Eastbound

Sunday morning in the summer is one of my favorites. The sun is out, the

grass is green, the birds are enjoying my bird feeder and I am enjoying them flying around and fighting the squirrels for food. It is also my time to write about the events that shape our dental society and make us unique.

One of those events is the Give Kids A Smile program which we host at the Aquarium in Riverhead. At this event we, the dental society dentists, volunteer and partner with dental students from The Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, Residents from St. Charles Hospital, Farmingdale Dental Hygiene students, and BOCES Dental Assistant students, to provide exams, cleanings and instruction to over 300 children that would otherwise not have access to these services. Children that need a dental home are then provided with a list of dentists that are in the area who can provide them with care. This list includes the names of the dentists who volunteered for the event. By taking time out of their offices these dentists are rewarded with the satisfaction of giving back to the community and enjoying time with their peers, a perk of volunteering!

My mission this year has been to include all the members of the dental society into a big family. That is why we are heading East to include our East End members. The dental society’s Education Committee has partnered with the Membership Committee to bring one of our lecture series to our members out East. On October 13, 2017, Dr. Gene Antenucci, past president of the Suffolk County Dental Society, will be presenting a lecture on new technology at the Hilton Garden Inn in Riverhead. It is a combined effort by these committees to include our East End members by making an event more accessible and we are hoping that our colleagues will be able to join us! So, colleagues out East, get ready, we’re coming to your backyard and we would like you to join us! See you on October 13, 2017!

American Dental Association Trustee Elect

It is with humble pride that I share with you my recent election as Trustee representing our Second Trustee District, New York, on the Board of the ADA. This is a position that requires a great deal of time and energy and I suppose I should be more careful with the saying, “Be careful what you wish for, you might get it!”

All kidding aside, I am very fortunate to be at a place in my personal and professional career that this position fits exceedingly well, and blessed by a support group here in Suffolk County that I believe rivals any component in the US. I have always aspired to be active, engaged, and productive in any service position I have filled during my career in our organization and culminating in this opportunity takes a great deal of timing, dedication, and optimism. I am indeed blessed to have been elected and graciously intend to continue my direction to find the best path for our profession. This position will commence with the close of the ADA House Meeting in October of 2018, so I have plenty of time to prepare myself for the rigors of the position over the next 15 months. There are currently 17 Trustee districts across our country. The larger states like New York, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Florida are their own districts and the others are made up of multiple states that also include the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Armed Services, to name a few. Representation on this board is an honor that members of each district elect for four year terms to handle many of the issues that affect our profession, and how the ADA answers those issues. Our House of Delegates is the primary policy setting body of the

organization and the Board of Trustees, by meeting more frequently than the annual meeting, carries the responsibility to bring the needs of our volunteer membership to the expression of those policies set by our House. In this current political climate there is a great deal of mistrust, acrimony, and distaste for the entire realm. Fortunately the world of dental politics runs in a lateral universe where respect and congeniality support our mission. There are, however many personalities and many constituents that all want their voice heard and acted upon. I can assure you that I have a great amount of respect for those who have preceded me in this position. I also feel that representing New York State nationally is something that gives me great pride because of the strength of those members I now represent across our state. On a personal note, I would like to thank all those members of the Suffolk County Dental Society that provided support to me over the past 28 years of my career. Dr. Kevin Henner as my campaign Chair, our Executive Director Dr. Paul Markowitz for his constant support and as a fountain of advice, all of our Delegates / Alternates and members of our Board who have helped shape my career and each of you for your membership in our organization that has the ability and desire to shape the world's greatest profession.

