how theycan take you places – both in terms of pro-gress and imagination.

Reading statistics show that only 14% ofthe South African population are activebook readers, and only 5% of parents readto their children. “Returning long overduebooks is something everyone loathes do-ing,” says mayco member for CommunityServices and Special Projects, Belinda Wal-ker.

“But any library materials returned lateduring National Book Week are exemptfrom a fine for this week only.”

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

The management of Eric Miles Cheshi-re Home have been doing everythingin their power to raise the money nee-

ded to keep their doors open. They have been left with no choice but to

inform six residents that they will have toleave the home at the end of September, af-ter it came to light that the home is runningat a loss.

Brian Camp, Nandisa Stefaans and Hei-ron Joseph, Ricardo Emery (who is a para-plegic) and quadriplegics Wayne van derHeever and Julian Peters will have to findnew accommodation if they cannot come upwith funding. According to manager AletBosman, two of the six, Joseph and Camp, were offered accommodation at TurfhallCheshire Home, which they declined.

Running at a lossLast year in May the residents were infor-

med that the home in Milnerton will haveto close its doors. Since then managementhas managed to safeguard the future of allof the 42 residents but the six.

“Last year we informed everyone thatour deficit per month is about R50 000. Atthat rate we would have had to close withintwo years. We cut costs dramatically and se-arched as far as France for funding,” saysBosman.

she says it is vital that the residents’ fami-lies help foot the bill as it costs the homeR6 768 per resident per month.

Each month, the government gives thehome R1 947 per resident. On top of this, eachpensioner receivesR1 000, thedisabili-ty grant pays out R300, and each residentis sponsored R250 per month. This meansthat the home loses R3 571 per resident, per

month.“The vast majority of the residents, along

with a handful of sponsors, are now payingthis bare minimum amount. We are nowleft with no option but to remove the six inquestion at the end of the month unless so-meone can fund the shortfall every month.”

The fact that two of the six residents wereoffered alternative accommodation, whichthey refused, irks the manager.“Our othertwo homes also have a waiting list, but theysaid they will allow these two to jump thequeue,” she added.

Families not contributingBosman is equally perturbed by how the

families have been refusing to pay the smallamount per month, saying she later disco-vered that it is well within their means todo so.

Despite the home’s best efforts at raisingmoney for the residents, one of the six inquestion has even threatened that he willerect a shack opposite the home to show ma-nagement in a bad light.

Bosman adds, however, that no onewould be unwelcome at Eric Miles as longas they can cover their individual shortfallsand if there is space available.

If the six residents pay this shortfall ona monthly basis, or if the home fills theirspots with residents who can, then the ho-me will finally balance its books.

Their plea for funding has never dissipa-ted, but it could be argued that they arenow, more than ever, in need of a financialparachute.

Bosman concludes: “We have been toldby the government that we are a sterlingexample of how a home can cut costs andmake do with little money, yet when we toldthem of our plight they just said that wewould have to close our doors then.”

Disabled to beevicted from home

Milnerton police are looking for eye wit-nesses regarding an accident which tookplace on Bosmansdam Road more than twoyears ago.

According to police spokesperson, W/ODaphne O’Reilly, the serious accident hap-pened on 24 June 2012, at 19:35.

She elaborates:“On arrival police members found a sil-

ver Opel Corsa hatchback in the middle ofthe road.

“The vehicle collided with a street poleopposite Eagle Park. Upon investigation, police found two occupants in the vehicle. An elderly man was the driver and an elder-ly woman the passenger.”

It is alleged that the driver of the vehiclelost control in the heavy rain, then jumpedthe curb and collided with a pole.

Paramedics were on the scene to give at-tention to the injured. The man was takento Groote Schuur Hospital and the womandied on the scene as a result of injuries. Noother vehicle was apparently involved.

