Alhadeff explains the walk will give resi-dents a chance to establish for themselveswhat is happening on this land.He further explains that the TVRA hasstruggled to make contact with the rele-vant officials at the department of publicworks.“We have managed to source direct con-tact numbers and email addresses, allow-ing us to engage directly, and we remainhopeful that they will not only engage, butplay an active role in assisting to resolvethe concerns of this community.”Alhadeff explains residents are con-

cerned about the longevity and sustaina-bility of their investment in this area.“It is very clear to this community thatgrowthwithin erf 1117 is realised on adailybasis.”He says while those occupying erf 1117have been identified as vulnerable, thereis a significant number of opportunistsnow residing there by choice.During the meeting resident StephenTwine made a heartfelt plea to residents tostart taking interest in the activities at erf1117.Twine’s elderly parents were the victims

of a home invasion in Bermuda Crescent. He explains the dunes provide a perfectlookout spot for criminals who can see di-rectly into residents’ homes. These duneson the vacant land have also been raisedas a security risk by TVNW.A few days after the invasion his father, who was in shock after the incident, suf-fered a heart attack and passed away.“I have paid informants to find informa-tionandwasgiven info that the culprits aremembers of the 26 Gang from Atlantis andare dropped off on a Sunday late afternoon. They build a temporary shelter in erf 1117,

spend three days scoping the area out forlikely low resistance targets, then break inon Thursdays and Fridays,” he says.Twine further alleges these men arepicked up late at night and they load thestolen items onto bakkies. He believes the vacant property poses asecurity risk as access is not controlled.Alhadeff says the details for the commu-nity walk will be released soon.V For more information, or if you would like to at-tend the walk, email [email protected] and [email protected].

MyCiTi commuters are urged to ensurethey get their myconnect cards renewed ifthey expire at the end of October.Commuters can get their newmyconnectcard free of charge if they replace their ex-piring cards by Saturday 31 October. Al-though the myconnect card expires, thecard balance (theMover Points andmoney)does not expire and will be transferred tothe new myconnect card immediately, pro-vided that commuters arrange for a newcard before the end of October.Approximately 19 000 active myconnectcards expire by the end of thismonth. Com-muters should look at the date on the frontof the card – shown as “valid thru 10/15”– to see if the card should be replaced.Importantly, if a commuterneglects to re-place anexpired cardby thedeadline, anewcard will have to be purchased for R20 andthe commuter will have to wait 30 days forany balance on the card to be transferredto the new card. Cards expiring at laterdates will not be replaced now.“The City is aware that it may be an in-convenience for commuters to replace theirexpired cards. It is, however, beyond ourcontrol as the myconnect card is a bankcard and all bank cards have expiry dates. We are trying to make it as easy as possiblefor commuters to get a new card, and thisis why the City is carrying the cost of thenew cards for now,’ says Citymayoral com-mitteemember for transport, Brett Herron.V You can call the transport information centre on0800 65 64 63 for more information.

tion with the police over the weekend.According to a statement, the 12-hourCity-led integrated enforcement operationin Milnerton on Friday saw 30 suspects ar-rested for various offences, including ninefor possession of drugs, seven for traffic of-fences and four for outstanding warrants.Officers also issued 262 traffic fines, re-corded 1 819 speeding offences, issued finesfor by-law and liquor contraventions totall-ing R93 850, and removed graffiti and gang

insignia from 1 135 metres of wall.“Effective policing is about more than en-forcement. There are a number of social as-pects that need addressing too and that iswhy we have started increasing operationsof this naturewherewe saturate an area andinterrogate and address all manner ofthings, like removing the territory markersof gangs. On the face of it, it might seem mi-nor, but it sends a strong message to thoseresponsible that it is not their turf, but be-longs to the community,” saysmayoral com-mittee member for safety and security, JPSmith.

Elsewhere, the City’s metro police arrest-ed 15 suspects, including seven for drivingunder the influence of alcohol and five forpossession of drugs.Cape Town traffic services arrested a totalof 77 suspects and issued 2 150 fines. film industry.Tonie van der Merwe, once

dubbed the father of the “black”film industry in South Africa, re-ceived the Lifetime Achievementaward at the Africa Movie Acade-my awards in Port Elizabeth.Van der Merwe created some

400 films in the 1970s and ’80s, in-cluding Joe Bullet, one of thecountry’s first all-black castfilms. His movies launched the ca-

reers of many African actors andnurtured a generation of Africanfilm technicians and productionhands. The majority of his filmswere distributed by means of aninformal rural distribution net-work, reaching audiences esti-mated at well over hundreds ofthousands. In 1973 the South African film Joe Bullet

was banned by the apartheid governmentafter its second screening at the Eyethucinema in Soweto. Though the banwas lat-er lifted, producersnever pursuedanotherrelease until 2013.

