Her boyfriend, on his way from his workplace at Eden on the Bay in Bloubergstrand, phoned the po- lice. Her father also contacted the police about the situation. As more police arrived they en- tered the house. Samsoodien was told to remain in her room. She could hear scuffling noises from her parents’ bedroom before a female police officer told her it was safe to come out of the room. “When I came out I saw that there were two handcuffed men standing in the living room. I was surprised at how well they were dressed. They didn’t look like robbers. The classification of a Vissers-hok oil refinery as a major haz-ardous institution has raised thequestion what impact this nowhas on the immediate environ-ment and nearby residents.

Residents in Table View have inthe past fingered FFS Refiners situ-ated in Frankdale Road, Vissers-hok, as thepossible originof the sul-phurous and bad odour thatplagued the area on certain eve-nings.

FFS Refiners produce a range offuels that are used in a variety of ap-plications which include baking, glass melting, billet heating, steam

raising, brick making, asphalt heat-ing, power plant start-up and auxil-iary power plant primary fuel.

The notice of FFS Refiners beingclassified as a major hazardous in-stitution was published in a localnewspaper two weeks ago.

According to FFS Refiners’ envi-ronmental manager Alison Hay-cock the company has always beenclassified as a major hazardous in-stallation in terms of the Major Haz-ardous Installation (MHI) regula-tions GNR 692 under the Occupa-tional Health and Safety Act.

She said the notice in the paperis part of the legal requirement interms of the MHI regulations.

The refinery is considered anMHI due to the quantity of flamma-

ble oil stored on site she said.Haycock said they are continu-

ously monitoring the emissionsthat the refinery releases into theair.

“Point source emissions aremeasuredannually andambient airis monitored six monthly as re-quired in terms of the National En-vironmental Management AirQuality Act and our permit/RODconditions,” she explained, addingthat company employees undergooccupational health risk assess-ments on an annual basis as pre-scribed by the hazardous chemicalsubstances regulations.

Lungiswa James, mayoral com-mittee member for health, con-firmed that FSS Refiners currently

operate within the emissionsframework allowed by the City ofCape Town’s health regulations.

“The closest ambient air qualitymonitoring stations to the FFS re-finery are the two situated in TableView and Bothasig. Both of thesestations currently show no exceed-ing of the measured pollutants. Inaddition, the FFS refinery current-ly meets their Atmospheric Emis-sion Licence conditions,” Jamessaid.

According to him a full ambientair quality monitoring station wasalso established by the ProvincialGovernment of the Western Cape inMorningstar (Vissershok) in coop-eration with the city’s air qualitymanagement unit.

“This monitoring station was lo-cated downwind of the FFS Refin-ery and Vissershok Landfill Site tomonitor air quality impacts on theclosest residents to this hub, name-ly Morningstar.

“The results from this monitor-ing station suggest that the ambientair quality found in this communityis well within the South AfricanAmbient Air quality Standards,”James said.

He added that when complaints ofthis nature are investigated, factorssuch as wind direction, wind speed, atmospheric stability, the type andstrength of the odour, and individu-al sensitivity all play a role.

Complaints can be reported tocity health on 021 590 1419.

. From page 1.Police confiscated jewellery belonging to

Samsoodien’s mother from the two suspects. At the station more stolen jewellery was foundhidden in their shoes.

Police arrested two more suspects who werewaiting outside in a 4x4 double cab bakkie.

The robbers gained access to the yard by lift-ing the motorised motor gate off its rail witha crowbar. The same crowbar was used tobreak the frame of the security gate off theframe of the living room door.

“My room was trashed. They went througheverything, even my underwear. I still can’tsleep there,” says Samsoodien’s mother Saki-na. She is very grateful that the situationplayed out the way it did.

“It could have been much worse. We couldhave been burying my daughter or she couldhave been raped,” she says.

The whole family has been traumatised bythe incident. “Everyone looks suspiciousnow,” says Samsoodien adding that she cannotstay home alone any more.