“We are requesting anyone with informa-tion or a eye witness to the incident to comeforward to assist with the investigation. Acase of culpable homicide was opened,” con-cludes O’Reilly.V Anyone with information can contact the investigating officer, Constable Jacques Louw on021 528 3800.

Residents living in Highcliff Crescent in Sunningdale teamed up with the City of Cape Town toupgrade a park in their street.

Proud dad behindpark’s makeoverANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

Eighteen month-old Leané Rademanwas the inspiration behind a park inSunningdale getting a facelift.

Thepark inHighcliff Crescentnowboastsa jungle-gym, bench, dustbin and five youngtrees.Leon Rademan lives in the street and was

a little worried for his daughter to have aplacewhere she can go play once she’s olderand saw that the nearby open space wouldbe the ideal location. His vision finally came to fruition two

weeks ago when the City of Cape Town hel-ped a few residents to erect the jungle-gym.This park has become one of the few

which residents have ‘adopted’ as part ofthe City’s Adopt-a-Park intiative.

AdoptaparkLocal ward councillor Heather Brenner

urges other communities to follow Rade-man’s example and do the groundwork toraise the funds needed to make the dreamsa reality.InHighcliff Crescent, a group of re-sidents contributed towards the cost of the

jungle-gym and the City covered the costsof the bench, dustbin and trees, as well ashelping residents feel drawn to visit thepark again.Rademan says he approached the cres-

cent’s Facebook group and asked locals fordonations.

Bettering the community“We raised just over a thousand rand, and

with the help of Melanie Apostoli-Parkingwe found a second-hand jungle-gym that wecould afford,” says Rademan. He thankedthe City, resident Rory Keane for helpingout, and every single person who contribu-ted towards this project.“Now Leané will not only be able to play

on the equipment, but also make friendswith the neighbourhood kids. That is howI grew up and I want the same for her! I alsothought it might be a good place for parentsto meet with one another and get to knowtheir neighbours a little better.”Brenner concludes: “In most situations

the City will contribute towards the upkeepof these parks. There are, of course, certainconditions of what the community may ormay not do.”

The municipal by-election for Ward 23will not be held on 17 September, as ini-tially reported. Instead, it has been sched-uled for 5 November, if there are no objec-tions.TygerBurger quoted Provincial DAspokesperson, Liza Albrecht in lastweek’s edition that the elections will beheld on 17 September. But the provisionaldate of 5 November will give prospectivecandidatesmore time to convince the pub-

lic that they deserve their votes.Registered voters who live in Ward 23

(Big Bay; Blaauwbergstrand; Blouberg;CapeFarms; east ofWest Coast Road, westof the R304; north of the Sunningdale/Parklands built-up area; Melkbosstrandand parts of Table View) will be given thechance to vote for their newward council-lor.V Go to www.iec.org.za for more information.

The power of social media has thrown thespotlight on a well-known West Coast Vil-lage restaurant after a staff member tried tosteal a customer’s cellphone.Parklands resident Sasha du Plessis says

she will definitely not go to the restaurantagain after the whole affair left a bad tastein her mouth.“Someone must have taken my phone off

our table while my husband and I changedour baby’s nappy. I saw it was gone, but keptthinkingmyhusbandwas hiding it fromme. After I went to the Pick n Pay he said he

didn’t have it. I went back to the restaurantto go look for it, when a senior employeeasked me what I was looking for,” she ex-plains.Du Plessis claims that the employee de-

nied having seen the cellphone, only for herto spot it sticking out of his front pocket. She immediately grabbed the cellphone

and identified it as her own. However, she later discovered that some-

onehaddeletedhalf of her contacts and somemessages, so she posted her story on socialmedia websites, spreading the word of herunpleasant experience.Speaking to TygerBurger, the manager of

the restaurant explains: “As soon as I heard

about the attack on social media I went tothe restaurant to investigate. It turned outthat one of the waiters took the phone andstarted deleting contacts. One of the seniorpersonnel took the phone from himwith thethought of keeping it until someone phonedso that he could return it. The waiter wasimmediately fired so the situation has beenhandled. Unfortunately the name of the res-taurant has taken some damage because ofsocial media.”Du Plessis has not reported the matter to

the police. She concludes: “If there is anything I have

learnt from this then it’s never to leave yourcellphone unattended – no matter what!”

