Marnette Meyer says her 11-year- old Italian greyhound was still play- ing carefree on 28 September the day before she died. “There was no sign that she was sick. Nicky crept under our bed cov- ers at around 21:00 and suddenly gave a jerk. We thought she was dreaming. I rushed to her, but she seemed fine,” Marnette said. The next morning she was awok- en by a terrible sound. “I woke up at 04:30 with Nicky crying something terrible in my arms. Then she just gave a couple of shudders and died.” Marnette thought the dog’s death was due to a heart attack given her age. Fortunately they still had Lala and Reepel Steel, both offspring from Lala. On 6 October Marnette who was in the hospital at the time got a phone call from her husband saying that Reepel Steel had the same symptoms as those displayed by Nicky. He rushed her to the vet. “The vet said she had a fit and prescribed medication, which we gave her every day.” A week later she too passed away. “It was the Saturday evening, we were getting ready to eat when Reepel suddenly fainted. In shock I gave her to my husband to massage her heart but to no avail. That is when we realised something was very wrong,” Marnette said. A pathology report confirmed that Reepel Steel had died because of severe internal haemorrhage brought on by the consumption of rat poison. Marnette confirms that they nev- er put out rat poison because of their dogs. “How do you prevent this and who can be so cruel?” she asked. After asking around Marnette heard that a nearby neighbour’s dog had also died at that same time. Mark Simon’s nine-year-old Staffie, Winston died about two weeks ago. “We discovered him late after- noon on the Sunday shaking and foaming at the mouth. We tried to get him to drink some water. The next morning we took him to the vet and they said he is suffering and we should put him down,” Simon said. A Sanddrift man apparently managed tosuccessfully create a very rare type of hy-brid dagga andwas arrested for his efforts.
Milnerton police arrested him last weekThursday morning when they found R500 000worth of dagga being cultivated in his house.
It is believedat this stage that the 41-year-oldsuspect was supplying dealerswith bags of thepotent drug,which is a hybrid of Brazilian andIndian dagga.
Plenty of specialised growing equipmentwas also confiscated according to W/ODaphne Dell, the spokesperson for theMilner-ton police.
This equipment, as well as the precisemeth-od of growing hybrid dagga, are freely availa-ble on the internet.
Dell elaborates: “One of our officers, ConstFaizel Storah, has made plenty of dagga-relat-ed arrests and he says that this is the first timehe has ever come across this type of cannabis.He recently searched someone and he saysthat if the person didn’t tell him that the sub-stance he discovered was dagga then hewouldn’t have known what it was.”
The successful arrest of the suspect hascome after the police received a tip-off from amember of the public.
They acted quickly and stormed into hishouse at 02:00. They found him in his room,heavily intoxicated and smoking dagga.
“The members saw two rooms were beingused as an ‘indoor plantation’. In the suspect’sbedroom there were also plenty of pre-packedbags.
The equipment is worth between R30 000and R50 000,” Dell says.
It was carefully constructed and set to mim-ic sunrise and sunset, while the temperaturewas a constant 24,6 °C.
The hybrid dagga, which Dell calls “hydro”needs no soil to grow in, and instead relies onlarge beads as “soil” and the potplants are al-ways filled with water.
Another type of dagga, namely “white wid-ow”, was apparently also being cultivated inhis house.
“The hydro is almost as expensive as tik,which costs R120 a gram. It is 20 times moreexpensive than the dagga known as “Cheese”(Durban Poison).
Besides the adult trees andbags of dagga, thepolice also confiscated extractor fans, hoists,lead lights, and other equipment.
After the court case the cannabiswill be tak-en to the Plattekloof Forensic Lab for analysisand then be destroyed.