Police arrested three Tanzanians (two ofthem 30 and a 17-year-old), and a 32-year-oldMalawian who all reside in Du Noon.

They appeared in the Cape Magistrate’sCourt. The case has been postponed to 7 Juneand the suspects remain in police custody.

Family traumaafter robbery

Police are urgently looking for informa-tion about an incident where a Park-lands woman was savagely attackedsome two weeks ago.

On Thursday 3 May at 16:00 a youngwoman, in her 20s was assaulted on herway to her boyfriend’s home in Sun-ningdale. The woman had got off a MyCi-Ti bus and was walking walking towardsSt Anne’s Road, Sunningdale.

The road is adjacent to a green belt

with a water canal running through it.As she reached the canal, her assailant

pushed her from behind. She fell and hither head against the concrete.

A mother from Boston is hoping to be-come the first-ever South African Strong-woman when the first-ever competitionof this kind kicks off in September.

Liesl Schoonraad (41) is no stranger whenit comes to setting tough goals for herself andputting in hours of hard training to achievethem.TygerBurger has in the past reported on

Schoonraad after she swam from Robben Is-land to Bloubergstrand, became the firstwoman in South Africa to pull a 10-tonnetruck and became the first woman in theworld to pull a Dakota aircraft in Decemberlast year.

This last challenge saw her tear her Achil-les tendon which required surgery.

These three challenges were done to createawareness around and support for those suf-fering from cerebral palsy. Her subsequentcommitment to strength sports and how itcan help to motivate children to “standstrong” even when times are difficult, hasseen Schoonraad start the Strong4Charityorganisation.

This year she will be involved in severaldemonstrations of strength events and moti-vational talks aimed at encouraging peopleto empower themselves on a physical, men-tal and emotional level.

“It has been wonderful to have the supportfor combining the sport with charity and mo-tivational events from a few of the world’s

best strongmen like Terry Hollands, MarkFelix and Derek Poundstone as well as re-ceiving huge support from my friend WWE’sThe Big Show,” Schoonraad says.

Apart from the charity work she has alsobeen instrumental in establishing an officialSouth African Strongwoman competition.

“Four weeks after surgery I was back ingym training upper body, crutches, moon-boot and all. My rehab started on week sixfor another six weeks and gym training isnow back in full swing. I am taking it easyon the Achilles and have learnt to listen tomy body. I know when to push and when togive it a break,” she says about her training.

On 1 and 2 September Schoonraad will betravelling to Johannesburg to take part inSouth Africa’s very first competition forStrongwoman. The South African Strong-man Competition will take place in the sametime at Gold Reef City.

“I am so excited at the fact that the sportis growing to the level where competitionsare going to be held for women. It would bea dream come true to win this competitionand become South Africa’s Strongest Wom-an, but to do that there lies three months ofgruelling training ahead,” she says.

Strongman/woman competition is not abig sport in Cape Town, so technique train-ing for events in itself will be a challenge.

“I am blessed to have the support fromthree super strongmen from Cape Town,Herman Steyn, Moh Yahyah and ShaneMaree,” says Schoonraad who is also a mem-ber of the South African Strongman Union.

“The support from the chairmanandmem-bers has been incredible. On 31 March and1 April I supported the Strongman Nationalsin Durban and it was a truly incredibleevent. All the athletes showed true sport-manship and the support amongst the guysis incredible.”

Visit www.strong4charity.co.za or contactLiesl at [email protected].

Aiming to be the strongest

Liesl Schoonraad managed to pull a Dakota aircraft in December. She tore her Achilles tendonon her second attempt after pulling the aircraft five metres.

It really is astonishing how littlehas been said and written in thiscountry about the most remarkableSouth African or our time – ElonMusk. He hails from Pretoria but henow lives in America where his ex-ploits are the stuff of legends.

He made his first fortune develop-ing ZIP 2 software for the publish-ing industry before going on tomake his second fortune as a co-founder of Paypal. When Paypalwas sold for about R12 billion he puthis share of the money into threecompanies. The “bread and butter”business is SolarCity which installssolar panels on roofs in California.

