    01WHAT HAPPENSFIRST THEN?

Says fish armer andall-round top angler, BenGratwicke: Once thehookbait is in the mouth, ithe fish hasnt already beenspooked, the palatal organon the upper side and flooro the mouth will trap theood item or sorting. This

is when the alarm bells willring, as there isnt only ayummy boilie in its mouth, but also a nasty sharppiece o metal. The palatalorgan is highly sensitive, covered in taste buds andcan enable a carp to sortbloodworm out o silt soany oreign objects arequickly sensed.

    02DOES ANY OFTHAT CHANGE

IF ITS A BOTTOMBAIT OR A POP-UP?Ben continues, The onlything that would change isthe positioning or perhapsthe angle. With a pop-upyou can have the hookprone ready or attackwhereas a bottom bait is

more likely to get suckedin with other bits o debris,so it is vital it has goodhooking ability.

    03IS THIS THEREASON SOME

RIGS WORK BETTERTHAN OTHERS THEN?Most definitely. Havingthe right hooking pattern/rig type or the job is so, soimportant, thats why youwill see many o the verysuccessul anglers havingtheir rigs absolutely razorsharp, aligned, tied andbalanced to get the best

result. So its a case o:right rig, right job.

    04WHAT

ABOUT HOOKHOLDS THEN?Once your rig is outand fishing, the numberdiferent parameters ora hooked fish are endless:size o fish, number ofish eeding at anyone

time (competition orood), direction a fishapproaches your rig, themake-up o the lakebedyoure fishing on, be it silt, gravel or somewhere inbetween and also whatrig and the confidence inwhich a fish is eeding. Ashy, careul common may

just get nicked in the lip, whereas a at old greedymirror may wol down yourhookbait and be hookedan inch inside. All thesethings can play a massiverole in where the fish gets

hooked. Just have a thinkabout what you havefishing on the lakebed andthe surroundings you arefishing on.

    05HOW MUCHWATER CAN

    A 30LBER MOVEWHEN SUCKING INYOUR HOOKBAIT?A 30lber can move a

hell o a volume o water, especially i its sitingthrough silt and loosedebris ater those littlebloodworm, says Ben, butput it in a situation where amore delicate approach isneeded, such as plucking afloater rom the surace filmand the water movementcan be altered to suit. As

or the exact volume, I haveno idea, but in one suckperhaps up to hal-a-litre

    06HAVE YOUGOT ANY

    INTERESTINGEXAMPLES OF AFISH GETTING

AWAY WITH IT?I once watched a fish pick-up my hookbait and ratherthan bolt of, it stoppedstill with the hookbait in itsmouth, levelled itsel whichin-turn picked up my 2ozlead of the lakebed. It thenviolently shook its head,

spun round and shot ofleaving my rig in the processand escaping capture. Theonly indication I got was theline liting about two-inches.So why didnt I strike? Well,I was curious to see whatwould happen and the fishin question wasnt very big, although ater fishing thelake or the rest o the year

I learnt that this particularfish hadnt been bankedor three years and I neversaw it in the water or on thebank again!

07DO YOU KNOWIF IT HAS BEEN

CAUGHT SINCE?Well, last year, the lake inquestion very unortunatelyhad a major fish kill and lo

and behold, this fish turnedup dead and none o thenew members recognisedit. From what I could makeout, since I let the syndicatein 1995, it had never beencaptured, so I make that 18years uncaught!

Ater my occurrence,I shortened my hooklink tothree- to our-inches andupped the lead size andwas super careul that myhooks were needle sharp. The result was a run o fishrom the lake, including apersonal best.

THE FOLLOWING SHOWSYOU THE PROCESSES ACARP GOES THROUGH

AFTER GETTING HOOKED.THIS IS ALL NATURAL TOTHE FISH AND THE ONLYTHING ON THEIR MIND ISSHEDDING THAT PIECE OFMETAL IN THEIR MOUTH.

    01

I the fish is clever, it will shakeits head or careully manoeuvre

and shed the hook, spinning, rollingand rapid mouth movement are othersuch ways; i its not so clever, then itsear time!