The film premiered at the 2014 DurbanInternational Film Festival. It also fea-tured at the To Save and Project film pres-ervation festival in New York in Novem-ber last year before being screened at theCarthage international film festival in Tu-

Shelley Point a gem on the West CoastSituated on a private peninsula surroundedby three beautiful beaches, Shelley Point isone of the only places in the country wherethe sun rises and sets over the sea.BON Hotel Shelley Point, on the Shelley

Point Estate, is one of the finest resorts onthe Cape West Coast and just a 90-minutedrive from Cape Town.Suitable for family holidays, corporate

getaways, weddings and a variety of events, the resort has plenty to offer: a challengingand officially rated 9-hole golf course, res-taurants and cocktail bars, two swimmingpools, a spa and wellness centre, tenniscourts and bowling greens and, for the fami-ly holiday, a kids’ club to keep the youngones busy while parents play golf, enjoy apamper at the spa or just laze about at thepool. The conference centre has three venues

that cater for team building, training, work-shops, cocktail functions and wedding re-ceptions – a great place to host a celebration, and the best part is that no one has to drivehome. The restaurants cater for all – from buffet

breakfasts to fabulous lunches, not to men-tion being the perfect setting for a romanticdinner (apparently to date, they have had 28

Children from across Cape Town got thechance to experience a day in the lifeof theSouthAfricanAirForcewhen the

Ysterplaat base opened its doors last week. The event has been running for 12 years

and onFridayGrade 10, 11 and 12 pupils fromvarious schools attended talks and exhibi-tions, and some were treated to a leisureflight around the peninsula.

Commanding officer Colonel AJ De Castrosays the purpose of the event was to exposeyounger children to the Air Force and hope-fully spark an interest in aviation.

“We invited different flight clubs andshowed them the latest developments. Forthis year’s event we invited children fromdisadvantaged areas and gave them an in-sight into the Air Force. We combined theaviation team and also invited the Blood-hound supersonic car team to focus on vari-ous aspects,” he says.

The Bloodhound project is a global engi-neering adventure aimed at creating a car

that will attempt to break the world landspeed record to inspire the next generationto enjoy, explore and get involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.De Castro explains this was to give chil-

dren a new perspective and a better under-standing of what the Air Force does. He gavea general overview of training programmeslike the Young Falcons Academy.Colonel Zolile Mama, who is at the helm of

recruitment for the Air Force, explained hewas present to gather information on thoseinterested in applying.Among a long list of requirements, Mama

explains science and pure maths were essen-tial subjects with geography an added bonus. He explained applicants undergo strictmedi-cal and psychological examinations to en-sure they are fit to be pilots. On the day, pupils were exposed to various

aircraft, air shows and exhibitions and evengot to see engineers working on aircraft.A group of pupils from Khayelitsha, who

have never flown before, were treated byCape Scenic Flights to a leisure flight aroundthe peninsula.

A sting in the tail that really bitesDESIRÉE RORKE

Awaking from their winter dormancy, the devilish and very invasive littleblack and yellowpaperwasps are back

tomake lifehell for residents in thenorthernsuburbs of Cape Town. But the City saysthey are ready for this onslaught.Since invading the far northern suburbs

of the city several years ago, the species –said to have made their appearance in KuilsRiver in 2010 – have plagued households.“Since the launch of the invasive wasp

control (IWC) teams in 2014, the City has re-moved 8 000 European paper wasp nests,

mostly from areas such as Durbanville,Kuils River, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Bell-ville andBothasig and are ready to assist thepublic,” says Mayco member for energy, en-vironmental and spatial planning, Johanvan der Merwe. According to him the waspseason usually occurs during warmer peri-ods, from September to May.Both alien invasive wasp species, the Eu-

ropean paper wasp (polistes dominula) andthe German wasp (vespula germanica) arelisted as a category 1b invasive species in theAlien and Invasive Species regulations inthe National Environmental ManagementBiodiversity Act.

