The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is the leading trade association for the UK motor industry. SMMT has undertaken numerous projects and events in the Indian market over the last 12 years to help UK companies develop strong links and business contacts with key Indian automotive companies.

SMMT is pleased to be exhibiting again at the SIAT Expo with a selected group of UK automotive companies.

The companies exhibiting reflect the high quality, innovation and technological excellence that typify the UK automotive sector. A diverse range of products is on offer, from components to engineering expertise in various fields such as driveline systems and mechanical engineering.

All of these companies have a strong interest in developing links and partnerships with Indian companies attending the SIAT 2015 Expo and associated events.

The UK automotive industry is in the world’s top 10 countries by turnover and is one of the most dynamic in Europe. Over £3 billion ($5 billion) of investment has been committed by major automotive manufacturers to automotive production in the UK over the past two years.

The UK remains the home of luxury vehicle assembly, with Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar Land Rover and Rolls Royce all producing exciting new and technologically advanced models. The UK is also a significant manufacturing location for global volume players such as Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan and Toyota. Add to that the array of specialist, commercial and niche manufacturers - as well as seven of the world’s Formula One teams - it is easy to see why the UK has an international reputation for automotive excellence.

Part of the UK’s competitiveness is also its strength in design and development, with OEMs and bespoke research and development companies flourishing in the UK.

Perhaps most exciting, however, are the tremendous advances in low carbon technologies being developed in the UK. Some of these can be seen on the SMMT stand at SIAT Expo and reflect the focus of many of the UK’s 2,500+ component manufacturers.

Crucially, the importance of this sector to the UK is being recognised by UK government. In 2009, the Automotive Council was established, bringing government and the automotive sector together to deliver sustainable growth. The Council launched the Automotive Industrial Strategy last year – a 10-year commitment to skill development, technological innovation and support for the UK supply chain. The benefits of this high-level support can be seen in the focus on skill development, technological innovation and support for the UK supply chain.

This has the additional benefit of further improving the international competitiveness of UK companies keen to develop business links abroad.

Asia already represents around a third of all the UK’s automotive exports but it is hoped that events such as SIAT will enable the sector to build even closer business links with this fast-growing region.

The UK automotive sector is “open for business”. We have an international outlook and a competitive investment environment, as well as tremendous opportunities and talent which attract global partners.
