Sydney U3A Calendar & Course List - July - December 20094

PLEASE NOTE!U3A members can join courses in any region, and you will be warmly welcomed at any course you take

However, some courses have a limit on numbers. This is usually governed by venue size, teaching requirements or equipment limits (e.g. computers).

Throughout this publication, a double asterisk (**) indicates those courses which have limits on numbers, and the actual number of students who can be accommodated is indicated in brackets.

Acceptance into any course is strictly on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis. Consequently, you are urged to act promptly. Once courses fi ll, waiting lists are kept which are reviewed at intervals.

Keep in mind that there are several hundred courses running at any one time in Sydney U3A. If you miss out on one of your preferred choices there are bound to be others which you might fi nd just as fulfi lling.

Best wishes for another satisfying semester of learning and discovery.

John YatesVice President - Education

From the PresidentDear Members,

We are living in uncertain times, and none of us needs reminding about the continuously increasing cost of all aspects of our everyday lives. Our organisation of course is not immune from this, and our Management Committee is continuously concerned with deal-ing with these rising costs. Many of our expenses such as insurance and copyright, are fi xed and are not negotiable, while with others such as rent and venue hire, we are dealing with other bodies who are subject to the same cost increases as we are, and who need to maintain their income.

The Management Committee is constantly examining all aspects of our expenditure and reducing costs where possible without compromising the high quality of our activities, and consistent with maintaining the image of the organisation as a robust and substantial body.

Nevertheless it is inevitable that over the years ahead there will need to be increases in membership fees to allow us to meet our rising costs. As we have no capacity to go into debt, we have to be able to meet our running costs out of our income – the only source of which is members’ subscriptions. We shall do our best to introduce these increases at an acceptable rate.

Like most organisations in this age of technology, all of our printed material is available in full on our web site. Members comfortable with accessing the Course Book and the Bulletin on line, would help us make signifi cant savings in postage costs. In this way you would receive information in the quickest way possible, while also helping to reduce our environmental impact. Below you will fi nd a small notice inviting you to respond if you would be prepared to forgo hard copies and use online access. There is no pressure on members to do this and it is important that people using this facility are absolutely happy with it. We shall continue in the foreseeable future to provide hard copies to those of our members who want them.

On the brighter side, we still feel that U3A is very good value, and the best value of all this year is the 21st Anniversary Celebration day on 11 July at Sydney University. For $25 you will hear four excellent speakers, have a delicious lunch and an opportunity to meet friends and gossip. Please send your acceptances in soon as we have to make arrangements for lunches.

Best wishes for a successful and stimulating semester.

SincerelyLesley Duffi ll Thanks To Our

VolunteersU3A depends for its very existence on its willing band of volunteer helpers – indeed these are amongst our most precious assets. Some of our volunteers have a very visible profi le, serving in some capacity on Regional or Central committees. However, there are many volunteers who work behind the scenes in a variety of capacities, making tea, collecting money, arranging the rooms for the meetings, and a range of other activities.

The contributions of all our volunteers is recognised and truly appreciated by the membership at large, and this is a note to say thank you to all the people who help in any capacity to enable our organisation to meet its objectives of delivering a stimulating educational program in a warm social environment.

Thank you to everybody

John Yates(VP Ed)

COURSE LISTS AND BULLETINS BY e-MAILOur Course Lists and Bulletins are now placed on the internet as soon as they are published. As many of our members operate e-mail addresses and are com-fortable using the internet, your Management Committee has considered the possibility of distributing these documents by email instead of hard copy to those members. This would create worthwhile savings both in printing and postage costs. In addition it would be an environmentally attractive thing to do.

This is entirely voluntary and there is no pressure to change over. Those mem-bers wishing to receive hard copies will continue to do so.

We would like to create a mailing list of those members who would be willing to receive electronic publications, and to this end, if you are willing could you please notify Central Offi ce at:

[email protected]

with an email in the format

“I am willing to receive a) the Course List, and b) the Bulletin by electronic mail in future. NAME………….. MEMBERSHIP NUMBER………….

If you are willing to receive one and not the other, this is fi ne, and please indicate your choices clearly.