“This means that scientists have agreedthat the wasps, by law, have to be removedas they pose a threat to the local ecosystemand several important industries such as de-ciduous fruit, wine and bee keeping indus-tries,” says Van der Merwe.Cape Town residents are advised to be

aware that the sting from thesewasps is par-ticularly painful. If nests are removed privately, property

owners areurged to senda report containingtheir street address and the number of nestsremoved to [email protected] as this helps with the City’s fu-ture planning and research.

“The City will make every effort to assistthe publicwhere possible, within our availa-ble capacity, to ensure their safety andpeaceof mind,” says Van der Merwe. He adds that the IWC teams are neither

trainednor equipped to dealwithbee remov-al. Should residents require bee removal, they should contact a professional bee keep-er.V Residents who would like assistance can uploadsightings on the spotter network at www.capetown-invasives.org.za/edrr/target-list, and thereafter theywill be contacted to arrange the removal. Check – don’t wait for renewal noticeMotorists should check the renewal

dates for their vehicles and not waitfor a notice.

According to a statement by the City ofCape Town, the National Department ofTransport’s (DOT) transfer of the ElectronicNational Traffic Information System (eNa-TIS) to the Road Traffic management centreis affecting motorists whose licence discs

have expired at the endof September andarerenewable by Wednesday 21 October.

This transfer has resulted in motorists notreceiving notices to renew their annual mo-tor vehicle licences.

Furthermore, motorists whose licencediscs will expire on Saturday 31 October andare renewable by Saturday 21 Novemberwill also not be receiving renewal notices.

You can renew your licence online by vi-siting www.capetown.gov.za, search forE-services and go to Motor Vehicle Licens-ing. You can also visit your local licensingoffice. As a rule, motorists receive a 21-daygrace period in which to renew their licencediscs from the end of their renewal period.

“We are doing everything in our power toease the discomfort of motorists and to come

up with mitigating measures.“We ask that the DOT and the Road Traffic

Management Centre resolve the transfer ofthe eNaTIS as soon as possible and that thisproblem is sorted out before November, which is traditionally the busiest month ofthe year for motor vehicle disc renewals,”says City mayoral committee member for fi-nance, Ian Neilson.

Re: “Councillor called out” (TB7 October). Hoping for answerspertaining matters in our area,I am again disappointed.Surely most attendees show upto complement our lives, businesses and assets.

I’m concerned that we aredenied opportunities to hearfrom official sources, and haveto rely on an association(TVRA) with bits and pieces ofinformation. I urge the City ofCape Town to engage, merelyto better understand affairsthat affect us. Obviously it isimpossible for the mayor toattend all meetings, and wetherefore have councillors Isuppose. Proof at the latestmeeting, and the one-sidedreport by a journalist, council-lors are rudely interrupted andshot down even before theyspeak (sadly not reported). Howcan anyone advance a businessnot having factual informationavailable? I suggest that allofficial communication pertain-ing matters for discussion, toand from TVRA and City ofCape Town officials, arepublished on the TVRA’swebsite. Surely none of theparties have anything to hide?

Reporting on the possibilityof “violence” (Blouberg Festi-val), I regrettably acknowledgethe statement exco member DesPalm made regarding aplanned “peaceful” march onerf 1117 (Happy Valley),intentionally stated he “mightjust walk over some of thoseinformal settlements himself”.Only makes me think? Council-lor, you might have a point.

Stop denying usopportunities

As this community is wellaware, the Table ViewRatepayers’ Association is ademocratically electedassociation that is governedby a constitution that ulti-mately defines our purpose, our mandate and moreimportantly our conduct.

Ours is an association thatis truly democraticallyaligned, that is non-profit anddoes singularly advance theinterest of all the residentsand ratepayers of Table Viewcollectively, and most impor-tantly not for a selective few.

ed and driven meeting wherethe City of Cape Town cameunder attack. I made contactwith cllr Nora Grose regard-ing alleged Facebook post-ings, signalling violence bythe Table View Ratepayers ata planned Blouberg Festival(something the journalistshould have done prior toreporting). If the councillorwas given a respectableopportunity, we would havebeen informed why actionhad to be taken to preventpossible violence. Gatheringfrom attendees’ tastelessetiquette at the meeting, Ihave no doubt that someTable View Ratepayers areindeed capable of uncontrolla-ble and disruptive behaviour.I certainly now understandthe saying “birds of a featherflock together”. Mr Chairmanof Table View Ratepayers, Ifully blame you for encourag-ing and allowing barbarity inyour meetings, abusing thatplatform to encouragehopelessness and gloom. There are plenty self-helppublications and internetassistance on how a chairper-son should conduct meetings.Only with cultured andappropriate leadership youmight see our future support.