02From this point on, adrenalinewill be released. Oncesecreted into the bloodstream,it rapidly prepares the body oraction in emergency situations. The hormone boosts the supply o

oxygen and glucose to the brainand muscles while suppressing othernon-emergency bodily processes(digestion in particular). I the fish hasa gut ull o ood some o this will beexcreted during the fight.

03At this point with this addedbodily exertion, the oxygendemand will go up and the fish willrespire much harder. Just think i youhad run around as ast as you couldor five minutes and then shovedunder water how do you reckon youwould act? Always think as i you werethe fish!

04Once landed, i held in asack, the fish will oten lightenin colour as added blood is in themuscles and skin. Had a fish that willnot sit still on the bank beore? Thisis all down to its natural instinct to

escape, so take your time and tryto calm the fish by covering its eyesand keep it nice and wet to minimisedamage to the skin.

    HOOKHOLD2

As beore but with the hook urtherback inside the mouth, but not

necessarily in the centre, possibly withsome evidence o the hook tearing beorefinding a more secure hold nearer the lips.

EVALUATIONThis is trickier to evaluate. It could represent a confident eedingfish and/or it could be that the fish has cautiously sucked in/eaten

the bait, beore slowly moving onto the next ood item. This

type o hook hold is common when fishing with a spread o bait, normally boilies, with a carpet o small particles. This is oten agood secure hook hold, but to improve it urther, try lengthening

the Hair slightly and/or shortening the hooklink an inch or two.

    HOOKHOLD1

Fish hooked in thebottom lip, not tooclose to the edge,

up to oneinchinside in the mouth, dead in the centre.

EVALUATIONThis is just aboutas perect as youcan get it! Thishook hold will beas secure as youcan get in the carps

tough bottom lip, thereore causingas little damageas possible.

Fish hookedin this mannerindicate a confidentpick-up, with therig mechanicsworking well. Thisis also an indication

that your baitingsituation is probablyspot on as well.DONT CHANGEANYTHING!

    FLICK THEPAGE FORMOREHOOK HOLD

    ANALYSIS

EVALUATIONA di cult one, as nothing

    maybe wrong and

everything is working well. When using very sharp

hooks, its sometimesthe case that you start

to experience some verybizarre, yet secure hook

    holds. I you pick-up ahighly, well-sharpened

hook and imagine itbobbing around in a carps

    mouth, you immediately

realise that there is a hugepossibility o it catching

    hold anywhere withinthe mouth.

I you are using anti-eject rigs, then hook holds

can indeed be irrational.Let me qualiy the abovesentence: I am not nave

enough to believe thatthere is a rig out there

that 100% cannot beejected, but carp, withouta shadow o a doubt, findsome rigs harder to eject

than others, so that makesthem anti-eject doesnt it?!

This type o hook hold isan anomaly in that it can

and does happen, eventhough we set our rigs up

    so that it shouldnt!

    HOOKHOLD4

Inside the mouth, but not inthe bottom lip or scissors.

    HOOK

HOLD3EVALUATIONThis is where it gets trickybut also very interesting. There is a distinct possibilitythat you may have beenunlucky with this hook hold. The stark reality is verysimple: the hook just didntgo ar enough into the carpsmouth! The fish may havemoved as soon as it sucked

the bait in or tried to eject therig or shook its head and thehook just nicked home.

My first call o actionwould be to lengthen thehooklink by around two-inches. I I was using a longishHair this would be shortenedslightly by hal-inch incrementsand I would also look atthe possibility o critically-

balancing the rig or the hook.A change to a slightly smallerhook may also be consideredbut personally I am o theopinion that a bigger hookis harder to eject than asmaller one, so adjusting thebuoyancy o the bait/hook/rig would be considered first. The addition o a simple line-aligner would also help.

Hooked on theedge o the lips, not securelyhooked.

    HOOK

    HOLD5

EVALUATIONHooking carp in thescissors is a very com-mon occurrence, butunortunately can alsobe one o the mostdamaging places to hookthe carp, which i we arein a position to change, then we should. We haveall seen the pictures oparrot-mouthed carp and

this is generally occurringwhen anglers use very finesot braids as hooklengthsin conjunction with smallhooks, oten with smallparticle baits and/or thewaters are very weedyand the fish are otenbullied in or get weededup requently duringthe fight.