Smatterings of the invasive wild sunflo-wer have been spotted in Melkbosstrand,Parklands and various places in the nort-hern suburbs. The largest groupwas found inAtlantis,

where a recentwildfire left the site distur-bed, allowing the wild sunflower to esta-blish itself. If left unmanaged, the wild sunflower

has the potential to take over this site andsuppress the fynbos from recovering afterthe fire.“The flower heads and seeds have been

removed and incinerated at all the identi-fied sites to prevent the wild sunflowerfrom spreading any further.“Plants have been removed and all sites

will be monitored to ensure that the cont-rol methods have been effective.“This is an active demonstration of Ca-

pe Town’s environmentally aware com-

munity working with the local govern-ment to create a more sustainable city, to-gether,” says the City’s mayoralcommittee member for economic, envi-ronmental and spatial planning, Johanvan der Merwe. This is the first time that the wild sun-

flower has been recorded in the WesternCape. The Early Detection, Rapid Response

programme – a partnership between theSouth African National Biodiversity In-stitute, the Natural Resources Manage-ment Programmes and the City – relies onthe residents of Cape Town to reportsightings of any of the target species aswell as potential new invaders. The plantswill then be removed by a dedicated team.V Residents who would like to participate in theprogramme can visit www.capetowninvasives.org.za.

Watch out for this wild weedThe wild sunflower (Verbesina encelioides) has been spotted in Parklands, Melkbosstrand andAtlantis.

Some people go to the mall to shop. Othersprefer going there to bearing shield, laserflip and perform ludicrous ollies.CanalWalkwas the place to be on Sunday

when the best skaters in South Africa com-peted for a spot in the Kimberleyworld ska-teboarding campionships. They fell, of course, but these artists

know how to look cool while doing so. Fal-ling is, however, just a by-product of outra-geousness.But that rule might ormight not be appli-

cable in this situation.

The KDC Grand Slam event powered by5FM offered three days of non-stop skatebo-arding action this weekend.Prizes worth R50 000 as well as an all-ex-

penses paid trip to compete in the Kimber-ley Diamond Cup world skateboardingchampionships were up for grabs.Shoppers were left in awe at the tricks

these acrobatic lunatics were performingright in the middle of the mall. This was the fourth and last grand slam

event of the year and rumours have it thatCape Town kickflips Kimberley, pop-sho-ves Johannesburg and nose grinds Durban.

Being infatuatedwith fitness has its ad-vantages.For one, you can go to Zofingen and

cycle and run up and down the Swiss Alps. For most of us, it’s exhausting just look-

ing at the elevation graph of the DuathlonWorld Championships in Switzerland, nev-er mind actually doing it. Yet, Milnerton’sRohan Kennedy and Table View’s Annieand Mark Lemmon are expected to be con-quering this route in double quick time onSunday 7 September.Last year in October, TygerBurger came

as close to the actual physical exertion asit could when it ran an article about the

Lemmons’ latest exploits in Switzerland. The article read: “Annie (whose real age

is 26 and ID age is 52) and Mark (whose IDtells him he’s 48, despite feeling 22) camethird and 13th in their age groups respec-tively.”This year Annie claims her parents must

have falsified her ID, because it indicatesthat she is 53 years old.The spring chicken Rohan is 34.Last year theMellons took an hour off the

time clocked in 2012, and this year they’reaiming to cut it down even more.“Can you believe we need to go and climb

the same mountains again?” she says witha hint of exasperation. The duathlon is reserved for a special

kind of person who can run 10 km, cycle150 km, and then run again for 30 km.“It’s extremely tough, but the three of us