Please keep your eyes open for our blast emails. We try to limit the number that we send, but we want to keep you informed about

From the desk of

Paul Markowitz, DMD

I am very excited to share the following news regarding the recent NYSDA House Of Delegates

meeting. I have been involved in one capacity or another with organized dentistry for just under 30 years, since I joined the SCDS Board in 1988. This meeting was the pinnacle of that involvement for many reasons. First of all, let me thank our Trustee Dr. Paul Leary; Delegates Drs. Kevin Henner, Guenter Jonke, Kerry Lane, Maria Maranga, Chris Salierno, Jeffrey Seiver, Steven Snyder and Ivan Vazquez; and Alternate Delegates Drs. Martin Dominger, Scott Firestone, John Guariglia, Patricia Hanlon, Dimitrios Kilimitzoglou, Claudia Mahon-Vazquez, Anthony Maresca and Sharon Pollick for their unlimited energy and desire to help with the important work that needs to be done on behalf of the members of the SCDS. This group worked together tirelessly and were intimately involved in all aspects of the meeting. Their commitment was outstanding. There have been numerous meetings that I have attended at both the ADA and NYSDA where I have left very disappointed because the outcome of many votes were not what I thought they should be. In addition, I felt that many issues which needed to be resolved were either defeated or referred back for more discussion (which many times were never to be seen again). However, this meeting ended on such a positive note, because all the outcomes were what we, as a group, wanted. First, Dr. Firestone, as the Chair of the Council on Dental Practice had proposed a resolution, regarding the use of local anesthesia by dental hygienists, that his Council had recommended. Dr Firestone spoke on behalf of that resolution, which passed. Second, there was a resolution to continue the Medicaid subcommittee, which is chaired by Dr. Hanlon, for another two year term. Dr. Mahon-Vazquez spoke to the HOD regarding the value of this sub-committee and this resolution passed as well. Third, Dr. Seiver and the Peer Review Council have been working for numerous years to rewrite the Manual which

sets policy for this important member benefit. Dr. Seiver has been a strong believer that the old policy manual was unfair and has been actively working to update its flaws. I am happy to report that the new 60 page manual that he was intimately involved in rewriting has been approved. Fourth, the resolution that the SCDS presented last year to the NYSDA HOD regarding the reduction of the active life dues discount, to match the ADA and the SCDS, was reintroduced this year with the support of the NYSDA Council on Membership and the Board of Trustees. There was much discussion regarding this resolution and Dr. Seiver spoke on behalf of its merits. This resolution passed also. Finally, the high point of the entire meeting was the election of the next ADA Trustee to represent the 2nd Trustee District (New York State). Dr. Leary ran against past NYSDA President Dr. Deborah Weisfuse from NY County. Dr. Leary gave a very well received speech to the entire HOD and also visited individually with each of the thirteen components, accompanied by his wife, Debbie and Dr. Henner. I am extremely happy and proud to announce that Dr. Leary will be serving as our next ADA Trustee starting in the fall 2018. I could not be more excited for the future of the SCDS, NYSDA and the ADA. The members of the SCDS are extremely well represented by many talented and intelligent individuals who are able to work together to support and encourage each other to continually rise to a higher level. We are all extremely fortunate to have this right here in our own back yard. Thank you everyone for your dedication and desire to keep our profession moving forward in a positive direction for the young dentists who will be our future leaders.

2017 has been a busy year so far for our Membership Committee. Most

recently we held our first “Paint and Sip Night” at Espana Restaurant and Tapas Bar. This fun event was among several others organized by the Society to bring camaraderie as well as education and services to our members.

May found the members of committee braving the elements while shredding our members documents, FREE OF CHARGE. We want to thank our sponsor MLMIC and their representative, Kathy Lagano, for helping us to provide this much-needed member benefit!!

The Membership Committee worked with our Education Committee, chaired by Dr. Jimmy Kilimitzoglou, to prepare a CE course for our East End Members. Please look for details in our bulletin and always CHECK YOUR E-MAIL and the WEBSITE for information about all upcoming events.

Currently Membership is working with the New Dentist Committee to host a fun and informative event in October for our Residents and New Dentists. “Name that Member Benefit” will be an evening of fun while obtaining information about what the Society does for its members. Dr. Brian McCormack, Chairperson of the New Dentist Committee, is working with his team, Dr. Jen Englebright, Dr. Nicole Napolitano, and Dr. Justin Ohnigian, to organize a great evening.