    Carp caught in this

manner are oten eedingon smaller type baits orrom very tightly baitedareas. The fish are hoo-vering up large amountso ood and moving tothe next mouthul whilstchewing and the hooklinkis tightening againstthe lead and the hookis catching a hold in thecorner o the mouth.

This is very simpleto remedy, as a smallshortening o the hooklink(I start in two-inch incre-ments and then work romthere) and the inclusiono a small curved pieceo shrink tube or a line-aligner at the hook endusually gets the hook go-ing back into the bottomo the mouth. Nailed!

Hooked in the scissors orvery close to the cornero the mouth.

    HOOK

    HOLD6

EVALUATIONAnother anomaly this one. It can very oten happen when floaterfishing, particularly at close-range. The act we hook most othe fish we catch in the bottom o the mouth proves that the rigmechanics are working, in conjunction with the lead set-up. Yearsago, beore we dare put any lead on the line or ear o the carpeeling the resistance and blowing the bait out, the majority o thefish landed were hooked in the top lip, as we had to pull our hooksthrough the bait on the strike. Its a strange one this.

Hooked in the upperpart o the mouth

    HOOKHOLD7

EVALUATIONSadly, we are alwaysgoing to lose fish on

    occasions. This notknowing whether we

will land our prizeor not is one o the

    ascinating aspectso our sport. Whilst

angling experience isone o the most im-portant tools we can

use to our advantage, its something you

cannot buy or learnwithout some heart-

ache, but thinkingabout your rigs and

learning to adapt andproblem solve in any

    given situation willwithout doubt put

you on the right pathto thinking or your-sel and becoming a

better angler. Onething Ive said beore, but is definitely worth

repeating is, Thebest rig in the world

is a bait the carpREALLY want.

The Albright Knot is a simple and easyknot to tie once you have got the hango it. It is used when attaching a supplebraid to a stif fluorocarbon in a CombiRig or when attaching a mono orfluorocarbon leader to your main line.

    ALBRIGHT

    KNOT

    001Firstly, double overyour fluorocarbon

hooklink so that you have aneat loop.

    003Wrap the supplebraid around the

    two pieces o fluorocarbonsix times.

    004Now wrap thesupple braid back

    down towards the loopour times.

    005Thread your braidback through the

loop the opposite way romwhen you started.

006Moisten the knotand gently pull all

o the ends to tighten theknot down.

    002Thread yoursupple braid

through the middle o thefluorocarbon loop.

007Trim of anyexcess so that you

are let with a neat and verystrong knot.

    008Here is yourfinished knot

ready-to-go! Its awesomeand it wont let you down!

001Form an openloop (A) in your

chosen leader materiallike we have done here.

    002Now take yourmain line and

pass it through the openloop (A).

    003Pass the mainline over the

leader material 10 timesas shown here.

    004Next, makesix turns o

    the main line back over

    the previous 10 turns

    and back through open

    loop A.

    005Using fingerand thumb,

gently push turns omain line to knot A to

    orm knot. Always wet

    beore bedding down.

M A H I NL E A D E R K N O TThe Mahin Leader Knot is, as its namesuggests, perfect as a shockleader knot.Although its a very small knot (which isbrilliant as it flies through the rod ringsvery cleanly), its incredibly strong andcomes recommended by a great number ofthe countrys finest longdistance casters. Its also one of the easiest leader knots totie an Overhand Knot, ten turns, followedby six over the top of those and then backthrough the original loop. Simple!

001Firstly, take your two pieces oline and run them side-by-side

    to each other.002

Create a loop using onepiece o line running next to

    the other piece.003

Go around the other line andthrough the loop five times,

    Grinner Knot style.

004Moisten the knot and pull itdown against the line, dont

Now, flip the knot around,so you have the knot to your

BACK-TO-BACK G RINNER KNOTThis is similar to the BackToBack Blood Knot but uses a Grinner instead. This is another good knot forattaching leaders to your main line and is fairly easy to tie, along with been very reliable, so it will cope withlong, heavy casts.