Local vetDorothyBreedwho treatedMar-nette’s dogs confirm that there is somethingstrange going on.
“It is difficult to say whether there issomeone who is poisoning dogs but thereare dogs that have recently suddenly died,”she said, mentioning another dog in VanRiebeeckstrand who survived poisoning.
“It was however a different type of poison
that dog consumed,” she said.Breed said the symptoms of Marnette’s
dogs are characteristic of the newer genera-tion of rat poisons.
“These poisons stay in the system for along time and can take between two to four
weeks for symptoms to show. Usually thepoisons that are used to kill dogs are quickworking and attack the nervous system.The poison of which the dogs died howevercause excessive internal bleeding whichthen leads to death,” she explained.
She said it is difficult to establish a pat-tern of poisoning incidents as most peoplethink the dogs die of a heart attack and burythem in thebackyardwithout examination.

Just because a woman has given life to chil-dren, it doesn’t mean her dreams of havinga nicely toned body need to die in the process.
This is a concept that Sonja vanRooyen (36)of Parklands wants to bring home to the mul-titude of mothers who have given up on re-gaining their pre-mommy physique.
Sonja is a mother of two girls and holdsdown a demanding job as a systems analystat a leading cellular company. And she re-centlywonanational competition for thebesttoned body – against women much youngerthan herself.
“I thought if you had children, then that’s
it; goodbye body. Many women think that, butit is not the case. As a mother you can actuallylook good, feel good about yourself and lead anactive and healthy lifestyle,” says Sonja.
The petite blond standing a mere 1,6 m andtipping the scale at 58 kg of which most is well-toned, lean muscle, started going to the gymthree years ago.
“I wasn’t out of shape before my eldestdaughter, Amy’s birth, I was average. Iweighed 80 kg at her birth and managed to lose15 kg of that, but I had postnatal depression,which back then wasn’t as well-known. I justthought that I needed to pull myself together,”she says.
When her second child was born some five
years later she again had depression butthis time the symptoms were much worse.
“I was prescribed anti-depressants but didnot like the way it made me feel. I went to ahomeopath who prescribed some naturalmedication and he suggested I start exercis-ing as the serotonin (released by the bodywhen one exercises) will also help my condi-tion.”
“I decided to go to the gym and after aboutthree weeks I was 100 %,” she said.
Four months later she competed in her firstfitness competition – the IFBB USN CapeClassic – and came third in the bikini divi-sion.
“I weighed between 48 kg and 49 kg and had9 % body fat. My trainer said I was too skinnyand needed more muscle to burn fat. He saidI needed to pick up nine kilogrammes of mus-cle. I just laughed at him, but I gained the ex-tra muscle mass through clean eating,” shesays.
Her most recent achievement is winningthe tone figure division at the National Ama-teurBodyBuildingAssociation’s (Nabba)Na-tional Championships in Durban on 13 Octo-ber.
Sonja won both her class – the under-1,63 m– and the overall competition which includedcompetitors in the over-1,63 m class as well.
She will now be representing South Africaat the Nabba Mr and Miss Universe Champi-onships in South Port, UK on 3 November.
“It’s a Universe show, so you had to be in-vited to compete there. It is the winners of allthe nationals held across the world. It’s thebest of the best,” she says about her greatestachievement yet on the fitness stage.
Sonja is adamant that all women who arestuck in a rut, can change to a healthier ver-sion of themselves.
“Your body wants exercise, it was made forit. I have more energy for other areas in mylife, like my family and work and I am strong-er. I can effortlessly take all my groceries
bags out of the car at one time.“I see these women who struggle
with a child on the hip, carrying somegrocery bags, having to manage theirhandbag, and then their cellphonerings,” she says with a smile.
She agrees making the lifestylechange takes some effort in the begin-ning.
“I gradually introduced my familyto eating healthy. I used to cook mymeals and then still make them theircheese sauce or whatever. Then Istarted making one pot of brown ricefor everyone, instead of white rice.Then we were all on grilled chickenbreast,” she explains.
Sonja says she knows she won’t beable to compete much longer andtherefore wants to focus on helpingothers adopt a healthy lifestyle.
“I get many requests from othermothers asking for advice. Next yearI want to host some workshops.”