If you have any ideas for events or programs that might be interesting or helpful to our members, please let us know.

Dues Installment Memo

Please watch for the notice this Fall from NYSDAS regarding the dues installment payment option for 2018. NYSDA implemented this policy a few years ago and it has been very well received by many of our members. The plan allows you to pay your tripartite dues over a seven month period from November to May. It is only available to members in good standing who are assessed the full active dues for 2018. If you are eligible you will see an icon on the members only section of the NYSDA website, www.nysdental.org. Enrollment is only available online and participation is available by credit card only. Don't miss out on this opportunity. It will only be available in the Fall. Once the program is under way, you will not be able to take advantage of it.

The following members will be receiving NYSDA certificates recognizing continuing education hours completed from the date of membership through the end of 2016. Awards are given only at the benchmark levels of 100, 300,

500, 1000 and every 500 credit hours thereafter. For example, members who completed 450 total hours in 2016 will not receive an award until they complete 500 hours. The 100 and 300 hour certificates have been mailed out

and the remaining certificates will be presented at our September 27th General Membership Meeting.

What Would You Do?

Dr. Mascalese has been practicing Prosthodontics and TMD for the last 20 years

in the same location in a small suburban 75 miles from the big city. The only other specialist is 80 miles away.

He has been treating Ms. Frappato for the past 2 years for TMD. She is a petite 38 year old with hypertension which is controlled by a low dose beta blocker, occasional migraine headaches treated with Imitrex and a hypothyroid condition treated with the medication Synthroid. She smokes 1/2 pack of cigarettes per day . She has tried many times to quit but has not been successful. Her dental condition includes multiple missing teeth and associated malocclusion. In addition, a myofascial condition involving the temporalis and masseters flares up occasionally. Dr. Mascalese has helped her greatly with NSAIDS, a few narcotics when extremely painful, physical therapy and an orthotic appliance. He has started her posterior rehabilitation and has several teeth in temporaries. She has never missed an appointment, but last week she cancelled her appointment and this morning , your receptionist tells you that she is cancelling a 2 hour appointment scheduled for later today. Dr. Mascalese has been dating Ms. Frappato for 6 months or so, but he recently broke off their relationship. He had never dated a patient before. Dr. Mascalese's wife passed away 3 years ago from breast cancer. Ms. Frappato explained to the receptionist that "I can't bear to see him anymore." She knows that she can't wait too long for final treatment because of her temporary crowns. Ms. Frappato asked the receptionist for another dentist to continue her treatment.

Dr. Mascalese is visibly upset when he learns the reasons since her case requires a complex treatment . He knows that her job is quite stressful not to mention the commute from the city is almost 1 1/2 hours to his office each way. In addition, he has arranged an interest free financing monthly payment plan that most offices would never consider. Dr. Mascalese is facing an ethical dilemma. Check the course of action that you would recommend and return to the SCDS at [email protected]. 1.__ Dr. Mascalese should attempt to re-establish a professional relationship with the patient. 2.__ Dr. Mascalese should cease treating the patient and take proper steps to avoid patient abandonment. 3.__ Dr. Mascalese should avoid dating patients in the future. 4.__ Dr. Mascalese should help finding another dentist to complete her care in the city. 5.__ Other alternatives. (please elaborate) ______________________________________ 6.__ Don't care. Planning my next family vacation. {Dr. Jonke is the Past Chair of the NYSDA Council on Ethics and will be serving on the ADA Council on Ethics, Bylaws and Judicial Affairs starting this Fall.}

Update Your Find-a-Dentist Profile

The ADA has launched a new advertising campaign to bring more patients to your practice.

In this 3-year campaign, they will be spending $6 million annually on search and digital advertising to direct

consumers to make an appointment with an ADA dentist.

As part of this campaign, they have enhanced the Find-a-Dentist tool to make it easier for patients to find you.