HOW T O T I E T HE P E RFE C TS P O O L K N O T E V E R Y T I M ESome guys are flummoxed by a Spool Knot, oten opting ora knot that doesnt really ofer the same values as the knotpurposelydesigned or the job in hand. It really is very easy. Pass the end o the line around the spool on your reel.

Pass the line over the line again and wrap it over itselour times. 3 Now pass the line back through the loopyou originally made. 4 Wet the knot and pull tight beoretrimming the end. Start reeling to load yourspool.

002Wrap the tag five timesup the line.

003Put the tag back throughthe loop next to the swivel.

004Moisten, pull down andtrim of the tag end.

B L O O D K N O TThe Blood Knot is a brilliantknot and can be used in a lot ofsituations. This is a very basicknot and is used for attachingyour main line to loops onleaders and swivels. It is veryeasy to tie and is often thefirst knot an angler is taught.

The Knotless Knot to leadcore is anotherawesome method o attaching your main line to aleadcore material. This knot is very small and neat, making it more streamline and aerodynamic. It isairly easy to tie and once done a couple o timesyou wont go back.

    KNOTLESS

    KNOT

    LEADCORE

    001Firstly, push thesheath back to

expose around our-inches o inner core.

    002Take a sharppair o rig

scissors and cut of theour-inches o lead.

    003Slide the innersheath back

where the lead used tobe, so it is supple.

    004Take a splicingneedle and

push it into the sheathwhere the lead ends.

    005When theneedle is out

the end o the sheath, take a hold o your line.

    007Wrap thesheath around

011And there you have the finished KnotlessKnot Leadcore Knot (a mouthul!). Its

incredibly strong, and is both very user and fish-riendly. Use leadcore - use this knot!

    006Pass the endo the leadcore

A Needle Knot is another knot you can use to attach your main line to a leadcore material. This is a very sae and easy knot to tie; the diameter is small so it still allows beads andswivels to pass over it easily, ensuring it is a sae setup.

    001Firstly, push thesheath back to

    004Take a thinsplicing needle

TERRY HEARNS SNELL KNOTI.E. THE BEST KNOT TO USE WHEN TYING YOUR CHODDIES OR HINGED STIFF LINKS

SO: ITS CALLED THE SNELL KNOT ANDIS RATED BY THE LIKES OF HEARNAND ELLYATT AS THE BEST KNOT FORATTACHING THE HOOK, SIMPLY BECAUSEIT GRIPS THE SHANK SO TIGHTLY ANDDOESNT TWIST. PLUS, THE TAG END TOFORM THE D AND THE SECTION THATEXITS THE EYE ARE BOTH IN LINE SO ITDOESNT KICK THE HOOK OFF AT ANANGLE AS CAN WITH A KNOTLESS KNOT.IT ALSO MAKES IT EASIER TO RETAIN ORSET THE CURVE.

TO TIE THE TERRY HEARN STYLE CHODRIG YOU NEED THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:20LB ESP STIFF BRISTLE FILAMENT, SIZE 5ESP STIFF RIGGERS, FLEXI-RING SWIVELS(SIZE 11), RIG RINGS, LIGHTER, BAITINGNEEDLE, SCISSORS AND BAIT FLOSS. ANDNOW HERES HOW TO TIE IT

    002

    Now make a big loop,

large enough to gettwo fingers through. 003

    Like so.

004Put the loop undertension and then by

twiddling your fingers, begin towhip the bottom section o theBristle Filament loop aroundthe hooks shank, at the sametime trapping both the top twopieces o Bristle.

005Whip over the Bristleand shank as shown

at the same time as keepingeverything tight.

006Its all in the twiddlingo the fingers, this

is where a lot o people haveproblems, but once masteredits really easy. Ive tried to keepthe turns loose so you can seethem more easily, but you wantto keep them tight.

007I usually go or seventurns on a size 5 Stif

Rigger and eight turns on a size 4.

