Now the costs to repair the road is estima- ted to be approximately R350 000. The green light for repairs will come from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP) once permission has been given to do an Environ- ment Impact Assessment (EIA). According to local ward councillor, Marissa Jansen van Vuuren, the City of Cape Town is expec- ting that province will give the go-ahead this Friday. This news comes after a Table View resi- dent complained to authorities of an “immi- nent collapse” of the road at the end of Janu- ary. At the beginning of March part of the road collapsed and was closed off as a result. The resident, Agi Orfanos, wrote more than a month ago: “Urgent! The road retai- ning wall is collapsing. If it does the road will collapse and possibly the surrounding hou- ses. This is the road to Little Bay and John Wandell Park. Even cracks in the roadway have become blowholes and water can be se- en spraying through and sucking back.” After the collapse he vented his feelings via TygerBurger: “I informed all the council- lors of Table View and clearly wrote that a wave breaking solid wall was collapsing and that the road had cracks, being hollow un- derneath. I warned of imminent collapse! Fortunately no cars fell inside. The closure is now surely affecting the guest houses and visitors to the park.” The Sir David Guest- house is indeed being affected by the closu- re, as the general manager, Claire Dinnie elaborates: “Our back entrance is in Pelegri- ni Street. Four of our parking bays are on that side, so now we only have seven parking places for 10 rooms. The back entrance is al- so used for deliveries, so yes, we are affected. I feel sorrier, however, for the house owners along Pelegrini Street.” Dinnie never expec- ted it to collapse, but she did see the outside of the road falling away a few months ago. According to the district manager for roads and stormwater, Johan Massyn, they recei- ved the first report of the collapsed road on 1 March. “It was discovered that the materi- al supporting the concrete road slab had washed out over the years and the unsuppor- ted slab fell into the void created. It was also discovered that the adjacent slabs were suspceptible to collapse, so we are keeping the entire road closed off.” The next day the stand-by team packed sandbags along the re- taining wall to stabalise it. It was then disco- vered that the sewage pipe was also dama- ged. It was repaired by the Water Services Department. Says Massyn: “No work can be carried out until the DEA&DP approves our application.” . Pandemonium broke out in Joe SlovoPark on Thursdaywhen LawEnforce-ment removed 100 shacks from land
along Freedom Way.About 200 shacks were demolished in
terms of a final interdict granted to the Cityof Cape Town in November 2012.Thursday night the evicted shack dwel-
lers were attempting to re-erect theirshacks and some even attacked the localAs-sembly of God church to vent their feelings.An anonomous source alleged the church
has been given permission to use the nowempty land as a parking lot.This evoked the ire of the evicteddwellers
and spurredmany on to damage the churchby setting it alight.Local ward councillor Joy McCarthy
said: “The church lost its PA system, chairsand files, to name but a few.”On Friday evicted shack dwellers appa-
rently threatened to burn down the acade-mically outstanding Sinenjongo HighSchool if the principal didn’t resign.“She is the best thing that has happened
to the high school since its inception, butthese hoodlums only care about the powerstruggle, not the devastation it causes. SafeSchools have beennotified,”saidMcCarthy:McCarthy sums up the previous days

While Shaun Lambrechts was flying lowover the Atlantic he had a distinct feelingthat the word “adventure” belonged in theTrans-Atlantic Boat Adventure (TABA).
He left hisYamaha 1800 jetski behinda fewwaves ago after it nosedived somewhere bet-ween Dwarskersbos and Velddrift along theWest Coast.
After he came splashing down into thecoldwater hehad to swimback tohis vehicleto continue the race, but this is just all partof the “adventure” everyone is talkingabout.
On Sunday, 40 rubberducks and four jets-kis roared onto the beach at Melkbosstrandafter a three day journey that took them
fromStrandfontein to Lamberts Bay, ElandsBay to Langebaan, down to Yzerfontein andfinally to Melkbosstrand.
The organiser, Sakkie Schrader, reckonsthis TABA was the smoothest of all thosethat came before it.
It will also apparently be his last.He exclaims: “I’ve been involved in all 20
events, butmy body cannot take it anymore.I’m 57 years after all!”
This year there were 13 newcomers to theevent, which has garnered a reputation of“teaching one how to survive” rather thanwinning. The participants take homememo-ries that will live with them forever and theNational Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) bene-fits with money raised from the event.
According to Schrader more than R10 000was raised from the wine auction on Satur-
day night at Yzerfontein alone. He sums upthe event: “The first stretch towards Lam-berts Bay was quite a bumpy ride, but thenit was smooth again towards Velddrift. OnSaturday morning we could not go into thewater due to mist and had to drive to Lange-baan. Once in the lagoon over there the wa-ter was smooth again until we went pastVondeling Island. There the sea was veryrough indeed! Near Yzerfontein the conditi-ons improved again. After a delayed start onSundayweheaded forMelkbosstrand in gre-at conditions,wherehundreds of peoplewai-ted for us on the beach.” He applauded themall for cheering the contestants on and reser-ved a special word of thanks for the City ofCape Town’s traffic officers who kept an eyeon traffic. Trans Atlantic comes to an end
At the recent Table View CommunityPolice Forum (CPF) meeting and plena-ry meeting, new members were appoin-ted to join and grow the Exco Commit-tee. The CPF is proud to announce thatBarrie Jarrett will be taking over therole of Sector 1 Chairperson, whilst Ri-chard Hansen takes on the chairmans-hip in Sector 3. Chris Visser, formerlySector 2’s chairperson, will be movingup to take on the role of CPF vice chair-person. TheCPFalsowelcomes onboarda newmedia representative, GemmaRe-delinghuys from the Table ViewNeighbourhood Watch, where she ser-ved as their media liaison. Andrew Bra-ce remains in his role as chairman of theCPF for another year.
Ken Spies also remains on the Exco astreasurer, as do Colleen Pieterson (NGO
representative) and Col Dirk Vosloo asthe police representative. These mem-bers have made an undeniably impor-tant impact on the CPF and are lookingforward to an ongoing positive relati-onship in the coming year.
The CPF thanks the departing sector3 chairperson, Trevor Nisbet, for his in-valuable contribution to this communi-ty. Nisbet served an extended term andis well respected and indeed, loved byall.