like tough. We thrive on those Swiss moun-tains and love to see how far we can pushthe limits of our bodies and ourminds,” sheelaborates.“During someof our training sessions the

wind can be very horrible and cold, and youoften think, ‘Why am I doing this?’ Yourmind starts playing tricks on you. But thenyou come to the realisation that you’re un-doubtedly preparing in more difficult con-ditions than some of the other competitors. It is hardly surprising to see us training inthe rain. Some rainy mornings when westart, Rohan and Kelly van der Toorn fromTable Viewwill just be returning from a sixhour ride.”While listening to Annie, one would be

forgiven for thinking Table View and Mil-nerton is the fitness capital of SouthAfrica. This week Monday Annie, Mark and Ro-

han departed for Europe, but before theygot on the plane Annie gave a parting shotto all the couch potatoes out there.“Get off your asses and start doing a

sport!“The thrills you get when achieving and

how your body reacts to the limits you setfor it is just amazing. The feel-good factoris awesome!”

Taking the stress out ofmoving house

Moving house can be a traumatic experience, but by planning ahead, much of thepain can be prevented.

Some say thatmoving is one of themost stres-sful life events, so being prepared is half thebattle. This checklist may help in taking thebite out of moving house.

V Decide on amoving date (usually the com-pletion date) as soon as contracts have beenexchanged.

V Avoid Fridays and long weekends whenremoval firms are in high demand and will bestretched – and may charge more. For a lessstressful move, opt for off-peak times such as mid-week.

V Call in the professio-nals. Ask friends or relativeswho havemoved recently torecommend removal firms.

V Ensure your possessi-ons are insured for transit. Most removal companiesprovide this, but checkwhatit covers and whether thereare exclusions. For example, anything you pack may notbe covered by the removalfirm’s insurance. And if youare planning to transport any precious itemsyourself, check that these are covered whenin transit by your contents insurance.

V Before the removal firm arrives, have aclear out. Valuable items that are no longerneeded can be auctioned or sold to a second-hand furniture dealer or in a backyard sale.Other items can be donated to charity shopsor recycled.

V Make a list. You’ll thank yourself later. Be-fore you pack even one box, create a simplerecord keeping system. Create a computer-

printed list of numbers with a space to writethe contents. Or have a spiral-bound notebookfor the job.

You’ll place a number on EVERY box you packand list the contents on your list. Don’t put thelist down unless it’s in a place you’ll call PackingCentral. This is where you’ll find your labels, marking pens, box tape, and other supplies. When describing the box contents, be specific– “A-D files”is better than “files”, and “tulip dis-

hes” rather than “misc. kit-chen”.

V Have plenty of supplies. You’ll need lots of boxes – pro-bably more than you think, and having enough boxeswillmake your life easier. (If youbuy your boxes from a mo-ving company, you can al-ways return unused boxes fora refund. If you got them freefrom the grocery, just tossany leftovers.)

Have about 10 boxes set asi-de touse for lastminute itemson moving day, such as bed-

ding, clothing, and cleaning supplies. You’ll needstrong plastic packing tape to close up the box-es securely. Use unprinted newsprint, packingpaper or bubble-wrap towrap and cushion hou-sehold goods. Again, you’ll need lots more sup-plies than you think, so get extra so the packingcan go smoothly.

V Get someone to look after the children forthe day of the move. The same goes for pets –or book them into kennels or a cattery. Ensurethey have identity tags with their new address.

V Make a scale plan of each room in your new

home to give to the removal teamso, in theo-ry, they know exactly where everything isto go. Colour-code packing boxes, cases andfurniture in the hope that this will mean itends up in the right rooms.

V Hire professional cleaners to give yournew place a thorough going over before youmove in. Some removal firms will arrangeto do this. No one wants to arrive late in thenight at your new home and then have toget up in the morning and start a taxingspring clean.