    001Firstof,

take yourStif Riggerand 20lbStif BristleFilamentand pass theline throughthe eye othe hook as

    you normallywould.

  • 7/29/2019 Ultimate Rig Guide by Vin Vin (Increible - Carpa)

    27/132

    025

010Obviously as youtighten, the loop will

become smaller. To avoid theloop rom twisting round onitsel, its best to keep your fingerin the loop right until the verylast moment as shown here.

011Next bit is prettyimportant as well. Rather

than risking damage by pullingthe knot down to the eye withthe Bristle Filament, I tease theknot down to the eye with myfingernails.

012Once the turns havebeen slid down to the

hooks eye, its time to tightenully. This is easiest with abaiting needle.

013Pass a rig ring ontothe tag end beore you

pass it back through the eye othe hook.

014Blob and thencool with the end

    o the lighter.

015I think the end resultis a much neater knot

without the last wrap crossingall the turns as it does with aKnotless Knot. As a plus, itsalso a tighter, more secureeeling knot. Once the pop-upis tied on, its easier to twist/set the loop at the correctposition and there it stays nomatter how ar youre casting.

The downside: its definitelymore tricky to teach somebodyhow to tie compared with theKnotless Knot.

008Keeping the looptight with my big

finger, I then trap the knot turnsbetween finger and thumb andthen begin to tighten the knotby pulling the opposite end withthe Bristle spool still attached. This is done downwards asshown in the next picture,as I think this helps reducedamage to the Bristle Filament.

Obviously the knot is firstwetted beore any tightening.

009As you can see, Imtightening with my let

hand and rather than pulling theknot tight in line with the hooksshank which creates a sort o Sbend where the Bristle Filamenttravels through the hooks eye,Im instead tightening with agentle downwards pull and thisseems to create a kinder, lessdamaging angle on the Bristle

    Filament.

002To start, either using yournails or a stripper tool,

003Next you need to tie asimple Overhand Loop Knot

in the exposed braided bit this isyour Hair loop.

004Beore you attach the hook, thread on your hookbait and

how tight you want it) o silicone andpass it onto the hooklink material.

006Taking a long-shank typehook, careully pass the point

through the silicone, making sure notto pierce it

007With the hook point throughthe silicone, thread the tubing

    033

Its something that I first started adding to myrigs six years ago. On one particularly hard, lowstock Oxord lake, I tried it and started catchingtench that in itsel was an eyeopener becauseany tench captures were very rare. A short whilelater I captured a carp that had gone uncaught orseven years and at just under 39lbs it was a veryspecial capture indeed. That was in and Ihave used it to good efect ever since.

The thinking behind it is simple enough: Iwanted to use a airly long hooklink and I wasconcerned that carp may not hook themselves

properly. Basically I wanted to cause themproblems independently o the lead coming intoplay. The idea was that with the hook and baittaken into the mouth, the lump o putty would

provide small but constant downward pressureon the hook point, helping it to find a hold andalso helping it maintain a hold once the point had

pricked the skin. I recall watching a carp nail itselwhen I was testing the rig in the margins o The

Blue Pool I used a long curved length o shrinktube on the eye o the hook, a piece o siliconeto trap the Hair well around the bend and a longcombi rig where I had pinched a big shot just abovethe joining mini rig ring. The fish picked up the baitand started shaking its head but the lead didntmove that told me the rig caused them problemswell beore the lead was supposed to do its job.

I started to increase the shot size and thenchanged to putty because it was more streamlinedand neater. As a rule o thumb, mould the puttyaround a Sinker or rig ring about an inchandahal below the hook eye or the end o the shrinktube i you are using it. You can use a air sizelump too; maybe x mm. Give it a go, it wontcatch you any less carp, o that I am certain!

002You are also going to needsome maggots or the rig.

Big PVA bags o the grubs are greatwhen casting out.

003To start, cut of a long sectiono supple braid; this will give

the rig lots more movement and willmake the rig more efective.

004Now attach the braid to yourhook using a Grinner Knot.

This can be ound in the Knot Sectiono this rig guide.