Then there is Tesla Motors whichhas developed and manufactures

electric cars that perform like Fer-raris. Both Mercedes and Toyotahave been so impressed that theyhave bought stakes in the company.

His sports car has sold to A-listHollywood stars and in July hisModel S will be launched followedby an electric SUV. The prototypehas already generated rave re-views. Musk has been described asthe most innovative figure in themotor industry since Henry Ford.

His third company is the most ex-citing of all. He designs and manu-factures rockets and spacecraft andhas just delivered a load of cargo tothe international space station.

SpaceX is not the only privatecompany in the space race but it is

quite unique. Others started byadapting inter-continental ballisticmissiles which had past their sell-by dates to launch satellites. Hestarted by designing a completelynew liquid-fuelled rocket, or rathera whole family of rockets. His boastis that he will launch satellites fora fraction of the cost charged by oth-ers in the field.

He has put several satellites intoorbit and leapt ahead of the compe-tition (that includes companies likeBoeing) by launching his Dragonspace capsule into orbit, separatingit from its rocket and bringing itback to earth in a perfect mission. He has now followed this up by de-livering a cargo to the space station.

And this is just thebeginning. His Drag-on capsule is designedto carry seven astro-nauts (the Russiancapsule carries justthree) and when itcomes back to earth itwill land on its ownrocket power, like thelunar lander.

Not surprisinglyhis company is beingcontracted for enoughsatellite launches tokeep it busy for a decade. NASA hasa $1.6 billion contract with SpaceXto resupply the space station.

And he has achieved all this by

the age of 40!But it’s just the

start. His ambition isto put men on Mars, build a greenhousethere and bring life tothe dead planet. Atthe present rate ofprogress he willprobably do it all be-fore any governmentcan.

So in just 10 yearshe has conqueredspace and shaken up

the whole motor industry – roughlytwo life-times of achievementsqueezed into a single decade. Notbad for a young man from Pretoria.

The young man from Pretoria who is shaking up America

Twenty-four pets from DuNoon were sterilised at the re-cent spay-a-thon marathon ofCitivet in Monte Vista, ofwhich 20 were collected fromthe township by AfricanTails.

Over and above the free steri-lisation, all the animals wenthome with a blanket, a bag offood and a fancy dog collar.

They were also de-wormedand had tick and flea treatment.

Citivet would like to thank allwho participated in making thisday a huge success and to theirsuppliers who made very gener-ous donations.

There are many benefits tohaving pets sterilised.

An unsterilised female dogand her unsterilised offspringcan produce 67 000 puppies insix years and an unsterilised fe-male cat and her offspring canproduce 370 000 kittens in sevenyears!

One’s pet will, of course, re-tain its individual personalityafter the sterilisation. The onlycharacter change resultingfrom sterilising is that one’s petmight “calm down” a little.

There is no benefit in lettingone’s pet have a litter before itis spayed, since it is actually bet-ter for her not to have a litter ora period of being on heat beforebeing spayed.

Think carefully before letting

one’s female pet have a litter, asone is responsible for keepingthe offspring until one finds re-sponsible owners for them.

Spaying also eliminates uter-ine infection and reduces therisk of mammary cancer, while

neutering prevents testicularand prostate cancer. In additionto the health benefits, one’s petwon’t face the danger of being infights, run over or exposed todiseases while on the prowl insearch of a mate.

Thanks, as spayathon a big success

Veterinarian Dr Aletta Mulder from Citivet MonteVista sterilises a pet from Du Noon.

Dr Peter Van der Merwe is here hard at work while nursing assistant, Christo Koetzee, stands by.

A local football club hasstrengthened its effort to devel-op the sport in a nearby informalsettlement with the donation ofequipment and kit.

The Table View Football Club(TVFC) last week handed over jer-seys, pants, socks and soccer ballsto the Sophakame Primary Schoolin Du Noon.