V Compile a fact file for the people whoare moving into your property, such as in-

struction leaflets and service information forthe heating system and appliances, togetherwith details of rubbish collection, recyclingschemes and so on.

V Round up all the keys to your home, inclu-ding those left with neighbours, nannies andrelatives, and give them to your estate agent.

V Final preparations should includemakingan inventory of everything to be moved, advi-sing the post office to redirect your post andcancelling the newspapers if you have themdelivered.V Article sourced from www.primelocation.com andwww.interiordec.about.com.Get someone to look

Cost-effectiveways to give your house a facelift

Painting some of your walls will give your home a fresh new look.

New place looking drab and bleak and yourcash flow looking sad? Or crippled by bondrepayments or rent? No problem!

Learn to be bold with colour, how to makethemost of things you have already, and howto give some character to a space you mayfind a little depressing.

Here’s how to make a little go a long wayin your new home:

A large Indian clothThis can cover up a ghastly old second

hand armchair or sofa, or be a fabulous wallhanging, tablecloth, or bed cover.

It can even serve as a room divider whenhung from the ceiling. Bull denim is also dirtcheap, lasts forever and can be used for allthe above. I have even seen large pieces ofcloth stuck to a floor using drawing pins ina low-traffic area of the house. Kelims are al-so inexpensive and look fabulous anywhere.

A dash of paintPaint is expensive, so follow the new trend

ofpaintingone centralwall in adifferent con-trasting colour. The brighter the colour, themore expensive the paint, so go for mutedblue or green rather than sunshine yellow.Keep some of the paint and use it on a fewother touches in the room – a picture frame,a plastic wall clock, a shelf, a door frame. Youwill be amazed at the difference it makes.

A bit of greeneryBeg, borrow and steal a few plants from

friends or family, or buy plants on special atthe nursery. A few lavender bushes in a rowat the front of the house can change thewho-le feeling of the house. Indoor plants also canbe a nice focal point – paint the paint tin youused above in the same colour as thewall anduse as a planter.

Fabulous framesCheckout the frames indepartment stores,

and frame pictures yourself. Make a state-ment using a piece of brightly coloured paperas a backdrop. Empty frames in junk shopsalso go for next to nothing. Buy a few, paintthem, and stick photos or pretty black andwhite pictures or postcards in them straightagainst the wall for special effect. Wrappingpaper can also be beautiful in a frame.

Magic mugsYou can buy beautiful mugs for less than

R20 each. Ten mugs hung from hooks undera shelf can transform a drab kitchen.

You can either go for a splash of colour andvariety, or establish the colour scheme of yo-ur kitchen by choosing ten of the same.

Bathroom bluesStuck with a seventies bathroom and a

stained oldmetal bath? Redoing the lot couldcost thousands. Paint the tiles yourself. Goall white, so you don’t have to worry aboutthe grouting between the tiles.

Consider re-enamelling the tired old metalbath. It costs just over R1000, but can makethe bathroom seem like new.

A few bright towels, a painted wooden boxattached to thewall for storage, and a self-fra-med postcard or two, and there you go.

Oh, andditch thosemouldyold shower cur-tains.

Visit demolition yards and garage salesOkay, you need some imagination and will

have to do some work, but here you can findamazing stuff at a fraction of the cost.

Oregon pine doors and windows, old ba-throom and kitchen sinks, pretty taps, evenfurniture that can be painted or stripped canall be given a new lease on life.

Be brave and get down and dirty.

Readymade curtainsHaving curtains custom-made costs a for-

tune. Don’t go there. Department stores havevery reasonable ready-made lined curtainswith loops. Go for a neutral colour that fitsin with your colour schemewherever you go.Plain white will look as good against a bluewall as it will against grey or green or yellow.

Paint kitchen cupboardsNew kitchen cupboards cost an arm and a

leg. If you can’t afford the ones youwant, lovethe ones you have – a lick of paint can trans-form the dull, the old and the tired.