The knock-on effect of safeguarding the N7against traffic pile-up could result in the di-version of traffic through Durbanville.Driving along the N7 in a northernly di-
rectionduringpeakhourhas becomeadan-gerous business.Drivers wishing to turn right at the Vis-
sershok turn-off pile-up beyond the slip la-ne on the N7, whichmeans there is a queueof stationary vehicles in the fast lane.To overcome this, authorities have now
come up with a plan to decommission theVissershok intersection and build a newand improved exit a few kilometers North.Commuters coming from the N1 and hea-
ding towards theMelkbosstrand turn-off orMalmesbury can’t wait for this to happen,but many members of the DurbanvilleCommunity Forum (DCF) are not so keen.Says DCF chairperson, George Sieraha:
“We feel that the realignment will have theeffect of directing traffic, including heavyduty trucks and other industrialised traf-fic, throughDurbanvillewhichwill be usedas a thoroughfare for traffic through to Stel-lenbosch, Paarl and beyond.”The Department of Transport and Public
Works are proposing that the N7 betweenthe Potsdam turn-off and the Melkbos-
strand turn-off be upgraded to freewaystandards. This will require the closure offive N7 intersections, namely Vissershok,Klein Vissershok, Frankdale, Van Schoors-drift and Morningstar, and, as mentionedabove, the relocation of the Vissershok en-trance.Affected or interested parties had ti-me till 4 March to lodge their objections orsupport. Many members of the DCF are do-ing all they can to get the Department to re-consider this proposal.
“The R300 project was meant to diverttraffic around Durbanville whereas theabove will divert traffic directly into andthrough Durbanville. As such it seems tobe an extravagant waste of taxpayers mo-ney which should rather go towards hou-sing for the poor or the R300 link,”says Sie-raha.To counter the traffic build-up along the
N7, the DCF suggests that the Vissershokturn-off should rather have an extendedslip lane on the right. The Department hasidentified several possible impacts thatcould result in the decommissioning of theVissershok interchange.These include building a bridge over
Diep River and the possible freshwater im-pacts, potential loss of agricultural landwhere a new road will be built, as well asopening up new agricultural land wherethe old road will eventually be eradicated.

susceptible during extended electricity ou-tages.The city’s acting manager of electrici-ty sales and customer relations, Neil Ballan-tyne says: “It depends on individual storageand demand ratios. During extended electri-city outages in peak water demand periods,the water supply to high lying areas can be
at risk and consumers in these areas areasked to use water sparingly.”He adds thatthe majority of the metro is supplied via lar-ge bulk water storage reservoirs, which arelargely supplied by gravity from treatmentplants, and can hence reasonably withstandthe effect of extended power outages.
“Utilities and by implication the residentsof the city, will always be affected by loadshedding, though the city has contingencyplans in place. The key pump stations havefixed back-up generators (this includes Koe-berg Pump Station) and besides generatorsfixed on site, local depots and pump stationsare also equipped with mobile generatorsthat are transported between various pumpstations as and when required,” he conclu-des.

sights... All they need to do is recite Pi to67 890 places...That special someone mightor might not be in Cape Town.
That isn’t the point, though. The point isthat no-one can come close to memorisingthe whole number, which is mainly downto it being never-ending.