SLICE OF LIFE

Please, turnoff yourcellphoneOur lives have become intrinsicallylinked with technology. Not feeling theweight of a cellphone in your pocketleaves you feeling vulnerable, naked.

While we’re more connected than everbefore, we’ve forgotten how to trulyconnect with those around us. How oftendo you sit around a table with friends, with at least one person (if not all ofthem) glued to their phones?

When did we forget our manners? When did it become socially acceptable toignore your dinner company to reply to atext message or to answer emails whilein a meeting?

And surely switching your phone offduring an event, concert, movie, weddingor church service should be a basiccourtesy. Yet we regularly find theromantic love scene in a movie or eventhe vows of a bride and groom interrupt-ed by the chirping of a phone.

What does it say about us as a societythat money has to be spent on advertis-ing to ensure cellphones are turned offbefore a movie and priests have to startsermons by asking that cellphones beswitched off?

It speaks to a lack of respect for othersthat we can’t even manage simplecellphone etiquette. It’s really simple: ifyou wouldn’t talk during the event, others shouldn’t hear your cellphone.

It’s a courtesy that we should expendwithout thinking, as simple as sayingplease or thank you.

So please turn off your cellphone.Thank you.

readers to take note that thecurrent executive committeeis and will always and canonly ever be answerable tothis same community whoseinterests we serve. As such, this management committeeis and remains committed tooperating independently, without outside interference, without prejudice and fear, and will stubbornly and withresolution only take directionfrom this same communitywe represent in absolutealignment with our approvedconstitution.

On a personal note, thiscommunity and the manage-ment committee of thisratepayers’ association is andwill always be in full agree-ment with the voiced con-cerns that those attendingthese ratepayers meetings aredenied the opportunity tohear from official sources andare solely reliant on thisratepayers’ association topresent bits and pieces ofinformation. This concernmust be recognised for whatit is, as this is a definitefailure that can only beplaced on to the shoulders ofour ward councillors. Thisratepayers’ association hasfor too long a time, beingrecognised as being rude, whereas in reality we aresimply outspoken and veryvocal in terms of this commu-nity’s needs, wants andexpectations.

As the chair of this rate-payers’ association, I haveconfidence and absolutely nodoubt in the capacity of thiscommunity to reject any callsfor violence, damaging ofproperty, bullying and thefacilitating of fumed instigat-ed and one sided meetings.

I have personally takennote of the contents of theletters penned by both“Concerned Citizen” and“Blouberg Resident” and thenegative inferences towardsviolence highlighted therein.I am saddened, disappointedand extremely concerned thatit is now common course toattack the integrity of the

members of this communitywho support such an associa-tion and the integrity ofTygerBurger, who has electedto report on what has tran-spired, ensuring that such isaccurate and beyond reproachboth ethically and legally, whilst remaining fit forpurpose of ensuring thatthose community members, who are unable to attendmeetings for various reasons, remain updated and in-formed.

Furthermore, it must benoted that the negativeviolent inferences madeagainst those members of thiscommunity who did attendsuch a meeting, coupled withthe malicious allegations aspenned against Mr Des Palm, must be recognised for whatthey are as it is clearlywithout merit, designed withspecific intent to causedivision within this commu-nity and to ultimately stiflemembership growth, whichincidently has grown byapproximately 300%, as fromthe date of our AGM, with amere 25% growth beingrecorded from the date andtime that Nora Grose calcu-latedly stormed out of ourmeeting, showing scantregard for this communityafter levelling unsubstantiat-ed allegations.

As a matter of course andin an attempt to allowmembers of this communitythe ability to reconcile suchletters to what did in facttranspire in terms of thiscontentious meet, as thecurrent chair, I have electedto allow this community theopportunity to make theirown decision, to form theirown opinions based on theactual recording of such ameeting, that has now beenmade available for thisspecific purpose.