If you hate your kitchen counter tops, con-sider having them removed and replacedwith cement – and paint them.V Article from www.women24.com.

and we later discovered hecannot hear or talk.We found his insulin shot and

he recovered while everybodyhelped – from putting a towelover him to keep him warm, ajacket under his head, phoningfor assistance and taking him tohis destination since he did notwant to miss his bus backhome. We can be so proud of our

Get out of the house this Spring. and enjoy the natural beauty of the Table Bay reserve.

Treasures of Table BayExplore untouched trails in the Table Baynature reserve this spring. The City of CapeTown invites all Capetonians and tourists toundertake guided nature walks through thenature reserve to celebrate the arrival ofSpring. The walks are to take place from 14to 21 September at 10:30 each day.

During these guided walks, participantswill be able to explore normally inaccessibleparts of the City of Cape Town’s Table Bayreserve, which has been nominated as thereserve of the year for two consecutiveyears.Outdoor enthusiasts can look forwardto being guided by a top nature conservationspecialist, while being accompaniedthrough the southern area of the reserve.“This is yet another innovation in our questto ensure the sustainability of our reserves. We can, however, only achieve this with thesupport of members of the public,” says theCity’s mayco member for economic, envi-ronmental and spatial planning, Johan vander Merwe.

One of the reserve’s hidden gems is thetreasure chest of Cape Flats sand fynbos in-side the oldMilnerton racecourse, with over200 species in less than 20 ha of land. Many

of these species are in flower in September. This vegetation type is critically endan-gered and not normally accessible to thepublic. The rapidurbanisationofCapeTownhas transformed approximately 84% of theoriginal extent of this uniquely Cape Townvegetation type. Of the 16% that is left, theCity of CapeTownowns and activelymanag-es and conserves about 1.5%,with themajor-ity of the remainder being under privateownership.

Visitors might also be lucky enough tospot one of the resident Cape grysbokkies oreven the Cape clawless otter, water mon-goose, angulate tortoises, marsh terrapinsas well as numerous species of butterfliesand just over 100 species of birds.

Participants are asked to meet at the pub-lic open space right next to the road at thethird traffic circle on Grand National boule-vard inRoyalAscot,Milnerton, on themorn-ings of the walks. All children are welcome, but no pets will be permitted.

Booking is essential as there is limitedspace available. There is no cost involved.V For more enquiries or bookings, contact Landi Louwon [email protected] or on 021 444 7218.

Following its success in 2013, Blaauwbergnature reserve was again chosen as the siteof the Battle Up Blaauwberg Hill trail run.The run takes place on 14 September and ishostedby theFriendsofBlaauwbergConser-vation Area (FOBCA) in partnership withthe West Coast Athletics Club.

Events suchas these are avital componentof theCity’s efforts to ensure the sustainabil-ity of the nature reserves. This is the onlyrace where athletes (after choosing eitherthe 15 km or the 8 km route) are given theopportunity to run through the nature re-serve, enjoying beautiful views of TableMountain, Robben Island and Table Bay.

The race is organised in conjunction withthe FOBCAand the proceedswill go towardspromoting conservation of the 2 000 ha re-

serve, which is only 25 km from the CapeTown city centre and regarded as a globalbiodiversity hotspot.

“We are doing all thatwe can to ensure thefuture sustainability of our reserves, but weneed members of the public to support ourreserves. We will continue to focus on inno-vative ways to promote conservation man-agement,” says theCity’smaycomember foreconomic, environmental and spatial plan-ning, Johan van derMerwe. As this is a trailrun, therewill benomarshals along theway.A medic will be on duty at the start and fin-ish and a sweep will run with the last peopleon the trail. There will be only two waterpoints. Pre-registration is vital.V Visit www.blaauwberghilltrail.co.za for all the details and for the registration form.