Pi Day, and schools from all over the worldparticipated in this quaint celebration.
Most people will lift an eyebrow if theywere told children celebrate the beauty ofmaths. Some eyebrows will drop under theheavy burden of confused frowns.
Most people know these frowns from
school when the math teacher tried to ex-plain something. “Pi is the mysterious ma-thematical constant that represents the ra-tio of any circle’s circumference to its dia-meter. Being an irrational number, Picannot be expressed exactly as a commonfraction. Consequently its decimal repre-sentation never ends and never settles intoa permanent repeating pattern,” somemaths teacher might say.

this one into context one might think...“Also, Pi is a transcendental number – a

The 51-year-old Piet, his 50-year-old wifeLiezel and Ruhan (19) will complete theswim, run and cycle respectively. This clo-se knit family is no stranger to competitionas they enjoya fit andhealthy lifestyle. Thisis the first time, however, they will be com-peting in a triathlon.
Cape Town is due to host its first WorldTriathlon Series (WTS) in April this year– one of eight cities – when locals can eitherwatch elite athletes from 80 countries com-pete with Table Mountain as the backdropor participate themselves.
Ross Faragher Thomas,MD of Virgin Ac-tive South Africa, the official health clubpartner says, “An exciting element to theWTS is themassparticipationoptionwhereordinary athletes are being given the op-portunity to compete on the same ‘stage’and race route, on the sameday as top inter-national athletes and be part of a worldevent.”
Piet agrees this is part of the attractionof competing.
“I come from the conventional rugby,cricket and athletics backgroundbut got in-to adventure sport after a horse riding acci-dent left me unable to play rugby. I started
windsurfing and latermountain biking andparticipated in the Radio 5 Mighty MouseTriathlons in the early ’80s. Liezel and Icompleted the Cape Epic in 2005 and sincethenwe have finished twomore in 2008 and2010. The triathlon is a new challenge forthe family but it also another opportunityfor us to spend time together. Training toge-ther is a great source of fun andhas broughtus closer.”
Not only are the Van Rooyens bravelytackling the triathlon as a relay team butRuhan has had to deal with his own set ofchallenges. He was born with a right hemi-plegia which left him with approximately60%usage of his right limbs. His hardworkand paid off when he competed in the pro-vincial cycling team and won a gold medalin each of the four events he entered!
This achievement earned him the title ofJunior Sports Person of the Year for peoplewith disabilities. Speed fest to excite at KillarneyStreetFest (vol2) returns to Killarney
Raceway on Friday with an actionpacked programme.
The organisers are planning an excitingday and this event will therefore start slight-ly earlier than normal with MSA Drags run-ning from 08:00 till about 15:00 followed byStreet2Strip till 18:00. The Street2Strip en-tries will, however, be limited to 150 entriesonly to give all drivers a fair chance to getsome runs in on the day.
There will also be some spinners perform-ing for the crowds as well as streetcar trackday sessions on the half main circuit duringthe course of the day.
Top competitors expected to impress willinclude Ralph Kumbier in his twin turbopowered V8 ChevFirenza, this highly im-pressive machine has managed an 8,6 secondrun at Killarney over the quarter mile. Heis expected to be challenged by Willie Nel inhis Chev Can-Am, Willie often doing sub 10second runs now days. Other top contendersmay include Eugene Wicomb (Mikes PlaceToyota Supra), Keith vd Poel ( “Bumble Bee”Chev Manta) and Michael Kayser (Nissanbakkie). Bad Brad from Pro-Fit exhaustsmanaged to run 10,9 seconds at the most re-cent Killarney event, lets see if Brad can im-prove on this time.

The Milnerton Aquatic Club hosted its 17thannual MAC 24 Hour Endurance Dinghy SailingChallenge.
Last weekend Milnerton Aquatic Clubhosted its 17th annualMAC 24Hour En-durance Dinghy Sailing Challenge.
Sailors formed teams of 6 to 10 per boatand hoped to sail for a full 24 hours, startingat 12:00 Saturday and ending at 12:00 Sundaylunchtime. Unfortunately due to strongwinds and safety reasons they were forcedto temporarily postpone the racing duringthe evening.This is a high action spectator sport with
teams changing crew every 2 to 3 hours withmany close to shore entertaining momentswith the many crew changes.Top sailors joined from far and wide
throughout SouthAfricawith 26 boats parti-cipating this year. The following class ding-hy’s participated: Bosun, Enterprise, Mir-ror, GP14, Saldanha, Sonnet, 420 and the Pi-co.The huge Saldanha Dinghy’s sailed by va-
rious Scout Groups from the Western Capehad their hands full once thewind picked upon Saturday after lunch, with some of themcapsizing and being unable to right them inthe strong wind. Rescue towed them to the
shallows where they could be emptied ofwater and righted.Nurse Yolanda Kock had her hands full
early eveningwith five injuries within thespace of an hour and a more serious onewith a Saldanha Boom hitting someone’shead. This resulted in the ambulance arri-ving but thankfully this was not too seri-ous and the chap was back at MAC laterthat evening, notwilling tomiss out onanyof the fun.Early evening, the race officer,KevinRi-
chardson decided for safety reason to post-pone the racing until the wind calmeddown. Thankfully Sundaywas lovely calmwind conditions and they started at 05:00.The sailors enjoyed a beautiful day of sai-ling on Sundaywith the event endingwiththe prize giving.The winners of the MAC 24 Hour Chal-
lenge was won on handicap by Team ‘WhoAreYou’which comprised ofDaniel Sprat-ley (MAC), Daniel London (FBYC), JasonGray (MAC), Warwick Strutt (TWSC), Mi-chael & Robynne Hoyle (IYC), Luke Sher(IYC) and Daniel Raubenheimer (ZVYC).