005Take a single imitation maggot(any colour) and pass the at

end o the maggot onto the hook asshown in the picture.

006Put the hook through almostall o the maggot, but exit

at the last ridge and start to slide itaround the bend o the hook.

007Slide the maggot all o theway around the hook and

    001Take ten-incheso a supple braid.

Here we are using KordaSupernatural, as its verysupple and versatile.

    002Now attach thehooklink material

to the hook eye with asimple Grinner Knot (findthis in the Knot Section.)

004Take the end oyour material and

hook it onto the needle andthread the corn down tothe hook.

005Now position thecorn over the eye

o the hook; you want theeye to sit in the middle othe plastic bait.

    006Take a LargeKorda Sinker and

thread it down the hooklinkmaterial. This will pin it tothe lakebed.

007At the end o thehooklink material,

you will now need to tie asimple Figure-O-Eight-Loop Knot.

    008

    Take your in-line

lead and tapout the hard insert romthe centre; this can bediscarded.

    010

    Thread your line

through the lead,Shockleader Sleeve and tieto a swivel and then attacha Stik Clip.

    011

    Next, create a small

PVA Stick and passa baiting needle through it.You want to exit to the sideo the top as shown.

    003Pass a baitingneedle through the

corn. Pierce the thin endfirst and only go throughthe top hal as shown.

HOW TODRESS A HOOK LIKE JOE MORGAN

    012Attach the loopon your hooklink

to your baiting needle andthen slide the Stick downthe hooklink.

013This is the reasonyou come out the

side o the Stick, becausethe bait is attached to thehook, not a Hair.

    014Now you need tothread a piece o

silicon down your hooklinkand attach the loop to theStik Clip.

    015Having a ringand a Stik Clip

will give the rig lots moremovement and this gives abetter hooking potential.

    016

    Push the silicon

over the top o theStik clip. This will stop thehooklink rom coming ofduring a cast.

    017

    So there you have

001Take some marabou eathers and holdthem along the shank o the hook.

002Whip your hooklink around the shank andeathers Knotless Knot style.

TIGER NUTS: UNPLUGGEDONE TIGER NUT. TWO PRESENTATIONS. LOADS MORE CARP. SOUND GOOD?JUST ASK AVID CARPS MAT WOODS

Tiger nuts are one o thosebaits that I was always prettysuspicious o. I read about howanglers tore places apart onthem, but or me they nevermade a lot o sense. They weretoo boring, too bland to beconsidered, but as Id done wellin the past on peanuts, my concerns were a little hypocritical!

But I subscribe to the cherryon the cake principle, so singlehookbaits, to me, means brightand smelly. Now whilst a nicetiger nut thats been ermentingin sugary juices or a ew dayscertainly smells the part, itsnever really looked the part orme. It needs to be more visual.Brighter in some way.

For a while I tried skinning

the tigers and that workedquite well, but it still wasntthe same as a yellow popup.Even when fishing over hempand tigers, a tiger nut wasnt asefective as a bright hookbaitand I always thought this wasbecause it was too cumbersome and too dull.

A ew years ago, I obtainedone o those boiliecoring

devices that were designed toremove plugs o bait so youcould insert cork and oam.Because a tiger is so firm, youcan use these to go all theway through the nut withoutcompromising its structure. When finished, you get a tigerwith a hole in it and a littlepellet plug o juicy tiger inner. And both have great potentialas a hookbait choice!

Over bait, I use the tigerplugs in conjunction with anAvid Carp SIGHT STOP,

which just happens to be theexact same diameter as mycoring device! It looks the nuts(excuse the pun) and hascaught me loads o fish inthe last three or our years, especially over spod mix.

O course, I cant neglectthe nut thats let behind, andoam soon makes its way into

the void. I dont, however, attach it in the usual style, because I want a visualaspect rom all angles. Iattach the tiger lengthways, leaving the bright yellowoam exposed on two sides othe tiger. Pop a yellow SightStop on and youve got threelittle sight bobs on a tiger nuthookbait. Perect!