Gerry can: A team of 12 dedicated and enthusiastic Elkanah House senior campuspupils jumped at the chance to get involved in the CollectaCan initiative held in conjunction with Giraffe House to build Gerry, their iconic ambassador. The task was to buildGerry using 300 or more used beverage cans and is the size of a young giraffe, justshort of two metres. The pupils, under the supervision of two teachers, set to washingcans brought in by the school’s pupils, cutting them, flattening them and then fasteningthem to a structure. Gerry required much creativity but needless to say, they wentthrough a lot of plasters as well as debating the best possible way to complete certainsections. The document was compiled by the sub-council chairperson Heather Brenner andpresented to Anton Groenewald, representa-
tive of the City of Cape Town’s executive man-agement team during last Thursday’s monthlysubcouncil meeting.“We acknowledge that what we are about to
put before you does not consist of a formal rec-ommendation but is an opportunity for thoseof us with a finger on the pulse of this area togive you a better understanding of how wehope to have some of the needs we experienceaddressed through the city’s annual budget,”Brenner said addressing Groenewald and a
handful of line department representatives.Brenner put forward six focus areas for
budgetary consideration.She gave four reasons why the city offi-
cials should consider six focus areas insteadof only three as proposed by the city.“Subcouncil 1 has sixwards and therefore
falls into the group of bigger subcouncils.Being bigger, we would have to spread ourbutter more thinly than might a subcouncilwith only three wards,” Brenner said.She cited the fact of Subcouncil 1 being ge-
ographically the biggest in the metropole,its speedily increasing population and thedistance of Atlantis and surrounding settle-ments from the CBD as further reasons forgreat budgetary consideration.“Atlantis, Witsand, Mamre and Pella are
40 kilometres away to the north and almostcompletely divorced from sharing the bene-fit of any budgetary investment in thesouthernwards – this could be equatedwithhaving two subcouncils in one,” Brennerexplained.The focus areas that need to be addressed
include job creation through skills develop-ment; provision of CCTV surveillance; pro-vision of services to backyard dwellers; pro-vision of a night shelter; crisis centre at Du-ra Youth Centre in Atlantis; andimprovement to Blaauwberg’s beachfront.Brenner said communities like those in
Joe Slovo Park, Phoenix, Du Noon, Doorn-bach, Atlantis, Mamre and Pella are in needof skills training.“Life skills, basic skills, craft skills, entre-
preneurial skills, cooking, carpentry, gar-dening – anything that can be used for sur-vival and progress,” she elaborated.She thus proposed the establishment of a

Councillor Brett Herron, said they havepledged to provide the people of Cape Townwith a decent public transport service thatwill change the fabric of the city economical-ly, environmentally and socially.“So that every resident can experience our
city as one of the most liveable cities in theworld,” Herron said.The integrated public transport system

The prizegiving was graced with thepresence of teachers, pupils, tenants andshoppers who gathered in the courtyardto congratulate the winners.
Representatives from the SunflowerFund were also present and provided in-sight about the organisation and raisedawareness about leukaemia and how tobecome a bone marrow stem cell donor.

