Click “Create Hard Drive”, Select disks to be used. If you want to use RAID then click “Create RAID Device”

otherwise click “Create Hard Drive”. In this tutorial I will create a RAID5 array.

2. If you want to use RAID:

Note: You need to select RAID type if you want to use RAID

For data safety, use RAID1 (at least 2 disks)

For data transfer speed, use RAID0 (if one disk fails all data will be gone)

For a balanced safety and speed, use RAID5 (fast, and relatively safe, usually needs 3 or more disks)

For better safety and RAID 5 features, use RAID6 (one disk for hot spare, will be used if a disk fails. needs 4

or more disks)

If you are thinking about RIAD 10 you are an expert and you don’t need read the rest

If you still don’t know how to choose the RAID type, then follow this: if you have 2 disks, user RAID1; 3

disks, use RAID5; 4 disks, use RAID6. Play with it and you can come back to make a decision.

Click “Create RAID Array”, select your RAID type (RAID for this tutorial), select drives to be used in this

RAID array and the block size (64KB for this tutorial) and click “Create”:

A RAID5 array will be created and displayed in the list. Because the RAID is just created it conducts the

synchronization. Depending on your CPU speed and the size of your Hard Drives, this step may take a

very long time.

At this moment you have completed the basic configuration. You can start using U-NAS now.

Explanation:

In order to use U-NAS, you will need to create the user account (you may skip this step if you

use admin only) followed by data storage. U-NAS uses LVM to manage the disks/RAIDs.

Therefore you will need to setup Volume Groups followed by Volume and then create Shared

Folders. After the shared folders are created, you can start using U-NAS.

Setup Storage: Initialize Hard Drives → Create RAID → Create Volume Groups → Create Volume

→ Create Shared Folder

Setup User Account: Create User Groups → Create Users

U-NAS adopts LVM+RIAD/JBOD plus independent disks architecture. Therefore we need to

create LVM first (volume group & volume) and then shared folders. The advantage of this is U-

NAS supports multiple volume groups and multiple volumes which provide much better

flexibility for managing complex data. Please note different types of hard drives and RAIDs can

be used in a single volume groups. Users will only see a transparent storage space (a large and

expandable storage space).

After storage is configured, U-NAS folder looks like: volume group/volume/folder

U-NAS supports multiple Volume Groups, Volumes and shared folders.

U-NAS volume group can include multiple RAID and hard drives. U-NAS volume group can

include different type of RAIDs and disks to form a transparent storage space.

Note: in addition to LVM, U-NAS also supports automatic mounting disks (NTFS, EXT3/EXT4, XFS) for

sharing.