The finished hookbaits sinkreally slowly and you sometimes need a tiny shot on theHair to get the right buoyancy, but the really slow sinkers areawesome as a single hookbaiton a longer hooklink. My chosen rig or bothhookbaits is mega simple. Ihave quite a long Hair, a littleblowback ring and a beaked

point hook to prevent thepoints turning over too easily.Because both hookbaits arequite light, a straight pointedhook can give you real headaches, especially as othernuisance fish come in overparticle baited areas and movethe water around a lot. So give the two presentations a whirl. Both will stay onthe Hair or days on end andprovide something a little bitdiferent that's certainly helpedme tag a ew more whackers.

    The originalBlow-Out(BlowbackRig) Rig

eatured a ring tied to theHair located on the bend, reveals the inventor, KevinNash. This was so onpricking, when the carpblew against the bait, thering/Hair would slide downthe shank leaving the baitbehind the eye o the hook, preventing the carp romachieving the necessaryangle to dislodge the point. This rig was devastating, and trust me, that is anunderstatement!

Nonetheless, ater atime I became paranoid

that carp were stilloccasionally doing me.I was on a particularlyhigh-pressured water andoccasionally I would getone or two short, sharpbeats or the rod tip wouldtremble. So I changedthe ring or a small pieceo silicone rubber thatwas purposely o a bore

that would grip the Hairsu ciently, but whenpulling against, the Haircould slide down the shank. To my mind this is thesignificant point about thistube version o the Blow-Out Rig it is a telltale. So i a carp that is riggedup manages to eject thisrig you always know, asi you check your rig youwill find the position othe silicone has changedrom its correct position atthe top o the bend to theblown out position wherethe silicone has slid downthe shank and is jammedagainst the knot/eye othe hook.

I would observe thatater a blank session themajority o carp anglersfigure there were no carpabout, as they didnt geta bite. Certainly I haveheard it said hundreds otimes when an angler getsa couple o bleeps on hisindicator they just say, linebite. It doesnt occur to

them that they may havehad a carp rigged up thathas sat there sucking andblowing without giving anyor little indication and whenridding itsel o the hook ithas calmly swum of!

I the water I amfishing doesnt have largenumbers o nuisance fish orcrayfish, I treat the smallestindication with suspicionand am not comortableuntil I have checked the rig.Ater a couple o bleepsI will give it an amount otime until I have to windthat rig in and check. Also, whenever I wind my rodsin, even though I have noindication, I always look at

the positioning o the tubeto see i it hasslipped backand I havebeen done.

    005

    Push the silicone

down to the bendand leave a 10mm gapbetween the bait and hook.Secure Knotless Knot style.

    006

    Next cut of

15mms o 0.5mmDifusion Shrink Tubingand then cut one end at a45-degree angle as shown.

    008

    I always test the

finished rig in thepalm o my hand. I itscorrect, it should turn andgrab hold straightaway.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS/EDGES WHEN IT COMES TOHANDLING AND TYING THE STIFFBRISTLE FILAMENT?I cut of about a 12-inch length o BristleFilament and then holding one end betweenmy teeth, run my fingers down it quitevigorously to remove any twist, warm it up abit and make it more manageable. You couldalso steam it to make it completely straightbut I have never ound this necessary.

HOW MANY TURNS AROUND THEHOOK SHANK HAVE YOU FOUNDBEST AND DOES THIS DIFFERDEPENDING ON THE HOOK SIZE?It depends on the size o D that you want, but remember the more turns around thehook, the heavier it becomes, which couldafect the buoyancy o the pop-up. For aclassic smallish D that looks right in relation

to the size o the hook and the thickness othe Bristle Filament, I use eight turns on a size4 Stif Rigger (20lb Bristle Filament), sevenon a size 5 (20lb) and six on a size 6 (15lb).