Despite having some 1 000 learn-ers the school only has three teams:u-11, u-13 and u-14 – playing in thelocal school league.

The school’s deputy principaland sports co-ordinator Amos Si-wayi says the lack of coaches, facili-ties and kit prevents the schoolfrom fielding more teams.

“We have a lot of kids that showup at training at the beginning ofthe season but unfortunately wecan’t absorb all of them,” he says.

This does however mean that theplayers included in these teams arethe best of the best, he adds.

He says those who do not makethe cut for the school are urged totry out for teams competing in the

Local Football Association (LFA).The Du Noon LFA which falls un-

der the South African Football As-sociation Cape Town includes clubsin areas like Du Noon, Joe Slovoand Phoenix competing againsteach.

The TVFC currently has some 30juniors players from u-11 to u-17playing for the club.

The club’s development pro-gramme which has been runningfor the last six years has alreadyproved hugely beneficial to someplayers from Du Noon.

One such player is Bonga Dladlawho represented the club at u-11 fortwo seasons.

Dladla was subsequently scoutedby Ajax Cape Town and is now partof their junior set up.

“That boy has great skills. That iswhat we want to do – have the play-ers play for the club and then getthem seen by the big clubs likeAjax,” Tim Hayward junior co-chairman of TVFC says.

The club is intent on creatingsimilar opportunities for otherplayers like Dladla.

“In 2013 we want to work withAmos to attract top school players

to play for Table View and so exposethem to professional coaches,” Hay-ward says.

Du Noon currently has two sport-fields which the different soccerteams not only have to share amongthemselves but also with othersporting codes like rugby.

“The fields are not very level andare difficult to train on,” Siwayisays.

Aspart of its partnershipwith theschool Hayward agreed that theschool teams could train on theTVFC fields ahead of big matchesand before regional and provincialtryouts.

Siwayi was very thankful for thedonations from the club.

“With this training kit, they canlook the same. It looks nice and willalso motivate the kids to come totraining,” he said adding that theplayers’ lack of boots is also a bigproblem.

“The kids play with bare feet. Itis a problem when they train withbare feet and then in matches whenthey play with borrowed boots theycan’t perform.”

The TVFC will be running a soc-cer boots drive during June.

A Catholic priest dressed in aleather waistcoat, getting off amotorcycle at a local motorbikerally, is an unusual sight.

However unusual this may be,this is exactly what one can expectwhen Father Bogdan Buksa of theBellville Catholic Church isaround.

Father Bogdan successfully com-bines his love for the Lord with hispassion – motorcycling. The resultis a unique ministry on two wheels,

aptly called the Knights of St Chris-topher (St Christopher is the patronof travellers).

Knights of St Christopher is anassociation for all Christian ridersthrough which the word of God isspread to people by evangelism.“The ministry is an initiative of theCatholic Archdiocese of CapeTown, but transcendsacross all par-ishes,” says Father Bogdan.

The newly established motorcy-cle ministry was inaugurated at aspecial mass, marking the officialcommencement earlier in May. Theministry’s mission is to establish a

non-profit, inter-denominationalChristian organisation, with dedi-cated Christian riders of any Chris-tian denomination who share a loveof the Lord and a willingness tospread His gospel.

“The ministry will serve the poorwhere there is a need and be a voicefor those who cannot speak forthemselves,” said Father Bogdan.

Archbishop Stephen Brislin isthe official patron of the ministry.

Father Bogdan started riding his1 500cc Kawasaki Vulcan last yearand shortly after he took up his newhobby, found out there was no bik-

ing association for Catholic bikers. He realised many Catholic motor-cycle lovers went to other motorcy-cle ministries. Soon thereafter themotorcycle ministry was estab-lished.

“If you have two wheels, a desireto minister to others and have funat the same time, you have to jointhis exciting ministry,” said FatherBogdan.

Their motto “He died for me, Iwill ride for Him,” sums up their at-titude towards their love for Christand passion for hogs.