Ticket sales for the inaugural CapeTown Fringe Festival have opened.Produced by the Grahamstown Na-

tional Arts Festival (NAF) team and sup-ported by the City of Cape Town and Stand-ard Bank, performances will take place inspecially devised theatre spaces includingthe iconic City Hall.A total of 89 productions have been con-

firmed as the core of the Fringe’s pro-gramme. The selected shows represent ablend of work that is “old and new, tried, tested, opportunistic, comfortable, famil-iar, edgy and daring,” according to NAF ar-tistic director Ismail Mahomed.

Focus on theatreMahomed says that the festival organis-

ers have selected a few more productionsthan they initially intended to. As theywere looking through the proposals, theyimmediately began mentally assigningthem to thevenues, thereby finding innova-tive ways to accommodate more shows.“Roughly half the productions selected aretheatre, while the rest are fairly evenlyspread across music, physical theatre, per-formance art, and comedy,” he says. From the outset, organisers had been

anxious to ensure that the Cape TownFringe gets established as a predominantlya theatre-orientated festival. He points out that there are already sev-

eral long-standing, successful single genrefestivals in Cape Town that cover comedyand jazz for example, and organisers werewary of replicating them.Among the productions to be staged are

a numberwhich recently drewaccolades inGrahamstown and which will be presentedin Cape Town for the first time, togetherwith some brand new work which will bepremiering at the new Fringe Festival. The idea was to present productions

which audiences are comfortable with, alongside some thatwould get tongueswag-ging.

Plethora of productionsForemost among those expected to raise

some eyebrows is rising star Gavin Kras-tin, whose groundbreaking piece #omnom-nom defies categorisation and takes audi-ences to new levels of discomfort. Therewill also be a number of productions – suchas Ameera Patel’s award-winning WhistleStop, Rob Murray’s Crazy in Love and Jem-ma Kahn in Amateur Hour! – which haveblown audiences away at other festivalsand form part of the Cape Town lineup. The closing weekend of the Fringe will

feature some big music shows in the CityHall, the details ofwhichwill be announcedsoon.V The inaugural Cape Town Fringe will run fromThursday 25 September until Saturday 5 October2014. For more information visit www.capetownfringe.co.za.

Powerful drivers at Power series

Marcel Angel will be looking to hold on to his domination in the V8 Masters during Round 7 of the Power Series at Killarney International Racewayon Saturday.

ADRIAN PHEIFFER

With top former European F3 driverSam Dejonghe on a fleeting visit tothe Cape for just one race, Satur-

day’s Mutlu Batteries Classic Car event atKillarney should be action-packed.The youngBelgian driver alreadyhad one

F3 championship victory to his name in thecurrent season, when he decided to switchto sports car racing. He will be at the wheelof his Dutch manager, Jan-Willem de laPorte’s powerful Chev CanAmV8 this week-end at the Power Series, which is sponsoredbyWingfieldMotors.Howeverhe is onlydueto arrive on Thursday which places him ata huge disadvantage against Bellville’sTrevor Momberg, who will be competing onhis home circuit in his super quick FordCapri. The Germanic dominance of the Midas

Clubman category sees a trio of Beemers inthe hands of the spectacular Danie vanNiekerk, Ebrahim Levy and Truspe Schoe-man up against reigning champion AndreJohnson (AudiA4).However some surprisesmaybe in store from the likes ofGolfer, ClintRennard who is currently hot property, orpossibly Brennan Green in a class X AudiA4.Behind them, the class B, BMW’s Gary

Mainwaring andMansoor Parkerwill be do-ing well if they can stay ahead of GavinCerff’s flying Golf. We are also well advisedto keep an eye onBrett Roach in the JiveGTiChallenge events. While he has always been

quick, this firebrand also acquired a humanwrecking ball status early in his career. However that seems to have been shelved oflate and his battle with Andrew Goslett andBessie Bester, as well as Nian du Toit (whostarts as the overall favourite) could be aclose one.The V8Masters and theMakita Supercars

are going to be back in action after their Na-mibian desert adventure last month. Thehead of the Supercar field is likely to be dis-puted between Nick Adcock and Table Viewstar Brad Wadeley, while Parow-based Ga-rethEasomandStuart Spooner are probablygoing to be the drivers to beat in the silverand bronze classes.