AND FINALLY, HOW DO YOU BLOBTHE TAG END? DO YOU MELT ITAND THEN TAP IT AGAINST THELIGHTER TO FORM A FLAT EDGEOR DO YOU LEAVE IT SO YOUVEACTUALLY GOT A BULB?I preer to blob the tag end leaving the bulbuntouched. Using a bait needle to shape theD, I pull the bulb back into the eye whereit tends to find an intererence fit due to theslightly tapered shape o the bulb. I havealso used the lighter to flatten the blob whilstit is still sot to create a nail head. This looksnice and neat and locates flat up against theeye. Its all down to personal preerence reallyand what you think looks right. You couldargue that the bulb protrudes slightly romthe eye, marginally reducing the gape o thehook but I dont think either method makes adiference to the perormance o the rig.

THE IN VISIB LE BREAKAWAY CHOD RIGTHEY CANT SEE IT, YOUR HOOKBAIT IS PRESENTED PERFECTLY

AND IT MAKES FISHING IN WEED CHILDS PLAY. AWESOME!

GETTING THE CAST RIGHTBECAUSE THIS MAKES AMASSIVE DIFFERENCEYou want to make a light, controlledcast, which is eathered and ploppedin generally. Sink the lead on a tight lineand once it hits bottom, apply minimalamounts o pressure to pull the line

under the surace as you want the ChodRig to settle generally over the weed, not be pulled it into it.

First of, you dont want to fish this withthe Chod Rig running on the main line its meant to be semifixed. On paper, itsthe simplest and most straightorwardrig to construct. No leadcore, no tubing,no leader knots, no nothing or weed toclog and snag around.

The lead can be ditched the momentyou get a take and that o course meansthe fish hasnt got anything to help losethe hook against. You get % perectpresentation regardless o how muchweed is out there and best o all, itsalmost totally invisible.

Lets start with the basics. You wantthe Chod Rig fixed up the line, as thiswill ensure it doesnt snag on the weed. The way you cast and sink the line is alsovery important too, as is the way youbalance your popup. The final part othe jigsaw is how you set your indicator:it must be on the deck so the line can befished totally slack. Right, heres now toconstruct it

MAIN LINEWhen fishing into weed you need ahardcore main line something likeGardners GR60 or their HydroTUFFin 15 or 18lb breaking strains. Its veryimportant not to put any lumps oputty up the line to help sink it.

    TWO SEMI-FIXED STOPS

To hold the Chod Rig in place, youmust use the Small Korda Sinkers. To ease with passing them up themain line, simply wet the line first. To sit on top o the Sinkers, useKordas 4mm Rubber Beads.

THE DISTANCETo ensure the rig is fishing inany depth o weed, positionthese stops right up the line

anything up to eight or nine oot.

STRONG RINGFor this rig to work efectivelyyou need to lose the lead onthe take. Take a pair o wirecutters and remove the ringrom a flexi-swivel and tie thisto the end o your main line.

ROTTEN BOTTOMThis is the weak link that connectsthe lead to the main line. 3lb monois the recommended breakingstrain. You want to make this linkabout six-inches as itll snap quiteeasily on the take then. I yourecasting longish distances, simplyPVA tape this link to the ring.

LIGHT(ISH) LEADUse the lightest lead you can getaway with. The less dense the lead theless it will penetrate into the weed.

    05 4 ULTIMATE RIG GUIDE

001Above are all o thecomponents that you will

need to tie the quick and easy WithyPool Rig.

    002Start of by cutting a 10-inchlength o Coretex and

removing three-inches o the outer-coating as weve done here.

003Attach your hook to thebraided section with a simple

Three-Turn Blood Knot. Wet andthen bed the knot down.

004Next, careully thread one othe new Fox Withy/Curve

Shank Adaptor onto the Coretexhooklink like so.

005Gently work the sleevedown the hooklink and into

position over the eye o your chosenhook pattern.

006The next step is to thread aMicro Hook Ring Swivel on

to the shank o the hook, with the ringon the shank.

007Now careully thread a RigStop onto the bend o the

hook as illustrated in this image.008

You will then take a six-incheslength o Bait Floss, yellow is

012Trim away the excess BaitFloss so you only have two

small tags sticking out o the end -youll use these to really secure it.

013Take a lighter and careullyburn the remaining tag ends

and then blob it against the hookbait. Its now secure.

014The hookbait is now securedon the swivel this is a very

004Transer PVA Tapeis then used to tie