While children all over the coun-try wished to get a bandana intheir favourite colour to wear toschool last week to raise moneyfor the Sunflower Fund, all a lit-tle girl of Oakdale wished for isnot to be sick so that she can justgo to school.
The parents of Emma Fourie (9)are still trying to absorb the devas-tatingnews that her aggressive can-cer has returned after almost fouryears of ongoing surgery, chemo-therapy and radiation.
Emma was first diagnosed withcancer in 2008 – only six months af-ter her sister, Alex (5), was born
with an abnormal heart condition.“We were still frail from the first
bad news, when I discovered oneday, whilst bathing Emma, that shehad a hard lump in her left but-tock,” Emma’s mother, Natalie,said.
“After an MRI scan and biopsy,the lump turned out to be cancerous– a sort of cancer of the soft tissue.”
Twenty weeks of chemotherapyfollowed, of which Emma spent 14weeks in hospital. That was fol-lowed with six weeks of radiationtherapy.
“By week three the top layer ofher skin looked like third degreeburns. The skin was so raw, we had
to give her strong pain medicationjust to let her go to toilet,” she said.
After radiation,more chemother-apy followed, totalling 16 months oftreatment.
Thereafter, Emma had to go for athree-monthly MRI scan, X-raysand blood tests. “Everything wasgoing well. Emma started Grade 1at Gene Louw Primary and enjoyedher dance lessons. We were plan-ning to go on a trip with somefriends,” she said.
WhenEmmawent for her normalMRI scan and check-ups in January2011, they suspected nothing. How-ever, another tumour was discov-ered and Emma had to be operatedon for the tumour to be removed.
“Due to financial reasons, as wewere still trying to recover fromlast time, we had to change medicalaids.Ournewmedical aidhas givenus a 12 month exclusion on cancerfor Emma. So, we then had to fundeverything ourselves.
“The expenses were big. In onlyfive months our hospital accountran up to almost R100 000. I’m so ter-rified that they will stop Emma’streatment as we cannot afford topay,” she said.
She had six sessions of intensechemotherapy. However, it was de-cided radiationposesmajor risks asthe tumour extended into the pelvicwall.
In October that year another tu-mour was discovered. She went forsurgery in November to try and re-move the tumour in five and a halfhours of surgery.
Emmahad thenundergone 23 ses-sions of radiation. This was once
again followed by chemotherapy.“Shewas able to go to the first day
of Grade 2 this year – she really en-joyed it. Due to her treatmentschedules, she was only able to goto schooluntil the endofFebruary.”
In the last week of February shecommenced with chemotherapy.
She suffered very bad side effects.The final chemotherapy sessionwas completed in July this year andthe radiologist confirmed that allthe scans are clear.
However, in September, Emmastarted complaining that her backwas sore.
Another tumourwas found in thebone ofEmma’s spine. “We immedi-ately had to start her on steroids totry and reduce the swelling. Shortlyafter, they discovered another tu-
mour in the bone of a vertebra, thatis busy encroaching on the nerve ofher spine, causing the pain in herback.
They also found a recurrence ofthe old tumour in the pelvic region.There are also three visible lesionsin the liver – one the size of a golfball.
“The oncologists and radiologistsdo not see any cure this timearound. They gave her 10 sessionsof radiation.
“We are exploring some alterna-tive non-invasive treatments. Alsoto keep her on a good diet and pray,pray, pray for a miracle,” she said.

Brave face as cancer reappears
Emma is bravely trying to keep up with her schoolwork.
All 64 children of the Kids Can PrePrimary School bought a bandana forBandana Day and raised R1 300 for the Sunflower Fund. One of the childrenin the school is Emma’s cousin – Emma suffers from cancer. Despite a relatively light windspeed the race was very contestablewith quality runs the entire way.Learning from last week Frick
made no mistakes off the start thistime round, and immediately led
out togetherwith the Bertish broth-ers Chris and Greg. The rest of thefield was slowly but surely gettingleft behind and eventually Greg al-so got dropped with about 3 km togo of the 10 km route.Frick kept leading out Chris but
a concerted effort from Chris sawhim virtually catch up at the en-trance to Small Bay.The 17-year-old however again
launch a renewed charge for the fin-ish which saw him finish one wave

Riding for Team Focus, Garrett waspart of the early break-away group of five rid-ers. “We attacked after about 15 km into therace, just after the Koeberg Power Station onthe R27,” Garrett said.
“Then we dropped one rider. After about50 km Carl Pasio from RSA Web joined theleading bunch. At this stage when had abouta 40 second lead on the chasing bunch,” he saidof the route that took the riders all the way
out to Mamre.At the 65 km mark the leading group lost its
lead somewhat with the other riders breathingdown their necks trailing by only 10 seconds.
“Then I attacked again and opened up a gapof about one minute which I kept all the wayto the finish,” he said of his win in 2:05:30.
“It was a head-wind all the way back so wereally suffered but luckily the teams couldn’tget organised with this head-wind so I man-aged to keep the tempo and keep them at bay,”Garrett said of this finish in 2:05:28.
The chasing bunch saw a sprint to the finishwith Reniell Matthysen (Intellibus) crossingthe line in second place 30 seconds after Gar-rett. David’s Focus team mate Kyle Donachiefrom Durbanville came in third.
