Presidents welcome

It is my great privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the UK Radiation Oncology Congress 2013.

UKRO is the major national Radiation Oncology conference, pulling together healthcare professionals of many disciplines to share experiences and knowledge and to meet others in our specialist fi eld.

We are all having to adapt to living in a changing world; one in which we are going to have to ‘do more with less’. It would be all too easy to assume that an inevitable outcome of this is that activities which relate to development of tomorrows answers will be casualties of the resource squeeze. I do not believe that this needs to be the case. This conference is therefore structured around the fundamental premise that, resource constraints notwithstanding, as professionals we can continue to develop our processes and practices. By doing so we will stay at the forefront of our profession, be able to deliver a good service and ensure we have careers/occupations which are interesting, effective and rewarding.

The strap line of this conference is “The Four I’s of Radiotherapy”: Implementation, Integration, Innovation and Inspiration – a play on words on the fundamental principles supporting radiotherapy. With these themes running through the meeting we are expecting an exciting conference that will encompass the recent service developments across the UK, the drive for multi-disciplinary working, the exciting prospects that research topics continue to offer and to celebrate the ‘can-do’ attitude of our professions.

The theme of integration continues by offering an education and update programme for radiotherapy nurses and another for dosimetrists, radiotherapy technicians and engineers, providing an education and integration forum for contemporary radiotherapy.

I am delighted that we will be hearing from many radiotherapy leaders who will be sharing their visions of the future. For example: one topical issue is whether or not we should image regularly during a procedure. There is going to be a ‘no-holds barred’ debate, arguing the case for and against this. Understanding this issue is going to be pivotal for the effective delivery of our service.

We have timed this conference to ensure the best attendance of the industry’s key suppliers. This will offer you an unparalleled opportunity to see the equipment and technologies available today and have a foretaste of what will be coming tomorrow. There is little doubt that we live in a changing world, where yesterday’s unthinkable is only a heartbeat away from tomorrow’s inevitable. This conference offers an unmissable opportunity to listen to an inspirational group of thinkers who can show us the different ways of working that will ensure that we meet the objectives I outlined above. I very much hope you will be able to attend an event that is going to be instrumental in helping us all understand the future shape of our profession and the service we can offer our patients.

I look forward to meeting you in Nottingham in October.