Since the inception of the Knights

of St Christopher, the membershave been busy. They adopted theDon Bosco Educare Centre in Delftas their charity project for the year;have been on a blanket run for theneedy, attended two motorcycle ral-lies and are organising a huge BibleRun, in association with the BibleSociety of the Western Cape, in or-der to raise funds for Bible distribu-tion to the underprivileged.

Every last Saturday of the montha bikers’ mass (service) will be heldat Our Lady of Fatima CatholicChurch in Rhos Street in Bellvilleat 17:00, starting Saturday 30 June.

BBC Food’s flamboyantly delight-ful Reza Mahammad visited Hir-sch’s Milnerton branch last Tues-day to work his magic.

Says Hirsch PRO, Nardo van Eck:“Excited guests started arriving asearly as 17:00 to ensure a front rowseat for Reza’s cooking demonstra-tion which started at 18:00. Reza ar-rived in a stretched white limou-sine along with Ashraf Jeena, man-aging director for ELBA, andChristine Cashmore, director forthe Good Food and Wine Show, andwas met by Hirsch’s chief opera-tions executive, Margaret Hirsch.”

Reza prepared two recipes fromhis new cookbook, “Reza’s IndianSpice – Eastern Recipes for Western

Cooks”. First he prepared chickenin a coriander paste, which boastswith coriander, green chillies, cash-ewnuts andcoconutmilk. Laughterfilled the air as he explained the dif-ference between coconut cream andcoconutmilk, andhowSouthAfricawas the only country that sold themboth in a tin.

He also discussed the history ofchillies and how they came to influ-ence eastern cooking to the extentit has since the 16th centurythrough the spice trade.

“But if it doesn’t burn, it’s notnice,” said Ramola Makan fromElba, who was Reza’s assistant forthe evening.

Next Reza prepared a smoked au-

bergine raita with sesame seedsand showed how easily an auber-gine can be smoked on an openflame on the ELBA gas cooker. Healso explained the advantages of us-ing yoghurt while cooking and itsgreat characteristics as a thicken-ing agent.

Dishes prepared were served onplatters and guests were given theopportunity to taste Reza’s deli-cious creations. After the cookingsession, Reza signed copies of hisnew cookbook, which is on sale atHirsch’s Milnerton.

My vrou het diehele troue arranged!”

Die joernalis van TygerBurger bars uitvan die lag en sê: “Ek gaan dit as my inlei-dingsparagraaf gebruik!”

Die komediant antwoord: “Nee man! Diseen van my beste jokes!”

Give HomeAffairs duePeople are always talkingbadaboutHomeAffairs. Well, I just want you to congratu-late theBellville branch for excellent serv-ice.

My parents visited them to apply forpassports as they are planning to visittheir first-born grandchild in Taiwan lat-er in this year.

They applied for their passports on 17April and thought they would probablyhave to wait at least six weeks to receivethem, but they actually received an SMSon 30 April to inform them they are fin-ished. They went to fetch them on 3 May.

This is certainly a positive to take for-ward in South Africa. This department isnot so pathetic after all. If you see somegood service, please don’t forget to smileand appreciate it. Too many people aremiserable and blind and only see the badside of things. Maybe we can have a spacein thenewspaperwherepeople canbe con-gratulated on good service in the future?

Hats off as wearrive home safeThe death toll on the Western Cape’s roadshas been described as “a massive improve-ment” in comparison with last year’s sta-tistics.

Transport and public works ministerRobin Carlisle recently released the fatali-ty statistics for 2012 up until April.

A total of 107 deaths were recorded forApril, five more than the same period lastyear. However this time around, Aprilcontained two long weekends instead ofthe one of last year.

This year’s fatality figures are the low-est they have been over the last five years.

Every year since 2008 a drop has beenexperienced in comparison with the previ-ous year.

Between January and April in 2008, 562deaths were recorded, in 2009 this numberwas 537, in 2010 it was 502 and last year487 were recorded.