“To be part of a 75th anniversary isalways special, but to be part of amemorial event of that period in

time is really special.”So says Barrie Jones, treasurer and chor-ister of the Cape Welsh Choir. The all-malegroup will be presenting a very special con-cert to commemorate the 75th anniversaryof the Battle of Britain on Wednesday 28 Oc-tober.The choir has been presenting an annualcommemorative concert at the Simon’sTown Naval Base Church for the last 15years and has a long standing relationshipwith the organisers, the RAF Association ofSouth Africa. With the 75th anniversary being “quite amilestone”, this year’s concert will be some-thing very special.“For us it’s a big departure,” Barrie says, explaining that they would normally go onstage and sing in theWelshmale voice choirstyle. This time round, the Cape Welsh Choirhas put a full production or showcase togeth-er in the spirit of reflecting the “era and cir-cumstances” of the period around WorldWar Two.The concert takes place against the back-drop of a specially-built set that recreates atypical bomb shelter in the London Under-groundwith the choir dressed in clothes typ-ical of the era.“It sounds dramatic maybe, but they werehard times, so there are no pink shirts forexample. It’s all very staid, working-classstuff.”They’ll be singing medleys of a selectionof well-known songs from the time. “All ofthose songswere used to embolden that spir-it of resistance.” Barrie explains that musicwas used inWorldWarTwo to unifyBritain.

Many of the songs were popularised by “theforce’s sweetheart”, Vera Lynn.SouthAfrican soloist Yvette Elliott will bebringing her songs back to life, completewith period costumes. For a bit of variation, they’ll be joined by the “rousing” Cape FieldArtillery Pipes and Drums as well as guestsfrom the UK: the RAF Salon Orchestra withtheir big band sound and theQueen’s ColourSquadron with their precision marchingdisplay. All of this will be neatly threaded togetherwith a “well-constructed” narrative put to-gether by Reverend Ralph Thornley, a keenamateur historian. “He’s got a wealth of in-formation and knowledge.”Thornley’s narrative will tell the story ofthe four months of the Battle of Britain, in-

terspersed with audio visual clips to helprecreate the atmosphere around the war.“I think it’s going to be a very special occa-sion,” says Barrie, adding: “It’s going to bea once in a lifetime opportunity.”Made up of members from all over theCape Peninsula, the Cape Welsh Choir haspresented more than 800 concerts in its 33year existence. “So, we’ve got a few mile-stones of our own.”The choir’s primary focus is on fund-rais-ing for third parties and so far they’ve beenable tohelpotherorganisations raise anesti-mated R3 million.Three members – Alan Thompson fromPinelands, Ian Jones from Table View andFreddieAhern fromBrackenfell – have beenwith the choir since the very beginning.

While the average age of the choir mem-bers is 50 plus, they are always looking fornew and younger members and use everyconcert as a recruitment opportunity.Anybody interested in joining the choircan contact chairman Graham Tennison on021 696 1716 or 073 463 1028.The concert on Wednesday 28 Octobertakes place at the Claremont Civic Centrewith two performances at 15:00 and 19:30.Tickets cost R150 or R120 for the matineefrom Computicket and proceeds will go to-wards the RAF (SA) Benevolent Fund.V For more information about the Cape Welsh Choir, visit their website at capewelshchoir.co.za or findthem on Facebook. Century City Athletic Club runnerTanya Posthumus-Fox won the Her-manus Whale Festival 21km race in

a time of 1:29:40.What makes this even more special is

that it was the first sub-90 minutes Tanyahas achieved in a 21km race.

Tanya, who came second in the samerace last year, says she felt more relaxedand calm than ever during a race.

Although it was only a week apart, Tan-ya competed in the Gun Run 21km on Sat-urday, the day after her 35th birthday.

“I kept the celebrations at bay untilafter the race!” she quipped, adding thatnormally she would not race again sosoon. She said her legs were stiff and sore, mostly because of all the hills in the Her-

manus race, but she will be visiting herphysiotherapist again this week to helprepair her body.

“However, it is now two years since Idid the Gun Run, and I really have a boneto pick with this particular race, as thelast time I did it I was forced to literallywalk the last 5km due to injury.”

She did the Gun Run in a time of 01:27:14making her the sixth out of 2 424 femalerunners to cross the line. She added thatthere are a couple of other track events(800m, 1500m and 5000m) on the horizon,as well as some shorter road races (10-15km).

“However, my next 21km road race aft-er Saturday is the HFPA half marathonin November in Bloubergstrand.”

Riding to the top!

SAREL BURGER