An excellent performance by veteran Pao-lo Cavalieri inWindhoek, where he finishedsecond to Marcel Angel, has seen himemerge as the dark horse in theMasters cat-egory.It is now going to be interesting to see

whether he can match up to guys like CraigJarvis and Charles Arton.

The Ballistics get a little silly during their visit on the Orange Couch.

The Ballistics blast offwith new tour and EPLOUISA STEYL

@lounotes

With a new album and a new name,The Ballistics have had a very busyyear.

When TygerBurger last spoke to theNorthern suburbs band, they had just re-leased their debut EP and were playing un-der the name Ballistic Blues.Last year the band were joint winners of

the Rolling Stone Rockstarter competition(sharing the title with Cortina Whiplash)which kicked open the doors to the SouthAf-rican music industry. Thanks to their involvement in the compe-

tition, they got to perform at Oppikoppi, toured Gauteng, were featured in the SouthAfrican edition of Rolling Stone magazineand, most importantly, got the opportunityto record their full-length album at VH Mu-sic and Publishing in Joostenbergvlakte.

Not just the bluesBallistic decided to change their name

slightly in order to steer clear of alienatingpotential new fans who might put them ina box before hearing them.“We started out as a solid blues band and

only played blues-orientated gigs,” explainslead guitarist, Tyan Odendal. But theirsoundhas evolved and the bandhave startedplaying music with other influences to newcrowds who weren’t necessarily into blues.“We’re not just blues anymore,” Tyan says.“We thought we’d broaden our horizons,”

adds bassist JP le Roux.Frontman, Nick Forbes, says the new al-

bum is a collection of their best work overthe past few years.

When it all comes togetherWhile their roots are still in blues, Nick

says Calling for the Crazy has elements ofpop and jazz, before hastily adding: “I thinkit’s full-on rock actually.”The band did some pre-production for the

albumwith Basson Laubscher before spend-ing 10 days in the VH studio recording thealbum.JP points out that you’d have to go to a

show or experience their music for yourselfto pinpoint their sound.“We are four different people and we have

different music influences and when it allcomes together it kind of makes somethingnew,” he says. The band are planning a newmusic video,

launching their music on on-line platformsand releasing of a new single over the nextfewmonths, all between touring throughoutSeptember. A coastal tour may be in thepipeline in December.“We want to get our album out to as many

people as possible, in as many places as pos-sible,” Tyan says.In the meantime, Capetonians can go to

their gig at Dizzy’s in Camps Bay on Fridayfrom 21:00. Tickets for the show cost R40 andwill be available at the door where you’ll al-so be able to pick up a copy of Calling forthe Crazy.V The Ballistics visited the Orange Couch to givereaders a taste of their new album. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch their performance and interview.

Milnerton Players will be hosting their nextsocial evening on Friday 5 September from20:00.This month’s entertainment will include

a guest performance by Vocal Unity, a choirmade up of mostly professional performersunder the direction of localmusician and en-tertainer, Jeremy Quickfall. Although stillin its infancy, this groupwill tackle any rep-ertoire that crosses its path, from FreddieMercury and Stephen Sondheim to KarlJenkins, Pentatonix and even LaurikaRauch.Quickfall is also the musical director for

the Players forthcoming musical produc-tion, The World Goes ‘Round, the songs ofKander & Ebb.The five talented singers whomake up the

cast of this fast moving revue will then per-form a few of the musical numbers as a fore-taste of the show.”The evening takes place at thePlayhouse’s

cosy redecorated foyer/café theatre with afully licenses bar and coffee bar. Chips andchocolates will also be available.

V Entrance costs R5 for members and R10 for nonmembers. No booking is required.