Hats off to Carlisle, the driver of theprovince’s Safely Home campaign, as itseems the campaign has the desired effect.

Last October Carlisle announced thatbehavioural changes were brought aboutby this campaign.

This campaign has resulted in the sav-ing of no fewer than 773 lives!

The campaign is aimed at reducing thenumber of fatalities by 50 percent by theend of 2014.

It seems very possible that this might bereached, as theprogrammehas led to a 27,6percent reduction in just under threeyears.

‘n jong dame by wie ek ‘n stelletjie gekoophet.

Baie dankie.

It has been such an eye-opener for me andmany other mothers and grandmotherswho wait in the parking area of Park WestShopping Centre in Parklands, to pick upscholars at CBC St John’s, to see the bla-tant activities of the drug pushers, deal-ers, and on occasion, the “big guns” arriv-ing to pick up cash or deliver more drugs. It has also been really sad to see whocomes to buy the drugs there.

Thank you, so much, Table View Policefor cleaning out that whole area and forarresting the foreigners who come to ourbeautiful country with their disgustingmoney-making antics, and bring areasdown with their drug dealing, hiding thedrugs in the sand or behind bushes andaccosting students as they go to the near-

by shop for sweets or cooldrinks. As an undercover grandmother, I have

been able to identify the drug dealers andinform the police of where drugs werehidden.

Most of all, I have been able to sit in mycar and pray that God would removethese people and the evil that they consid-er as their daily jobs.

I have also been able to reclaim, through prayer, that ground for whichGod intended it to be used.

Stay relevant in theworkplaceCelebrities, artists and politicians do itregularly. They change their hair, have acomplete make over, or, if they have thepublic clout, launch a new range ofunderwear like David Beckham recentlydid. Companies do it too: they re-brand orre-package their offerings, introduce so-called new improved products and carmanufacturers tweak their cars a little hereand there to launch new models.

All of this to remain in the public eye andactive in the marketplace. And so shouldyou and I spend some time, money andeffort on staying relevant in the workplacefor as long as we wish or need to, saysNatalie Rabson of Boston City Campus andBusiness College.

“Staying relevant goes beyond age andexperience,” she points out. “It's aboutstaying up to date and continuing to fit innicely, updating skills where appropriate,no matter what and how often thingschange in the world of work.”

Each one of us is unique and our personaland work circumstances differ, but thereare some universal truths to guide youalong the way, such as:

Appearances matter – there is no way outof this one. We need to stay current withour dress and overall look. While somemay be critical of this kind of thinking, wedo need to update not only our clothes; weneed to carry the look in totality and thisincludes updating our grooming, shoes, hairstyle, make-up, facial hair andaccessories such as handbags andjewellery. Of course there are classic itemsthat don't date, but the trick is to make it alllook 'fresh'.

Most of us deal with customers and all ofus will have colleagues – we need torepresent our companies in a respectfuland up-to-date way. Note that looking freshincludes looking healthy and adopting anenergetic and enthusiastic attitude. “Youcan arrive at work looking like a milliondollars and ruin the positive impression byspending the whole day sighing, moaningand walking with slumped shoulders,”Rabson cautions. “It clearly takes aconscious effort to look fresh and act fresh;young people sometimes look as thoughthey carry years of unhappiness andtiredness in their bones while more mature

Vandag is dit steeds ’n prosedurewat vrees inboesem, hoofsaaklik as gevolgvan onkunde.

Geheueverlies is ’n algemene newe-effekvan EKB.

Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) students will com-pete in an international Formula 1 student competition during Julyin the United Kingdom.

The university competed in the 2012 Formula Student Competition andthe team’s expectations were exceeded when their Formula 1 car scoredfull marks.

This group is the only one from South Africa that has managed to clincha place in this year’s competition.

This car was put through its final paces at the Killarney Race Trackand is now ready to be shipped off to Silverstone in the United Kingdom.

This is the first time CPUT will compete in the 2012 Formula Studentcompetition, and to top it all off, CPUT is the only South African universityto secure a place in this year’s competition.

Mechanical engineering lecturer Eugene Erfort says students will haveto compete in a number of events, including a 22km endurance race.

He says the final test focused on how the car would perform during thisendurance race as well as its fuel consumption.

“We are very pleased with the results,” he says. And with the car meeting all requirements, lecturer Felicity Harris says

the team will spend the next few days preparing the car for freighting.. The Cape Speed, Show and Shine car show will be held on 2 June. This family-friendly car show, which will take place at the Bellville cam-

pus, is a fundraising event for the students who will travel to the UK inJuly. The show will give car enthusiasts an opportunity to show off theirwares, from vintage to show cars.

Organiser, Dean Jacobs, says vintage to show cars will be on display. For more information on the event contact [email protected] or DeanJacobs on 072 664 1886.

Robin Carlisle, the Minister for Trans-port and Public Works in the WesternCape, has released the road fatality sta-tistics for this year up until the end ofApril.

“Although the total number of deaths onour roads over April 2012 was 107, fivedeaths more than the previous year’s 102,this time around the month contained twolong weekends, instead of the usual one,”Carlisle said.

“While slightly more drivers, motorcy-clists, passengers and pedestrians werekilled this year, forensic pathology statis-tics show that this year, for the first timesince 2008, not a single cyclist died.

“The 104 deaths on our roads in Januaryshowed a slight drop on last year’s 109, al-though February (99) and March (92) thisyear recorded almost unheard of numbers– below the 100 mark.

“Last year’s February death toll was 129,while 147 lives were lost in March last year,’said Carlisle.

“What these numbers tell us is that whilefatalities are dropping overall, holiday peri-ods remain the most dangerous times of theyear to be on the roads.”

Carlisle called the overall 2012 tally of 402for the four months January to April “amassive improvement on last year’s 487,2010’s 502, 2009’s 537 and 2008’s 562”.

On 6 October last year Carlisle an-nounced that behavioural changes broughtabout by the Safely Home Campaign had re-sulted in the saving of the lives of 773 men, women and children.

Carlisle said he anticipates that the West-ern Cape will be passing the “1 000 livessaved mark” in the next few weeks.

“I would like to acknowledge the increas-ing number of motorists who are driving re-sponsibly and doing their bit to get every-one safely home,” he said.

“However, I believe the numbers of peo-ple dying on our roads is still far too highand I believe the time has come to start pu-blicly exposing these dangerous drivers,”Carlisle said.

“They might not think that they are beingwatched, but members of the public are res-ponding to our call to come forward withthe identities of drivers that they see endan-gering the lives of the innocents on our ro-ads.”

With two music videos, a newsingle and a tour on the way, theJesse Jordan Band is “Ready forthe world”.

The band released their album,Ready for the World, in January thisyear at Die Boer, and will soon bereleasing their second single off thealbum, “Galaxy Boulevard”, alongwith music videos for the title trackand the new single.

The Jesse Jordan Band has beenin existence for about 11 years.

The current line-up of Jesse Jor-dan as frontman on lead vocals andacoustic guitar, Hein Schultz onlead guitar and backing vocals, JPCrouch on drums and Logan Scotton bass, has been together for aboutfour years.

They went through a quiet patchwhen they changed management, but since working with Van Plati-num Artist Management, they havebeen going full-steam ahead.

Jesse says the name of the bandstarted that way because it was go-ing to be just a solo project.

The name became a brand andwas left as is.

All the band members have theprivilege of being full-time musi-cians, but this means that they have

to have projects on the side.“In Cape Town it’s difficult to sus-

tain yourself in one band if you arenot a top world touring band,” JPsays, before adding: “That’s wherewe are heading.”

In July, the band will be headingout on a short tour with Raoul andthe Black Fridays. They are plan-ning a bigger tour for summer.

A project the band is excitedabout is the Sunshine Project.“‘Sunshine’ is a song I wrote for mygran who passed away last year,”Jesse says.

JP explains that the song is aboutwhat grandmothers mean to every-one. “That’s the message behind thesong,” he says.

For the Sunshine Project, theband is asking fans to send picturesof themselves with their grand-mothers to [email protected].

. The Jesse Jordan Band will beperforming on Saturday at High-lander Sports Bar in Brackenfelland at the Rock 44 festival.

GARY VAN DYK

The joy of jazz is taking a youngmusician to making musicalmagic across the world.

When 22-year-old guitaristMark Williams steps onto the Art-scape stage as part of the annualYouth Jazz Festival on Saturday,it’s all part of a journey that start-ed in Mitchells Plain, and contin-ues to prestigious festivals in thiscountry and across the world.

This journey has also empow-ered this young man to rise aboverampant temptations of crime andgangsterism, and he is now an in-spiration to other youngsters inhis community.

While he confesses that he couldplay the basics since he was nine, the jazz bug started biting when

he heard about some of the risingyoung players on the scene.

“There were young cats likeJonathan Rubain, Julius May andothers who were not much olderthan me, but they could play someincredible music.

“Through them I started to lis-ten to the older generation of play-ers like Jimmy Dludlu and AlvinDyers, and the international leg-ends like Pat Metheny, GeorgeBenson, getting into the music ofMiles Davis and John Coltraneand knew that this is what I want-ed from music in my life,” he said.

It was only after leaving highschool that he really got into theserious side of things when hejoined the Cape Music Instituterun by Camillo Lombard and EzraDelport in 2007.

“This was an exciting time for

me as I completed a two-yearcourse with training in music the-ory, songwriting, music business, stage performance, band ethics, life skills, industrial communica-tion, arranging, composing andmusic production.

“It was also here that I realisedthat hard work has its rewardswhen I was chosen to representthe Cape Music Institute at theNorwegian Music Academy inOslo in 2009 – I attended some mu-sic theory clinics and jazz work-shops. Thus far it is the only for-mal training I’ve received and I’mstill striving to learn all there isto learn about life and music,” hesaid.

Williams pointed out that Lom-bard and Delport still play a majorrole in his life.

“These two wonderful mentors

have been extremely influentialin many of my achievements andeven my most recent success suchas being awarded an online schol-arship to study through BerkleeCollege of Music.

“On Saturday it will be the sec-ond time that I am featured on thisfestival and I am looking forwardto performing with the wonderfulDelft Big Band again.

“You just have to look at thisband to see how music can em-power youth from disadvantagedcommunities. We need moreprojects like this to fight the temp-tations of crime and gangsterismin our communities.”

The Artscape Youth Jazz Festi-val takes place at the ArtscapeTheatre on Saturday starting at19:30. Tickets cost R80 and areavailable from Computicket.

’n Eerste oorwinning ontwykTygerberg steeds hierdie sei-soen.

Sensei Dewaldt du Preez un-derwent a rigorous fitnesstest, bag- and pad-work, spar-ring, combat application and awritten exam to grade to hisfifth degree black belt.

The Brackenfell resident re-ceived this honour fromGrand Master Eddie Cave, atenthdegreeblackbelt. “Itwastough, but worth it, as I not on-ly do it for myself but for mystudents. My road in martialarts started 15 years ago under

Eddie Cave and I was fortuna-te enough to have him as mymentor – his dedication andunderstanding of martial artsis superior.”

Cave is the former SA presi-dent of the World Associationof Kickboxing Organisationand founder of SA Karate Kaiwith 60 years’ martial arts ex-perience behind him.

“I competed professionallyin full-contact fighting for fiveyears. My focus now is on im-

proving my own skills for thesake of my students and myclub, Core Martial Arts Acade-my. We host healthy lifestyleevenings where we do basicmedicals, discuss healthy ea-ting and training, thus crea-ting a healthy lifestyle,” saidDu Preez.

He trains in many stylessuch as boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, grappling, goju ryuand close combat includingstick, knife and pistol.

- (Sarel Burger)
